    What about pop girls that, while have not reached consistent mainstream success, have reached critical acclaim from critics and cult status from fans? Artists that come to mind are Robyn, Carly Rae Jensen, Tinashe, Charli XCX.

    I feel it is also worth noting that what defines a main pop girl is very americanised and basically excludes very popular female pop artists that aren't big enough in the US, but tick all the boxes such as Ellie Goulding, Jess Glynne, Anne-Marie, Zara Larsson, Kylie Minogue, Annie Lennox and maybe even Ava Max.

    The “main pop girl” has changed over the years, and always will & it’s interesting to see. You also definitely need to have a a strong fanbase like you said to be considered that. Like ari and katy perry for example, their major fanbase is what helped them get to that level.

    You should do a video about Sweden and how they impacted the modern music scene. Without many Swedish songwriters pop music would not be super unrecognisable. Many hits such as Hit Me One More Time, pretty much any well-known boyband song and Lush Life have been penned by Swedes. Sweden is definitely a very under appreciated country in music as they have contributed so much to modern music.

    I actually feel quite bad for Sabrina Carpenter because she was very close to mainstream success before Drivers License came out. That isn’t to say that it was Olivia’s fault, because it wasn’t, but the public reaction to the song basically left Sabrina’s career in shambles. And then swarms of her fan base left her behind for Olivia and even Dove Cameron. She was so close to becoming a main pop girly but now it’s
    probably going to take years for her to become one.

    • @Wendigirl11
      @Wendigirl11 2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      + to expand on why Sabrina stans became Dove Cameron stans, I think it was because they both occupied the same sphere. Both were on Disney at the same time and quite frankly looked a lot alike (mind you this was when Dove still had her iconic blonde hair). Dove had never gotten into a *major* scandal before so she was favored after the Drivers License fiasco.

    The main pop girl bar today is in hell, don’t get me wrong, Billie, Olivia, Cardi, Doja, Dua, and whoever else they aight, but they don’t have the charismatic qualities or factors that sets them apart from one another, except for probably Doja, but think about Britney she was the face of what a Pop Star is supposed to be from the image, to looks, and to the appeal, and the natural star power, but of course we can’t forget the O.G blueprints Donna, Diana, Cher, Olivia, Madonna, Mariah, Whitney, Janet, who inspired pretty much every pop girl in the latter decades, but I feel as if our last batch of true main pop girls were Beyoncé, Christina, Rihanna, Gaga, Katy, Nicki, Taylor, Kesha, and Ariana they were our last batch of pop girlie superstars, and I feel like they’re at the point in their careers where they’re not that hungry for hits anymore, but the girls listed above they’re not there yet…, they’re being released during the fast food era of music where it’s about quantity, and not about quality… so sometimes the artistic transcendentalism in them isn’t fully intact

    • @dontgetinthecarjames
      @dontgetinthecarjames 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I was thinking this too!! Although I'm loving this new era of artists having a really wide range of music they put out, I do miss the classic pop girlys. And defo agree with what you said about not being hungry for hits, most of the pop icons that came from the 2000's and 2010's are crazy successful and living comfortably which I think has given them the freedom to experiment with different styles of music, most notably Taylor's switch from pop to indie/folk. Also the people Jas talked about in the sad indie girl genre like lorde, I don't think I'd consider that genre pop, personally. And we're 100% in the fast food era of music. I feel like there's a new artist coming out everyday with a new hit and we almost don't get time to fully process an artist as a whole instead of one song. Hate to be that person but I blame tiktok.

      I agree that it is easier to look back at artists and see how they have stood the test of time, whereas newer artists haven't been able to show as much longevity just yet. However, I feel some have definitely been able to set themselves apart, with Lizzo incorporating her classical degree in music and excellent flute skills plus her emphasis on body positivity, or Billie who is extremely recognizable for her baggy styles and "darker" musical themes. Just my thoughts though!

  • @princessgarbage
    @princessgarbage 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    I agree, to me it seems like it’s kind of hard to use the label for newer artists in a meaningful way now because there is so much saturation in pop music market, so many sub-variations, and so many people of Pop Icon status who are still thriving in their careers (a la Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, etc.) who are such ASTRONOMICAL stars that will go down in history as legends and not just trends. Tiktok has done a lot in terms of boosting newer artists careers, but the thing Tiktok excels at is popularizing microtrends, and I feel like that’s something it does with music on there too. Like, Olivia is cool and all and doing a lot but I could never see her doing a superbowl akin to Gaga or Beyonce, y’know what I mean?

    i think most people use main pop girl the same way supermodel is used now. it’s more about brand recognition and perceived untouchability than any hard statistical basis. obviously it’s a subjective distinction based on how successful you perceive each person to be in certain categories, and nobody’s losing out on deals because there’s a tweet with 12 likes that says you don’t make the cut. like a camila stan could say that she has the numbers both in sales and people talking about her and painstakingly detail every assertion her and her team have made in terms of her brand, but someone else can turn around and justify them not being adequate to the parameters of a main pop girl still. i think it can still be interesting and worthwhile to discuss these things and gauge how successful a career is perceived across a consuming audience, but ultimately there’s no definitive basis for it as a label

  • @diamondocean68

    Depending on how you define "cultural impact," I would argue that yes, Camila should be considered a main pop girl. For example, Havana and Señorita were largely responsible for bringing Latin music into mainstream pop during the late 2010s. Also, "crying in the club" and "leaving Fifth Harmony" are well-known memes that people continue to use even today. That being said, I do agree that her "brand" isn't as developed or recognizable as some of the others discussed in the video.

    I would say currently the main pop girls are Arianna, doja, and Olivia. Olivia is the newest but for some reason to me she feels the most main pop girl. Maybe it’s her acting roots, and the great pr from her album release that created a narrative to make fans feel invested in her career idk. Obviously Arianna is a main pop girl, but she has slowed down a lot (rightfully so media scrutiny can only be tolerated for so long) so it feels like a completed narrative.
    Ps I really like this video. You can tell that you put in tons of research and care. I noticed the audio balance was a bit off with the sound effects. They were a bit louder than your voice. It’s such a small gripe, and I don’t want to take away from the amazing finished product. I just thought I might mention it in case it could be helpful for future videos. Personally, I would call a "main pop girl" a MAINSTREAM ENTERTAINER. Anyone who has a recognizable PUBLIC PERSONA and stands out as a PERFORMER, globally. It's also usually someone who reinvents themselves periodically. The type of music you make is secondary. Being a vocalist is secondary. That's what makes someone a "POP STAR": THE PACKAGE, combining hit music, commercial success, with impactful performance (stage presence, dance, choreography, visuals, fashion, audiovisual media, marketing, a recognizable brand, concerts with high production value, etc).

    • @lobaetoile8440

      I wouldn't call people like Céline Dion, Mariah Carey or Adele a pop star, I would call them "a power house". I also wouldn't call people like Lana del Rey, Lorde or Phoebe Bridgers "pop stars".
      Who could be called that (apart from the obvious ones like Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Madonna, Tina Turner, Beyoncé or LadyGaga):
      Maybe Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Doja Cat, maybe even groups like Little Mix.

    I think the huge problem with main pop girl or boy is that radio is that much a big part of our lives like it was in the 90s or 00s.
    Music has become too individualized and personal.
    It’s also too easy to choose what you want to listen to or watch. With MTV and radio you had to wait for your favorites to appear and that made us discover more music and artists to like and listen to so became more popular since you and your sisters had to make compromises to what to listen and watch lol 😂
    Right now everyone listens to their Spotify playlists in the car people rarely listen to the radio and it has made things harder for music stars to happen.

    i feel we are witnessing the growth of dua lipa as a main pop girl. she's been having hits left and right for several years know, but i feel it wasn't until last year that she began consolidating her brand as a 'persona'. She was known for making hits, but she did not have a huge fanbase or conversation around her as a person, not only as an artist, if that makes sense.

    • @joanabals
      @joanabals ปีที่แล้ว

      it is also interesting seeing how now it is more difficult to achieve the category of main pop girl because famous singers are backing away from social media, drama, and their life is less exposed now, and that's a 'crucial' part of being a main pop girl: people being interested and aware of your personal life. this is why i feel main pop girls have kind of stayed the same for this last decade, because we used to know more ab their lifes and therefore we feel more attached and familiar to them, their cultural legacy is stronger, whereas now this just doesnt happen that much (see how the fact that olivia rodrigo had a recognisable drama rushed her to stardom, we were really craving something like this)

    Disagree with the last point..feels very dismissive of music that's not popular as being not good....there are a lot of factors that go into making a main pop girl and music is often secondary in that list. I feel like this needs to be said, popularity is not a defining factor in music being good. To dismiss all music that's not mainstream as being inferior is just ignorant and untrue. The modern music business world is ruthless and honestly , in my experience, i have had to force myself to like pop music to fit in a lot of times, even tho lots of times I just naturally didn't always like it, and I'm tired of that.

    I think Dua Lipa is the most relevant singer to be in the main pop girls category in the current era because of the level of success she has achieved with just 2 albums and the impact and influence she has on the industry, I mean she redefined pop when the hopes that pop will survive were so low. She started the disco era and that was it, 2020 was a disco era... everyone followed her lead. I've never seen such a phenomenon where a single artist defines the music of a whole year and years succeeding it, an artist whose era is the era of her time and just how much power she holds and the talent and recognition she has.

    While we do have main pop girls now,they will not be as impactful in terms of resetting pop music as the ones decades before them but they just started less than a decade ago so we will have to see their longevity.Also it is good that we have a variety of pop music instead of a very homogeneous sound.

    Here’s the only valid criteria for a main pop girl:
    (And the keyword here is “MAIN” if you wanna be the main girl, it’s gonna take a lot of criteria & high asf standards cuz we cannot just slap this label on any girl who sings.)
    1) insane vocals. And I mean INSANE. Singing just good is not enough, we want power vocals.
    2) overflowing charisma both on and off stage (+ kindness towards others too imo)
    3) talent stacked upon talent. If you can sing, you better back that up with some dance skills, rap skills, song writing skills, producing skills, etc. You can’t be known for just one thing, you have to excel at multiple things. I mean, you can have your _main_ thing but you have to have other skill sets too.
    4) relevancy throughout the years AND years of experience. Some new girl on the scene shouldn’t immediately be labeled as a main pop girl, she needs to prove herself.
    5) Good music that can chart high. I know this one is a bit subjective but I think having more than just a couple songs chart high can prove if your music is good or not (not all the time tho but typically main pop girls can get those numbers).
    And like I said, the standards are HIGH. It’s a tough label to get and it should be. We are talking about THEE it girls of pop music here. If a girl doesn’t fit all the criteria, sorry but she’s not a main pop girl and I refuse to settle on her.

    • @hotsexyangel
      @hotsexyangel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      With all this being said, Olivia is NOT a main pop girl. Y’all are way too generous to that chick when her career is running on borrowed time. Doja could be a MPG but she has the wrong attitude + she’s immature af. Dua could also be a MPG but she doesn’t have the vocals. Let’s face it yall, we’re in a serious MPG drought right now.

    • @fentyprint
      @fentyprint 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      you forgot one important thing: their influence! what have they done for the music and the culture? what have they done to spread their influence on the next generation of artists?
      that being said, i don’t think vocal talent is that much of a pre-requisite compared to factors like sales or recognizable image. look at rihanna and madonna, easily the biggest main pop girls of their respective eras sales wise and chart wise

    • @MsDiMera2
      @MsDiMera2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      "Insane vocals" are not necessary to be a main pop girl some of the biggest pop stars we have had in the last 20 years havent had huge pipes . Britney , Taylor Janet Jackson , are not known for having insane vocals .
