"Andre" from Victorious also went on to be successful in the music industry, he's worked on Grammy winning/nominated songs, Nickelodeon really did fumble the bag with so many people.
Yup! & I just learned he sang a song with Ty (Roshon Fegan) from Disney's "Shake it Up" in 2011. He produced & co-wrote about 10 songs in total from Ariana's 1st album (Yours Truly )& most recent album (Positions). It's so nice to know they're both immensely succesful & remained friends for over a decade :)
It's ironic that nick overlooked Keke Palmer, Leon Thomas and Ariana Grande and they ended up being more successful than their chosen anointed talents and lost them all when their shows ended. To be honest, I think it helps that Keke, Leon and Ariana were never labeled to be their television characters so it was easier for them to build their careers. While Victoria Justice, Miranda Cosgrove, Drake Bell and the members of Big Time Rush will always be linked to Nick.
It's weird now that you mention it, the white actors/actresses they pushed kinda flopped, whereas the non-white cast had more success before/after their shows.
The things is casting Victoria Justice alongside huge broadway trained artists is the big mistake nickelodeon had done. Even when they give them less lines, they still overpower Victoria in terms of musical abilities.
I remember all the hype leading up to the episode where Freak the Freak out premiered, it was supposed to be the main single for the episode where a couple different songs premiered. But Give it Up, Elizabeth and Ariana's duet, ended up being my favorite song in the whole show.
Honnestly Victoria Justice completely had the potentiel to become a famous icon/ popstar, but playing a character as hated (overhated in my opinion) as Tori Vega ruined her chances because apparently a lot of people can't tell the difference biiitwenn a character and an actor
Personally i think the thing that stopped Victoria from being as famous was that she doesnt have a “transformation” moment. No era to separate from the next, no strategy etc2. “The Way” was such a big contrast toCat Valentine that it created a whole other fresh identity for people to be hooked on. wala
I personally think she would've had the potential to become a iconic actress and star in more TV shows and movies, but unfortunately, a stupid rumor ruined her career and no studios wanted to hire her. Fortunately, Netflix is booking Victoria a lot lately, so she's better off acting than singing, like in the same level of Zendaya. The same can be said for the other former Nick stars, they're all better off acting except for Ariana.
I think one BIG reason Nickelodeon was bad at promoting their artists music is because they never let clear that they were artists. For example, all those years I watched Big Time Rush as a kid I didn't even realized they were an actual band. And I know I'm not the only one. edit: nickelodeon didn't promote my music right either
I was shocked when I found out they actually toured and was a real band I always assumed they were characters from a show who just happened to sing in it as well
To be honest as someone who grew up with both Disney and Nickelodeon..... I always saw the main character would always be big in future so when I found out and watched Ariana getting bigger than the whole cast of victorious was mind blowing. For real
I wasn’t surprised that ariana blew up only because she sung a lot in victorious and made it obvious she was better then the main character (tori) her voice was very soulful which shocked a lot of people and made us wanna hear more. when she finally dropped her first song it was just like this is what she was bound to do lol
i think liz gillies could’ve also went far if she really got serious with music after victorious even though her style of punk rock wasn’t as popular as pop music at the time.
@@hannahhelton3789 almost everyone in the industry fits to the “beauty standards” and yet only a handful of them become successful, it really depends on your talent lol
wait a sec, I just watched this part in the video...I don't think BTR was a band before starting the show?......I thought they were put together in the show and then made into a band........
You know it's crazy, when I Carly came out in 2007 I remember thinking how ridiculous it was that someone who made Internet videos would be so popular and known around her school. The series actually makes a lot more sense today than it did when it came out
A spanish coment: pero si eso siempre tuvo sentido desde ese año TH-cam era una cosa muy divertida y diferente esos años, seguro no lo viviste en su época pre google
big time rush will always be the funniest to me, since when i was watching the series, i thought they were a parody of boy bands....not an actual one that the show is trying(and failing) to promote
tbh i always thought BTR was successful before i took the time to look back and go “oh, that was all in my head?” bc MAN i was such a big fucking fan, I made my mom take me to a concert and BUY ME a grossly expensive tshirt at the venue 😭😭
a funny/sad fact is that when they started to become more famous, one direction, who opened btr shows at the time, explodes with WMYB. in my opinion, they sing well, but nickelodeon always exagered at the autotune, like, the voices always sonded kinda robotic, and the songs kinda look the same at some point, feels like nick tried to hard to "look cool" and "make stars like disney" but ended feeling forced, like u said, sounded like a parody of boybands
I am not a big Ariana fan, but this is true, she has great talent, she was really put tin the background in Victorious and her amazing voice was always mixed so that others would shine more or so she didn't stand out, and Sony music, producers of the show didn't even sign her a record deal, republic records found her through TH-cam covers. Nickelodeon had a diamond, and they threw it away, putting their focus on not so shiny rocks
I mean, it's a little of both. I think we all knew who Ariana was because of Victorious, and she was seriously popular while she was on the show (relatively, for a Nickelodeon actress, obviously not compared to what she is now). Nickelodeon gave her visibility and those of us who liked her searched her on TH-cam and social media. I was subscribed to her on my old account back in 2010. We were all Victorious fans who were waiting for Nick to really put her in the game already and make their ensemble sitcom... an ensemble musical act, too. But nope. And that's kinda ridiculous, too. Because Disney was producing all these pop starlets with multiple sitcoms and movie franchises they had been propping up for years, and Victorious was their catch-up. So they could've promoted the three/four female leads as pop soloists AND as a group act in their show. Almost kind of similar to how the K-pop industry works nowadays, now that I think about it. Multiple musical projects going on at once for successful and prominent talents. They could've made serious bank out of all of them if they weren't so focused on hard-selling ONLY Victoria Justice.
agreed, nickelodeon gave her the platform that allowed more people to hear her music and get her talent to be noticed. After only her first album, she definitely blew up all on her own and continued growing from there
I’m kinda glad Nickelodeon didnt pursue Ariana for a music career. I lowkey think she would of failed if Nickelodeon handled her music career. Ariana is now a multi-platinum, 2x Grammy winning artist
I believe this too. I notice here that all the Nickelodeon musicians who came even remotely close to some sort of major success were all musicians who went about things their own way.
I honestly am glad Nickelodeon had this issue. As a Nick fan from my childhood, watching since the early 90’s, it felt more wholesome generally overall and like they didn’t have to prove anything. They were not Disney levels of success, but successful enough to stay relevant and alive. So many amazing shows with actual values while they may not have been factories for pop stars, that didn’t need to be their focus.
The problem is Nick ended up replacing good shows with garbage. Even shows about "aspiring pop stars" happened in the early 2000s, such as "Taina". Shows like "How to Rock", "Victorious" & even "House of Anubis" got replaced with "Marvin Marvin", "The Thundermans", "Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn" and "Breadwinners".
@@KRSonbe well it’s as the video said, the time of attempting to create Popstars has passed which is why they stocked with the comedy factor shows like Henry danger and nick dawn etc
@@quincyn2369 or how about create a show with no ulterior motives. An actor should not take a job with the false perception that they may inherently become more just because they will be the lead role. And since it’s children we are talking about, the pressure put on them could be lifelong. Hire for the job not to be innovative before anything jumps off. Let the kid become a star on TV, and if they are talented, work hard and meet the right people, other facets can open naturally, rather than being forced open.
Miranda Cosgrove never really fit the popstar mold, and didn't have any exceptional singing talent. But she was the highest paid child actress at some point, had a great time voicing Margo from Despicable Me, had a normal college life, and is now back to acting; so I would say she did pretty well for herself.
She never graduated from college, despite attending for 6 years. And there are some lurid rumors about Cosgrove's college life, which may be nonsense, but who knows?
@snowflakes Or perhaps producers tried to pressure Miranda into completely changing her image Into a sex symbol and glitter like image like Ariana. Ariana may be successful but she no longer has the luxury of being her true self, making her own choices, or doing what's comfortable for her. Hollywood has groomed her into a life size Barbie doll and now she's forced to keep it up whether she likes it or not or her career declines. Never underestimate the real struggles of a young star who suddenly "made it big".
When it comes to Victoria, I also believe it was the choice of the song released as her debut that stunted her chances. When Ariana released The Way, it was a much more mature sound for her (at the time) that garnered attention and drew comparisons to early Mariah Carey. It was a clear distinction between Ariana Grande the recording artist, and Cat Valentine the dim witted character on the show. Whereas Victoria’s debut, Gold, sounded like a song that Tori Vega could’ve sung at any point in the show’s run. There was never a clear separation between her and her character.
I personally believe that a couple of other reasons why Ariana Grande surpassed her Nickelodeon & Disney counterparts is because she wasn’t the main character of a show, she utilized the new & upcoming rise of social media, and she basically took her career into her own hands. She was undoubtedly one of the most loved & relatable characters on Victorious, while she never had to go under the same level of extreme scrutiny, public attention & maintaining that “good girl image” that her other main female child stars like Miley, Selena, Demi, etc had to go through during their peak childhood fame. I also remember when her second album was coming out she used Instagram to promote tf out of it, and she even did a daily countdown for the album and one of the lead single’s (Problem) that legit broke a lot of charting records at the time. She also carved her own lane by uploading TH-cam covers of extremely noteworthy songs where she essentially did her own marketing for her music talent in a newly found network (aka TH-cam) that wasn’t over saturated at the time. She truly was in her own lane, and basically spearheaded her own music career outside of Nickelodeon while she got free promotion from them as a beloved kid’s character whose show got played on the network 24/7 for millions of people all across the world to see.
Ariana Grande also debuted in the 2010s, when self-advocacy and awareness of abuse in the industry start to become a thing. Also the rise of the internet/social media was starting to happen, and I feel like that played a huge role into why Ariana Grande became popular and why Disney Channel did not make any stars in the 2010s.
i disagree with "while she never had to go under the same level of extreme scrutiny, public attention & maintaining that “good girl image”" but everything else i agree.
I think its also worth noting that even though their shows, Unfabulous and True Jackson VP, didn't last long and weren't huge hits, Emma Roberts and Keke Palmer are now bigger stars than any of the Nickelodeon leads who actually had the hype machine pushing them. Seems like Nick is just always putting their eggs in the wrong baskets.
Maybe it was at the time but people don't really talk about it as much as Drake and Josh or ICarly. People just remember it as "Oh yeah that Emma Roberts show"
It's ironic to me that Miranda, Victoria, and Big Time Rush were the ones who were heavily promoted by Nick, yet Ariana Grande and Keke Palmer ended up being the bigger stars out of that network today.🤔
Didn't Miranda Cosgrove voice Margot in the Despicable Me films she hasn't the financial success as Ariana but she's not poor. That tour bus crash did effect her career who knows how big she would have been
Nickelodeon’s viewership success came mainly from spongebob. They’d air spongebob several times during the day. The only live show that was really competing with Disney was icarly. Every Disney show was successful viewership wise, while Nickelodeon relied on spongebob and icarly. I remember reading several viewership articles back in 2008-2012 and spongebob was carrying that network.
And it’s funny cause it still is till this day growing up I never like Nickelodeon sitcoms I only went to Nickelodeon for cartoons but I would watch Disney for sitcoms but not gonna lie victorious and I Carly were the only sitcoms I liked it but when Victorious ended around 2013 kids weren’t watching tv no more they were now transitioning to Social Media/their Phones so in the end both Disney and nick were dying after 2013
@@Goyarxrd I used to watch nick for cartoons too. I'll give them that, they had some great ones back in the day like spongebob(the older episodes), Danny phantom, fairly odd parents and many more. Disney definitely had better sitcoms. I think drake and josh is the only other nick sitcom I can remember watching all of the time other than icarly and victorious. Big time rush too(I was gonna say the jonas brothers show but I don't remember if that was on nick or disney lmao). Now nick relies HEAVILY on spongebob and sometimes fairly odd parents to the point where they reduced both shows to mindless garbage smh. I guess they know how much those shows carried them and now they wanna bleed them dry smh
@@murasakino101 It’s interesting cause I think back in the 2000s, Nickelodeon had better cartoons and Disney had better live action shows, but Disney lowkey has better cartoons now (Not a fan of live action shows on either network right now).
The reason why Nick's viewership success came from SpongeBob is simple---it was the only thing they aired 90% of the time. People who would leave Nick on for hours would see nothing but SpongeBob. After some years, viewers started realizing their was no variety on the channel. If they put "Fairly Oddparents" or "Victorious" on as much, those shows would be the #1 show on the network.
They aired so many SpongeBob reruns every day that once I set the dvr to “record all episodes”, they had to keep deleting them to record the shows they liked watching. That’s how much it was on. It was seriously that popular.
to be fair... the grammys gave ari that award to be petty and out of spite, since she didn't want to perform the setlist they wanted her to sing. they tore away her dream of getting her first grammy in person and being like the icons/legends she aspired to be. THEN they bait her into the expectation of another grammy win the year after, had her promote it and perform. then gave her awards to others...
@@shinystarthatisnotsoshiny Award shows in general are kind of a joke. Just remember that in 2017 the Oscars nominated Boss Baby over a silent voice and one time Shakespeare in Love won an Oscar over Star Wars (I think.)
crazy how Ariana Grande is now one of the biggest artists of all time, passing all of her peers and is up with Rihanna, Taylor, Adele, Beyoncé etc. she’s the most streamed female artist of all time, biggest act that debuted in the 2010s, countless of records, countless of hits, countless of smash albums and more.
Her success is because her music is hers. Her music wasn't made for a character, show or network. There was no external influence to fit a template. Ariana's musical style and image has been between her and her producer. Bigger risk but also the chance for greater reward.
@@conniethesconnie that’s partly the truth as she had some influence on her music but she really wanted to be RnB from the jump and start out with more soulful music. Her manager Scooter Braun (he also had/has Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, etc under him) made her do pop for a little while. I think it was to help build her up and get out to the public
If you don't know, Ariana debuting a #1 album in B200 was so mindblowing because it's very rare for a NEW artist to debut that high that time. It might not be quite shocking because it seems very normal now for new artists to easily debut a #1 album despite being new like Billie and Olivia.
@Jasmine N. I'm not a billie fan. But if Ariana can only sing about sex, Billie can sing about depression. Also the singing thing, Billie can stay on key and do basic singing dynamics. Just because Ariana mixes high doesn't mean she's the only one who can sing.
I loved Taina so much. Tbh I do believe racism plays a role in the disrespect people pay her and the show. It was deeper and more relatable than a lot of the shows that people love to reference being so good from Nickelodeon.
I think the reason Ariana grande is who she is, is due to her being gifted with her singing abilities. She’s one of the best I’ve heard from our generation. She was born to sing.
Well, that’s sweet of you to think that, but she was just marketed well. Talent has nothing to do with success. Sure, she can sing well, but so can plenty of people, and they don’t become famous. Becoming a pop star is about marketing and advertising with a good record label.
*Hundredth like* Which is make Jamie Lynn Spears more successful than Alexa Nikolas, Jennette McCurdy and Victoria Justice (just like they did with Ariana Grande) as a way to insult their sweeter, more egalitarian personalities because we just couldn’t say anything bad about JLS without being labeled as misogynistic even though without Britney Spears, she wouldn’t think have even been relevant.
@@kittykittybangbang9367 Nick has a LONG history of fumbling the bag. Remember, back in late 2012, they cancelled all their tween/teen shows at the time (How to Rock, Victorious, The Troop, Bucket & Skinner's Epic Adventures, Big Time Rush) and started alienating that audience for a "new direction" & to attract a "younger audience", i.e. ages 11 and under. Those new shows (like "The Thundermans", "Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn", & "Sanjay & Craig") failed to do as well popularity and ratingswise as the previous shows. Disney channel and FOX/ABC Family never dropped the ball like that.
I feel like the problem with BTR is that they didn’t continue as a group. They went on hiatus as soon as the show ended. They halted any kind of momentum they had. Drake Bell…I will never understand how he didn’t become big in the music industry
Nah I think Big time rush actually did it well. They went on hiatus then they became a band again from 2021 onward. This allows them to capitalize on that nostalgia and childhood memories of their fanbases. I went to their concert in 2022 and it was packed. They also release new music now.
Honestly, I love how Nickelodeon allowed their stars the freedom to explore their musical paths and contracts outside rather than tying their successes solely to the channel. That way they can blossom in their own way. I never hear anything bad about Nickelodeon from their stars in regards to their contracts the way we hear of similar channels
True. Many Disney stars ended up with some sort of Mental Health issues, which is sad. I think the only prick in Nick was the ultra creepy producer who shall not be named.
@@claudiabenigno2796 Him and Butch Hartman. Nick’s hands definitely aren’t clean, either. The only thing they have going for them is they never had a weird purity culture where just because the channel is aimed at kids both the shows and all of their stars needed to be squeaky clean at all times.
@@Canonicallycreative Butch Hartman wasn't involved heavily with those teen stars, unlike that creepy producer, who made those creepy things to those young girls.
Funny thing is there are people out there who believe that the creepy producer who must not be named is completely innocent because no one has spoken up (as far as I know). As much as I dislike him he made good shows which were also elevated by the many good actors from that channel.
Uhhh dam Schneider and nick kids aren't exactly better off than Disney kids. Selena gomez, raven, Hillary duff, Sprouse twins, all ended up fine. Honestly both had pros and cons to being on these networks in different ways.
And then trying to get involved with the glory and trying to act as though we were stupid enough not to see, that she was pushed aside in the show when she was outsinging every character. They lowered her mic. Raised Victoria's mic. And gave her a dumb personality. 2017 -2019 when she was at her peak in the career as a singer not actress, they saw oops she got way more potential and is way more relentless than we thought. Now in 2019 we see Nick on TH-cam constantly upload videos such as "thank you, cat" And a month worths of cat and Ariana videos. And giving her tribute once. Why didn't they appreciate her way sooner. Hmm but as every one who watched victorious knows the whole spin was on Victoria... 🤦🏽♂️
Which is why on Nickrewinds they put something like "Ariana Grande's musical moments" or "Cat's 7 dings," "Cat's best musical moments " cause Nick knows they missed out on giving Ariana Grande a chance
In high school I watched Victorious with the kids I babysat. I studied music and voice and spotted Arianna as being slightly better than the rest of the cast vocally right away. So I looked her up but I also looked up Victoria and Liz as well because I still enjoyed their talent. Ariana was posting covers all the time. She even had some technology to make her own background music that she would mess with. She was finding all kinds of ways to perform random shows for free on her own whether it be a holiday performance or a volunteer program with music. Victoria did a bit on her own but it was more like a cover every 6 months or so. To be honest, I think a part of Ariana's success was her literally working her butt off on her own. Yes, she was a better singer. But she was also significantly more passionate about creating music.
I feel like a lot of the reason why Nick stars failed is because Nick was never that serious about making music because their brand really relied on being quirky. I mean when you think of Disney you think of magic, wonder, imagination and just stardom and amazing experience. When you think of Nick you think of Slime, Gags, Jokes and a Wacky time. Not to mention the general vibes of the shows were very odd or offbeat. It’s a bit jarring to see Miranda Cosgrove make fun of a cranky man with a wart and make a spaghetti smoothie then listen to her new single. And don’t get me wrong Disney shows were weird too but never as weird as most Nick shows were. I can’t imagine that was a very easy translation. They probably realized this and TRIED to make Victoria Justice something. But she obviously was not performing well and by that point Disney was phasing out most of their big names that raked in the millions already. They also did this while the world was slowly moving to streaming. I think Ariana Grande wasn’t really ignored based off of a perception of lesser talent than Victoria Justice I just think Nick really didn’t try enough and when they did try with Victoria it was too little too late. I mean Keke Palmer, Elizabeth Gillies, Andre Harris, Miranda Cosgrove, Drake Bell, Kira Kosarin, NBB, etc, etc all could’ve had a more significant career and made Nick a lot more money if the Company was able to properly integrate their brand with their musical talent. Which they never did and never will.
you just summed up why I always liked Disney better than Nick. I could not stand to watch Nick because of all the weird stuff they used to do, some of which I found gross. Disney shows were more composed and relatable (in some way)
Considering a weirdo produced them you’re not wrong. I grew up more on Nick anyway bc that ‘quirkiness’ fit in my house lmao. Even my parents watched iCarly and Drake and Josh with us 😂 it was just fun and quirky family friendly type sit com stuff.
My points: The problem with Victoria Justice's music: it was always to basic and boring and it never evolved and Columbia barely promoted her. They bet on Victoria to much, sure she had the it factor but musically never stood out ,she could belt power pop hits but never showed more raw talent like her recent song Treat Myself. Big Time Rush: was to much related to their tv show. At some point people didn't know if they were a band or a show, and also bad promotion of course. they had hits but their image was to boring and they were a little older than their competition, people lost interest and found it in more younger and new talent like One Direction. Ariana came out of nowhere and blew everyone away. She had good managment and undeniable talent. She was so different from her nickelodeon persona it was easy for people to separate them, while Victoria was basically tori and btr the show outshined the band. And Miranda Cosgrove was never popstar potential ,she was just to awkward and never fit the part ,she could somewhat sing but her talent was definitely being a comediane. She is so funny just follow her on insta and you'll see.
The thing about BTR is that the band became real BECAUSE of the show, as opposed to the Jonas Brothers who were an already well-established band before getting a show on Disney Channel. On top of that, the JoBros had already been successful for awhile and had a built-in fan base, so what they were doing as a band and within their show could be seen as separate entities, even tho it felt very intertwined
About the Being pop star material or showing raw talent, Selena Gomez sometimes is like that specially in her first albums, yet she’s been successful. With a better promotion Miranda and Victoria (now she has better music) could’ve done better.
@@Purplestream15 Yo me too, those guys rock and their old music still holds up (most of it). I even enjoy their new music, Sucker, Only Human and their new song Who's In Your Head
@Jasmine N. The Jonas Brothers came before the show. They were already succesfull the show actually slowed them down if anything,it wasn't even popular it fell off soon. They kinda fell off to around 2013 but made a comeback, because they were already established. They had hits and grammy nominations before the show stared also, they were brothers it was different than 4 actors who form a band. Also Disney was better at promoting and getting hits than nickelodeon.
Ariana was really serious about pursuing a music career ever since she was a child. Thats why she did broadway and theater in her early years. Nickelodean HELPED her not MADE her to be the star that she is today.
honestly , the biggest reason ariana became successful is branding . she ditched her “iconic” red hair and went for a half-up ponytail and did 90s inspired r&b music. which, not only showcased her true talent, but also made an impact outside of the youth talent industry and into the music industry . she also constantly rebrands herself during album eras . for example , after her debut album, she transformed herself into a mega popstar image, taking inspiration from britney spears and other pop divas. then, she gained traction from the dangerous woman era where she fully broke away from nickelodeon. then , she started her “aesthetic” era with sweetener and then became an icon with thank u, next. and now no one ever brings up nickelodeon when talking about her.
The biggest reason she succeeded is because she isn't a normal person she was born into Hollywood and has been carried her whole life ... she wouldn't be anybody if the big 3 didn't push her music and face
@@arianamoonlightvocals3823 there isnt a single musician in the world on her level.... without the help of the big 3 .....take it how u want it.... its just Facts.
The problem with Nick was that they didn't Make it clear their talents were actually real musicians, like the members of Big Time Rush seemed like a band from a tv show and people never knew they were an actual band because nick were bad at marketing their artist. The reason this whole pop star factory thing worked for Disney was that they not only released soundtracks fro their shows and made the Miley and Selena for example sing in their shows, but they also.released music with them outside of the shows, so people knew that they were actual singers in real life. If nicked actually released music with BTR for example outside the show, and maybe used better marketing, people wouldn't see them as just a band from a show
I think theres another factor at play. In the 00s, Nickelodeon shows always had noticeably more "edge" than disney shows-- still a kids show but not diabetically saccharine. I'd surmise that Nick's audience skewed slightly older and less sheltered than disney. Its easier to hook a kid who is a little younger and has had fewer cultural exposures because there is less to compete with.
True dat. One of the things that made Schneider's Bakery shows superior to most Disney fare was that Dan wasn't afraid to push the envelope a bit; toss in some under the radar stuff. Victorious is a prime example of that. The Mouse plays it too safe.
It was really weird in 2013, after watching my last Nickelodeon show (Sam and Cat) suddenly seeing Ariana go from just an actress in a kids network to being a enormous popstar??? When the music video for Problem dropped, I was shook
@@deen8100 Same!! I used to watch her covers on youtube (remember osnapitzari?? and the live streams??) and was obsessed with her and Liz, felt so proud
I think the reason Big Time Rush never made it big was because One Direction was taking over, it was extremely hard to compete with the biggest boyband in the world during that time
Combined with her rare talent, what worked for Ariana is probably the very fact that she was neglected. She was the deserving underdog who got overlooked. I never watched Victorious but I know those actors from social media. One day I watched an interview where Ariana took the hosts around her apsrtment and to her little recording nook (she wasn't this huge superstar back then) and then she sang a little for them. And I just remember being stunned into silence. Like wtf, is this girl even real? And I remember being so annoyed that she wasn't the lead or got promoted as much. There's this strong emotion that underdogs create within most of us.
The problem with Victoria Justice aside not having a manager as good as Ariana's was that she fitted the pop star mold way too perfectly (model like features, a mature voice with a juvenile flair). Ariana didn't and that made her more accessible to the audience and sure did helped for her having doll like features and a Mariah Carey-esque voice.
I think they had the same manager, scooter Braun . It’s said that he ruined Victoria’s career in favour of Ariana. The rumours about their feud, Victoria’s jealousy… now we know it was a lie but even now many of Ariana‘s fans hate Victoria, she lost the fandom and Hollywood’s strength to promote her work. Scooter is the same guy that bought Taylor swift’s label and now she has to re-release her music to own the copyright
Victoria maybe is not the pop star that wears controversial clothes or have feuds with everyone, but the leaks of what was supposed to be her first album is good, same quality as Ariana’s first album
The problem was that she had ZERO creative control. Nick wanted her to be a bubbly pop star and she wanted to do something else. So she signed off and focused on her acting. Listen to her recent music. She's good, the wrong move was her management
@@harshasewlani5312 That's why the importance of a good manager because at the early stages of Ariana's music career, she could have some sort of balance between bubbly pop and Rihanna-esque music.
I remember seeing old interviews of Ariana, and she would get asked how it like balancing a music career (with the release of Yours Truly) and being an actress, she responded along the lines of finding a balance. Later down the line it had been revealed 2013 she had been working on her debut for 7 years. Safe to say she was a hardworking person for the get go. I bet was given the chance to grow her audience/fan base from Nickelodeon, which carried over to her music career, plus Ariana’s really pretty.

All of them were. According to their different voices, acting and song writing. You can’t judge someone’s talent by their vocal range, Taylor swift and Adele are talented but each one of them according to their vocal range. In the series jade had a stronger voice than cat, not because of that she was more talented, just a different voice. Same with tori
I think that part of Ariana's success was because we knew her as Cat Valentine, a bubbly, sometimes weird and childish girl, and her first album was a lot more mature, so we wanted to see that new side of her, and that may have kind of boosted her career too. I'm not saying that's the only factor on her success, she it's extremely talented and she was my favourite character in Victorious, and I've been also supporting her career since My Everything, I just like to think that Nickelodeon helped her and boosted her career by giving her the chance to portray Cat, and by that, giving her the chance to show something completely different to what people knew
taina was actually pretty highly rated and i remember it being popular when i was a kid. Apparently, "the real reason why the show was cancelled was due to behind-the-scenes business decisions and the network clashing with Vidal's management team, which included her mother. "
Am I the only one who thinks it’s okay to criticize Taina (not just the BTS (behind the scenes, not Bantang Boys, but also the show itself)? And no, I’m not doing it to crush childhoods, but because if Nickelodeon didn’t make it, it would live up to its full potential.
Yeah they were never bad and tbh most their songs were pretty good and I loved the show growing up, I think they just wanted to do their own things in life and music wasn't long term for them and that's ok on the other hand I do feel they could've rivaled the Johnas Brothers more what hurt them was that they were characters in a show before they were performers unlike the johnas Brothers who were already a band and they just happened to get a show
Half of the listens come from the nostalgic millennials (hello) who miss early 2010's and the other half from Tiktok teens who found Boyfriend through the app haha
What’s so shocking about Ariana Grande is that everyone who watched Victorious (before Ariana got big) knew Ariana was the best singer in the show and knew she was getting sidelined. In the meantime, Nickelodeon didn’t see any of her talents. I was a fan of Ariana’s singing before she became big, and, literally, many Victorious music videos would have fans commenting how amazing Cat Valentine’s singing was. I’m just confused how Nickelodeon did not see what every Victorious fan knew….

Watching Ariana grande on victorious I instantly knew she would big a huge musical icon. Her voice stood out way more than most of the other nickelodeon actors/actresses.
@@MD19853 that’s your opinion. In my opinion, her voice improved significantly after the show. I actually think that Elizabeth Gillies’s voice was beautiful. Ariana voice was better than some actresses and actors then but not as much as now. Her voice was basic atm.
I have to give credit to Ariana, she and her team did everything right. She was already a talented singer, and the comparisons with Maria Carey also helped put her in the spotlight. The best thing she did was distancing herself from the cookie cutter or bubble gum pop kids network music by collaborating with a hip hop artist on her first song. She already had a network outside nickelodeon.. She was friends with people from the entertainment, dated someone who had street cred and wasn't a part of the kids network circle, released catchy music outside of nicK and collaborated with other well known artistes familiar by the general audience( Nathan Sykes, Babyface, big Sean, Mac Miller..). And apparently she had been recording her debut album through out her victorious career. She released the second album after Sam and cat and that one already solidified her place as the IT pop girl especially collaborating with artists like Nicki
When you think about it, Nickelodeon didn't started out as a musical company like Disney. That's also why it was easy for Disney to make popstars. Nickelodeon originally started out as a animation comedy channel (like Cartoon Network). But what they did with Taina, Drake and Josh, Victorious was a major failure...
Ariana took charge of her own career by releasing covers on TH-cam with some of her costars and getting her own name out there. They would let her sing on the show but never to the point of outshining the lead which… was inevitable given her talent. But thankfully she didn’t get suppressed.
I never understood why Nickelodeon overlooked Ariana as badly as they did. The girl already had at least one Broadway cast recording under her belt well before her Nickelodeon debut, whereas Victoria Justice (to my knowledge) didn't have a musical background to her name until Victorious came out.
she was in a nick movie called “spectacular” before Victorious and it was more or less like victorious because it was a school show choir theme so a lot of singing
@@Dani-ql7xb i thought it was because victoria was on zoey 101 & dan decided to create a show with her as a main character. she said that she was studying in an arts school & that was how ‘victorious’ came about.
I don't think they overlooked her at all. she was a main character on the show and ended up getting a spinoff as well. I believe they actually did try to start her music career, but she switched to a different label.
I knew something was special about Ariana Grande back then. Nickolodeon kept trynna put Victoria Justice as the star but when I heard Ariana and Liz Gilles perform the song "Give it up" I knew both of them had more talent than Victoria it was laughable. Not only that but Ariana's character for "Kat" was golden in the show. She played her character so well and had a huge fan base off just her character she played. Couple that with her musical talent and it's no wonder she ended up being bigger than the whole cast.

He’s an extremely talented actor who went on to go the indie/artsy film route which is pretty uncommon for Disney/Nickelodeon alum. Super underrated but probably one of my favourite talents to come from either conglomerates

I liked most of the video but there is some wrong information here. Mostly with "Taina". That show lasted for 2 seasons, not 1, the soundtrack came out in 2002 & Nick cancelled the show after 2 years despite it being a ratings hit. They canceled it because Christina Vidal (Taina) threatened to lawyer up against Nickelodeon because the network execs were trying to skirt around child labor laws with her and abuse her rights. They did the same to Amanda Bynes at that time (look at what happened to her after awhile) & Nick Cannon but since Vidal didn't "play the same game", they cancelled her show, despite scripts for a season 3 being written at the time. Also, "How to Rock" was based on a popular book series, not a HSM knockoff like "Victorious".
and "Every Witch Way" was an American adaptation of the Spanish show "Grachi," not a "Wizards of Waverly Place" knockoff but I'm guessing those were just jokes besides the Taina thing
So I actually had a production teacher at film school who was a producer on victorious actually on several of the nickelodeon shows you mentioned and I asked her about this. She said that Ariana never actually gave nickelodeon the rights to her Voice so they could only use her sparingly I don’t know any further details about it or how that works that was just the explanation I was given when I asked.
I knew it bro cause I always knew something had happened behind scenes cause it’s no way in hell a Billion Dollar corporation like Viacom/Nickelodeon did not notice that she was more talented and way better singer then the lead role and can potentially become one of the biggest pop stars in this generation and make them millions/billions 💀

I think part to Ariana's success was her image too. She had a certain Lolita styling with her hair and wardrobe, and bringing back old-school style r&b music. It was a unique combination
It also doesn't hurt that she is a legitimately excellent singer. Like quite literally one of the best in the mainstream right now. It's no wonder she became more successful because she could actually sing her ass off. I'm sure the rest can hold a tune, but Ariana can sing sing.
I think Disney has had small revivals here and there, especially with the Descendants series. But ultimately they knew cable was dying out and slowly started switching their audience to their Disney+ platform and started marketing towards the now adults who grew up with the channel, with shows like The Mandolorian and the new proud family. Their market is no longer kids overall.
I mean I liked her as Lola from zoey 101, she was more likeable in that. They probably should just made a Lola spin off show imo. I bet Dan made her the star because she probably give him a bunch of pictures of her feet UwU
Awesome video bro. I’m 28 and almost cried realizing your correct about never having shows like those again. Kids these days won’t understand that was the peak of television when it came to kids shows.
Sucks but they’ll have their own form of entertainment that will eventually fall into irrelevance that they will look back at like we do with television
@@Dr.Farewell That is because the times change quicker nowadays than back then, making 20-30 year olds nostalgic and mourning the old times eceb though they aren’t old. Yet, the times they had grown up in exist no more, giving them a good reason to feel that way.
As someone who grew up with these shows and loved watching them I think we shouldn't praise these shows too much. Revisiting them shows you that they weren't really that great we are just blinded by nostalgia. Victorious has a writing which is all over the place, plots that go nowhere and is messy in general. Most their characters are one dimensional and flanderized.
I think for Victorious, even though Victoria Justice was clearly the main character, there was so much talent on that show that they could have pursued besides just Victoria, like Ariana obviously, but Elizabeth Gillies was also on Broadway and she had great vocals too and Leon Thomas is also incredibly talented. I think that for shows that try to push a musical act they typically have one performer, but Victorious had a lot and the biggest hits were never just Victoria's, Freak the Freak Out was huge, but so was Take a Hint, Give it Up and Song 2 U. I think part of what missed for Victoria Justice's music career is that the message wasn't uniform.
I thin if Liz Giles want she could be a big singer but she choose acting she sings a few songs in dynasty per season so its okay. Ariana was also of the best singer she and Liz Giles are great! Only my option i think Victoris Justice has not such a powerfull voice then they two!!!
Moral of the story: If you push people into the background, they’ll probably rise up and end up being more successful than you ever could have imagined.
I’m glad you recognize the actual first show to do this, Taina! Christina Vidal was incredible and eventually ended up in Disney in the movie Brink and Freaky Friday.
I think it's also that Disney is just better at finding and recognizing talents. Many singers who came out of Disney are incredibly talented, their music can stand their ground outside of the Disney shows. Nick was letting some foot fetish producer cast young girls bare footed. They had Ariana and casted her as a side character who's very dumb, when they should've recognized her talent and wrote a future superstar persona for her. 🤷🏻♀️
In an ironic way, it was better than Arianna hid her talent, because then when she came out, it felt more real and surprising, rather than if she was just promoted on Nick, she would just seem like a generic industry plant that we're just being told to like. Which is pretty much most of Nickolodein's artists. Like who actually was Big Time Rush other than a network formed group, compared to On Direction or the Jonas brothers?
Yeah, and I think Disney just had planned strategy from beginning to end thought out. So they knew precisely who tho pick and what to do. While Nickelodeon was kind of fumbling around not going 100% with ant plan.
honestly if things were different with Ariana it might have turned out differently, she might not have posted those videos that got her recognized. and that Disney image could've tainted her mainstream image.. i'm glad that it worked out the way it did as nature intended.
Arianas smart got not signing with Nickelodeon + Columbia records. She didn’t have to do the songs they wanted her to do. So she signed with republic records! She did it all by herself if you ask me. She’s very smart for that
I knew that Liz, Ariana and Leon were on Broadway before Victorious, but didn't realise how good they (girls) were until Give It Up. After that I always wondered why they didn't give more songs to Liz and Ariana. Also why (in the show) they always went to Tori when they needed a singer when there were better options.
I remember loving to watch Ariana's covers on TH-cam while Victorious was still airing because I couldn't get enough of her and wished they would have her sing more. I'm glad she got the fame she deserved for her amazing voice.
tbh i remember listening to victoria justice’s songs back then all the time 😂 my child mind was fully confident that she was more popular than anyone else and was known by the world, but one day i found out about how successful ariana had become and was shocked to say the least.
I remember watching the icarly and victorious combo episode and replaying the scene where Ariana sings “he didn’t say I couldn’t sing” over and over again because it was so good that I felt like a sailor being entranced by a siren
Taina and Romeo are unlocking very specific memories for me that I had forgotten about until now. The opening to Taina is something I never thought I would forget, but this is all flooding back to me.
Victoria has a decent voice, but Leon, Ariana, and Liz were definitely better vocalists. I understood that she was the star of the show, but it always bugged me that the co-stars didn’t get more chances to shine. For example, for their cover of “Don’t You Forget About Me” (from The Breakfast Bunch episode), Liz should have been the lead vocalist. She has that rock tone, as evidenced by her song “You Don’t Know Me.”
Something about Nickelodeon’s shows always seemed a little corny compared to Disney. Like lower quality despite having superior sets and production. Some of the music was ok but Disney just had far better music. Hannah Montana’s and high school musical songs were insanely catchy

I can only imagine the Nick Execs glaring at Dan Schneider the second they heard Ariana Grande sing on Victorious. Just think, it could've been the "Ariana Grande Show" but instead Dan Schneider was all like "Hey, I worked with Victoria Justice on other shows, this means I must give her her own show!" and look how well that turned out for Victoria's singing career...Honestly, the most unbelievable episode of Victorious was that episode where Tori becomes a legit popstar, some music producer hears her audition tape and goes "THAT'S OUR STAR!" When Jade and Cat also sent in audition tapes that blew Tori out of the water.........as always.
i could easily see the same show but with Cat as the likeable main character and Tori as the kinda dumb but likeable 2nd main. It would work with some tweaks in the script. Possibly making Ariana have a role as Tori to keep the name of the show, or just get another name with a pun for Ariana.
I LOVED Taina! The actress who played Taina is named Christina Vidal. She can be heard as the lead vocalist in Freaky Friday with Lindsay Lohan. I had no idea the show ran so short, though. I was in middle school when it came out. Taina was VERY reminiscent of That's So Raven, meaning the amount of time they spent in the halls at school. I mean it DIRECTLY could've been produced by the same company although Taina came out first. That's So Raven didn't come out until high school so yeah, similarities. Both were VERY GOOD shows.
Nickelodeon didn't back up Ariana, Ariana herself did everything in her influence to become the breakout star that she is today. She signed with a good record label, and released music that resonated with the general public. Too bad the other Nick acts didn't get the break that Ariana had. Nickelodeon really screwed up a lot of them.

Disney used to have their stars in their commercials or have sneak peaks of their music acts. I remember on Disney they'll play a music video between tv shows and tell you the album is now available. Never recall Nick doing that at all.

@@betterthanyou.9530 Here is the thing, Lizzie McGuire was not the kind of show that intertwined music with acting like that. She (Lizzie the character) wasn't trying to become a star, it wasn't like what they did with Hannah Montana
@@musiclover_kb4913 yes, but Hillary is still how Disney cracked the actress to music Star pipeline. It was less about the character she played and show she played in and more about the actress herself. As much as we loved taina, I don’t think any of us were ever like “oh my gosh it’s Christina!“ the way we were for hilary. She just wasn’t relatable to most of us. Even me having just left Panama with my latino ass can’t recall even knowing her name until I was much older and looking down memory lane. Disney made its mission to market the actors so they could own them completely. Whether you liked a Disney show or not, chances are you knew who the titular characters actor was. Nick never did that.we learned more about Josh peck and Drake bell I’m the last 3 years (unfortunately we hate everything we’ve learned about them both) than we knew about them their entire Nick careers. Somehow Nick even managed to make Jamie Lynn who we all knew of before her Nick days become zoey and Zoey alone to all of us.
Taina was actually a great show. The reason I think it unfortunately failed was actually because the cast was primarily POC, and it was still during a time where diverse casting in tween shows usually didn’t get any real marketing. Had they put the same effort in Taina that they gave Sleazy Schneider’s many redundant projects, it may have been bigger than Lizzie McGuire.
@Jasmine N. We had already been introduced to Raven Symone through The Cosby Show, so Raven was familiar to us who are around her age.
After only her first album, she definitely blew up all on her own and continued growing from there
Her family always supported her a lot, she was in Broadway before Nickelodeon, she's very talented and also rich

So many amazing shows with actual values while they may not have been factories for pop stars, that didn’t need to be their focus.
yes!

Miranda Cosgrove never really fit the popstar mold, and didn't have any exceptional singing talent. @Ms.C well now she’s way better. She did a cover of Shallow and it was pretty good

Or perhaps producers tried to pressure Miranda into completely changing her image Into a sex symbol and glitter like image like Ariana.
💯 I agree
Deadass, I remember all that. Ariana has work ethic.
Problem is a single from her second album: My Everything. The Way is the lead single from her debut album: Yours Truly.
i disagree with "while she never had to go under the same level of extreme scrutiny, public attention & maintaining that “good girl image”" but everything else i agree.
her lead single wasn't problem
I think its also worth noting that even though their shows, Unfabulous and True Jackson VP, didn't last long and weren't huge hits, Emma Roberts and Keke Palmer are now bigger stars than any of the Nickelodeon leads who actually had the hype machine pushing them.

Despite having success later than Miley, Selena & Demi, Ariana Grande was the first of the 4 to win a Grammy. Nickelodeon really fumbled the bag HARD
to be fair... the grammys gave ari that award to be petty and out of spite, since she didn't want to perform the setlist they wanted her to sing. they tore away her dream of getting her first grammy in person and being like the icons/legends she aspired to be. But she was also significantly more passionate about creating music.
ok
Yeah same. I also think it would have been better if Victoria focused on acting from the beginning.

My points:
The problem with Victoria Justice's music: it was always to basic and boring and it never evolved and Columbia barely promoted her.

All of them were. According to their different voices, acting and song writing.

I think that for shows that try to push a musical act they typically have one performer, but Victorious had a lot and the biggest hits were never just Victoria's, Freak the Freak Out was huge, but so was Take a Hint, Give it Up and Song 2 U. 🤷🏻♀️

nickelodeon was focusing so much on victoria justice when characters like andre and jade had sooo much potential, and we don't even talk about ariana grande. they really missed out
I really loved Big Time Rush. Like in college listening to them all the time
That Rugrats soundtrack went HARD. Rakim; Busta Rhymes, Mase, Black Street, No Doubt, quite a line up for a kids show soundtrack.
Ariana Grande is the queen of streams and the 2010s w/o a doubt. I'm so glad u talked bout her, she is a massive success story.
Yeah because of small kids lol
@@nevermindgaming6848 ariana is fire tho
@@nevermindgaming6848 teens?, young adults?, even some adults are fans
@@nevermindgaming6848 her songs talk abt s3x wdym "small kids"
Not 2010s as a whole. Maybe 2014-2019.
I find it cool that Alex Wolff managed to make a successful transition into the horror genre, I can see him eventually developing into one of those horror actors that you immediately recognize whenever he shows up in in a horror film
honestly him and his brother Nat have become quite varied and successful actors while balancing music on the side. They've become one of the most impressive child star come ups
Disney used to have their stars in their commercials or have sneak peaks of their music acts. I remember on Disney they'll play a music video between tv shows and tell you the album is now available. Never recall Nick doing that at all.
Taina was the blueprint for the actress to music star pipeline. Sadly people only remember Lizzie McGuire.
I mean nobody from taina really Had a decent music career. Even Christina only released like four songs. Hilary had a pretty notable music Career even though she’s not much of a singer. Hilary duff walked so selena Gomez could run tbh
Once Disney realized hilary herself was marketable, all they had to do was slap her on everything. Suite life, thats so Raven, wizards, sunny with a chance, Phil of the future, shake it up. We were made to feel like we knew the actors.
@@musiclover_kb4913 sorry that’s a lot. It ended up being more than I realized when I posted it
Was she really the blueprint if it didn’t work?
Taina was actually a great show.
The reason I think it unfortunately failed was actually because the cast was primarily POC, and it was still during a time where diverse casting in tween shows usually didn’t get any real marketing.
Had they put the same effort in Taina that they gave Sleazy Schneider’s many redundant projects, it may have been bigger than Lizzie McGuire.
this
I agree. Tania was a great show!
Bro I’ve never heard of that show at all lol but then again I was like 3 years old in 2001
I was just about to comment thisssssssss ~
@Jasmine N. We had already been introduced to Raven Symone through The Cosby Show, so Raven was familiar to us who are around her age.
Not only that, but That’s So Raven was Disney Channel and Disney had just come under fire at the time for trying to whitewash Lalaine (Miranda from Lizzie McGuire). Of course they didn’t want to have too big a reputation stain as racists in a growing politically correct climate.
Elizabeth Gillies is such a good music artist. I respect all of them for doing what they could.
Love dysnasty my favourite show
