Tecovas Zip Boots

  • Tecovas boots are blurring the line between affordability and quality. They compete at a price which few other can match, and with some of their new offerings like the American Alligator series they also offer a higher end boot for more discerning customers. But for me their limited run of zipper boots were especially intriguing, aimed at people with a high instep like myself who typically have a hard time wearing laceless boots. These boots solve another issue which is their wearability with slim cut pants, a problem that has plagued those who enjoy tall laceless boots until now. I have to admire Tecovas drive to solve the problems of their customer and continue their strategy to make western wear accessible to everyone.

First TH-cam review of these Tecovas zip boots I've seen. Finally. Thanks for that.
Mid-Atlantic yankee city slicker, here, but I've always been a fan of western style clothing and culture. Decided to finally bite the bullet with these (the Dean, the brown calf skin ones), instead of the more traditionally styled Tecovas Cartwright boots, which have the taller angled heel, shaft ribbing, and vamp stitching. There just aren't enough opportunities for me to wear traditional cowboy boots like that in my city without looking odd (I am a country music fan though, and go to concerts pretty frequently - but that's literally the only place I see people wearing cowboy boots around here).
The Deans seemed like the right choice. They don't have any decorative stitching on the vamp, which give the boots a clean minimal style (which I like), but maintain the classic toe and a slightly angled heel of a traditional western boot (which I do like, I don't like the shorter straighter roper heel). I also like the slimmer shaft, because I do wear slimmer jeans. Yeah, southerners or Texans might consider them sacrilegious (fine, I get it), but they're pretty versatile, can be dressed up or down easily, and they look like most any other western boot from a distance (the zipper isn't totally obvious, unless you're staring at them up close, and my jeans cover the shaft entirely). I think they'll look even better, worn in over time. Not a lot of wear this summer so far (the heat!), but I'll probably get more use out of them in the fall. I do still secretly still want a pair of the more traditional looking non-zip Cartwright boots though. Maybe in a couple years.

I think it’s a neat hybrid. Definitely a boot I’d wear to look nicer, I own cowboy boots and I wear them all the time, but I feel like this would be a nice style change when I want to go for a different vibe

  • @JeremiahCraig
    @JeremiahCraig 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Good overview. I'm not a fan of zip western style boots for guys. For me, the zip creates a tighter fit, which is fine for some but I like the airflow that a cowboy boot allows and the wider shaft creates room for air to move. That combined with the regular heel slip in a cowboy boot allows for my foot to stay cooler and so the boots never stink. Their other boots are more my style.

These make sense to me if you wear them in semi dress attire a lot. Slim jeans/khakis or slacks. Then you don’t get the shaft pushing out like you mentioned. Almost looks like a dress shoe/boot with your pants over it. I’m looking at the exact two you reviewed lol

I've watched Carl's vids before purchasing my first cowboy boots and my Thursdays. I now own 3 boots; all ropers since I'm not a cowboy and I wear regular jeans.
I have a zip-up boot in leather (cow hide), a Chelsea in suede, and a roper cowboy boot in caiman leather. All by Tecovas.
By far, the easiest to put on and take off is the zip-up boot, the worst is the caiman roper.
They are all super comfortable, I can go all day in them with no problems. They all required minimal breaking in. True, they are not working boots, they are city boots (dress boots?) But that's exactly why I bought them. I've worn them with jeans on my motorcycle, and with suits in business meetings. They look gorgeous and elevate my style every time. As you said, "a good looking boot is a good looking boot".
I highly recommend these boots in particular and Tecovas boots in general. And if you feel that they look like "chick boots", then don't buy them. You don't need another thing chipping away at your obviously frail ego.

Got the Dean in brown. The Roy was out of stock. I have several pair of Tony Lamas and Justin. Over the years, age and a few injuries made my cowboy boots painful and uncomfortable. I have some zipper desert boots, but they are not the same as a western boot. I was considering a Chelsea boot when I started seeing Tecovas. I like the low cut taper shaft and zipper. It is very comfortable. I am just looking for a boot that is comfortable. No drugstore cowboy here.

I recently bought the Roy in Honey Suede and by themselves l can see the height of the heel and narrow toe, the silhouette may look to some like a woman's boot but if you can picture them with a higher shaft they would look like a normal cowboy boot. I think its not being used to looking at a boot with a lower shaft that throws some off.
My wife loves these boots on me and l wear them with slim fit Wrangler boot cut jeans.

I have a pair of the Dean boots I love them they were my first pair of Tecovas. I just received my second pair Tecovas boots called the Nolan and I had the same problem with the high arch when I contacted the Tecovas company regarding this problem they offered a few suggestions and also to their credit said I could return these boots as many times as I needed to until I was satisfied how can you beat that for customer satisfaction. Now concerning the high arch problem I usually wear a boot sock when wearing boots so instead in this case I switched to a lighter dress sock still a little tight getting out of the boot but very doable.

First of all, I just ordered a pair of the black Earl boots, and am looking forward to them. Secondly, I bought a pair of Italian boots some 18 years ago that have a similar design as the Dean with a zipper. I love them. They're still in great shape. So I'll have two pairs of quality boots in about a week. Thirdly, my high arch always gave me a problem with all the other cowboy boots I owned throughout my life. My hope is the Tecovas Earls, will be a great compromise for me and my feet. If not, I'll trade them for the Deans.

*IMHO Regarding appearance* There's a time and place for zipper boots, I would put them in the fashion category rather than the utility category of traditional ropers or cowboys with the Cuban heel. With that said, Tecovas zipper boots look very modern. Tecovas zipper boots look like high quality and durable Chelsea boot. Example from experience - the daily wearing of a Calvin Klein 100% genuine leather boot that retails at $200 will start to wear and within 1.5 years they will look pretty bad due to how thin the leather is. Tecovas zipper I would guess will last a lifetime with proper care.

I have some Tecovas suede ropers and I love the look and quality, but it's a bad choice for guys with a low profile foot like mine. The heel area is way too big and the back of my foot flops around, instead of being held in place in the heel cup like a Western boot is supposed to. If it wasn't for this (major) fit issue, these would be great. And no, sizing down isn't an option, my foot's too long.

As an aside, you should send the link of your video on "making money on TH-cam" to Brock the Modest Man. He's got expectations that may not be realistic and now he is putting his own ads in his videos. That really degrades him in my opinion. The best is that his ad was for hair restoration in a video about how he is growing his hair long. Duh?

    • @CarlMurawski

I’ve actually been wearing the suede more than any other boot lately, it just works so well for the summer. The zippers are YKK and should work for a long time, but I’ve considered putting some leather pull tabs on them.
As far as Brock, I’m friendly with him and have been on his podcast. I know just what you mean with his ads, and it’s a tough spot to be in. Once you decide to go full time with this, most sources of revenue deserve to be explored. It’s easy for me to say that I’ll never do an ad because my channel is small and I have a regular day job. But unfortunately when you’re full time you have less freedom. I think there is a way to go about it properly but that’s up to the creator themselves. I never liked watching ads either, especially when they’re not easy to detect in a video.

Are you in the market for a good pull-on boot? I’m working with Nicks on developing one for work and hunting applications.

Coming from a texan, these boots are just sacrilegious. But I can see how if some yankee is trying to ease their way into wearing boots this may be help them.

Exactly. Up here in the Northeast cowboy boots aren't very popular. If you wear them people assume you're from another state or just a huge country music fan. These are a good compromise for us yanks. Though I much prefer the politics of Texas!

Funny, I’m from Texas and don’t have a problem with the zipper. Nice being able to wear boots with a pair of chinos or slacks to work, or non-boot cut jeans.

While I completely understand the practicality of having a zipper on the side of your boots, I would never boots that did. Also, cowboy boots are not my thing either, but that is more of just a style thing and culture thing, not a quality perception thing.

Too all those that call the Tecovah side zip chick boots. How f*cking old are you. 50 + plus years of playing drums, congestive heart failure, edema, copd, etc. But I still want to wear a good boot. I forgot neuropathy. Be kind. The zipper is a function. ...And I'm truly a pacifist. But if a couple here would have complimented me on my 14D chick boots in 1972 , I'd have complimented you on how well your azz looks as a hat...Peace.

These are Definitely a boot for Americans, i mean no disrespect with this comment, but this style is not as popular in the UK. Well not with my demographic. Love Redwings etc, just not to keen on this type though.

I’ve got the same pair and they HURT my feet, pinch my toes, I cannot wear them for a full day. Past the return date and they’re scuffed on her bottom. Will they take them back? Probably not. I could get a pair of made in USA/Canada boots for $240 of which have a comfort sole. I want my $250 back Tecovas 🤷🏻‍♂️.

To each their own. I dig the variety going from my 10” safety toe Nicks work boots to a sleek boot after work. You do you man!

@@CarlMurawski my newest boot is the Taft Rome in Oxblood so I have nothing against a sleek profile. Chelsea boots just remind me of my grandmother's horse riding boots from when I was little, so I've always thought of them as women's boots

Nobody at the leather bar will mind the zipper on those imported mail order boots sold by a marketing company that doesn't have a factory!

If you want western boots go to a western wear store and pick them out. These look like what a Yankee thinks cowboy boots should look like. They scream “rookie poser!”
Like the saying goes, if you know then you know.
