    Not a bad video for a Yankee 😉
    Here's the difference between cowboy and roper style boots from a native Texan.
    Cowboy boots = better for horse work, roper boots = better for walking around
    Cowboy boots has a higher heel so it stays in stirrups better, also may have a taller shaft to help protect from brush when riding.
    Roper boots are more meant for walking/ working so the higher heel isn't needed.

    • @CarlMurawski
      @CarlMurawski  6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Thank you for the clarification! That makes a lot of sense, and you schooled this Yankee!

    • @MikeBixby
      @MikeBixby 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      stays in the stirrups better ....well yes. but the smooth forefoot sole is so you more easily kick out out of the stirrups and from the horse in case you need . The cut away / tapered heel is called a "riding heel" the nook of that slant is what’s going to help keep the boot in a stirrup. This type of heel is known as an underslung heel. And because there’s no relatively sharp, 90-degree angle at the back of the heel, it’s gentler on the horse since there’s less friction and thus discomfort. also accommodates different types of spur rowels

    • @taylorelsner6332
      @taylorelsner6332 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Mistero Gee I think anyone that’s familiar with ranching, horse and cattle work would know the difference.

    • @MikeBixby
      @MikeBixby 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@taylorelsner6332 Absolutely. I ranched for 35 years. Boots are a necessity. The RIGHT boots for the right task are also paramount.. Western riding work, trail, rope etc. 'mostly' dictates you ride "shallow in the stirrup" meaning you plant the balls of your feet (leather soles) on the stirrup with toes pointed forward. Again this allows you to dismount/kick free/ disengage yourself in case of horse stepping in hole or getting startled and bucking (any number of mishaps). Western Cutting horse riding is a wider legs, feet deep in the stirrup with toes pointing out. We never allowed guest to ride in any type of rubber soled shoe. My wife will add the smooth soles are better on the dance floor as well. Everything on a real cowboys attire is based in function. Hat for sun and rain protect and collecting water. Bandana for MANY uses tourniquet, washrag, dust mask etc. leather chaps for brush & thorn protection and so on.

    • @taylorelsner6332

    Hey Carl, as a fellow guy from CT that loves cowboy boots and quality shoes in general, thanks for the great review. I am going to order a pair in the roper style.
    One really great features that you pointed out is the fact these boots are constructed with a cork foot bed, a feature found in higher quality footwear. This sets them apart from even some of the more expensive, better known cowboy boot brands out there.

    Great review. Ostrich is a wonderful material for footwear as it’s super soft and yet incredibly hard wearing. I have a pair of hand made cowboy boots made in the US in 1985, the ostrich skin still looks brand new to this day. I’m very tempted by their deep brown alligator boots, incredible price for that skin.

    I agree that retail will die, but probably the last thing 'bout it that will die are actually shoe and clothing shops, specially the expensive formal kind. Many people I know still in 2018 don't buy shoes online because they refuse to take the risk of getting an ill fitted shoe and fear not being able to return it (although many shops offer pretty much everything you need). It doesn't matter how good the online process is, nothing will beat trying side by side a few options and sizes on the store (and some are willing to pay extra for that service).

    • @CarlMurawski

      What I would prefer really is a small retailer without storage (so they can offer cheaper prices) with only the essentials to try on the garments/shoes sizing/cut/lasts, personalized attention with a database and then they send me stuff on the sizing I tried and know (something like a mix between a tailor and overseas made clothing). However I don't that's how the future will be like because the people keeping the retails alive are the old fashioned "I want to touch, check and try the exact item I want to buy and only then I will hand you my money".

      Gotta catch that lip above the stacked leather.

      Very very back edge of the best spot.

    Love how you talk about not wearing cowboy boots with shorts at least as when about men. I almost on the floor when I see grown men in shorts with boots. I want to scream out what a Hoosier. No malicious intent to residents of Indiana. Very informative and great looking boots.

    Maybe I missed it in the comments but what you need is a boot jack. They’re made to get your boots off easily without damaging the boot. You don’t want to be using the front side of one boot against the heel of the other boot to get them off.

    My issue with most footwear when trying a brand for the first time is sizing. I have worn everything from a 10-4W to a 13.5 but I usually settle on 11.5 because it's the most comfortable without being snug. I don't like it when shoes fit snugly because having to retie the laces every time you want to put them on or take them off is a hassle. I have to say I'm impressed with the quality considering the price is well below what you'd be paying for White's or Nicks.

    So just bought a pair. Well…. Technically I bought five pair.
    First pair the top stitching on one was shifted drastically to the side. It was very obvious. I wasn’t just being picky.
    Second pair the sole looked twisted to the right so the toe of the sole had this weird point that didn’t line up with the leather toe shape.
    The third pair had a significantly tighter… turn(?)… when trying to push yer foot into them. To the point I was huffing and puffing and finally gave up trying to get my foot into it.
    The fourth pair had something bulging up under the heel on the right boots inside.
    The fifth pair had damaged leather like someone else had tried them on and rammed them into a curb to get them off their foot or something. But it was as good as I was apparently going to get. And I figure I got them to have them beaten up and worn in looking, so it was just going to have to be fine with me. I’ve had them a few weeks now and loving them. The hassle of getting them was outrageous. I can’t say I’d rec them to anyone after my experience. Well, if you can afford to buy like five or ten pair at once, pick out the best left and right boot, then return the rest… go for it ! Lol. But I wanted a roughed up looking boot. With a leather sole and a simple design without some crazy color.
    Good luck!
    Oh also, I usually wear wide toe box shoes, and just going for a wide in the size they recommended worked out perfectly for me! So if you need a wide row box, they could work out for you!

      Well I don’t know what a true cowboy buts their boots through, but I can tell you that I wouldn’t work in these. My world is much different, and I like a robust work boot for actual work. These are built nicely and have been great but I’d hesitate to use them for real work.

    Tecovas seem to be a really nice boot! My only wish is that they would offer an actual riding heel as an option. Seems to only have short walking heels. Even their "cowboy boot" heel while it is angled like a riding heel ,it's a much shorter version in my opinion 🤔.

    I loved the boot from the time I put it on, problem is if it was a real western boot, it would not break down after only 4 months. I work construction and on my ranch, the boots I got have been used primarily on the ranch. I still love the way they feel but need improvement on heel stability and the soles wears down too fast for the price. I am a USA buyer, we'll primarily don't buy China made. Mexico is a neighbor just as Canada and would rather buy from them if can't get USA.

    I debated between a pair of ranch road roper style boots and a pair of tecovas roper boots because of the similarity of style and construction. I went with the ranch road boot solely based on the semi synthetic inlaid sole (pun intended), and was kinda disappointing with what I got for what what I payed. The color didn't look as good in person the leather wasn't as soft as i hoped for and there was a stiff ridge in the vamp because of a seam in the middle. After wearing them every day for work for a month they have broken in fairly nicely but I think next time ill try the tecovas. also a simple explanation for cowboy vs roper is the business man in Dallas wears roper boots and the cowboy in Fort Worth wears the cowboys boots.

    Hey Carl! Great video!
    I have question. I was thinking of buying the Thursday Duke in exactly the same colour as the one that you did, but since you said they weren’t all that good in the long run, so should I buy these Tecovas instead? Are these better made than the Thursday’s Duke comparatively?

    • @CarlMurawski
      @CarlMurawski  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question! I’m really disappointed in my Duke chelsea boots, mostly because the insole is pretty much useless and it feels like I’m standing on concrete. This is due to the Poron EVA which is basically just thin foam which looses its cushion quickly.
      I do feel that you’re getting more for your money with Tecovas, especially in the comfort department since they use a leather insole which just becomes better with use.
      They’re very different boots, but if I had to pick one it would be Tecovas.

    I ordered a pair of Ostrich boots but they did not fit me well and were too tight on my feet.
    I did not know that I was used to wearing work boots that fit like a comfortable hiking shoe.
    So I received a pair of cowboy boots and I felt like I was wearing high heels.
    Not comfortable. After watching videos about boot sizing I realize that the throat on my boots are too tight and it makes putting them on and taking them off a torturous ordeal.
