    I honestly don’t think you have to wait a week that’s just me everyone has there own way of doing I’ve painting many other things and havnt had to wait for a week a day or less sometimes but it’s how ever you choose to do it nice video👍

      Yeah every paint is different. I was going by what this particular paint suggested on the can. You could easily get away with less. Although by one week you would expect it to be very hardend. Hand oils can be really tough on paint.

    I know this video is pretty old so you may not see this, but can you paint the back without losing grip because the back and front plastic is different?

    • @TheGeekZone
      @TheGeekZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends on the finish you go with. You can actually get a rubber based paint that would actually increase grip. But if you were going to use a standard paint the trick would be to thinly apply a coat of paint on the back as to not fill the grooves of the back plate.

  • @brekkoh

    great! although ive never seen any non oil based paint product that recommends a full week for dry time.

  • @johndaltrocanto

    I don’t usually sand the controllers I paint, i just use a good primer (gray or clear) and then i finish it off with liquitex acrylic spray paint which gives the controller a very nice matte-ish texture, plus being an high quality spray paint it’s very durable and has a great tone to it, if the customer wants a glossy finish I will layer some clear coating, but the liquitex finish is so great people usually just don’t want the clear coat. I know it kinda sounds like advertising but it is a really good product and I wish they paid me for saying this

    Amazing video brother just did mine and it could not look better

  • @fnarvii1810
    @fnarvii1810 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wouldn't use acetone because it dissolves many plastics. Notice how when you wiped it down, it became shiny again and you needed to sand again. That's because you basically took out the original scratches you made with the acetone. Isopropyl alcohol is plenty and won't screw things up. Acetone vapor is actually used to smooth out 3D printed models because it is such a powerful solvent.

    • @TheGeekZone
      @TheGeekZone  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Geirlodnir It didn't remove any of the scratches but just created a film that covered them up temporarily. I agree that it's a very strong solvent and probably more than enough for the job but I wouldn't say that it can hurt anything in this scenario.

    THIS is amazing! So going to try this!!!

  • @Nate3417
    @Nate3417 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very good, in-depth tutorial! All I'm doing is switching the front face between an all black and all white controller, so it shouldn't be too hard. I'll comment again later to say how it went! I was thinking of doing the same thing with a Wii U Pro controller, but the white ones are like $120(CAD) online so I may actually have to refer back to this tutorial and spray paint it!

    • @Nate3417
      @Nate3417 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Why is this so hard to unscrew?" Probably because I'm screwing it clockwise.
      After I got past that moment of genius and got the back off (which makes a terrifying "oh god I broke it" sound), it was just as easy as replacing the backs for the most part. I was so worried I lost one of the springs for the L2/R2 triggers, but I found it! It took me a while to figure out that the loop on the spring went around the axle. One of the sticky tabs for the new controller just... wasn't there, but I'm sure that's fine. Lastly, on the secondary controller (which I took apart first in case I made a mistake), I pulled a little too hard taking it apart and the left side of the front came loose. I just had to remove the battery and jostle it back into place. In all, it went well and didn't take too long. I'll try out the controllers fully later, but they seem to be in great condition. Thanks for the tutorial! I'll Tweet you the finished product tomorrow.

    • @TheGeekZone
      @TheGeekZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You mean on top of the paint? I guess so but make sure they are high quality. I have found not all permanent markers are equal. Also I would 100% use a sealant if you do that. Check my other video where I hydrodip a PS4 controller. I use a sealant on that one to lock in the colour. Works out really good.

      +ThePapadumGeek Yeah I was going to next level it and then add a layer of pearl over the top but I just wanted to get the video done as it was it was over a week long project to finish. I want to end up with 4 controllers (currently have two) for parties and group hangs etc. The plan is to paint all of them so they can all be identified easily. Which means I still have three controllers to paint. I want to also do a metallic one. Not a chrome but like a genuine metallic flek type paint.

    Nice video very informative. I liked the color you choose and it matches some sneakers my nephew has and because if this he asked if I could paint his controller. My question is how long did this paint last on the controller, especially for "for a sweaty" playing call of duty like my nephew, I love him but ya know it's the truth. Lol Would adding multiple coats allow for extra protection and also would you advise on allowing 24 hours between coats and when done allow up to a week to dry? Thanks and you got a new sub right here.

    • @TheGeekZone
      @TheGeekZone  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am still using mine with very little wear at all. As for the coats and dry time yeah 24 hours between coats and 1 week to dry. Any more coats and you'll most likely cause it to wear quicker. As the old saying goes "less is more". P.S thanks for the sub, glad you have you around.

    • @TheGeekZone
      @TheGeekZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you will have this issue. The only reason the original controllers won't have this issue is because the colour is in the plastic. Anything you paint that grinds will eventually get wear like that. You tougher paints like enamels and do multiple coats in order to prolong the effect.

    • @TheGeekZone
      @TheGeekZone  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Everything that I do is about achieving the maximum quality of the end result. Sanding creates a porous surface which helps the paint stick better. The primer also helps with this, you can choose to leave out these steps but you might find that within 6 months you are having to do the whole thing again.

    Is it necessary to sand the shell? I have the paint with me but no sandpaper and I was just thinking about just painting it.

    • @TheGeekZone
      @TheGeekZone  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sevi Gonzalez I'd say the sanding is pretty important as a porous surface is kinda essential for getting the paint to stick. What will tend to happen if you paint straight on to a smooth surface is that the paint will most likely peel off down the road. This will be doubly so if it's a controller that has been used and has a surface coated in hand oils also. It's fairly cheap and readily available at any hardware store. Do yourself a favour and just wait to get some sandpaper.

    Did you use a clear coat and is it necessary?

    • @TheGeekZone
      @TheGeekZone  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Akshpreet Hayer I didn't use a clear coat because the paint I used is very durable and can withstand the wear and tear it's likely to receive under normal use. Can you use clear coat to give it that little extra protection with the added bonus of being able to select the final sheen. With clear coat you can pick something from very matte through to very shiny to get the desired look you are going for. Personally I like a semi-gloss as it starts to look a bit cheap when it's really glossy or shiny and a matte finish can also look nice but really is colour dependant. I hope that helps you out a bit?

  • @hidigidy

      The spray will give a nicer finish because of the layers. When you dip you can't layer it meaning you don't have the hold or the even finish.

    I've been seeing a lot of use of acetone while painting new controllers. I paint controllers and have never used it. Whats the benefit of using it?

    • @TheGeekZone
      @TheGeekZone  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's really only necessary if you have used the controller before. it's mainly to get hand oils and grease off. if you painted it straight out of the box it would probably be fine but I'd still recommend you use a primer.

    • @lanceshuler1487
      @lanceshuler1487 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      huh, interesting. When I painted GC controllers I just used water and a paintbrush to clean them, along with sand paper. I did use primer, but only with paint that needed it (eg paint that comes with primer in it)

    • @TheGeekZone
      @TheGeekZone  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lance Shuler All paints should really need a primer just some come in a 2in1 like the one I used. however it might take a long time to see the benefit of that like greater than a year. if you're really vigilant with the brush and soapy water then sure that will probably work too. Generally the rubbing alcohol will just make your life easier. It's like the saying about the right tool for the right job ya know. I'd love to see some of your work. You should post and tag me on twitter.

    • @TheGeekZone
      @TheGeekZone  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the areas where the newspaper is stuck I would go back to sanding and using rubbing alcohol to removed any of the attached stuff and ruined paint. Then just go over that section again with the paint and primer smoothly spraying on to blend in with the rest of the controller.

    • @TheGeekZone
      @TheGeekZone  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same thing happened to me the first time I opened my controller as well. Try losening off the two screws either side of the touch pad just slightly and see if that improves things for you?

    • @bobbajosmith9851
      @bobbajosmith9851 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I had to take off the back and press down the motherboard so all the buttons get in place. Be careful when prying off the the case as the triggers can snap off, they click back into place and work as long as the gel button is also wrapped over the plastic (if you get this problem you will understand). Works perfectly now and looks great! Also I would advise a couple coats of primer / white spray paint before you pick your colour.

    • @TheGeekZone
      @TheGeekZone  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I used a paint plus primer in one so it wasn't essential for me but yes a primer is usually required for stuff like that.

  • @Twisted_Biscuit

    Why was acetone used? All that does is melt the plastic and the sanding scratches. Wouldn't you rather just use alcohol to clean it instead of remove the scratches? I use acetone after 3D printing plastic parts to melt the rough surfaces into glossy surfaces.

    • @TheGeekZone
      @TheGeekZone  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like the paint did not dry properly or too much was applied. I'd sand it back again and use more rubbing alcohol to get as much off as possible. Then paint it again but really lightly just enough to cover the surface. Let it dry for like 24 hours and then do the same thing again. Depending on your climate, if it's quite cold you'll need to wait longer in between coats and even maybe just have some warm air blowing on it from a good distance.
