How to Paint a PS4 Controller (1st and 2nd Generations)

  • Hi everyone, I made this video a while back waiting for a good time to post it. This tutorial is for the 1st generation and 2nd generation controllers.
    The first step of the painting process is disassembly. There are 4 screws on the back of the controller that can be removed with a Philips head screwdriver. After removing them, gently squeeze the sides of the controller as you pry the back piece away from the front piece. Don’t pull too hard though, as there is a ribbon cable connecting the light bar to the motherboard. After removing the ribbon cable, locate the second ribbon cable that connects the touch pad to the motherboard, and disconnect it. Remove the screw holding the motherboard to the front shell, and then take out all of the buttons.
    Before painting, make sure to sand all surfaces that will be receiving paint with a fine grit sandpaper (recommended: 220 grit). Prime the surfaces with a plastic primer, and then inspect for bubbles or imperfections (sand them away if you're not satisfied). After the primer has dried, apply the color coats, making sure to follow the directions specified on the back of the paint can. Again, inspect the controller for imperfections, and sand them down if needed. If you sanded anything, be sure to recoat that area with the color paint. Once the paint has dried, use a clear coat that matches the finish of the paint that you used.
    Finally, LET THE CONTROLLER DRY FOR 3 DAYS OR MORE, and then reassemble the controller. If you don’t let the controller dry completely, it will be much more likely to get scratched or smudged during the assembly process.
    I hope that this tutorial was able to help anyone that desires more out of their boring PS4 controller. Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoyed :)
    Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any damages done to your controller, do this at your own risk.

      It's really not as hard as it might seem, just be patient and make sure to reccont the two ribbon cables correctly and plug the battery in. If you're having trouble remembering which way the cables go in, use a flashlight to inspect the port and look for the shiny pins that make contact with the shiny side of the ribbon. Once everything is reinstalled, before pressing the controller shells back together, go ahead and try turning the controller on. If the controller turns on and the light on the controller turns on, then you're golden and you can reinstall the screws. Hope this helps, if you have any more questions feel free to ask 😁👌🏻

    I’m trying to decide if making a custom controller would be less or more expensive than just buying a new controller in the berry blue color...you make it look really easy but I’m not sure if buying the primer, paint, finishing spray and sandpaper(s) costs more or not

    • @labellesworkshop
      @labellesworkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It would cost more to buy a new controller and all the supplies to paint it than it would be to buy the berry blue controller. This project isn’t too difficult, it just requires some time and patience to get the outcome you’re looking for. If you want to make a custom controller that’s unlike what anyone else has though, it can be worth it 👌🏻

    • @labellesworkshop
      @labellesworkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tony Amit as long as you prepare your controller before painting (sanding the surface, cleaning it with soapy water). It is also important to finish your controller with the clear coats of paint because it adds another layer of protection. Some parts of the paint job can start to wear away after using it for long enough though (and your English was right)

    • @labellesworkshop
      @labellesworkshop  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Make sure you use good spray paint if you don’t want it to rub off on your hands. Before you paint it, you need to sand the plastic with 220 grit sandpaper and then put on gloves and wash the controller with soapy water so the paint can stick better. Finally, use a good quality clear spray paint so it will get stronger. There's a lot more information in my video description of this video 👍🏻👌🏻

      The touch pad still works perfectly for pressing in (map in fortnite, stats in cod) and works decently for the swipe motions, but not perfectly. Swiping to type things acts a little funky sometimes, but so long as you don’t put too many layers on it then everything should be fine. Hope this answers your question

      yea I sanded the back of the controller too, just not as hard. Since there is texture, there's probably grim already caked in there (which might stop the paint from sticking). Thats why I recommend washing the controller with dish soap after you finish sanding it before painting

      I haven't had to re-coat with clear on my controllers since I let the paint dry and cure completely before using the controllers. I have the worst luck with this. Every time I paint no matter how clean the area is when I paint black specks and black strands of hair like stuff always manage to get on the paint even if I cover it with like a salad tossing bowl that I know has jjust been cleaned and shouldn't have anything like that on it.

      Do you sand it before painting? And do you use primer after cleaning it? Last question, where do you paint? (On the ground inside, on the ground outside, elevated inside, etc)

    • @AnarickTheDevil
      @AnarickTheDevil 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@labellesworkshop Sanded, washed and scrubbed to make sure nothing is left on it. The paint I have is a paint and primer in one.
      I bought a little folding table that I take outside an cover with a plastic bag and place down some paper towels.

    Hi. Can anyone pls tell me the need of the sanding and the primer done in this process as i am new to this. Would help a lot.Thanks

    • @labellesworkshop
      @labellesworkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Short answer: Paint adhesion
      Long answer: Paint won’t stick well to the regular plastic so the sandpaper takes the original finish off the plastic and then primer helps the paint bond better and more consistently

    Great now my buttons are jammed because of the paint

    • @labellesworkshop
      @labellesworkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can take a small piece of sandpaper and roll it into a cylinder (the size of your buttons) and then carefully sand away the sand inside the button holes. You can also sand the paint away from the sides of the buttons by wrapping sandpaper around the base of the button and twisting gently. Just be sure to not scuff up any of the top areas that you already painted

    how long should I wait for the paint to dry intill I do the clear coat

    • @labellesworkshop
      @labellesworkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should say how long on the back of the can in the directions, some recommend to clear coat before the paint is completely dry while other recommend to wait an hour or two after final paint coat

    is it safe to paint the touchpad?

    • @labellesworkshop
      @labellesworkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can make features like swipe to type not work too well, just make sure to do light coats and it shouldn’t be a problem

    Can you use peelable auto paint for this

    • @labellesworkshop
      @labellesworkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think it would last as long as traditional spray paint due to your hands rubbing against it constantly. Also, plastidip (peelable paint) applies much thicker so it would probably lead to issues with the buttons sticking and not popping back into place
