Just before that one person says it… NO I don’t literally mean … no one is buying Avon.. it’s a figure of speech… like “no one wears skinny jeans anymore” doesn’t mean literally no one wears skinny jeans… 👍🏼
Perfect example but it actually annoys me a little that this has to be explained... Why don't people understand the concept of hyperbole using absolute statements when most of us use it all the time? (I literally just did.... and it wasn't intentional... 😭)
I am a 68 year old black woman who remembers my mother and her friends buying Avon products when I was a child. In those days the United States was still segregated and black people were often not treated well at makeup counters in stores. Avon had advertisements in black magazines so a lot of black women sold Avon. Avon was one of the first makeup brands that used black models in their advertisements. My mom and her friends loved the fragrances because they came in beautiful containers. Avon was considered a company that catered to the black consumer at a time when few companies wanted our business. Once the United States became integrated and other makeup brands started courting the black consumer, Avon began to not be as popular. I still like Skin So Soft products but I rarely purchase other Avon products. My mom and the generation that purchased Avon products are now all dead. I know few people my age who use Avon products.
That was a fascinating piece of history. Thanks for sharing. I had no idea but of course it makes sense. We grew up in a non English speaking community and purchasing Avon from each other was far more pleasant than trying to go to the local department stores and deal with the attitudes there. Yes now that you mention it I remember that too
Iirc a huge part of the success of the Sears catalogue was also due to Black people being able to shop from it without the harassment they experienced in stores.
I’m so sorry this happened to you all. It makes me angry. Sometimes I wonder if some of the mentally of people in the USA are still segregated in their minds. So much hatred it is sad 😢
I feel like if avon just abandoned the mlm nonsense and hired it's best sellers back as genuine pr/sales people they'd make a comeback, people want to like them because of the nostalgia and history
I buy AVON products online. They're good for the price, the basic stuff like bath products are actually some of my favourites and I do choose them when I can. I would buy them more if they were available in shops. But I don't dip into their "higher-end" stuff. They do nice scents and they're just a decent brand overall imo.
Exactly this!! My mom has been doing AVON for over 40 years (I’ll be 40 in Feb). She doesn’t mess with the MLM part, and never has. She used to make President’s Club before they went to the MLM model in 2005, and I know she would much prefer it to go back to the way it was.
Avon is owned by LG. They hardly sell any Avon products. They sell products from other companies and the prices are not what Avon was known for. In the US, anyway.
I honestly miss catalogs. I used to look through them a lot as a kid. They were a lot more fun to look through compared to looking through a websites inventory.
I loved it too. That’s actually such a strangely nice childhood memory that I hadn’t thought of haha. The perfume samples reminder also really brought it back for me 😂
Oh man already 30 seconds in and I wanna cry. My grandma was one of avon's top accountants and when she retired her replacement wasn't up to par and they begged her to come back. She always bought us stuff from the catalog and she has quite a few completed collections. She just passed away on Christmas Eve and her avon pension supported up until death. Edited to add I miss their giant sign off the 210.
She was an employee. She didn't sell. I was also. My pension will start at 65. They were a great company to be an employee of. Unfortunately, the Avon ladies who were selling got screwed. Though I always knew a few who made $30k a month because they had a large downline of sellers
An Avon lady saved my life once! We lived in Winnipeg when I was little and my way home from school included crossing a big empty field. That year we’d had about a metre of snow and it had a thick crust so I could just walk across the top. But within a stone’s throw of the plowed sidewalk I fell through and was trapped. For half an hour no one passed and I thought I would die. An Avon lady walking her rounds heard me calling for help and rescued me and my Mom became her best customer after that.
I bet lots of us got our first "grown up lippie" that way! I used to pour over the catalog & to this day, a bullet lipstick means " I am a grown, independent woman" to me
Same. My mom had samples because she sold Avon for a short time and I was so obsessed over them. I was only 5 and I'm 47 now and still absolutely adore 💄 and all things makeup😍
My grandmother recently passed at age 92. I asked to keep all of her lipstcks- no intent on using them, they're just sentimental. Nearly all of them are from Avon. They still have really beautiful color to this day! It makes me a little sad that they have such sketchy business practices, because my grandma loved them so much.
I still have an old eyeshadow from my mother - i guess from the 70s or 80s. It is way better pigmented and more buttery than any new one i have. The consistency is more like a baked eyeshadow.
Avon used to have a captive audience. Neither of my grandmothers worked outside the home or had their own car to use. So the convenience of door-to-door sales was probably really great back then. Now, I'm hardly ever home. If Avon came calling, I'd have no idea. LOL
My memory with Avon is when i was living with my dads girlfriend for a while when I was 14 and she gave me one of the catalog books and I circled a whole bunch of stuff and forgot about it AND SHE GOT ALL OF IT and charged my dad and he was so pissed lmfao nothing had any prices listed from what I remember so I'm still not sute how much it came out to 😅
As a little girl I was always SO excited to get the latest Avon catalog and would beg my mother to order lip glosses and perfume sticks for me. I actually still wish I could get their Lilac perfume stick. It was aromatherapy for me and always made me feel better about life. And Skin So Soft saved me from having to spend an entire summer smelling like Deep Woods Off. And my neighbor, who's husband had badly abused her, was able to finally stand on her own two feet to raise her kids after her divorce by selling Avon. I'm grateful for Avon.
Look at your local flea market!! In our flea market they have an Avon Lady there and I still am able to get my favorites, perfume, skin so soft, bath oil etc. ❤❤❤
I remember sneaking the perfume roller n thinking it was fancy gloss. Omg my mouth was burning! I didnt get a whoopin cuz that was punishment enuf. Lol! But yea, the mini lipsticks and lip glosses for little girls. My mama is cherries jubilee n white/jovon musk. She wore nuthn else. 🙏🏽
I loved going through the catalogs when i was younger. And true story. My wedding ring for my first marriage was from an Avon catalog. We were 20 and broke, but it was so pretty and I loved it.
Aww that’s so sweet! I’m 22 and engaged and my engagement ring is a (relatively) cheap one from Pandora! I love a good deal on cheap, but gorgeous jewellery ☺️
I worked for the company. As an employee. Didn't sell. Their jewelry was fantastic. The earrings don't cause allergic reactions. The rest of the products mostly were not good. I still have rings and jewelry from them from over a decade ago. I'm sure your ring was beautiful
I'm 52. My first thoughts of Avon as a child were those teeny tiny lipstick samples. My mom had so many, I loved trying them on! My grandma had several beautiful collector perfume bottles that looked like dolls. She kept them after they were used and her room kept a lingering subtle scent of florals. Good memories, thanks Robert for asking that question.❤
As a former Avon lady, one of the other reasons the company isn’t doing well is the near constant changing of its CEOs. In less than 10 years it’s had 3-4 new CEO’s take over then leave. When it really went downhill is when the CEO of LG (yes the appliance one) took over and began offering an odd range of ‘new’ products, including brands you could find in Ulta & Sephora. I could go on and on about my experiences, and fond memories growing up with it since my mom (adopted by my grandparents for context) sold it through my childhood.
LG only owns parts of Avon (USA & CANADA). Natura owns the rest of them like Brazil and European branches. Avon Products, Inc. and New Avon LLC (US and Canada business) become two separate companies.
I've been selling Avon for 38 years and I totally agree with you. I've often had to agree with people saying Avon thinks it's 'Amway' now & the fact that our products can be found in stores, it's just not the same. And another thing, they bring new products out and they're discontinued by the time a customer has tried it and decided they like it. The quality of their costume jewelry has gone way down and their guarantee for Avon items is practically non-existent now. My Mom sold for years and there are items I still love in Avon, so I''m still selling for a while longer. Just hope Avon can figure out how to correct their problems before it's too late.
I just remember how Skin So Soft was marketed as this “natural” mosquito repellant. I swear to god, you’d walk into a cabin at summer camp and the whole room smelled like it. It would be sprayed on sleeping bags, clothes, selves, everything. 😂
I feel like Avon was the gold standard of MLM. It didn't "feel" shady. Their products are actually very good quality. They need to drop most of the newer MLM type things they're doing, drop these new, weird little "modern" brands, get their Avon ppl pushing pavement again (or on social media) and BRING BACK THE GOOD PRODUCTS. Avon has had some ICONIC skincare, bath products, fragrances and makeup. Not to mention the costume jewelry and little gifts. They had great stuff. They need to go back to their roots. I would buy from them if they did ❤
I was an Avon lady 😂 I haven't purchased anything from them in a long time but I remember their makeup was pretty mediocre. What I really liked was their perfumes.
My grandma sold it and it’s how she was able to leave my grandpa. The nail polish and perfumes was my favorite; she got my mom to sell it and I loved getting Christmas gifts from them lol I just assumed it went out of style cause it’s all about trends now
I sold Avon for a few years, even knowing they were an mlm. I had a few regular customers that kept me in "the black," but I never made big money. I thought most of the makeup was okay, but I truly enjoyed some of the skin care. I still occasionally buy their shampoo/conditioner and their bubble bath. I also loved the scratch and sniff pages when I was a child.
Great video! New to your channel - I really appreciated the respectful way you reviewed Avon - I am an Avon Rep (a very nonpushy shy one at that!) and have been selling for 18 years and I truly love it - even with all the growing pains we have been experiencing. I have seen this company be amazing and I have seen this company make mistake after mistake. This past year has been rough - inventory has been low because of manufacturing issues - I feel like every time we get bought by a new company/management company they don't understand Avon's amazing history and change things instead of letting its history and tradition guide it. I remain a rep because I love their products, I enjoy helping my customers, and it's nostalgic for me I have memories of skin so soft growing up in Michigan we used it to keep the mosquitoes away when we were up at the lake. I remember my grandmother's perfumes and bubble bath.
My mom's best friend was an Avon lady and my mom a Tupperware lady when I was a kid, lol...I used to get Christmas jewelry as a kid in my stocking from Avon. I inherited my mom's old orange and brown Tupperware containers, they are solid as heck and useful. Better than those cheap Rubbermaid ones.
i was going to respond about skin so soft being a bug repellent. we used it all the time at the cottage ... many 'burly' men i knew would swear by it when they went out fishing.
My grandma started selling Avon very early on. It was in a small town/rural area and she didn't have a car, but that didn't stop her. She walked everywhere that she thought she could make a sale, and she could apparently sell to just about anybody. Farm women who only left the house to go to church on Sunday would end up buying a lipstick or some perfume. Once she could afford a car, there was really no stopping her. She expanded her range to most of the county, and her car trunk was always full of products so a lot of time you didn't have to wait for your order to come in. She would make rounds of the schools and factories and anywhere there were a bunch of women. All our christmas gifts were either Avon products or gifts that she had received from the company for selling so much. She worked for Avon well into her 80s. When she had to get a couple younger women to take over the running for her, she knew it was finally time to retire. She was quite a character. Not a very loving grandmother, to be honest, but a character nonetheless.
@@leavealekaloneNo pensions. Avon ladies were considered independent sales reps working on commission, not employees. Not that many private 😊companies have workplace pension plans anyways. 🙂
What’s really interesting about Avon is that, as far as MLMs go, they’re not terrible. Every person I know that sold/sells Avon genuinely likes the products and they don’t complain about mistreatment or being in debt. This is not to say they aren’t problematic people, only that over the past 10 years or so, most of the people I know actually like the brand.
Their Anew line is nice. Sin so Soft was another one. They also had jewelry. I still have a few pieces that were my sisters and I remember the mini lipsticks. So fun to play with. I think a door to door went out of fashion,I saw Co workers trying to sell Avon on the side (pamplets).
They are actually tolerated for that same reason. They weren't pressuring people into recruiting others. My aunt sold Avon and never had an issue with them.
I miss the Super Shock mascara! 😢 Avon is going super strong in Brazil. They improved by A LOT their makeup game. They are bigger than ever now in here.
Yep lol you're bound to find a few catalogues for not only Avon but Natura, O Boticário, etc in your office break room here, no matter where you work! My nosy ass loves flipping through them and seeing who ordered what
Definitely don’t love supporting mlm’s; however, their moisture therapy hand cream is by far the best hand cream I have ever used. I went years without using it and tried so many other hand creams and none of them came close. Finally caved last year when someone left an Avon catalog in my apartment complex’s laundry room and bought more of the hand cream.
I am an Avon rep and I don't think of Avon as an MLM. I have never had to recruit anyone to make money. I just sell directly to consumers. When you buy from an Avon representative, you are supporting them directly. Please feel good knowing that Avon is one of the only companies where a woman can be in charge and in control of her own finances. For some women who may have been in abusive relationships, have little or no education, or perhaps have a criminal background, Avon is a way to start earning money right off the bat with zero investment. It is free to become a representative, they do not charge for you to have an online store, and if need be, they will send you a visa card where they send your commisions. So many woman have Avon to thank for providing them a way to earn money of their own and giving them the opportunity to meet others. I know MLM's have a bad reputation but believe me when I tell you that Avon is not one of those MLM's. There is no inventory to carry, no monthly fee, no minimum monthly purchases, and no recruiting required. When my twins were born premature and my corporate job did not allow me time off or even pay my wages, it was my Avon checks and my Avon sisterhood that helped keep the lights on. There are countless stories of how Avon has helped women just like me so please don't feel bad about your hand cream purchase because when you shop with a rep, they will get between 20-50% of what you pay. Wouldn't you rather a rep you actually see in person or at least lives in your area earn the money rather than a big faceless corporation? When you shop with a rep, you have direct control over who your dollars are supporting! Thank you for buying from a rep.
I've sold Avon for 38 years and by biggest seller is silicone glove hand cream, personally I love silicone glove and moisture therapy hand cream and use the moisture therapy body lotion all the time. Years ago I had an aunt that was a janitor and her and her fellow workers would use silicone glove before their shift and found out that it really protected their hands,
Most of my HS friends sold Avon in the early 70’s. We’d just toss around the little booklet and order the bluest eyeshadow to wear up to our brows. Also white lipstick.
Whenever I hear about Avon, I'm instantly transported back to my 12th birthday, when my auntie gifted me the best present ever: a complete Avon makeup kit. It was a dream come true! Those products were my faithful companions throughout my teenage years, expiry dates notwithstanding lol
I still remember my mother's Avon rep's name, and was so excited when she would come to our home with her bag of Avon samples and brochures when I was a child.
I’m a bit older (50’s) and remember Avon was a thing we looked forward too. Even though the 80’s and beyond seemed so progressive, there was a portion of society that purchasing makeup was kind of frowned upon. I was raised that the only thing allowed was a bit of lipstick on a holiday. The fight I had to wear eyeliner and mascara, huge. So we didn’t really go to stores. Even as an adult when I’m around other folks my age they act like makeup is a bad thing. So Avon was this magical thing where a lovely human would come to your home, you could purchase stuff discreetly, no judgement. It Sisto catered to various taste levels. It felt empowering. Ironically, MaryKay had a different effect. I think it was probably how they sold their products. So, Avon has this warm lovely place in my heart and really doesn’t apply much to today. I never sold it, nor was pushed to sell it. Thank you for taking me down memory lane
Used to love Avon, used to get so excited when the Avon lady would come with a new catalogue and my mum would let me order some new makeup and my mum always used to and still does order perfume from Avon!
I’m from Brazil, but Avon has been big here for decades. Every lady at my mother’s office would buy and use Avon: lipsticks, fragrances, body lotions… a few like five years ago it was still pretty solid, you could buy it everywhere. Last year, Avon division in Brazil was bought and basically swallowed by a Brazilian giant called Natura. Natura worked pretty similar to Avon l, through the ladies with booklets. However, Natura is discontinuing several Avon products (and people here HATE it! They discontinued their cream deodorants, a crushing success) and pointing towards a change in direct sales, opening physical stores, boosting app and site sales, making it more difficult for the booklet lady to keep working.
It's so weird reading about Natura and Brazilian stuff in English lol. I came to America at 9 years old but totally understand you. The Natura Mamae & Bebe smell is like... the scent of my childhood haha.
@@Saphthings it’s funny because we easily take for granted how big of a business is Natura, a beauty giant. For the salespeople who used to rely on catalog sales this is s heavy blow, but Natura is clearly cutting the bestselling Avon products and trying to take hold of the sales instead of relying on sellers. Let’s see what the future brings!
And here I thought global Avon belonged to NaturaCo, silly me I came to say this. In Brazil, everyone’s first makeup came from Avon (at least from by generation and before), so it’s been huge since ever. Surely, overtime as the Brazilian beauty market evolved, Avon lost a bit of its iconic status, but it’s always been here, now with influencers making their products viral. So it’s really weird to watch a video about a downfall. I believe Avon will always be a thing because it provides quality products with great prices for the overall community
I didn't know Natura bought them! The booklet lady is dying out, but at least for Natura I know you can still have your representative's code added to your online orders so they can get their commission. But honestly it's probably for the better - Natura and Oboticario aren't considered "true" mlms here because their profits do come from sales and not the recruitment of sellers. I believe letting these kinds of representatives die out is an attempt to distance themselves further from that kind of business model and avoid litigation - you know, what with the whole mess with Herbalife and Hinode and Tupperware. I believe Avon still makes an actual profit from direct sales here in Brazil, but I do think they had been shifting their focus towards recruitment for a while - much like Tupperware, another giant with actually good products back in the day that became more and more predatory over the years and is now (finally, blessedly) dying. And honestly, even for Natura and Oboticario, in the end their direct sale representatives barely make any money - I'd much rather have a seller at a store who I know is getting paid actual wages than someone sinking into debt to try and meet the sales quotas of their supposed side gig, as I've seen happen to people in my family.
My grandmother was an Avon rep for over 30 years. I have very fond memories of helping her put the “outlet” pamphlet book inside the new books every month (you hold the book flat in your palm and it opens to exactly the middle where the staples hold it altogether EVERY TIME lol). Loved when she’d get deliveries when I was at her house. She’d always save me the mini lipstick samples (still the cutest things I’ve ever seen in my life!). Also, she was a hoarder so she never returned anything. If her customer wanted to return something, it just went straight in her basement. When I was a teenager, my friends and I would go over there when she wasn’t home and “shop” her basement. I still have an “amethyst” ring that’s worthless but I would save from a fire. My mom always used Odyssey perfume from Avon (we got a great discount haha) and that’s a comfort scent for me. I have a bottle I use just to spritz my pillows or room with if I’m having a bad day. Love Avon!
Yes Odyssey is a beautiful scent. It’s a top selling parfum that is extremely sought after.. that’s a soft floral .. the notes are tuberose, ylang-ylang and oak moss
OMG!! Yes those Jahovah's Witness letters are so scary!! I got one recently that was hand written!! Like.. someone wrote out my whole name and address, someone I've never even met! The contents were so strange and unsettling
Avon actually had some decent body/skincare in the 90s/early 2000s. My cousin sold it then, and my mom was a faithful avon customer in the 80s. I loved it when the Avon lady came to our house, those little lipsticks and perfume samples in the foil packette and all the other little samples were little cherished treasures. My eight year old self studied that catalog like there was gonna be a test. Not down w MLMs however.
I was an Avon lady in the 80’s when my kids were young and loved it, I covered a designated area where I lived and had my regular customers who were great. I now think of it as outdated tbh.
So, first I remember SSS, (Skin So Soft) being what everyone used as a bug repellent when I was a kid. Also, there are so many uniquely shaped vintage Avon perfume bottles in Vermont thrift/antique/junk stores. I think of those things first. I also remember the Avon catalogs being at our house, and pretty much everyone’s house when I was a kid in the 80s. I remember you could only order from the catalog through an Avon lady, whose name was on the back of the catalog.
I had such a hard time figuring out where one of my grandma's lipsticks came from. The shade name label fell off and all that was left was the ac logo. Eventually figured out that it's an Avon lipstick. It's a treasure, along with her Chanel and Lancôme products for nostalgia growing up with grandma or imagining what she was like buying the items during that time.
My mother in law used to sell Avon. It's been so long since I've seen one of their catalogs but I used to get so excited to go through them in my late teens/early 20s. There is something magical about paper catalogs that online shopping can't replicate.
I love your deep dives (and well done on handling all the legal terminology!). If you wanted to do any more deep dives I'd love a video on the way really young tweens and even pre-tweens - like 7yos - are being influenced by TikTok and especially by Lululemon and Drunk Elephant in particular. Twitter is full of people talking about how their 10yos are asking for Drunk Elephant for Christmas and it's crazy.
I taught kindergarten this year and when one of the children wrote her Santa letter, she asked for skincare! A 5 year old asking for skincare! All because of TiK Tok. Predatory practices targeting children needs to be regulated/stopped right now.
My mother-in-law was literally complaining the other day that her favorite Avon perfume was no longer available. I was like THANK GOD cause it smells awful! 😂😂
how old is she? i'm curious. i see people here talking about nostalgia for it, but seriously, i don't consider myself young or old lol, but even back at school we could already tell there was something dodgy and cash grabby about it, but we guessed out mothers just didn't knew better (and it turned out to be partially true. they either were buying just to help an avon-selling friend, or they weren't internet savy to look for reviews, sales, brands, etc)
@@magical571 she's 79 and I get it. It's what was available in small rural towns (nothing against that in case someone wants to yell at me about it) back in the days when the Avon lady was knocking on doors. But if I remember correctly, there were better smelling perfumes available, if not a bit more subtle. Hers literally smells like baby powder mixed with alcohol. Nothing against Avon. I can understand the nostalgic part. I actually enjoyed looking through the Avon catalog (I'm 51) when I was young!
@@Hannah-zw9ow amen! ❤️ This is why I'm reluctant to comment on videos. Someone's always finding something wrong with expressing your thoughts. I don't like it but I don't tell her that. I wouldn't want to hurt her feelings for gosh sakes. Comments also support the creator but I guess this teaches me to continue to keep my fingers (and thoughts) to myself.
You and James have really been helping me lately. Ive been going through scary medical stuff and binging yalls content is such a great distraction. I just found out someone i (and my entire family) considered a brother passed away and i just scrolled for so long looking for a video, and yours is the only one that actually sounded good ❤ thank you❤ you really dont even know how much your content helps🫶🫶💜💜
Sending love & a boundary-respecting hug ❤, it's always so hard when personal trauma and the holidays pile up...hope you have some laughs, some distraction, & some peace. 💕
I love sweet honesty.. it’s still a very popular soft floral scent. I remember Lily of the valley, rose and cedarwood were the notes in that classic parfum
I used to LOVE scanning the Avon catalogues as a kid/teenager. They had a cool range of kids products. My first ever cherry tinted kids nail polish was from Avon. Living in the country with limited options to purchase cosmetics, having access to Avon was really exciting.
I can totally relate, I lived for those catalogues. I also had Oriflame in my country that I remember from the teenage years. Always thought this brand was classier and maybe better quality than Avon
Omg! As a Latina Avon was EVVVEEERRRRYYYYTHINGGGGGG! It was one of my first makeup brands and I remember going through the catalog after my mom made her picks. I don’t use Avon anymore and neither does my mom (mainly because now I buy her makeup now) but I still have a lippie or two, it’s more for sentimental reasons. But Avon always brings good memories
Avon lipstick are amazing. They are lightweight creamy formula with pomegranate extract. They are buildable coverage.. it may surprise you that they are formulated without parabens and sulfate. It’s sold for just $8.99.
My grandmother was the top rep in my area before I was born. She had all this perfume in these amazing bottles that were awarded to her. She had all kinds of things awarded to her. She used to also have these tiny lipstick samples that were perfect for my 4 year old hands. I loved them. I don’t buy Avon anymore because I don’t like their products, but I always think of her when I hear the name. She was my favorite person and the person that got me into makeup.
OMG I just purchased Avon online! But they still use brochures here with the "rub your wrist here to experience..." perfume swatches. I think I saw a video similar like this. I know what they sell in US are totally different in Asia (Philippines) but what I got to know was the OG Sweet Honesty. SSS is a line here from lotion, body wash, soaps and deodorants. Avon Classics for women's underwear (and they last long!). My grandma and mom were also Avon ladies as sideline back in their time.
The first thing that comes to mind, is predatory. I was hired on as an Avon "representative" at the age of 16, while I was still in high school. I never made a sale, I just used up the samples and blocked my upline 😂
Who remembers the tiny lipstick samples? My mom sold avon and we both bought makeup from them. When they stopped door to door, we never bought from them again. Now we have found better cosmetics and better perfume. And the mln stuff is terrible!
I'm glad you did the timeline of when it became a MLM because I was an Avon rep twice and I was sure the second time round that the whole tier thing was new. They really pushed it and I was never interested, I just wanted my little patch to walk around. You also make a good point about saturation - I had a rep creep onto my territory, very frowned upon 😄
I loved it when the Avon Lady used to come and see my Mom🌻I eagerly anticipated receiving the mini lipsticks that my Mom shared with me. I'd put them in my little purse and feel so grown up and glamorous. I still have a little gingerbread man pin that has remnants of the perfume in my jewelry box. Great memories.
My girlfriend was our Avon representative in the late 60s and she sold cake eyeliner in black and white like crazy. We will kid he about it today, but it was great stuff for the times. An absolute must. She continued to be an entrepreneur and along with her husband are by any standard wealthy and philanthropic.
Fun fact about my childhood: My mom was a nurse and there was a time when the nurses where we live (Canada) went on strike for a long time. My mom had three kids to raise alone so took up selling Avon for a short time just to supplement her income at the time. The funniest part of it was that my mom never wears makeup. 😂
We had an Avon lady come to sell us the Skin So Soft all the time. I will say, it was the only thing that helped keep sand fleas away from you while at USMC Boot Camp on Paris Island, SC. So random. 😂😂
I love avon and have bought from them for years. I became a rep in 2020 and loved it for a while as I was making some pocket money as a SAHM and and it got me out of the house over lockdown. (My village is predominantly older ladies and they love a catalogue and the delivery service because they don’t do online shopping). Then my upline got pushy to get me to recruit more people and flood my social media and social circle with marketing. It was exhausting and I basically gave up as I also had no time to do it anymore (I’d developed a larger customer base than I could handle and family life was getting more demanding) so I am now what’s known as a “personal shopper” where I buy as a rep and get discount on products but I don’t have to sell to anyone. I still love some of the products and there are some that I literally cannot find better alternatives for with other brands!
My neighbor sold Avon so I first heard about it from my mom, she loved ordering the perfumes and skin so soft. Every year from the time I was around 7 years old my mom made me a stocking stuffer with Avon products. I used their products until I was a teen and have to say I never had any complaints about any of the products I used.
I had an Avon lady living down the road. She was lovely. I remember my mother getting the catalogs and looking through them. Smelling the perfume samples from the pages. Looking at the barbies and wishing I could get them. (I'm trans, so I wasn't allowed at the time) I remember my mothers orders being dropped off or else we'd go get them. Or I'd have to run down the street and collect them. Sadly the Avon lady and my mother are no longer with us. I also remember my friend giving me an Avon lipstick when I first came out to her. It's amazing how one brand can be so significant to so many people.
So fascinating that as a housewife in the 50’s, during your day of housekeeping and stuff a lady would come to the door and you could take a lil shopping break. 😊 wow, how different the world was back then…
When I think of Avon I only remember the tiny sized lipsticks my mom was forced to buy from her neighbors. She never used them and I transformed them into crayons 😂
My mom was an "avon lady" but only so she could get discounted products really haha. Always had the catalogs around and it was definitely my first exposure to makeup and fragrance.
In Romania, Avon is still somewhat popular. I've seen many famous artists and celebrities gracing the covers of the catalogues and I admired them so much. My mum and I like the perfumes (e.g. Today Tomorrow Always, Perceive, Far Away etc.). I also like their shower washes and makeup products. :)
My grandmother was with California Perfume Company, and when it became Avon. She was THE Avon Lady for her small town in Nebraska, and I looked up to her❤ She always had extra on hand for someone needing a gift, refills on deodorant, and how she treated everyone as family. Grandma would give me and my sister a shoebox to fill with all the makeup or perfume we wanted! Sometimes we get to test new products too! Plus the super cute mini lipstick 💄
Their “Anew” was really good like 20 years ago. I used to use their lipglosses and liners. They also had extended foundation shades. I was anemic; their fair shades fit my skin tone, while most drugstore foundations looked orange on me. I just kind of drifted away from Avon. 🤷♀️
My mom sold Avon for about 45 minutes when i was 5 and i was absolutely obsessed with all the tiny lipstick samples. Ive been obsessed with makeup ever since then. LOL
My mother wore Roses Roses by Avon and it is a fragrance that I will always remember. To this day I have two Poodle bottles that originally contained one of their perfumes.
Avon is now owned by LG (Korean appliance company). They’ve added Korean beauty (Isa Knox) and some creams sell for over $300! If Avon brought back old favorites (Bird of Paradise, Here’s My Heart, Hawaiian White Ginger, etc) they might have a resurgence. The one scent I can clearly remember is a room spray called “Swiss Snowdrops”. Ahhhhh
From when I was really little, I remember the mini lipstick samples & the Sweet Honesty perfume that my older sisters loved. Everywhere I worked when I was younger, there were always books in the breakroom. A few years ago I ordered skin so soft bug repellent from a local woman. She said something about not using books because they cost her too much & wanted me to order from her website so she didn't have to pay shipping. That made it sound like the reps were Avon's biggest customers, which is often the case.
A few years back (maybe longer), Avon had a wonderful two-part face cream in their Anew line. One side was a cream, the other a gel, and they worked on my rosacea-ravaged face. No irritation, just nice, soft skin. I also used to get the hand cream; it was so nice! I remember buying these products at a booth at a local farmers' market. Haven't seen any Avon products anywhere in quite some time, so I found other brands to go to. I also remember my mom's collection of Avon fragrances, and the funky colognes and aftershaves she bought for my dad, mostly so she could collect the figural containers. Those bottles actually sold pretty well when we held the estate sale after she died. Thanks for bringing back those memories for me. Happy Christmas!
Avon has a special place in my heart cuz it’s how I got started in my beauty career and became a makeup artist and influencer. I was a rep for about 10 yrs and I rejoined earlier this year. I like the products, some of the jewelry and I enjoy helping my customers.
I remember being entranced by the tiny lipstick tube lipstick samples when I was a child. My Nana used to let us choose a child appropriate item to order. We’d wait with anticipation that made it seem like it took forever to get. I can close my eyes and still smell some of those fragrances she had.
Actually, Avon did try to pivot to a younger market I think in the early 2000s? They created a spin-off company called Mark that was specifically sold to and by high schoolers. I remember there was a lady in an office where I worked who sold Avon and she included Mark catalogs. They had a very Jane Cosmetics-style vibe.
🤔. I forgot I was gifted a cloth Mark make up bag until it got a well, mark on it ( horrible runny stain) Was wondering about the name * Make your mark*. It was well made.
I've only just discovered you but I really like your work! Not only are you good at this, just the right amount of sass- but you're not condescending. And I love that you present these subjects with dignity. I'm watching them all now!!! Thank you for your good work!!!
What comes to mind is the betrayal, many many many many, and possibly one more many years ago when they discontinued eyeshadow quad #24 and left me in a decades-long struggle to find the perfect color match for it. Don't judge me, please, because back in the day, that's what we had...Avon. Oh, that and Skin So Soft. I live in the deep south of the USA and a lot of people use it as a mosquito and bug repellant instead of Off, they just put it on their exposed skin. Some people even rub a little of it into dog fur to keep mosquitos and fleas away.
Avon equals perfume in very strange containers like an owl with a graduation cap, And very cute very tiny sample lipsticks. Skin so soft lotion which repels mosquitoes. There's an online catalog now with descriptions and prices and such. It almost looks exactly like the old printed catalogs. Each agent I think has a website because I've seen the Avon website and I've seen an agents Avon website.
I was originally so confused when you said Avon was an MLM because I didn't remember it being structured like that when I knew people who sold it. Makes sense now that I know they adopted that model later.
Thank you for a great exposé! I've been waiting for this one.👻🖤 My grandmother and mother bought lots of Avon perfumes and colognes. They collected the iconic bottles and I still have lots of them. I see Avon sellers at flea markets which I think they're not supposed to do but I ain't no snitch. 🤐
Lol! They're not. I use to sell Mary Kay, and same thing. Not supposed to sell at fairs, etc. But I wanted to meet new people and make money. Only did it once. I still get some Avon perfumes and lipsticks through a friend of my mom's. :)
I can remember being a child back in the 70s (yes, I’m old) my mother had a drawer full of the little Avon bullet lipstick samples. They were great samples, but they were the cutest tiniest tiny bullet lipstick you could ever imagine . White plastic packaging, a little top you pull off, and the lipstick is in the shape of a bullet, but there is no twisting up what you see is what you get. However, quite a good amount of product considering the samples you get today .. I’m looking at you with your foundation samples that are barely even a swatch never mind actually sampling the product. With each Avon order if they would throw in a couple of those lipsticks. This was the late 60s and early 70s and the majorities were red and frosted pinks … brings back a sweet memory
I was an avon lady in the 80's. Just did it for the discounts for family & friends. 🤦🏻♀️ Avon ceased to exist in Australia back in 2018. I kinda miss it.
I remember “skin so soft” which had this myth it was a mosquito repellent so everyone took it on their holibags 😂 also “yer Da sells Avon” is an insult in Scotland 😂 I don’t even know why
I remember always wanting to check the AVON catalogues that my mom had just because they smelled good lol I was a little kid and couldn't really use most of the stuff there, but I remember my mom asking me if wanted anything just before she went to visit the lady who actually sold the products, that was in mid to late 2000s and I honestly don't remember anyone else ever saying anything about AVON now that I think about it 😂 You just unlocked some very specific memories for me lol
Here in NZ we have a "Do Not Knock" policy. That includes a sticker. Any door-to-door seller that ignores a “Do Not Knock” sticker faces a fine of up to $40,000.
I used to love when the avon lady dropped off the holiday catalog! My sister and I would mark off everything we wanted for Christmas. Their Moisturizing eye makeup remover is still the best one I've ever used.
I’m almost 40 but I only know of Avon through my mom and especially my grandma. Having the Avon lady stop by every now and then was part of life. Thanks for shouting out Savannah! I’ve been watching her for so long. Love her type of sass!
I’m from Russia, countryside, 3000 people In 2006 at age 14 I started to sell Avon in my school, my class teachers, my classmates were purchasing Avon perfume from me, me myself I couldn’t afford much, maybe I was doing 10-20 dollars in a month and spending all that money on samples from Avon itself . Warm memories though
I used to love Avon perfume. My faves were rare rubies, rare emeralds, foxfire and fantasque. Not seen a catalogue in years. My mum was a rep in the 1970’s.
Not the Jehovah's😂 I was Working as a manager of a library And I kept telling this women that I was never going to be a Jehovah's witness Because I'm a witch. She started leaving pamphlets in my mailbox at work. It got so much that I had to sit down with my boss Because She was 100% not allowed to shove her religion down my throat at work! I didn't know Avon was so old either exc I did try to be an Avon lady but It's impossible nowadays. I used to be obsessed with Fragrances
Avon...I think of the Skin So Soft bath oil, with the matching lotion, deodorant, and bar soap in that Turquoise color. And when they came out with the Pink version.
I still spend a small fortune on Avon every month! I love the Avon! I've been buying from them for years and I remember my mum had a lovely Avon lady. My cousin was an Avon rep for a while too a few years ago 💖
Excellent video I always love your historical content. I think it's an interesting note that in the US women were traditionally in the home (middle class/upper class) until WWII when they were required to work in the factories. When the war was over and the men came home, they wanted their jobs and head of household status back. Women had been running the home, supplementing their mens pay with their own and were in charge of how and where it was spent. So when they men came home and women were expected to go back to homemaking it was something a lot of women didn't want but didn't have a way to push back. Avon gave them that opportunity; to make their own money again and money in the US always means freedom. I'm disappointed they turned into an MLM because I think they did a lot of good for women back in the day.
Just before that one person says it… NO I don’t literally mean … no one is buying Avon.. it’s a figure of speech… like “no one wears skinny jeans anymore” doesn’t mean literally no one wears skinny jeans… 👍🏼
I love your explanation. ❤
It's me, I'm the one person still wearing skinny jeans 😂
@@ashbunny2645same
@@ashbunny2645 I stand with you in solidarity wearing skinny jeans and a side part 🤣
Lovely comment. ❤
I’m so sorry this happened to you all. It makes me angry. Sometimes I wonder if some of the mentally of people in the USA are still segregated in their minds. So much hatred it is sad 😢
That's amazing, thank you for sharing.
They do nice scents and they're just a decent brand overall imo.
truuuue! avon jewelery and vintage homewares is actually a saught after items at the thrift
Exactly this!! My mom has been doing AVON for over 40 years (I’ll be 40 in Feb). She doesn’t mess with the MLM part, and never has. She used to make President’s Club before they went to the MLM model in 2005, and I know she would much prefer it to go back to the way it was.
@@sksksks7533AVON jewelry from the 90’s and early 2000’s was sooo iconic, good quality, esp for the price! I wore it all thru high school
I found a stack at the laundromat. They're still being printed
agreed!
And it had the perfume smells 😭😭😭💔💔💔💔
I loved it too. That’s actually such a strangely nice childhood memory that I hadn’t thought of haha. The perfume samples reminder also really brought it back for me 😂
They still have them. I got one before Christmas
Awww that's amazing
That’s sweet but that’s a human being saving you, not the brand.
Wow, glad you're ok! Was your head sticking out, though? How did you survive half an hour?
@@marmar1293 that's true, but she probably wouldn't of been able to save them if she wasn't an avon lady yk?
I remember my mom giving me the teeny tiny little lipsticks that were samples from the local Avon lady.
I bet lots of us got our first "grown up lippie" that way! I used to pour over the catalog & to this day, a bullet lipstick means " I am a grown, independent woman" to me
Omg I’d forgotten those! I loved those too as a young teen!
Same. My mom had samples because she sold Avon for a short time and I was so obsessed over them. I was only 5 and I'm 47 now and still absolutely adore 💄 and all things makeup😍
Absolutely!
Same❤
My grandmother recently passed at age 92. I asked to keep all of her lipstcks- no intent on using them, they're just sentimental. Nearly all of them are from Avon. They still have really beautiful color to this day! It makes me a little sad that they have such sketchy business practices, because my grandma loved them so much.
R.i.p to her😢
I can tell you, Avon lipstick lasted longer than any brand, it rarely went 'off' and had good staying power.
Avon lipstick are soo good I use them and they are so nourishing and smooth it's insane
LOL
My memory with Avon is when i was living with my dads girlfriend for a while when I was 14 and she gave me one of the catalog books and I circled a whole bunch of stuff and forgot about it AND SHE GOT ALL OF IT and charged my dad and he was so pissed lmfao nothing had any prices listed from what I remember so I'm still not sute how much it came out to 😅
😂😂😂😂
As a little girl I was always SO excited to get the latest Avon catalog and would beg my mother to order lip glosses and perfume sticks for me. I actually still wish I could get their Lilac perfume stick. It was aromatherapy for me and always made me feel better about life. And Skin So Soft saved me from having to spend an entire summer smelling like Deep Woods Off. And my neighbor, who's husband had badly abused her, was able to finally stand on her own two feet to raise her kids after her divorce by selling Avon. I'm grateful for Avon.
I use SSS every day! Lol
I have owned avon bijoux accessories. Really not bad at all. They are quite nice and I didn’t experience any irritation or skin issues
I worked for the company. As an employee. Didn't sell. Their jewelry was fantastic. The earrings don't cause allergic reactions. The rest of the products mostly were not good. I still have rings and jewelry from them from over a decade ago. I'm sure your ring was beautiful
@@ghoultoothThe expense of the ring is a almost irrelevant. The faithfulness is what is important. 😊
#cringe
I cannot believe the parallels in our comments
I loved those!
I'm 57. I still have some perfume bottles from back in the day (my favorite is a little amber faun); both my own and those that belonged do my mom
I got my grandma’s mini lipstick 💄 when I was little, I miss those
As a former Avon lady, one of the other reasons the company isn’t doing well is the near constant changing of its CEOs.
It works so well too! It's the only insect repellent I use now, all actual insect repellents I've tried just don't compare
Yesssss
So sag true dogs too!!
I used this stuff on my horses for fly repellent when I rode. This stuff was AMAZING!
Skin So Soft, that brings back memories. Best mosquito repellant I ever used.
I would buy from them if they did ❤
They were on the ethical side of MLM's.
I was an Avon lady 😂
I haven't purchased anything from them in a long time but I remember their makeup was pretty mediocre. What I really liked was their perfumes.
The perfumes and underwear was lovely. My aunty was an Avon lady for decades.
The perfumes, well some anyway were Amazing!
The body and bath stuff was lush
Me too, 😂
Same here. My favorite fragrance was Imari (the original).😊
I remember Avon in the 90’s, it was huge… it’s crazy how much it’s fallen off… skin so soft is still the best to stop mosquitoes, though! :)
Yes omg it was huge in the 90s! I remeber the bath pearl things!
Their skin so soft line is actually really good. That has been the only thing that has got rid of my psoriasis breakouts.
Skin So Soft was the only product anyone my age in the early aughts would buy 😆
i was going to respond about skin so soft being a bug repellent. we used it all the time at the cottage ... many 'burly' men i knew would swear by it when they went out fishing.
What an Icon‼️ did Avon supported her during retirement? Do they have pension or something?
@@leavealekalone To be honest, I don't know. I wasn't close to her by that point.
I buy their products online. I didn’t even know they were an MLM. Their Skin so Soft is my go-to bath and body line.
Exactly, my mom tried to get into it a few times and was never successful, but she never went broke either. It was basically free to try.
@@ALT-vz3jn What is MLM?
I miss the Super Shock mascara! 😢
Avon is going super strong in Brazil. They improved by A LOT their makeup game. They are bigger than ever now in here.
Yep lol you're bound to find a few catalogues for not only Avon but Natura, O Boticário, etc in your office break room here, no matter where you work! My nosy ass loves flipping through them and seeing who ordered what
S hock the best!
Ew, the white lipstick. TBH, though, my friends and I just used Erace (by Max Factor) as lipstick. Also ew.
Whenever I hear about Avon, I'm instantly transported back to my 12th birthday, when my auntie gifted me the best present ever: a complete Avon makeup kit. It was a dream come true! Those products were my faithful companions throughout my teenage years, expiry dates notwithstanding lol
AWWWW omg I love this story!!!😂❤️ so relatable and so cute lol
My grandma used to let me look through the Avon catalogue and pick out a nail polish when I was little 😂
Aw that’s so cute though! See people really have fond memories of the brand
Same here memories😂😂😂😂😂😂
And here I thought global Avon belonged to NaturaCo, silly me
I came to say this.
The tiny tester lipsticks, my mom used to let me have them and I felt so special. Also Skin so Soft
Yeeessss my mom used to make me use skin so soft for mosquitoes 😂
Yes came here to talk about these! They also had a killer pore reducing mask!
Was it just me or did that really work?!
@@corriebelle it did!!!🤣
When I think of avon, the first thing that comes to mind is skin so soft for keeping the mosquitos away in the Summer
@@Littlemissdirtbaggirl chill out Jesus Christ it’s a perfume that a stranger on the internet you’ll never meet doesn’t like
how old is she? i'm curious. i see people here talking about nostalgia for it, but seriously, i don't consider myself young or old lol, but even back at school we could already tell there was something dodgy and cash grabby about it, but we guessed out mothers just didn't knew better (and it turned out to be partially true. they either were buying just to help an avon-selling friend, or they weren't internet savy to look for reviews, sales, brands, etc)
My aunt wore so much Imari it’s the name of her granddaughter 😂
You and James have really been helping me lately. Ive been going through scary medical stuff and binging yalls content is such a great distraction. Hi! I read your comment and I wanted to send my condolences. I hope whatever medical issues you’re facing begin to look up soon!
I would love for a series from Robert on the history of make up and skincare.
Same, I love going back in history, imagine let's say "The history of a blush"..we will go back to French révolution, fascinating idea❤
I remember my mom having a slew of the tiny white sample tubes of lipstick in the 60s. I loved looking through the new samples.
My grandmother used to be an Avon lady and I remember products called, Sweet Honesty. That term stays with me still to this day.
Same
Oh my god YEESSS! Latina here too and Avon was top tier back then.
Wow. That's awful. Grooming you to be an Avon hon. Crazy!
Who remembers the tiny lipstick samples? My mom sold avon and we both bought makeup from them. When they stopped door to door, we never bought from them again. Now we have found better cosmetics and better perfume. And the mln stuff is terrible!
I had such a stock of those when I sold Avon. They were awesome
@@kirstenmaki4657And still available in Canada from time to time in a fancy container -- 30 minis for about $42 Canadian (about $32 US)
I still buy their skin so soft products all the time. They’re my go-to shower products. Much Better quality than BBW.
Fun fact about my childhood:
My mom was a nurse and there was a time when the nurses where we live (Canada) went on strike for a long time.
This is exactly me. I actually love some of the skincare products. They have really helped my skin lately.
Oh my gosh, I forgot those! My grandma bought like 40 shades of mauve and nude in those.
@@LunarEleven hahaha! They were really cute and small but made for horrible lipsticks 💄 Never stayed on for more than an hour.
Love the Today.. it has Magnolia
Those mini lipsticks are still used to give to our customers
OMG all the moms on my street used to sell it!! The thing I remember the most is that all their perfumes used to smell the same. 😅
They did!! 😂😂😂😂
Moonwind was my favourite scent of all time..
My mother and To A Wild Rose perfume.
Was that the serum and cream mix, black and gold 📦 packaging?xx
As Donna described it, that would pump out and mix together then? If so it's still available. 🙂
My grandpa had a whole collection of novelty cologne bottles. My grandma had their porcelain nativity set. I have fond memories of some Avon products.
They had a very Jane Cosmetics-style vibe.
omg i still have a mark hair product! It works so good that i use it sparingly.
🤔. I forgot I was gifted a cloth Mark make up bag until it got a well, mark on it ( horrible runny stain) Was wondering about the name * Make your mark*. It was well made.
I miss the Mark. line so much it was incredible!!
Yes there are Avon Ambassador that can help you online
One thing I didn't know was that Avon was once one of the biggest jewelry producers in the world. Pretty weird.
I was originally so confused when you said Avon was an MLM because I didn't remember it being structured like that when I knew people who sold it. Makes sense now that I know they adopted that model later.
Thank you for a great exposé! I've been waiting for this one.👻🖤
My grandmother and mother bought lots of Avon perfumes and colognes.
My mom bought me the Avon bath talc powder in a bunny container back in the day. The powder puff was the bunny’s pink tail. I loved it so much.
Lol same in Liverpool I’ve seen it graffitied in toilets 🤣
Wasn't a myth, they use a chemical Icaridin which is similar to Deet so it did aid in repelling mosquitos but Deet is more effective....
@@thewraith3366 that’s really interesting I always assumed it was a myth. Probably because it wasn’t strong enough for Scottish. Midges 😂
It certainly did work.
yer Da sells Avon is something I hear a bit in Manchester as well xD
I remember always wanting to check the AVON catalogues that my mom had just because they smelled good lol
I was a little kid and couldn't really use most of the stuff there, but I remember my mom asking me if wanted anything just before she went to visit the lady who actually sold the products, that was in mid to late 2000s and I honestly don't remember anyone else ever saying anything about AVON now that I think about it 😂
You just unlocked some very specific memories for me lol
Here in NZ we have a "Do Not Knock" policy. That includes a sticker. Any door-to-door seller that ignores a “Do Not Knock” sticker faces a fine of up to $40,000.
I have bought Avon in NZ. And brought it back home with me to the USA.
Avon Skin So Soft was a staple of my childhood. We begged are mom for lip glosses, perfume sticks, and nail polishes!
Related, but I still occasionally see pink Mary Kay vehicles, shocked they're still around!
I’m from Russia, countryside, 3000 people
In 2006 at age 14 I started to sell Avon in my school, my class teachers, my classmates were purchasing Avon perfume from me, me myself I couldn’t afford much, maybe I was doing 10-20 dollars in a month and spending all that money on samples from Avon itself . Warm memories though
I used to love Avon perfume. My faves were rare rubies, rare emeralds, foxfire and fantasque. Not seen a catalogue in years. My mum was a rep in the 1970’s.
My mom was an Avon lady for 40 yrs. Her mom was also an Avon lady in a small town in Nevada and would sell to customers by the grocery bag full!
Love that you shouted out Savanah Marie! She's right up there with CC Suarez when it comes to make-up and content production!
