Whether or not The Godfather has romanticised the mafia is debatable. Yes, the power of gangsters has always facinated people but when you actually watch the movie (or read the book) the lifestyle is actually showing how the characters not only lose themselves the deeper they get into business, but they also lose everyone they love (or have to push them away, either for protection or for liability reasons). Of course, reality is way worse than fiction when it comes to the mafia.

My Ex is Sicillian American, his dad was a "business man" in NJ and we side eye and cackle at this trend. Ive met the families and seen the women they are emulating. Most women are flashy and always in glam because they had no choice, they were expected to look beautiful and successful as they are a direct reflection of her husband and HIS success. Alot of this trend is rooted in misogyny and violence and its not great to minimize it into a micro trend. Just my 2 pennies.

You could say that about a lot of Black fashion seen in hip hop and rap. I wouldn't assume just because someone dresses that way doesn't mean that they partake in a certain problematic lifestyle or want to actually join a gang. I like wearing 50s fashion, but that doesn't mean I want to be a woman in the 50s that was littered with misogyny and racism. We have a saying in the vintage community, "Vintage style, not vintage values" for this exact reason.

to call this "a narcissism thing" is such a lazy (and ableist) cop out... young people learn to define themselves through their surroundings. Back in the day we had subcultures, for example. Today's society is not only more fast paced, there's also a lot of things going on at the same time and constant exposure to all sorts of media that's easily accessible and replaces regular conversation. It's a systemic problem and instead of shaming them maybe we should be helping kids ground themselves and model adequate behaviour for them so they don't get so lost while navigating this.

I remember this story (I'm Italian) that made it to the news. This mod guy was a mafia kid, he fell in love with a normal girl, he harassed her DAILY and eventually proposed to her but she didn't want to be in a relationship with this guy (obvously) since she was also in love with another man.
Because in italy at the time we had the law of the "matrimonio riparatore" (=the repair marriage) he r@ped this woman and proposed to her. Because of this law, after SA, a woman was forced to marry the guy who r@ped her in order to save face in front of the society of the time and her own family.
She absolutely refused and took things to court (what. a. absolute. QUEEN.) and eventually this court case made the law of the "matrimonio riparatore" illegal.
I don't remember the name of the girl but she's an absolute italian legend and made history.
I wanted to tell this story because maybe another girl went through all of this and became a mob wife against her will. It's absolutely NOT all glitz and glam. This is a serious topic and deserves to be treated seriously.

I’m sorry but if these fakes make it look bad then isn’t that a good thing? I really don’t get why some were offended by this, personally. It’s such a shame that women who have no idea what any of this shit is who just happen to like to dress like this will be lumped together with people pretending to be something they aren’t on tiktok because people also can’t see the difference between just dressing a certain way and also acting a persona.

Dark feminine/Pinup was always my look and I feel like now I'm just looking silly because the clean girls have all turned on this character because they lack their own identity. There is a distinct difference between Italian culture and Italian American culture. As someone who is Italian American and grew up in Queens and Long Island, “mob” and “mob wives” aesthetic is just the norm. We’ve all been donning big hair, heavy makeup, spray tans, leather, black, and leopard for our whole lives. It’s gaudy, it’s fun, it’s kind of tacky but in the best glamorous way possible. I now live in Florida, and I always stick out like a sore thumb because I took my “mob wife” aesthetic that I’ve been doing my whole life with me. But I wouldn’t change a thing about it.

My Aunt’s husbands family were hit men for the mob. It was the family business. My Uncle didn’t want to follow the family business yet had to work for the mob. He ran a limousine service and the mob would use the limos whenever they wanted. His only rule was they had to return them in the same shape they were in when they borrowed them. The limos would be returned with all brand new interiors and new paint jobs because they had executed someone in the car 😂 Truth is stranger than fiction y’all and this was the truth. I am just happy that most likely, at least in the Northern hemisphere, it's gonna be over as soon as the weather starts getting warmer...hard to wear faux fur in 35 C degrees heat lol

I love your eyebrow make up! It reminds me of Kintsugi, where broken pottery is mended and the cracks are coated with gold!

Loving your fur coat. I remember the trend from months ago that was ‘can you survive as a rich girl friend/wife that fit the visual aesthetic of the mob wife trend

In regards to the trends being completely different from each other, I've noticed that too. When people were tired of the overly contoured glam looks from 2016, they moved onto more colorful looks with the heavy blush and thick eyeliner. Then they moved onto a pseudo-natural direction with the feather brows and clean girl aesthetic. And I guess people want bold make-up again.

Never gone on to TikTok, nor followed their trends. It’s too much…the changes, the desire for internet fame…

I'm so glad that I'm already an old and grumpy millennial and I can absolutely not give a quack about trends or any people telling me what biscuits I need in my pantry to claim a mob wife aesthetics. Like fr catching up with TikTok seems absolutely mentally exhausting, and all I need from social media is just another video from any Welsh twin and I'm good. Life is great 💜🖤

So true! That people genuinely think they need to change their entire look due to a trend have no personal style or identity. I understand it more from high schoolers or people in their early 20s who are still experimenting with style, but full grown adult women acting like they need to change their whole look because of a trend is embarrassing.

Fellow millennial here… yeah this obsession with TikTok trends is honestly embarrassing. They seem to be sapping any idea of developing your own personal style… why he a sheep when you can be a lone wolf, with your own distinctive style!?
