I'll always be a Sonic CD and Sonic Lost World apologist. I like what they were trying to do with them. To me, those sonic games are most charming, and I'll never deny they're flaws. What kept sonic together over the years ain't the games, but his fandom, and the fact that we have that one sonic game we enjoy that makes us come back to it.

I'm just happy that we finally got a good 3D mainline Sonic game since generations. It might not be the best Sonic game out there but it's definitely a decent one and a lot of fun in my opinion.

I just wish that we had more visual themes than, green hill, sky sanctuary, chemical plant and city. I do agree that "amazing" isn't the perfect word to describe them though. Another great thing about Sonic Adventure 2 is when you mash the A button during cutscenes, Big will make short little appearances. That just adds to the funny.
Being someone who played Sonic Colours DS when it first came out, sinking a bunch of time into it, getting to the final boss only to not mash quick enough for the final part of the fight, deleting my save file because of it, and playing it through again with even more enjoyment: It's a very unheard game and definitely deserves to be this highly ranked
It's so crazy how you actually fight the Mother Wisp in that version instead of just the Egg Nega Wisp that the Wii version had. DS by far had the better final fight of the two!
back when i was a kid and couldnt afford the games i wanted, and was limited by what i was allowed, i got sonic colors for the ds even though i wanted it for the wii. overall it was one of the most enjoyable experiences i had and it was one of the few games i actually had the attention to play all the way through.
I still have my current copy of Sonic Colours DS to this day and I love the game, way more than Sonic Colours Ultimate for the switch. I got it early into the game's life and then lost my first cartridge on a vacation, had never gotten past Starlight Carnival Act 1 on that cartridge, and I was DEVASTATED, as that was my all time favourite DS game. A few years later on Christmas, my mum had known how sad I had been about losing the game and managed to get ahold of a second hand cartridge of the game and I will be honest, that christmas I knew what my favourite present was and as soon as I got my ds that day, I worked out how to wipe the old save off of the cartridge and started a new game. It's the cartridge I finally beat the game, collected the chaos emeralds on, beat Mother Wisp and am trying to fully 100% the game still whenever I can play it Ultimate just can't compare to the nostalgia I feel when playing Sonic Colours DS

Anyone can come up with objective metrics to rank games. But, hearing their subjective opinion is what I find a lot more enjoyable.

I absolutely loved Triple Trouble as a kid. I already loved Sonic as a kid from the cartoons so when I got my game gear with Sonic 2 I was so excited. The box hyped up the presence of my favorite character Tails, only for him to not be playable. Also, the game is ludicrously hard, even after revisiting it when I was older, and that bad ending crushed me. Without a Genesis to play the main series until way later with just standalone Sonic and Knuckles (no Tails), getting Triple Trouble which was much more forgiving, finally let me play as Tails, and had special stages for replay value, I adored that game and played through it so many times trying to get all of the emeralds. While a lot of this is nostalgia, I'll take it over Sonic 2 8-bit any day.
watching this after they announced Tails, Knuckles and Amy as playable characters for Frontiers next year hits different. i’m so happy Frontiers is doing well and i truly hope Sonic Team stick to this format.

I'm surprised to see the Master System and Game Gear games so low on the list, considering I have pretty fond memories of them, despite their slower speed and "screen crunch" (which they fixed in Triple Trouble by designing it with the Game Gear's specs and resolution in mind).
Ranking them lower than games that fundamentally don't work as intended honestly comes across as petty. They're not fast or overflowing with novelty but they're still well controlling and have quite a lot of replay value for the time through the in stage Emerald hiding places. Hell, the stage designs being 'basic' is a good thing given how early they were and that players were still learning even basic tech like boss bouncing.

Just an FYI, Tails CAN fly in the 8 bit games. By holding up and tapping the jump button, Tails is snapped to a grid, in which you use the D-Pad to control him. It's not as great as the Genesis games, but hey- flight!
My favorite game play on heroes is team chaotics because of the exploration of the entire stage which means it will be a bit easier to focus on keys and that's what I love.
In my case, the best advance duo is Cream/Knuckles. It's pretty much Advance 2 Cream but with an auto hitbox around you. Sonic/Cream is also a very good combo for cheesing the final boss.
Sonic 1 on the master system was the first game I ever had. It defined my understanding of platform games and I wish they included it in The sega collections instead of the game gear version as it runs better and the screen size is much better.
Eh…I disagree. The level design of those games is weak due to screen crunch and hardware limitations, and the graphics and music is lackluster. This especially applies to Sonic Blast and Sonic Chaos. Triple Trouble does deserve a remake, though. I think Mr. Bandy would agree with me on this: I do not hate these games because they’re on the Master System and Game Gear. I think that they are legitimately bad games. I commend you for finding enjoyment out of them since I could not after giving them so many chances.

My mom got Sonic Mania for me a while back. I thought it was going to be a garbage 3D game. It ended up being one of my personal favorite games. I have to agree with you, we need a Sonic Mania 2!

fantastic video. The sonic character is part of my childhood as well. The first game i played was Sonic3 on megadrive, and I was so excited on the game startup that I literally (means really literally) got a nosebleed out of over-excitement.
Sonic Advance 3 was by far my most favorite game. I don't understand all the flack it got, but then again, when you're a kid, you're not actively looking for every flaw in a game. Sonic Battle was really fun too. I love when Sega opts to mix up the formula and implement a new mechanic. Awesome video man.
Even as someone who was old enough to be critical and in my mid-teens I loved Sonic Advance 3. And I still think it's the best 2D Sonic game after the classics and Mania. The music is superb, the stage design is excellent and almost every stage is fun to go through for just about all of the character combinations (I think there's like 21 in total). Every world has an overworld, 3 stages and a boss... and the overworld & stages all have different versions of the same song. Honestly, the game's fantastic. On top of Advance 3 usually being underrated, I'd also say Heroes gets a lot of undeserved flack. Meanwhile, Generations is way overrated. The modern Sonic stages are mostly fine, but even then not nearly as fine as the good 3D games like both Adventure games and Heroes. But the classic stages are just complete garbage. Just meh level design and awful physics & controls. Also pretty dumb Frontiers ranks so high in this list. It's playable and at times enjoyable. But overal the game just has so many flaws I can't even call it a good game overal. I bought it for full price because I still wanted to support a new 3D Sonic game, but it just simply isn't that good. The boss battles are completely terrible and that's saying something since most bosses in 3D Sonic games are bad. The combat can look cool, but it's just very meh overal. And the controls are just all kinds of bad. They work okay for the open world section, even if kinda meh. But the actual levels are not only just rather poorly designed for most part... even the parts they took from other games are garbage in this game because of the awful controls. And there's almost no stage variety. Music's not very memorable either, etc.
As a person who has played Sonic Colors for the DS before any other console, Colors for the DS was amazing without a doubt. Even though it didn't have cutscenes or extra wisps, it was outstanding for a port for the DS. Also, I'm not certain if this is exactly true but you can fight the Wisps' mother if you collect all the red rings throughout the stages. Either way, Sonic Colors (DS) was a blast to play for my first Sonic game ever played.

I have to disagree with so many of these placements. Who in their right mind ranks Sonic Triple Trouble lower than Sonic 1 GBA? Sonic Spinball Master System/GameGear was better than the 16-bit version which has worse controls & more unfair level design decisions. Sonic 1 Master System is much too low on the list to where it's clear you are biased against the 8-Bit games unfairly, although a few of them were awful. I don’t usually comment but I really enjoyed this video. I have some disagreements for sure but very good list overall and I especially LOVE the Mega Collection Museum music in the back as your conclusion. Absolutely loved the free comic they gave you with the game if you explored the museum a little bit. Crazy to see how far Sonic has come since then.

FINALLY someone who enjoyed Sonic Chronicles other than me! Sad to see it released in the way it was, being rather unfinished. but i loved it for what it was!
Sonic Heroes and pretty much all of the GCN titles is what got me into the franchise, though I personally think lost world should be placed lower because of how the story portrayed Tails in the worst possible way. (Specifically turning against Sonic when helping Eggman even though he was fine with it in SA2B) I haven't played anything after 06 besides Frontiers, but I might check out on a few games after that time considering the praise you've given them.
1:36:48 It doesn’t just change up the colors, it changes the layout as well. Unfortunately not all of the encore mode layouts are better than the originals, so it’s kind of a wildcard. I think Mirage Saloon got a completely new act for act 1 which is good. No more riding on Tails plane, which is good I guess. Haven’t played encore mode in a while, but it changes up the gameplay by making it more challenging with certain paths to get items that you can only get with a certain character, like the Mighty only area in green hill zone.
@@dark_cosmos9897 no, because then you wouldn’t be able to finish it unless you have Knuckles in your encore team. It’s a different layout because that one was only made for Knuckles and characters like Sonic, Mighty and maybe Ray might not be able to complete the act.

Being someone who played Sonic Colours DS when it first came out, sinking a bunch of time into it, getting to the final boss only to not mash quick enough for the final part of the fight, deleting my save file because of it, and playing it through again with even more enjoyment: It's a very unheard game and definitely deserves to be this highly ranked
It's so crazy how you actually fight the Mother Wisp in that version instead of just the Egg Nega Wisp that the Wii version had. DS by far had the better final fight of the two!
Both are great games! I wish Ultimate used the same lives mechanic as before though...
back when i was a kid and couldnt afford the games i wanted, and was limited by what i was allowed, i got sonic colors for the ds even though i wanted it for the wii. overall it was one of the most enjoyable experiences i had and it was one of the few games i actually had the attention to play all the way through.
I still have my current copy of Sonic Colours DS to this day and I love the game, way more than Sonic Colours Ultimate for the switch. I got it early into the game's life and then lost my first cartridge on a vacation, had never gotten past Starlight Carnival Act 1 on that cartridge, and I was DEVASTATED, as that was my all time favourite DS game. A few years later on Christmas, my mum had known how sad I had been about losing the game and managed to get ahold of a second hand cartridge of the game and I will be honest, that christmas I knew what my favourite present was and as soon as I got my ds that day, I worked out how to wipe the old save off of the cartridge and started a new game. It's the cartridge I finally beat the game, collected the chaos emeralds on, beat Mother Wisp and am trying to fully 100% the game still whenever I can play it

I absolutely loved Triple Trouble as a kid. I already loved Sonic as a kid from the cartoons so when I got my game gear with Sonic 2 I was so excited. The box hyped up the presence of my favorite character Tails, only for him to not be playable. Also, the game is ludicrously hard, even after revisiting it when I was older, and that bad ending crushed me. Without a Genesis to play the main series until way later with just standalone Sonic and Knuckles (no Tails), getting Triple Trouble which was much more forgiving, finally let me play as Tails, and had special stages for replay value, I adored that game and played through it so many times trying to get all of the emeralds. While a lot of this is nostalgia, I'll take it over Sonic 2 8-bit any day.

I love how he says Colors has no gimmicks, and yet the Wisps are technically a gimmick.
I think he meant no other gameplay styles or something, but games like Shadow only adds guns, which I say is more of an equivalent to wisps.
Shadow also adds vehicles and ten different endings.

I'm surprised to see the Master System and Game Gear games so low on the list, considering I have pretty fond memories of them, despite their slower speed and "screen crunch" (which they fixed in Triple Trouble by designing it with the Game Gear's specs and resolution in mind).
Ranking them lower than games that fundamentally don't work as intended honestly comes across as petty. They're not fast or overflowing with novelty but they're still well controlling and have quite a lot of replay value for the time through the in stage Emerald hiding places.
Hell, the stage designs being 'basic' is a good thing given how early they were and that players were still learning even basic tech like boss bouncing.
Well, some people do not like to play with Master System nor Game Gear and they prefer NES. That means more 8-bit Sega games for us =D

Just an FYI, Tails CAN fly in the 8 bit games. By holding up and tapping the jump button, Tails is snapped to a grid, in which you use the D-Pad to control him. It's not as great as the Genesis games, but hey- flight!
My favorite game play on heroes is team chaotics because of the exploration of the entire stage which means it will be a bit easier to focus on keys and that's what I love.
In my case, the best advance duo is Cream/Knuckles. It's pretty much Advance 2 Cream but with an auto hitbox around you. Sonic/Cream is also a very good combo for cheesing the final boss.

Sonic 1 on the master system was the first game I ever had. It defined my understanding of platform games and I wish they included it in The sega collections instead of the game gear version as it runs better and the screen size is much better.
It's a travesty that they included the inferior GG port instead of the full size original.

Eh…I disagree. The level design of those games is weak due to screen crunch and hardware limitations, and the graphics and music is lackluster. This especially applies to Sonic Blast and Sonic Chaos. Triple Trouble does deserve a remake, though.
I think Mr. Bandy would agree with me on this: I do not hate these games because they’re on the Master System and Game Gear. I think that they are legitimately bad games. I commend you for finding enjoyment out of them since I could not after giving them so many chances.

fantastic video. The sonic character is part of my childhood as well. The first game i played was Sonic3 on megadrive, and I was so excited on the game startup that I literally (means really literally) got a nosebleed out of over-excitement.
Sonic Advance 3 was by far my most favorite game. I don't understand all the flack it got, but then again, when you're a kid, you're not actively looking for every flaw in a game. Sonic Battle was really fun too. I love when Sega opts to mix up the formula and implement a new mechanic. Awesome video man.

Even as someone who was old enough to be critical and in my mid-teens I loved Sonic Advance 3. And I still think it's the best 2D Sonic game after the classics and Mania. The music is superb, the stage design is excellent and almost every stage is fun to go through for just about all of the character combinations (I think there's like 21 in total). Every world has an overworld, 3 stages and a boss... and the overworld & stages all have different versions of the same song. Honestly, the game's fantastic.
On top of Advance 3 usually being underrated, I'd also say Heroes gets a lot of undeserved flack. Meanwhile, Generations is way overrated. The modern Sonic stages are mostly fine, but even then not nearly as fine as the good 3D games like both Adventure games and Heroes. But the classic stages are just complete garbage. Just meh level design and awful physics & controls.
Also pretty dumb Frontiers ranks so high in this list. It's playable and at times enjoyable. But overal the game just has so many flaws I can't even call it a good game overal. I bought it for full price because I still wanted to support a new 3D Sonic game, but it just simply isn't that good. The boss battles are completely terrible and that's saying something since most bosses in 3D Sonic games are bad. The combat can look cool, but it's just very meh overal. And the controls are just all kinds of bad. They work okay for the open world section, even if kinda meh. But the actual levels are not only just rather poorly designed for most part... even the parts they took from other games are garbage in this game because of the awful controls. And there's almost no stage variety. Music's not very memorable either, etc.
As a person who has played Sonic Colors for the DS before any other console, Colors for the DS was amazing without a doubt. Even though it didn't have cutscenes or extra wisps, it was outstanding for a port for the DS. Also, I'm not certain if this is exactly true but you can fight the Wisps' mother if you collect all the red rings throughout the stages. Either way, Sonic Colors (DS) was a blast to play for my first Sonic game ever played.

I have to disagree with so many of these placements. Who in their right mind ranks Sonic Triple Trouble lower than Sonic 1 GBA? Sonic Spinball Master System/GameGear was better than the 16-bit version which has worse controls & more unfair level design decisions. Sonic 1 Master System is much too low on the list to where it's clear you are biased against the 8-Bit games unfairly, although a few of them were awful.

Sonic colors DS was my childhood gem game. Man, I remember going back into the levels and finding the alternative paths, fighting the final boss only to find the secret final boss…..holt shit….I’ve beat these game so many times…one of my favorites
I actually just got Sonic Colors on the Ds just to check it out after watching this video! So far, it's been amazing!

I don’t understand how Sonic CD made it all the way to 17. You only complained about it. I would think the Advance games would be above it at least.

Either he hates the franchise to the point where the 7th best game is one he can only criticize or this is just how he talks about games in these lists
The reason is because those games have already been talked up a storm so he doesn’t need to sing their praises
You should have mentioned the bad ending of knuckles chaotix, it's weirdly way more iconic than the good ending

I don’t usually comment but I really enjoyed this video. I have some disagreements for sure but very good list overall and I especially LOVE the Mega Collection Museum music in the back as your conclusion. Absolutely loved the free comic they gave you with the game if you explored the museum a little bit. Crazy to see how far Sonic has come since then.

FINALLY someone who enjoyed Sonic Chronicles other than me! Sad to see it released in the way it was, being rather unfinished. but i loved it for what it was!
Sonic Heroes and pretty much all of the GCN titles is what got me into the franchise, though I personally think lost world should be placed lower because of how the story portrayed Tails in the worst possible way. (Specifically turning against Sonic when helping Eggman even though he was fine with it in SA2B)
I haven't played anything after 06 besides Frontiers, but I might check out on a few games after that time considering the praise you've given them.

1:36:48 It doesn’t just change up the colors, it changes the layout as well. Unfortunately not all of the encore mode layouts are better than the originals, so it’s kind of a wildcard. I think Mirage Saloon got a completely new act for act 1 which is good. No more riding on Tails plane, which is good I guess. Haven’t played encore mode in a while, but it changes up the gameplay by making it more challenging with certain paths to get items that you can only get with a certain character, like the Mighty only area in green hill zone.
Isn't the encore mode mirage saloon the knuckles act 1?
@@dark_cosmos9897 no, because then you wouldn’t be able to finish it unless you have Knuckles in your encore team. It’s a different layout because that one was only made for Knuckles and characters like Sonic, Mighty and maybe Ray might not be able to complete the act.
