I thought I was the only one who disliked Press Garden Act 2! It has a lot of cool ideas, but I just don’t like playing it, and you perfectly described why. I still think Mirage Saloon Act 1 is worse, but I guess that doesn’t count here for being a Sky Chase level.

Fun story, Sonic Origins was my first time trying to beat Sonic CD with a good ending... I found the Wacky Workbench generator completely on accident due to being slightly too slow jumping through the crusher and I briefly though the game glitched. As someone who speedruns carnival night act 2, I have some stuff to add to it.
    1. The level is almost entirely linear. There’s only 2 separate paths before the lights out sequence, and they all lead to it. After that, the level is entirely 1 path. The only part where it diverges is at the double red and white barber shop looking things where you can jump through and end up at the end of the second one, which still ends you up on the same path anyway.
2, the level isn’t even that long. It just winds back and forth. Check a level map (either from sonic retro or zone 0) you’ll see about 1/4th of the level is the particle accelerators at the end. The level just takes you back and forth to artificially increase the level length.
    3. Knuckles. If you takes knuckles’ path, the level ends in about 50 seconds. I’m dead serious, check the map again. What’s even FUNNIER is that there isn’t even a boss for knuckles. It’s the only level in sonic 3&k without a boss fight. You can also just brute force your way to sonics path, though you’ll still end up at knuckles end point. There’s even a part at the first particle accelerators at the start of the level where you can just jump to reach sonics path, skipping knuckles section entirely.
Carnival night is THE most unfinished zone in sonic 3 and it really shows if you look at a map.

I dislike it because all the shortcuts are camera-blocked. Unlike the other levels in the game, you can't see any of the shortcuts you're supposed to take unless you already know they're there - such as air-boosting off a ramp during 2D camera with no indication of where you're supposed to boost to reach another ramp so you don't fall into a slow and painful platforming climb...or bouncing off a spring to a long rail section with a cinematic camera, but the shortcut requires you to jump off and homing attack enemies before the camera even STARTS to catch up so you can see what you're doing miles off into the distance.

2:36 they were thinking of inverting the sonic formula. Instead of staying on the top path to have a better time, you’re fighting your way to the bottom. Also, the crusher is indeed hard to notice, but it doesn’t have a bottom. You can see the sprite of the metal bit cut off, leading to the player being curious as to why it is, further leading into the player getting “crushed”.

Personally I thought Bingo Highway from Heroes was worse than Casino Park due to the fact that the table has bottomless pits, and your party members immediately die due to the crap controls and their ai, so you're stuck fending on your own. I couldn't beat Bingo Highway for the longest time as a kid, and only did so by sheer luck. At least with Casino Park, you're given a safety net to get used to the crap controls. I also remember one of the Klagens trapping Tails and flying up, soft-locking me during one point of a play through of the level.

Never understood the beef with Labyrinth Zone, it's really fun to explore because it's fairly open ended when it puts you into giant rooms with several different paths that you can take. The traps are only a problem on the first playthrough so once you learn about them you won't fall for them ever again, it's really that simple. Does nobody play Sonic 1 more than once in their life? If you beat the game at least 10 times you'd easily recognize that Scrap Brain is a much worse zone, I'd even rank LZ above Marble and Spring Yard as well.

      1) it’s at the end of the game so you don’t really go here that often to try new paths
      2) there is nothing to see most of the time the whole stage is blind
      3) this one is personal : what even is going on anyway? Isn’t it supposed to be a night road level?
Then why is there giant holes everywhere? Why do I have to fight to even figure out where I need to go? With labyrinth and marble there is a flow, it’s not a straight line but you get where you are in the whole level. There is no reference point in starlight, everything is just a void with the usual « blind jumps to get up maybe or was I supposed to go left this time oh wait it was down my bad »

I have a video suggestion: The Evolution of Sonic.
Basically, you can go through each Sonic game in chronological order and mention the all the elenents it introduced into the franchise, such as main/playable characters, alternate ports, DLC expansions, major members of the Sonic production thay stayed for quite a while and impacted the franchise, game mechanics, lore elements, prequel/spin-off materials spawning from a specific game, crossovers, etc. You could even include extended Sonic media (movies, comics, etc).
Here are some examples (feel free to add everything I might have missed):
Sonic 1: Sonic, Eggman, high-speed running, animals inside Eggman's robots, alternate ports, Sonic Team.
Sonic 2: Tails, Death Egg Robot, Silver Sonic, Chaos Emeralds, Super Sonic, Tornado, alternate endings, cutscenes.

  • @indigothecat
    @indigothecat ปีที่แล้ว +4

For me, in Sonic Frontiers, my least favorite stage was probably 1-2. Not because the stage is hard, but because to get the S rank on your level completion time, you have to take a very specific path, and normally you'd think you'd have to master the aerial sections early to do it. Nope. Sonic actually moves slower in the air, even with player input boosts and the air boost rings (and I didn't know this at the time). It was the only stage where I had to look up a guide to complete it in the S-rank time, and I nearly stopped playing for awhile because I couldn't figure it out, lol. To put a stage with such tight time requirements for the S rank so early on seemed petty. 😅
For Sonic Adventure 2, I actually really liked Mad Space, even if the gravity mechanic was frustrating at times, though once you learn where the springs and launchers are to get you from area to area, it becomes less frustrating, lol. As for the worst SONIC stage in that game, it's tough to say cause there are only 6 (not counting the last stage of the game), but I think I agree with Crazy Gadget. The switching gravity sections really kinda slow Sonic down a lot, and screw up the controls. An easy fix to that would be to have the Camera rotate fully along with Sonic, but I suppose that wouldn't be as trippy.

Must be in the minority for this one. I only had Sonic 1, 2, 3, and Sonic and Knuckles when I was little so those are what I will address.
I actually loved Labyrinth Zone. I loved the preciseness of the platforming, I loved the music, I loved how slow Sonic moved underwater. I found it very zen. I never had a problem with the traps---some of them were annoying, sure, but altogether the zone just put me in a chill mood, and I liked the challenging twist on the boss. It was Scrap Brain Zone Act 2 I hated. Not only did the entire level feel like a gauntlet of death traps, but the music was straight up auditory caffeine and made me feel like I had to rush, so I ended up running into traps, enemies, and fell to my death way more often than I needed to.
For me Oil Ocean was the zone in Sonic 2 that always made me consider whether I really wanted to keep going. I hated the music (felt like it was mocking me for some reason I can't explain), I hated the over-industrialized, polluted setting, and it felt like I couldn't take five steps without getting hit by one of those damn octopi or seahorses. By Metropolis I was used to the unfair enemy placement and it at least had vibrant colors and jammin' music.
I'm cheating a bit on Sonic 3 as I never beat it when I was little. Yes, because of the Barrel of Doom. But Carnival Night had bright colors, cheery music, and honestly was fun. I loved every part of Sonic 3 until I hit the infamous dead end. Marble Garden was my least favorite then, as it felt like a modern Scrap Brain. After the breathtaking zoom-to-end of Hydrocity, all of the crushers and endless parade of spike traps and spiked enemises forcing me to take the level slow and steady felt like a slog. Now? Launch Base Zone is definitely my least favorite, mostly for the same reasons I hate Scrap Brain, but there's not a single level in Sonic 3 I hate.
Sonic and Knuckles, on the other hand? This one, I agree with you on. I will take a thousand Barrel of Dooms over Sandopolis Zone Act 2. You pretty much nailed everything infuriating about it. This level is pure suffering. And the music isn't even enjoyable to listen to. The boss is relatively simple but by the time I get to it I'm strung out and that makes me sloppy. Arguably the worst of the classic Sonic levels.

It's one of those levels where you have to do a full lap around the stage, which is a fine enough concept, it's just that the level has a bit too much of QTEs. Still don't think it's a bad level though, just think that it's the actual weakest level in the game, including the DLC stages.

@@eduardoaugusto9206 it’s also got those switches you have to stomp on multiple times which are annoying with unleashed’s slippery movement, and combined with ice physics and enemies shooting at you it’s real obnoxious in this level. You really think running through the shamar city is less interesting than this?

@@t-bone2145 Must be a me thing, but I am actually not against ice physics. I know that they throw you off balance given the controls you're used to, but I don't think they are terrible. Also the enemies aren't problematic either, just stay on the move and you won't get shot.
Shamar doesn't have too many interesting setpieces aside from canyons with rails, the monuments and temple like structures are neat, but they're all background scenarios :/

Tidal Plant in triple trouble was a labyrith.
Tunnels that trick you into going to the beginning, music that gets stuck in your head even if your not playing the game (it's a good song tho)Tidal Plant 2 was the embodiment of pain for me, Overall Tidal Plant 1 and 2 is like that death barrel from Sonic 3, if you know what to do like that death barrel, Tidal Plant is easy and trains you for Atomic Destroyer (the final showdown) Tidal Plant 3 is fine however, it is a good fight I enjoyed it as Sonic and/or Tails. As for Sonic Chaos KILL ME it is the electric egg 3, The eggwalker literally broke my confidence, I tried you to bounce on him he throws a gemini laser from Mega Man that goes way too fast, Slippery Controls made me go through hell, once your done with that if your on the game gear version, YOU HAVE TO PRECISELY KNOW HOW TO ATTACK HIM. I'd rather put a rusty nail in my head than actually do that fight again.

I've come to love Crazy Gadget, especially as I got older compared to my first time as a very young kid - in fact I think the concept and layout is fine - but having most controls be set to one button really became noticeably bad for me in that level compared to all other ones.
As a kid, I just got used to it, but when revisiting the game it definitely made me wonder why the controls were set up the way they did (fyi I played SA2 on gamecube; I don't know if the controls were different in the dreamcast version). I'd go up to the gravity control and roll instead of flipping the switch, so I had to slow down enough to not roll to flip the lever properly. There's this one little section you have to ring dash or fall into a pit but would roll and die instead. And these controls got more frustrating in the big puzzle at the end. And out of all the stages, getting the magnetic shield for rings in this stage was something I wanted to avoid at all costs in order to clear certain sections. It isn't that great to have to slow down in order for you to get the right prompt of what you wanted to accomplish when it should've been an almost instantaneous input. I wonder how much easier it would be to get through the level if rolling, ring dashing, and pressing the lever all weren't the same button.

Flame Core can be a difficult level to get through. But one thing I truly love about that level is the music during the first section. That is one of my favorite sonic soundtracks.
