History of Power Rangers is a series where Linkara looks at every season of the show and offers critical analysis!
The History of Power Rangers travels to Reefside, where the Rangers are powered by genocide to fight off scientists who don’t know how to hold test tubes or who mistake their experiments for Mountain Dew.

Trent and Kira are one of my biggest frustrations in all of Power Rangers. Dude, I gotta say, the fighting spirit theory, let alone tommys character as a whole this season, pretty spot on, everything you said about him from tommy being trapped in his suit, to battling his old past ranger suits, all makes sense, it even makes sense as we've seen in forever red he's still active in ranger duties, not really in suit except if he needed to be, but it makes sense, he probably felt more of ranger now more than ever after literally 10 years of being a ranger, fighting evil and everything, even forgetting that before all that, he was a normal person, he forgot he was tommy Oliver, that's who he truly is, the powers and the suits are just what he use to help fight evil

Dino Thunder really hits a lot harder now that you realize this was his final series. Sure, he still made three cameos afterward; the first was the second crossover with SPD and Dino Thunder (even though he stays morphed the whole time since he could not fly back to New Zealand at the time, but it's still the thought that counts), then infamous legendary battle, and finally dimensions in danger marked his last appearance. The reason Trent gets the stego, looses it and then gets it back is because in Abaranger its a lot more complicated
In the Sentai, the Mecha are properly sentient, regularly having conversations (in japanese) with the rangers and each other.

The Zords were actually full sentient and could talk (making it better they weren’t destroyed there and just went back to Dino Earth and yes that was a thing) and the second time the Stego went with Abarekiller (the White Ranger) it’s because he liked the power of being Killer-Oh instead of just being a surfboard for Aberan-Oh (the Megazords)
Regarding the Trent losing his powers and having to get them back from the clone. That very plot line would happen the very next year in Kamen Rider where in the fourth Rider started off under the control of one of the villains because the powers came from sealing monsters in to cards and the Ace card used to transform him had a weaker seal to cause the monster within to take control. Then the card broke and the monster was freed allowing then young hero control of himself again and he helped the tertiary Rider to seal the monster once again and this time allowing the kid full control.

I don't know what made me think about this and return to the video a month later. But it's interesting to think that Lothor's fate was ultimately unwritten. He got put in a jar, maybe he got destroyed with the island or sent away to rot. But this was the major villain of Ninja Storm and a family member to multiple people in the cast, and no resolution. Consider that Dino Thunder had to constantly adapt to the ongoing Sentai, this was New Zealand's first crossover attempt, AND Power Rangers SPD ended up doing 2 crossovers. I think they at least had Lothor on standby as a possible second crossover that just didn't come together because the Sentai footage didn't make that easy.
Also weird to think that if Lothor's actor was alive past 2018, that whole Beast Morphers/Venjix thing would have led to very odd speculation threads and videos. Just entire online conversations about the possibility of Lothor returning for Dino Fury.

Simply put, originally, the Black Ranger was not intended to be Tommy, but rather a brand new character who would have the connection to Mercer and become the Rangers' teacher and mentor. At some point, it was decided to make the character a previous Ranger, and the decision was made to bring in Tommy to capitalize on his popularity. Anyone else notice how Trent wore darker colours on top of this white clothes during the times he was struggling with the evil side of his Ranger powers? Who says this can't be subtle?

I’m just going to come out and say it: Dino Thunder is a bit overrated. The rangers were high school students, their powers were from dinosaurs, and we were bringing back Tommy, it really felt like a rehash of MMPR, but it was a rehash done correctly. Plus, even though there were some parallels and similarities to mmpr, there were still enough differences for it to be its own thing.
Then again, I do remember another reviewer of Power Rangers labelling Dino Thunder as “a legacy series done right”, and it makes sense. So overall, even though this might not be an all-time favourite for me like it seems to be for a lot of other people, but I still enjoy it.
Oh, and in case you really want to know, to me the most overrated PR series is RPM.

I feel like Elsa and Zeltrax kinda break the streak of the whole “evil villain generals who are still likable and charming”. Now, don’t get me wrong, they are still enjoyable to watch and I like them. But when you compare them to the duke orgs from Wild Force or even Lothor’s nieces from Ninja Storm, these two really come off as less humorous and more straightforward evil. I just thought that I’d like to point that out.

"Dino Thunder"'s plot is definitely...frustrating; it's really quite good at setting up interesting Arcs and Mysteries, but quite frequently fumbles their resolutions in frustrating or unsatisfying ways; the whole Smitty/Zeltrax thing especially stands out to me, I remember being REALLY interested in it back in the day only to feel let down when it turns out to be Some Guy whose motives for hating Tommy feel Foggy at best and moreover whose existence we only learn of literally just in time for the show to reveal him as Zeltrax.
So it should tell you something about the strength of the show's Characters that I STILL rank it as one of my five favorite seasons of the show. Basically every major character in the series feels Believable and Engaging thanks to a combination of above-average dialogue-writing and acting from the cast, and the series consistently does a very good job of finding fun and interesting ways to play them off of each other, ESPECIALLY in the case of the Lead Rangers where, for once, it feels like it takes a realistic amount of time for their friendships to really settle with each other. I also like the Ranger Suits a LOT more than Linkara, indeed I think they might be my favorite Dino-themed suits of the entire franchise.

Thanks for making these, Linkara, they're some of my favorite videos just in general, like a nice blend of retrospective and the fun/good aspects of nostalgia
Plus I love rewatching them when I'm trying to go to sleep, it feels like I tired myself out doing something fun like a kid again 😂🙏😇

My first and absolute favorite season of the show. Conner, Ethen, and Kira are some of my favorite characters and rangers of all time, and my exposer to what a teenager could be like and how one can grow, especially Ethen as I was a nerd growing up myself. Trent too became my favorite Ranger ever for his character arc and because he was a fellow artist.
And Tommy. I doubt I’m alone in this experience, but because this was my first season, I did not have the context of MMPR or anything else involving his character, so this was my first exposure, and I remember being…fascinated. I saw him as this almost mysterious figure, a veteran with an intense past that we only glimpsed (because I was very small and dumb child when I saw this so I somehow didn’t connect there were shows before this) every so often, and that he knew so much more then any of the other characters to the point where I wanted to know more. Both as his time as a ranger, and his past in relation to the other characters in this show.
I just really love this season.

This is awesome, I never expected this on such a random day lmao
Edit: Kira being surprised by her fighting ability in my opinion was to show that every team would get a baseline civilian power, agility and slightly enhanced strength and speed so they can keep up with their skills outside ranger form

Good to see this back. When Dino Thunder originally came out it was the first series I'd watched in years (I checked out early on in Turbo, oddly before the veteran Rangers left) and yeah, I came back for Tommy... and stayed for Kira too, which is apparently a common response. Jason David Frank will always be my hero. May the Power protect him forever.

This might be controversial, but quite frankly, I think SPD is highly underrated as a season! Especially in the Disney era! Can’t wait for that video! The story of Sky is great! He wanted to make his father proud and that’s why he was so adamant about training!

I forgot to mention in my previous comments Linkara-AtopTheFourthWall that your original dialogue when you did your original videos back then that you've remembered your lines which is fantastic, and add new materials to this new video which is great. I'm looking forward to the next new video of S.P.D. and Mystic Force. I know you will take your time making these new videos, but I can wait. You're doing a great job.

Ngl, it might be "first in the series bias," but i really liked Dino thunder, and it actually got me into the other seasons that came before and after it. I remember the only seasons of power rangers I didn't enjoy were alien force and samurai, though I don't really remember why. I haven't seen any power rangers seasons past megaforce.

R.I.P JDF. Now on to more silly stuff. When looking back at "Lost and Found in Translation" I can't help but be reminded of the episode "Delusional Imports" from Season 2 of Akibaranger where the villains create a delusion where Super Sentai was actually an import of the American show "Powerful Rangers". It is all kinds of cringe and hilarious and is the source of the "HEY SUSHI" meme that you may have seen floating around the fandom. As for Dino Thunder itself it's been a few years since I've seen it. I remember watching it just for Tommy but it was a good show over all, public domain music aside. But yes it will be just a tad awkward seeing it these days after JDF's passing, especially Fighting Spirit. But hoooo boy will I have a few words to say when we get to S.P.D, mostly ragging about the flaws of the Kalish era. But until then May the Power protect you all.
