I just came across this interview of Brenda Russell. I'm glad I did. I have been a HUGE FAN since 1979 during the So Good, So Right era. Last time I saw Brenda perform was at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood in the 2000's. Gave a great show. Love me some Brenda Russell. Her last album released was in 2004. I read a story that another album is coming. Please hurry with that. 🙂
Donna Summer...she is in a class by herself. Her voice is definitely "incomparable".
    I miss her live performances.
I'm a HUGE Donna Summer fan.
I still play Brenda's and Donna's music catalog at least 6 times a year.

Both songs deserved to have become bigger hits. They are two incredible songs that I hope will experience a resurgence.

Dinner with Gershwin and State of Independance are two songs that a frequently listen to since their original release. Love Brenda and Donna Summer. Thank you so much for the unscripted with Ms. Russell. She deserves her flowers. Such a wonderful singer and musician.

"Dinner With Gershwin" was, and still, is one of my go-to songs in 2023. The musicality of the music itself is just very original and quirky and infectious to hear. Heck, I play the instrumental sometimes. Of course, Donna's vocals are stellar. She delivers it in perfect vocal character for the song. Going from the low range to the mid-range of her voice. There definitely was not a song like it on the radio at the time. Even today.

Brenda, I have loved you since your first album! “So good, so right” & “ If only for one night” you had me in love with your voice and songwriting from then on. Your “Dinner with Gershwin” is one of those songs that exemplifies the towering contributions of your work. You, & Laura Nyro are my favorite singer songwriters and I am so grateful to you for the joy your music brings to the world. Donna Summer was amazingly gifted, and your unscripted tribute was truly inspiring. I just love you Brenda, “If you love”, & “Rainbow” are my favorite songs of yours❤

"Dinner With Gershwin" and "Think It Over" are my favorite tunes as the songwriter; "Way Back When" and "Night Train To Leningrad" are my favorite tunes as a vocalist...❤

I could have heard she wrote "If Only For One Night..." and I would have been sold. But she also did 'Piano in the Dark' and 'Get Here.' I knew about Donna Summer's Dorchester and Mission Hill connections in Boston but I'm just finding out Brenda was a Beantown girl too. So cool.

Piano In The Dark is a stunning song and I love Brenda's version of Dinner With Gershwin as much as Donna's. We know Donna had an awesomely powerful voice but Brenda is massively underrated as a singer. Her Get Here album is full of beautiful songs.

Her first solo album self titled is a masterpiece. If only For One night, God Less You, Way Back When, You're Free... classic LP

I always thought Brenda Russell didn't like Donna's version of the song. I liked Dinner With Gershwin because there was nothing else4 on the radio like it at the time. A very classy song.

I admire Christian's effort in interviewing musicians like Brenda....bottom line, these are the opinions that REALLY matter when we have conversations about how impressive people like Donna are. TH-cam allows anyone to say their piece...and a poster's opinion is always subjective, because we didnt know Donna from a man on the Moon. But when Brenda Russell says "she could sing her ass off", you have to believe that...BECAUSE ITS BRENDA RUSSELL, NOT YOUR NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR!

@@unscriptedconversationswch5553 Christian, next time you bump into some sort of "event" in NYC, that involves music and/or the people we celebrate in the industry, LET ME KNOW!...you asked me I was willing to come to "something" in your neck of the woods (on another post a little less than a year ago, I think it was)...and because my responses/notifications were turned off, I never got it until I realized Id turned off those notices and turned them back on. Yea, I was annoyed...because I saw the forum you put on at the Apollo with Nona Hendryx, Kathy Sledge, Anita Pointer..and Rochelle Fleming...and thats DEFINITELY something I would've attended with enough notice. So, feel free to give me a heads up in the future...thanks.
