    @ about 5:40 you are surprised to see that they didn't penetrate near as far as you would liked them to.
    But little do lots of people understand that this feature is what makes these big bore guns so effective.
    The target must absorb 100% of the energy from the bullet to stop it.
    This may help to illustrate the point: I took my new 45/70 over to my brother in law's house.
    So he gets his 8mm mauser and we set up an old refrigerator sideways to us.
    He shot first and we went to look. He said look at the power of my 8 mm, it came out the other side.
    So I shot and the refrigerator fell down. The bullet had stopped inside of the refrigerator for the 45/70.
    I told him: Point being...your dear ran off wounded. Mine was knocked down.

      One round knocked a full size fridge over ON ITS SIDE? That's pretty hard to believe..

    • @rollingthunder915
      @rollingthunder915 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Pew Tube - Why? You hit it near the top with a bullet that expands properly and you have plenty of energy left, after initial penetration, to knock a 150-200 block over. I used to hunt with .43 Spanish. I never got a refrigerator door to put on my wall, but I knocked a few deer DOWN, and destroyer less meat in the process.

    I think the Bushmaster went a tad further because it gained slightly less velocity from the Ranch's 16.5" barrel compared to the longer Marlin. The 45-70 'exploded' more upon impact. IMO.

    The idea is the full pressure is in the intial hit.
    The 7.72 combat rifle rounds and the 5.56 are made for the puncturing effect. A 45-70 is meant more for the heart stopping and bone crushing. (Another way of putting it is swiss cheese making vs getting hit by super sonic hydraulic press.) The former you might keep running as you leak blood. A 4570 though gonna either stop your heart or its gonna cause brain hemoraging damage on a scale that will make getting hit with a proper military issue weapon seem like a mercy killing.

      The .45-70 is a traditionally blackpowder cartridge (70 grains of black powder) so with smokeless it's usually got about 50 grains which is similar to a fully loaded .450 Bushmaster or .458 SOCOM, the modern rounds are shorter as they were built around higher density powder like how 38SPL and 9x19mm have about the same power and same powder load, the 9x19 casing is smaller as it doesn't need to be so big with modern powder. However since .45-70 has leftover case capacity now and modern rifles are stronger it's possible to load it hotter, like my .44 Magnum rounds that I make for my Henry but would not put in my revolver.

    its not really a fair test. the 450 bushmaster is loaded at around 38,500 psi. most factory ammo: winchester for the 45-70 is safe in all guns including trapdoor which has a psi of 28,000.

    Ok, for all the hunters here...
    This video got me thinking. With the way that lead broke up, wouldn't it scatter lead all through the meat? Or did it break up because of how hard the plates are when stacked like that? I mean, they say to wash your hands after touching lead bullets so you don't end up with lead poisoning, seems if these rounds broke up like that in an animal, you may be eating small chucks of lead.
    And sorry if I sound like an idiot. I only shoot targets and carry for self defense. I do not hunt, so never thought of this stuff before.

      @WHOTEEWHO  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah the bullets sometimes fragment, but not near as much here. When i do rwcover a bullet from a deer it is ussually in one big slug. Will be catching these bullets in water in another video this week - that will show a similar result

We was hired to keep people off a rich persons land during hunting season. You could see the orange vests, hats, etc all around walking into the other fields and woods. Too many guns looking to go BANG in a small area in my opinion. So I just stay home. lol

      I could write a book on being leaded, I lived in Kellogg, ID as a child, the foliage was burned back by pollution for a half mile or more from town in every direction. The Bunker Hill lead smelter and other smelters ran unabated 24/7, I am now in my late sixties, I have cast lead and worked in a lead smelter. My lead content is 11.5 micro grams per thousand parts, you on the other hand are more than likely in the 5-7 micro grams per thousand parts, possibly less. I have never shown any of the problems the medical community threatens people with. Lead is toxic to a point, but so is Teflon, stainless steel, cast iron and most every other item on this planet. Humans are all different and have different tolerances, therefore, we all react different to our surroundings. Continue the way you are, but don't get to uspset about being around lead, you probably don't want to eat it, but if you ingest a fragment it won't kill you for many years, lead poisoning requires months or even years of contact to be harmful to an adult human.

    Have to remember that .450 Bushmaster is loaded to 38,500 psi, whereas the Winchester .45-70 is loaded to something less than 21,000 psi in deference to Trapdoor Springfields. The .45-70 can be loaded to .450 Marlin pressure in a Marlin 1895. Not with my shoulder behind it though.

      Agree mostly on what Jack said on this. Yeah the 45-70 has a longer barrel. And the 45-70 have more lead and more gun powder and bigger and make a bigger hole and probably will do more damage. But shooting calibers this big or on hunting purposes I am sure the animal would not know the difference if it got hit from a hunter from using a 450 BM or 45-70. This is one thing and it appears this video also proves it, that a longer barrel or a bigger caliber or what ever does not always mean better or more velocity or more knock power etc....

      Funny how so many butt hurt people that own a 45/75 are. They act like its a car race or something. Off the shelf I'm grabbing the 450 every time. Not that the 45-75 is weak but to get it to full potential requires reloading, extra time effort etc. The 450 is ready rock right out of the stock box and it won with a shorter 16 inch barrel, just think if the 450 had a 20" barrel would hit even harder.

  • @shananagans5

    I think the .45-70 will go through more but the Bushmaster will open up more.

Then the 350 Legend and the 450 Bushmaster come on the scene and are drawing my eye. I can use one lower and switch off between the two is an appealing arrangement in the AR configuration. Throwing in the number of States limiting hunting Deer to straight walled cartridges I'm getting that desire to put together another AR lower just for those two caliber uppers.

  • @JohnnyCirucci

    That was fun to watch and answered the questions I had. I hope we all realize here that this is apples and oranges. What the 450 does is put 45/70 potency into a fast and maneuverable system such as the Stoner (what Hollywood calls 2 letters and 2 numbers I won't write here) and with almost no extra needs such as a proprietary magazine, etc.
    In that, it is hands-down the superior "big bore" cartridge.

    Big bullets that carry a lot of energy, but both bullet are made to dump energy quickly to drop targets fast without over penetration. They'll shake that table, but won't go far. I have a Bushmaster AR chambered in .450 Bushmaster with a 20" barrel. Same type of results when using soft point ammo. With Lehigh Defense Xtreme Penetrator the .450's a monster. I've dropped 250-300 lbs. hogs at 200 yds with complete pass through with it. I will have that Ruger dangit. A perfect bush gun that can still reach out and touch something out to 200 yds easily. just a piece of information, thr 45-70 commercial rounds are loaded a lot lighter than modern firearms can handle. Hand loads for a modern rifle are significantly more powerful, safely. They do this because so many of the old winchesters are still in use and they don't want to blow them up.

    Normally I would say nothing, but your .450 BM had a jacketed SOFT point. The 45-70 had a jacketed HOLLOW POINT (that's what the ammo box said). Since hollow points are velocity based, the longer barrel of the 45-70 almost guaranteed that said expansion would reduce penetration. Just an observation. Thanks for the vid.
