SW-Motech Bellypan Install - CB1000R

  • The Honda CB1000R is a handsome machine, with an exposed underbelly and paint made of cottage cheese.
    Thankfully SW-Motech have got the situation covered with their delicious aluminium bellypan.
    No plastic body panel here, thank you very much!!
    Join me as I fit this 100% metal Bellypan to my 2020 CB1000R and finally provide some protection for the butter soft paint on the oil sump. Sadly for me, this is a case of closing the gate long after the horse has already bolted and taken the paint with it! But better late than never eh?!
    Naturally just like all ‚quick jobs‘ this simple install was plagued with a little bit of drama, once again thanks to the bean counters at Honda. Watch on to find out more!!
    As always, the Bellypan was provided free of charge by SW-Motech, but no money has changed hands for good reviews.
    The Bellypan is available in silver and black.
    Find it here: sw-motech.com/en/bike/HONDA/C...

    I placed a black SW Motech belly pan after I had Header pipes ceramic coated for $200, they look polished and yum from the previous discolored state and run down look. I swapped all bolts and nuts with Titanium ones. I swapped the front disc floating pins with gold colored titanium ones as well ! On my 2019 model Candy red color 👍

    I had the same annoyance with my front mudguard on my Honda CB1000R, being too short. I got myself a “Fenda Extenda” from Pyramid Plastics in the UK. Worth every penny in my experience. Good video again! 👍🏻

    A trick I was shown for bolts that feel their going to round, is to take a brass drift (or even a steel one if that's all you have) and give it a tap with a hammer on the end of the bolt. Sometimes steel bolt and threaded alloy parts bind and hitting it gently can break that enough to get it loose.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  ปีที่แล้ว

      That was some of the thinking behind me bashing the bolts with a hammer. Then being so soft that they went out of shape was just an added bonus!! 😅

    My response to "bike getting coated in shite" was refuse to wash it. I own an 2018 MT-09 & first few weeks I washed it almost daily. Then storm Arwen arrived & destroyed my garage & even succeeded in blowing over the bike causing 2 tiny dents in the tank. Result being, never been washed since Oct last year, & I'm even struggling to secure the effort to maintain it. Would love to upgrade it to newer but health preventing employment so finance also impossible to obtain.

    • @AndyManCam

    Good to see you Andy. It’s funny I never buy a naked bike and think “What that needs is some plastic bits to cover it up.” Still many seem to do just that. So what do I know 😂

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  ปีที่แล้ว

      Mostly i do agree with you! But that little area under the pipes always looks a little tidier imho when it’s closed up a tiny bit. And I’d never put a plastic panel on there! 😂. Same with the dash. The clocks always look a bit rubbish and unfinished (ever since they stopped using real clocks and stick cheap plastic housings around the lcd/tft displays. Very lazy styling) so the little Ally screen i have is just perfect to hide an ugly oversight!

    Useless front fenders are a HUGE pet peeve of mine. It seems like the only company that actually understands the purpose of a fender these days is Royal Enfield. I put a Pyramid Fenda Extenda on my Versys. Even the Extenda is shorter than I would like. One day I got back from a ride, and found that somewhere I had ridden through wet, white, traffic paint without knowing it. That was a PITA to clean off the underside of the bike, but it would have been even worse w/o the Extenda. SInce then I have made my own radiator guard using aluminum window screen to ensure the holes are small enough to catch blobs of paint instead of letting them through to the radiator.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same here. If they put a tiny fender on, the least they could do is back it up with a radiator guard 🤦🏻‍♂️

It makes the engine better looking than stock paint, it holds up to 500 degrees so it is long lasting as well 👍 it costs only $20 !!

    Hi Andy, how would you compare this bike to your previous fz1n?

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The overriding improvement of the CB over the FZ1 is the fuelling. Waaaay smoother and more enjoyable in the Honda. Also there’s more torque down low so the power Delivery is much thicker and smoother. The quality of finish is far superior on the FZ1 though. Nuts and bolts on the Honda are furry and dull on the Honda after 2 years whereas the FZ1 still had shiny and not rounded bolts after 14 years. The suspension on the FZ1 is also better from the factory. The rear shock on the CB is a horrible piece of crap.

    Bloody hell. That’s a bit of a bugger about those sump bolts. 😢
    Definitely worth tearing yourself to some good tools. At worst, they will last you a lifetime and they help reduce the likelihood of rounding off the Cheesium made parts we all sadly begin to see across all the brands.

    Hi Andy, always nice to see you show and test out fancy pants stuff that I can consider for my CB1000R. A few observations on this one. Looks nice and matches other bits well but I wonder if it’ll catch and trap more crud than it’ll stop? Not sure about your comments on bolt steel quality. They’ll have a material optimised for their purpose and perhaps if you’d used the Joker in the first place all would have been well? Ie about the tool fit rather than bolt steel. Finally, not sure that your zealous use of thread lock is best. It’s very rare for correctly torqued screws to come loose and you may just be creating more stuck screw headaches for yourself. I think Thread lock is generally for safety critical fixings. Sorry about what looks like a long whinge, it’s only because I care ;-)

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As long as it catches the crud BEFORE it’s worn more cream cheese Paint off the front of my engine, I’m happy to clean it out! Thankfully there aren’t really any nooks or crannies with this Bellypan design. Flat sides, open in the bottom, open in the corners. So should be easy enough to rinse anything through with the jetwash. I agree that it’s possible that with the better spanner, maybe the bolts would have come loose first go. The only thing that reinforces my feeling that they’re just incredibly soft is that this has never happened before and I’ve had the same tools for almost 20 years! As for the threadlock, i‘m just going with what SW tells me! Plus I’ve actually had correctly torqued bolts come loose in the past, so I’d rather err on the side of caution. Parts falling off at 120mph on the Autobahn is not funny! It’s also only medium strength and I’ve learned to be VERY sparing!! 😉

    Hi Andy - I happen to have the same Honda CB1000r, SC80 altough mine is from 2018. I wanted to put on a Bellypan and a better Front Fender forever. As it seems you did both of it (I somehow remember you had an aluminium Fender on it at some point) However, if I look at the parts at the SW-Motech website this Stuff seems to be for the new 2021 model and not the older SC80. Did you somehow get adapted parts or are they just fitting anyway because they didnt change anything relating to bolting positions?

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The lower parts get the worst of the blast. You can see that by the way the paint on the sump has been stripped off. Due to the laws of physics the spray from the wheel at the lowest points is being thrown at the engine and pipes almost head on, therefore meaning most damage. Further up the pipes and engine and the spray is being thrown from the front wheel at ever decreasing angle and therefore ever decreasing potential for damage. Plus stonechips and the like will mostly occur at low level. Ultimately, even a bikini fairing still provides more protection than no fairing at all.

The corners, right behind where the black part of the bellypan now is, were considerably worse than all the rest of the pipes.
