    Modded R owner here. I've raced a few friend's BMWs including a V8 E92. You will take the BMW no problem from a roll. From a dig in a drag that's up in the air. The Rs, both S60 and V70, haldex awd system does NOT like to launch.
    As for the further mods, the intercooler is the biggest upgrade you can do for these cars. The factory setup is super restrictive and makes no sense.

    The sound is amazing. Can’t wait to get mine back to the dyno. Were you able to get your boost level and air/fuel ratio at WOT? On my 1998 S70 T5, my AFR was at 12.1. Some people say that I was too lean and others said I was too rich. Either which way, I got a new MAF(from FCP) to install before the next pull. Can’t wait for Friday’s pull.

    Nice to see the before & after comparison of the Hilton tune but please for the love of God stop calling our R's an 'M3 Killer'. You need to lose a few hundred pounds, upgrade a number of parts under the hood, reconfigure the traction control beyond the undocumented "five taps" and completely reprogram the Haldex - which no one has been able to do. The simple fact is that our cars are GT's. They always have been and always will be. I've driven a few 1,200 mile trips and never felt a bit uncomfortable. They were made to keep us relaxed in the worst road conditions. To suggest they'll ever have better performance than an M3 - which is at home on a track - is wildly inaccurate. Sleeper? You bet. But an M3 Killer? Not by a long shot.

    • @ShiftingLanes
      @ShiftingLanes  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It’s the whole point of this build series. We will beat an E46 M3 eventually. You don’t need to lose weight and I’m going to prove that. Take an enthusiast wagon and make it faster than a sports car. That’s the goal of my car. It does not refer to yours or all other Rs. Hence the “our” in nearly every title.

    • @Mike-cd7bj
      @Mike-cd7bj 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think you're both right. These cars weren't meant to be driven on a track all day, but at the same time it's not for anyone to say "don't try to beat an M3 because that's not what these are for". So? Do what you like with the car

    This will take the M3 as it is on a straight now. But you need to reduce the body roll and get slotdrilled brake discs and good pads. Then you just might beat it on the track too! =) Brakes that dont overheat, firmer suspension and some bushings should help you a lot.... and get rid of spare tire etc.

  • @youtubasoarus

    Nice torque gains! :D Love it. That's what you'll feel off the line, likely noticeable. The HP you'll feel up to speed. But 20hp probably won't be noticeable. So when are you getting a bigger turbo, injectors, fuel pump, coils? ;) In all seriousness though, if you're going for the sway bar upgrade i'd recommend staying away from the IPD ones. I upgraded mine and in less than 2 years they are rusting! O__O They're nice and beefy but they look terrible already. If I had known that i'd have had them re-powder coated thicker, though they did improve cornering. :(
    Also, poly bushings do a lot to tighten things up on these old girls. Mine sharpened up after some of those upgrades (top mount, lower toque mount on tranny, top bar inserts, sub frame inserts) Still have to do control arms, rear sub frame bushings etc.

    • @ShiftingLanes
      @ShiftingLanes  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks! Yea the torque is looking very nice. The HP is definitely noticeable near the 5k mark TBH when compared to before. Once the IC, intake, and piping, with tune, are all on then I think it will be truly noticeable.
      Good shout on the sways and bushings. Will keep that in mind, thanks!

  • @Stale_Mahoney

    the sound of a engine wanting more than a estate life :) those graphs looked really healthy, the gap in power shows from down low all the way, i know it feels amazing as i have detuned mine that had a tune when i bought it, the midrange is so underestimated when people throw down numbers. will be interesting seeing when you get intercooler and rerouted the housings what it will do, have you considered a IPD turbo upgrade? am thinking about it myself af the IPD is a direct bolt on ceramic ball bearing turbo with a bit bigger exhaust port so it will breath allot bether at higher rpms and make more power on the same boost figures, and it's not really any slower spooling up than the stock one.

    I honestly wouldn’t recommend an E85 tune. It’ll ruin the point of the car being a sort of useable sleeper. You’ll make more power than you think with the intercooler and meth kit and you won’t really need more.

    • @20CKY01
      @20CKY01 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The ECM can be programmed to act like a flex fuel car. I've run it in my R with pretty conservative timing advance, but I have a Aeromotive fuel pump and 550cc injectors to supply the extra 30% more fueling required. With just a upgraded down pipe the car made 285 awhp. The R is not an M3 and it won't be. This project should have been aimed at the S4.

    • @dudeshark2471
      @dudeshark2471 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Justin Lee that’s both wrong and beside the point. The car can easily be compared to the M3, idk what it is about the internet and putting it on a pedestal but it’s not that good of a car.
      As far as the flex fuel or E85 tune, it doesn’t matter. Now your cold start ups are going to be a pain, you’ve got to have a regular full E85 tune to see worthwhile benefits, meaning you now have to hunt for it at specific gas stations, oh and your fuel consumption sky rockets. The cool factor of the R is that it’s a sort of an all in one package, yet you completely change that when you go to E85 and it becomes a halfway race car.

      The DP and exhaust have been upgraded to about as big as you can go. Highest quality made. It’s not the exhaust, there are a lot of other factors at play holding it back like 93 pump gas, OEM injectors/IC/intake, etc.

      ShiftingLanes Fair enough then, I didn’t realize the turbo back was done. I had one of these years ago, and tuned it before I did the exhaust 3.5” dp, 3” catback. After the exhaust and downpipe, it felt like as big of a gain as the tune; do to the order I did things. Nice project, love the channel 👍

    Don't worry, most BMW M3s will end up killing themselves soon as the warranty expires.
    you can go kill your own volvo in a few years once you start getting "anti skid service required."
    j/k

    You're not really going to kill BMW's are you? Probably a little of an over-reaction...

      It’s the whole point of the build. To beat an E46 M3.
