    So the M3 has been sold but that left Chad without a ride until the Lexus is up and running. The only solution? Relieve Gregson of his Volvo V70R and see what all this Volvo fuss is about. This is the Shifting Lanes Review of our Volvo V70R and it features none of Gregson.

    Station wagon are actually really common here in Sweden, and are still selling well.
    Not only do they sell well they are the most popular type of vehicle here.
    To be more specific the inline five found in the V70nR (or as you Americans call it, V70R P2) is a B5254T4.
    A Volvo V70n with a manual transmission is not rare here in Sweden, but the R is.

  • @ryanloos5483
    @ryanloos5483 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    To address the torque steer, look at installing front control arm front poly bushings and poly subframe bushings inserts. When the haldex engages, the car can send 100% of the power to the front or rear depending on which end has the most traction. Haldex engagement is nearly instant and should not be noticeable.

    • @alexstromberg7696
      @alexstromberg7696 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only the newer V70Rs got the "InstantTraction" thing, so if this doesn't have that, it can probably be felt when the car changes the ratio of power.

    Great to see the TH-cam generation discovering the nuance of Volvo as much as the Grey beards who love them in the UK . A few points : The Haldex , DSTC and 4C systems need to be fully functional and serviced / VIDA software updated for this platform . Check the control arm bushes and steering rack for end float - steering pumps cook the fluid causing premature failure of pump and lines , retain the OEM Wheel / Tyre size and pressures , add 2 large bags of sand as rear ballast . My 10 yr. old AWD XC70 SE LUX D5 4 wheel drifts in the dry , digs in , and corrects itself without any drama - 'Advanced ' mode is permanently selected . With the OEM Suspension removed your V70 has been neutered . Enjoy !

    I bought my s60r about a week before you posted your first video with the original v70r. My haldex functioned but immediately I started spraying the driveshaft hubs with penetrating oil. A few weeks later I did haldex service on my wifes 05 s60 awd and the driveshaft was completely seized at the rear differential. With the shock dampener you cant get in there to smack the hub with a hammer. Their are places to install jack bolts into the backside of the driveshaft hub to push it apart but being in the rust belt the bolts seized up before pushing on the driveshaft hub. I made a tap out of a spare bolt by cutting slots in it with a dremel and using the bolt as a tap. Eventually I got the driveshaft apart. Had a ton of time in it.
    Meanwhile my s60r driveshaft had been sprayed 3x with penetrating oil. When I serviced the haldex on it I unbolted the driveshaft and smacked it with a dead blow hammer and it fell apart.
    Moral of story, rust belt...spray the driveshaft hubs/cv's with penetrating oil a couple times before you try to take it apart.

    I'm currently into my 2nd S60R and have owned a BMW 325 prior. I've always compared the handling of every other car to the 3 series. That 325 was fun!
    But, the build quality of the Volvo surpasses it, albeit minus the pin-point handling and turn-in of the 3 series. With that being said, I never revisted BMW since..nor have I ever spun out in wet slimy leafy fall conditions either with my S60Rs! Great vid! Thx much

  • @richardcalon3724
    @richardcalon3724 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The easy way to check if AWD is working is find a piece of grass the slicker the better, adjust outside mirror so you can watch rear tire, drop the clutch. The rear should engage and spin immediately along with front. If it doesn't put car on hoist try to turn rear drive shaft with car in gear, if it seems solid angle gear is OK. Apply power to Haldex differential electric pump, you should hear it run. If it doesn't that is your problem. Change Haldex fluid, I drilled and tapped my S60R to facilitate this, and replace electric Haldex pump. This is what caused my S60R to lack AWD and become essentially a powerful front driver. With AWD working the car doesn't have appreciable torque steer and at least on snowy roads feels more like a RWD.

    As long as the previous owner disabled the 4C suspension correctly so that it doesn't disable the selector switch, the Comfort, Sport, Advanced selection still has benefits with throttle response, valve timing, haldex control, etc.
    And the torque steer is common with the R's and some other engines. My S80 V8 had so much power that it had nasty torque steer on the highway when you put the pedal down.

    I had a Volvo S60r 2004 (350hk). Sold it 3 weeks ago :(. When the Haldex is working, there is no torque steer, but on wet/snow surface you could notice a little slip on the front tires before some power is send to the back wheels, but no torque steer.
    When the Haldex is no working the car is all over the place, can`t use first and second gear without holding to the steering wheel with your life.
    And some other info is that the car is sending 100% power to the front wheels. When it needs more traction it`s splits the power 50/50, so you can`t have the longest drift. I used mine on a ice track in Norway a couple of times.
    The Haldex gen2 on the car isn`t the most robust AWD system. I had to replace the angle gear on mine.
    You guys probably know this, but push the DSTC button 5 times and it disables the antiskid system completly and a guy told me that it also activate the haldex system all the time (not sure about the last part).

      Hi, there a sleeve between the differential on the transfer box off the M66 gearbox, it transfers the drive to the transfer box, the teeth inside the sleeve wear away and the drive to the prop shaft drops off there for losing the drive to the rear wheels.
      Its a tasks to say the least, the sub-frame and the transfer box have to be removed and the sleeve is usually struck in the transfer box had to cut them off in the past, but if I remember there not expensive, but the labour charges will soon change that, it makes a massive difference to the drive as the loss of drive falls away over a period of time so you don't notice it dropping off, until its pushed!
      Hope this is of some help

This was definitely the case about 5 years ago. After all, we lost the Hyundai Elantra Touring, we lost the Mazda 6 Sportwagon... But we have a great Volvo Wagon set, Jaguar has a new wagon (Shooting Brake) and Buick has the Regal TourX. There is also talk of Mazda, who always cuts against the grain, bringing their 6 Sportwagon back too. I foresee a new wave of wagons coming our way. It's a niche market, but at the $40,000 price point and up, people like wagons.

      Thanks. It's a major relief to have the BMW gone. And I go back and forth with the Lexus and turbos every day. It's the cheaper route right up to about 300hp/tq. The w55 starts shredding 3rd gear above that.
      The R154 or Nissan boxes are an option. But the headers and itbs on a straight six are so sexy. Right now I gotta figure out brakes and suspension.

    For a Front wheel Drive - Volvo has very lazy steering. But it is comfortable and that 2.5L is a singer of an engine.

    Without the 4C functioning you’re missing a lot of what makes this car so amazing. In ADVANCED the car behaves completely differently. Turn-in, engine response, haldex control, suspension behavior, the list goes on...

  • @MikoMuru
    @MikoMuru 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah just want to clarify torque steer is usually very much still a problem for awd cars. My 2004 s60r is the same. Awd is working but because engine is a horizontally positions in line five and transmission is thrown on the end this means also that there is a unequal length in axles for the front wheels. Thus this would cause uneven torque being applied to each side aka torque steer. And if you dont believe me there are procedures dor checking the awd angle gear.

    • @ShiftingLanes
      @ShiftingLanes  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not like this. We found out that it was the AWD system malfunctioning. Fixed now!

    It should not have torque steering issues. If I remember correctly, the engine in most inline engine voles are mounted sideways. The AWD system is definitely not working correctly.

  • @planetmadness5202

    All wheel drive in a volvo is having the power divided unequally. The Left front wheel is direct while the other three are locked together. Unless you drive in snow get rid of the rear driveline and you'll enjoy a much faster better handlng ride.

    Wagons are dying in the US because enthusiasts generally don't buy new cars and new car sales is what sets what manufacturers sell going forward. New car buyers all flock to SUVs because they want taller vehicles so they can sit as tall as trucks. As much as I am against buying new cars for the sake of value, if no one bought new there wouldn't be any used cars for anyone to buy and new car buyers tell manufacturers what the general population wants.

  • @Kacpa2
    @Kacpa2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Crossovers/SUV dont do anything better aside of maybe clearnece but not always. Storage wise they are far worse. They are only taller and usually shorter. People stupidly think they are better even when most of the time awd systems in these is just useless fluff turning only when you slip or not at all.
    Wagons are just fine in europe and australia for instance. All sedans on the market should have wagon or at very least liftback variant, but people in US are just really misguided with their car shoping decisions for last 30 years killing both manual transmissions and wagons.
