A simple stagecoach trip is complicated by the fact that Geronimo is on the warpath in the area. The passengers on the coach include a drunken doctor, two women, a bank manager who has taken off with his client's money, and the famous Ringo Kid, among others.

You see all the basic human virtues and vices here. But what most impressed me is that you see something Hollywood seems to have forgotten altogether: basic human decency. The way Ringo (John Wayne) treats Dallas (Claire Trevor), whom some of the other riders on the stagecoach ostracize because she appears to have been a prostitute, goes to the very basis of what we should all admire as human decency. He isn't nice to her because he wants to be 'nice'. God forbid. He is good to her because she is good to others. She earns his respect, just as Mary Magdaleine earns that of the Christ.
The cinematography in this movie is astounding. You see painting after painting, carefully composed.
But it is the presentation of basic human virtues, stripped of all social pretense, that hits you in the gut. And no movie does that better than this."

"I admit I am not a huge western fan, but there have been some I have really liked. Stagecoach is no exception, in fact it is a brilliant film not just as a western but of any genre really. Everything about it is wonderful, and I can see why Orson Welles watched this apparently 40 times preparing for Citizen Kane. The cinematography is gorgeous, and as always the Monument Valley locations are magnificent. The music is very well done too, and the story while simple always grips. The script is clever and well written and all the characters are credible. On top of that the big chase sequence for me has to be one of the finest action set pieces for any film. The special thing about these characters are that by the end of the film they aren't as they are initially seen to be. John Ford's direction is superb, and the acting is excellent, not just from John Wayne who gives one of his better performances here but also from the likes of John Carradine. Thomas Mitchell though is the one that steals the show. Overall, a fine film and a benchmark in the western genre. 10/10"

I have been binging older westerns all weekend, it's a very refreshing change from current movies. I really enjoy them.
Wayne had been making films for 10 years but Stagecoach made him a star one of the greatest Westerns ever made
Wheter colorized, or in its original black and white format, still the best version. The casting is outstanding.

It says 1939. Wow. I've never seen John Wayne so young like my Uncle Bill used to watch a lot of John Wayne movies. But I don't believe I ever saw this until today. And I'm 51 years what an outstanding Western I sure don't make pictures like this anymore

There are only a handful of movie everyone should see at least once before they die. This is one. An absolute masterpiece!

This is one of my all time favorite movies of John Wayne, along with The Searchers. I never missed color when I was watching black and white; too caught up in the movie.

Made in 1939, wow always loved this movie, 27 years before I was even born, but the first time I watched this most of these people were still alive. I remember the last time I watched this years ago was realizing at 11:20 that the good old drunk doctor had flipped off the prudish ladies as a goodbye. Helluva thing in a movie that long ago. I want to thank the one posting this, and I mean really, The Duke made a huge impression on my life, making an example of the ideal of the American Man, his love of Country, his acceptance and love of other races, his grateful respect of strong women, and later on his exceptional portrayals of father-figure characters. I still love and appreciate his contribution to American cinema above all others. Also, gotta say, think these were colorized by Ted Turner, I see only blue, purple, and peach, ugh, try to appreciate anyways.
It was a treat to see a young John Carradine, and quite entertaining to watch bits of b&w pop in and out throughout: part of a hand here, a face there, I love the movie colorized or not, my preference is not.
C’mon hate to be the debbie downer here. Where do you get Wayne’s acceptance and love of other races from. Not from Mr Wayne. Mr. Wayne was a proud White supremacist and proud of it. Read his Playboy interview from the 70’s. Don’t take my word. You could look it up.

The Big Trail is a real masterpiece seldom seen on Turner. It's one of my all time favorites.

I have seen the 1966 re-make and the television re-makes. This one is still the best. The actors and actresses in this version brought out the best in each other. What a blessing to see this in color. I like to think the reason the proprietor’s Apache wife had the men chase the horses away was to keep the Stagecoach at the Stagecoach Stop till the US Cavalry arrived. Face and accept it, if the US Cavalry had not stumbled upon the Stagecoach under attack everyone would have been killed.

It's a sad thing when you can recognize all the stars from the 50s and 60s like Claire, Trevor, Andy Devine, (Jingles P Jones) John Caradine,, Thomas Mitchel ( Immortal Sergeant), and Tim Holt, and so few people know who the are or what they've accomplished. This is the movie that made an down and out actor, John Wayne a household name.

This movie is 1939...well before 50's and 60's
John Wayne wasn't down and out. He was in 2 reelers and B westerns prior, but not down and out.
In color! Makes all the difference to me. Especially all the wonderful Vista's. Beautiful
I grew up with westerns. Played big cowboys and little cowboys in the dirt. Had a red hat. Chaps. Holster. Two guns. I moved to Oklahoma to go to college. And stayed.

Note: a few minutes where the stagecoach is first attacked are missing. One second they're talking, next second they're shooting. But the color is great!

John Wayne did many of his own stunts. As he was a stunt man, Wayne wanted to do them all, but the studio wouldn't risk him.

That one scene at 1:13:35 - 42 is heartbreaking:
Mrs Mallory: “Dallas if there’s ever anything I can do for…..”
Dallas: “I know.”
Mrs Mallory knows how much she owes Dallas. Yes, Dallas is a “Showgirl” but Dallas helped with the baby’s delivery and then cared for it while Mrs Mallory began recovering and gaining her strength back. As hard a lesson as it was to learn, Mrs Mallory discovered she and Dallas are NOT so different after all. She owes Dallas everything but there is no way she can pay her back. Their stations in life will always keep them apart. The plain simple truth is there is absolutely nothing she can do for Dallas.

I think that the inference is that Dallas is more than just a showgirl. Because of the Hays codes these things could not be said or shown. But if you read between the lines, the inference is that she might be a hooker. Or at the very least a 'loose woman' meaning she sleeps around. The beauty is, because its not directly addressed, it leaves US to form our own conclusion. Is she really? Or do those old bats in the law and order league just THINK she is one? If she were merely a showgirl in the saloon, they wouldn't move to the other end of the dinner table or caution Mrs. Mallory not to ride with her in the stagecoach.

Better than the 1966 remake!
The remake was OK except for the ending which infuriates me. In this version Curly trusts Ringo enough to take the cuffs off him and let him kill the Plummers himself. In '66 he does the same,eventually, but only after taking on the Plummers by himself and getting shot. I saw the '66 version first but STILL saw the mistake Curly was making. At that point he had no reason to mistrust Ringo.

John Wayne and Yakima Canutt made the movie Stagecoach. Canutt was the stunt man who did all of the stunts. He actually jumps from his horse onto a team of six stagecoach horses. And then he also slides underneath all of them and and also brings the stagecoach to a safe stop. Wayne suggested Lloyd Noland but Ford chose Wayne over Lloyd Nolan and history was made. Wayne also uses the rifle type made famous by Chuck Connors in the Rifleman TV series.
Couldn’t agree more the black and white gives much more atmosphere to the film, which is a black and white movie.
