  • Western Movie in Full Length starring John Wayne: The Undefeated - After the Civil War, ex-Confederate soldiers heading for a new life in Mexico run into ex-Union cavalrymen selling horses to the Mexican government but they must join forces to fight off Mexican bandits and revolutionaries.
    The Undefeated (1969)
    Director: Andrew V. McLaglen
Writers: James Lee Barrett (screenplay), Stanley Hough (story) (as Stanley L. Hough)
Stars: John Wayne, Rock Hudson, Antonio Aguilar
Genres: Action, Adventure, Romance, War, Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
    Release Date: 25 September 1969
Filming Locations: Bavispe River, Sonora, Mexico
    Storyline:
After the Civil War, ex-Union Colonel John Henry Thomas and ex-Confederate Colonel James Langdon are leading two disparate groups of people through strife-torn Mexico. John Henry and company are bringing horses to the unpopular Mexican government for $35 a head while Langdon is leading a contingent of displaced southerners, who are looking for a new life in Mexico after losing their property to carpetbaggers. The two men are eventually forced to mend their differences in order to fight off both bandits and revolutionaries, as they try to lead their friends and kin to safety. Written by Alfred Jingle
    Reviews:
"John Wayne and Rock Hudson play off each other with confidence and style in this fine movie western.
THE UNDEFEATED endlessly frames its two super-popular movie stars from low camera angles and often adds perfect blue skies above and picturesque western vistas in deep focus behind. Both in full command of the camera, regal, standing straight and tall -- here John Wayne and Rock Hudson live forever larger than life. THE UNDEFEATED is pure hero worship eye candy!
Although the story is rather flawed, everything else is A+. The music is among the best of bold western movie scores. The direction as noted above is respectful to the picture's two great American icons. It is not perfect, but THE UNDEFEATED is an exceptionally fun movie to watch." Written by Pro Jury on IMDb.com
"This was one of Hugo Montenegro's finest scores. John Wayne and Rock Hudson played off each other magnificently. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have a great supporting cast including Bruce Cabot, Ben 'Son' Johnson, and Edward Faulkner. Marian McCargo played a great role as the widow of a Confederate soldier and Roman Gabriel as Blue Boy, Duke's adopted Indian son, was surprisingly good. Andrew V. McLaglen was an underrated director and The Undefeated proves that." Written by frank4122 on IMDb.com

Hands down, my favorite John Wayne movie. Two legends of the screen - John Wayne and Rock Hudson. Then we have Lee Meriwether, Jan-Michael Vincent, Roman Gabriel, and the incomparable Ben Johnson. Add to that adventure, romance, comedy, drama, and horses for days, and you've got yourself one hell of a movie.

Yeah, my parents cut our TV off when I was about 7, so I ventured down to our basement to try and find something else to distract myself with, and low and behold, I found dozens... DOZENS... of John Wayne westerns, and I must've watched almost all of them 10 times over!
My personal favorites are "El Dorado", "Rooster Cogburn", and "The Comoncheros", though I've always had a preference for the Duke's late westerns, particularly in the 70s.

Dano portrayed Elijah the clairvoyant cat in Moby Dick 1956, and didn't know where Josey Wales was at in 1976. When I see that big house beginning of this movie seeing their big house reminds me of the house my grandmother lived in when I was a little girl. My sister and me stayed with her every summer. We went to church every Sunday and bible school. I love my grandmother very much. She made most of our barbi doll clothes and a lot of our clothes. The clothes she made us looked like they were bought in a store. I loved working in the garden with her and late afternoon she would tell us the best ghost stories, she told us stories when she was a little girl, lol I could listen to her talk forever!! I miss her so much!! I am 67 years old now and I find myself thinking of her more and more.I guess cause it always think of the wonderful times I had there with my sister and her. We gathered eggs for her, helped in the garden and helped her put up vegetables in the freezer. One thing she use to say always puzzled me, instead of saying would you help me,she would say would you hope me.i asked her once why she said hope? She laughed and said that was old fashioned talk. Her kind voice always gave me comfort like my mother. My mother will be 90 this December. I need to go visit her at my sister's . I have always been so close to my sister,we are only a year apart. How my mom dealt with that ,I will never know !!! Lol I know one day I will see my grandmother and dad, also my oldest daughter Tonya, who I lost to breast cancer. God I miss her and my Dad. He was a great dad!!! My mama has a heart of gold!!! I sure miss the days growing up!!!!

I was 10 when this movie came out! The next year began the 1970's, IMHO the last good decade where Hollywood made a decent Western movie and there were still a few good Western TV shows left on TV. (Bonanza/Alias Smith and Jones/Gunsmoke) Once the 80's began, TV no longer had Westerns as regular TV shows, and only now and then would Hollywood crank out a Western worth mentioning! Nowadays, if there is a Western on TV, chances are it is a much hyped, limited run miniseries, or if Hollywood decides to make a Western, they remake a classic that should be left alone, such as the remake of True Grit. Why did they ever!!!...This movie, plus The Cowboys with John Wayne, Red River with Wayne as well, were all such good, well produced movies, and probably on a scale of money back in those days, cheaper to make than studio-based productions using CGI for what is made today concerning other topics other than Westerns. It's a shame the making of good, quality Westerns, be it theatrical release or made for TV, has now become a lost art. It's also a shame the broad appeal of such type of movies and TV shows is now down to just a narrow scope, with the demographics being older folks like myself. Like I said, it's all such a lost art...because it's a dying art.

I watched this as a young man at a drive-in theatre with my family. Decades later I found myself re-enacting the Civil War as a cavalry trooper. The film has one big plot problem. It is this. Following the Civil War the US found itself in possession of thousands, if not millions, of surplus horses. By 1866 the US found itself in the horse selling business with no need to buy more. Factually, many ex-confederate soldiers went to Mexico after the war. Missouri's Fighting Jo Shelby led his command to Mexico after the war rather than surrender. He hoped to secure a commission in Maximillian's army. It was refused.

Don't think I've ever seen a John Wayne movie I didn't like. But like all things Hollywood gets the truth wrong. First off Rock Hudson's thumb on top of the rifle Rock while shooting, shows you that most Hollywood people know nothing about guns and need training. The most important thing is that the Cherokee People sided with the South not the North. In fact most Native American tribes sided and fought for the South, not to mention Mexican Americans, and a lot of free black men. The true history is out there you just have to find it. But still a badass John Wayne Fleck. The fact that people called him racist obviously never watch the John Wayne movie or knew the man.

    • @dustyak79
      @dustyak79 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The Movie was very loosely based off a book albeit the book might of took some liberty's but it was about General Joe Shelby and the Iron Brigade he fought in the Trans Mississippi theater mostly in Missouri and Arkansas and raiding Kansas what the movie got wrong was they didn't need some cowboys help they actually brought some temporary order to Texas as being the only unit still retaining discipline, then sunk the battle flag in the Rio Grande (unsure if it was the confederate battle flag as a lot of Missouri units had their own) also they reportedly broke a siege for the Emperors troops at a fort and didn't get messed with by the Mexican rebels.

    • @KingofDiamonds117

I don't know about everywhere else, but mississippi had a number of native american and white people marrying. I don't know if this is what influenced certain tribes to join the south, but the consequences afterwards caused many of these half white and half native to go to special "desavaging" schools. what happened to the rest of the tribes is as history tells you.

Actually, most Indian tribes stayed out of the fight all together. the Cherokee did not formally pick a side, but one Confederate general was a Cherokee and did recruit other Cherokee to the Cause. Blueboy is Cherokee, but has been raised by Thomas. No black men ever fought for the South. Many were carried along with the army, but they were not enrolled, nor uniformed, nor trained, nor armed. They performed the many and varied menial tasks necessary fr an army to function but, just like the animals they often tended, every single one of them was someone's private property.
