  • HP T620 Plus is a good x86 PC for network appliance, for example router, firewall and radius server. A lot of people are running it with OpenWRT or pfSense. The PC is powered by the AMD GX-420CA Soc, with 4 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz. It supports up to 16GB of DDR3L RAM has variety of connectors and port: Mini-PCIE, M.2 SATA SSD, m-SATA and internal USB port. It also has a PCIE x16 slot, which can fit a Ethernet Adapter or a Low Profile graphic card.
    I've installed OpenWRT on the PC and set it up as a router. In this video, I will share with you an short overview of the HP T620 Plus.

    03:51 - Closer look at the internal connectors - Mini-PCIE, PCIE x16, M.2 SATA SSD
    04:34 - Install the Intel Ethernet Adapter on HP T620P PCIE x16 port
    05:19 - HP 85W/90W power adapter for HP T620P
    05:39 - OpenWRT on the HP T620P
    In the next video, we will do some tests to see the performance of the PC running OpenWRT x86 - NAT, OpenVPN, Wireguard VPN and stability of the WAN connection.
    Thanks for watching and I will see you in the next video!

    In case you need a suggestion for a new video, I've discovered you can install iperf3 directly on an OpenWRT router, it's really handy to test LAN speed without the need for two separate machines on the network!

      Yup, we can set up the iperf server running on the router and I have tried this in some of the video. Thanks for sharing this.

      I want to sell 40 customers and grow the small business to have 200 user by next year June. note I am quite technical so I can understand as I am doing my degree in network engineering but we have not gotten to do something like this. I need a reply urgently may be you can do a video on that or send me some information.

    Hi thanks for the video. I would like to add a wifi card Qualcomm Atheros AR9485. Would you be kind enough to guide on how to setup and configure this? Also would appreciate if you could give a heads up on how to have this built-in. I have the same machine, HP T620 Plus and would really like to use it as my home router. Thanks

      In order to make a wireless adapter work, you will need to install firmware/driver. There is a video on "Install wireless network adapter" on the OpenWRT tutorial playlist. You can watch this video to have the basic concept. Basically you will need to find the driver package for your card and install it with opkg / LucCI software manager.

    • @VanTechCorner

      Hey, I pay for ~ 17$/month for 200Mbps unlimited fiber connection. It comes with a ZTE dualband GPON routers and 2 nodes of WiFi Mesh. The ISP now double the bandwidth to their speedtest server, that why you see ~ 400 Mbps.

    In your next video, when you do some tests to see the performance of the PC running OpenWRT x86 - NAT.....
    would like to see extensive details of configurations of NAT , Openwrt has a different style of firewall and it took a few attempts to get it set right because it would block everything , and there are so many install instructions that are conflicting as some folks rent a cloud server for vpn and some use a commercial vpn service
    Seeing details of NAT in Openwrt would be great to see the various possible confirmations that can be done Thanks !

      Yes, we have different type of NAT and I will make a video about this, soon. I don't have a networking certificate so it is not easy to explain what I understand about NAT in a technical way. Thanks for your constructive comment.

    • @VanTechCorner
      @VanTechCorner  ปีที่แล้ว

      The installation is very simple: download the OpenWRT x86 build from openwrt.org and write it to the USB with Rufus. I have done 2 videos for the installation guide, you can check them out.

      @@VanTechCorner I am having trouble getting my T620 plus to work with Openwrt. I installed Intel 1000 PT 4 port nic. Booted with ubuntu live USB flash drive and it recognizes onboard nic as well as Intel 4 port nic and all network ports work. I then download the openwrt-22.03.1-x86-64-generic-squashfs-combined.imag.gz. Unzipped and flashed it to internal m.2 SATA drive using DD command. rebooted and open wrt sits on "adding vlan 0 to hw filter on device eth1" never gets to a prompt. I can't access web interface either. I have tried ext4 combined image, I have tried using a USB flash drive with efi image and all are getting stuck at the same message. Appreciate any advice you can give to troubleshoot.

    • @VanTechCorner
      @VanTechCorner  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, please give a try with BIOS (Legacy) boot first. Also, it is suggested to remove the network adapter and try with the onboard NIC on the first boot, so that the LAN port will be the onboard NIC.

    If you need this much performance you should be looking at pfsense or opnsense.

      Why?

    • @chai_reddy
      @chai_reddy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nekilik5925 Openwrt doesn't need this much power for what it can do. You would only need this performance when doing IDS/IPS, multi user VPN, complex firewall rules etc. which is more suited to be done on something like opnsese/pfsense than openwrt.

    • @VanTechCorner

    • @VanTechCorner
      @VanTechCorner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no way to bypass that, when you are using the 4G connection NAT is not working properly that is why you can't have the required NAT type to play game. However, you can try to contact your network provider and ask them to check on this.
