  • In this video, we are going to install the USB to Ethernet adapter on the Raspberry Pi and configure it as a WAN interface. The best improvement of the Raspberry Pi 4 is that it has USB 3.0 and true gigabit ethernet port, which should be good to setup as WAN and LAN.
    For this tutorial, I used the D-Link DUB-1312 USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet adapter but any of the adapter will work, no matter it is a gigabit ethernet or fast ethernet.
    If you have a monitor and keyboard, the configurationcan be done easier. Else, SSH connection works just fine. I am using the Raspberry Pi 4 and due to it is the snapshot version, LuCI is not pre-installed. Below is how we do it:
    1. Change the LAN IP of the router and connect it to the main network to have a working internet connection
    2. With the working internet connection, install LuCI using CLI
    3. With LuCI installed, configure the driver for USB to Ethernet adapter and setup WAN interface. Package used kmod-usb-net-asix-ax88179
    Video timeframe:
    00:00 - Introduction: Install USB to Ethernet adapter on OpenWRT
    01:00 - Download the firmware, install it to SD card and boot up OpenWRT
    02:08 - Network topology explaination
    03:38 - Boot up the Raspberry Pi 4 with OpenWRT
    04:50 - Turn off DHCP server and change IP address of LAN interface
    10:30 - Install Luci using Command Line (CLI)
    12:12 - Install USB to Ethernet adapter driver package
    13:40 - Configure WAN interface and revert IP address of LAN interface
    17:00 - Tests and final words

    USB to Ethernet adapter package/ driver: openwrt.org/packages/pkgdata/...

    Holy crap this tutorial is a lifesaver. Due to the chip shortage, i have been unable to get a hold of a Rpi4, and have been prototyping with an old Rpi2. I had lost my only working keyboard dongle. This tutorial will help me greatly in creating a custom privacy-oriented router. Thank you for your service.

    • @VanTechCorner
      @VanTechCorner  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is advised use ethernet card powered by Intel chipset when you are using Linux /pfSense and Qualcomm Atheros for OpenWRT. There are issues with performance with other chipsets and people don't like them, especially Linux and pfSense users. I got the same problem with a Realtek network port.
      When I found this D Link USB 2 Ethernet adapter, it was a second hand unit and it supper cheap, so I bough it for some tests. It turn out that this DUB-1312 works well with Windows, MacOS, Synology and now OpenWRT. I got the speed of ~ 900 Mbps when downloading the file from the NAS to the computer with this adapter. So yeah, if you have a good budget, go with the good devices. Else, plan around with second hand stuff like me and have fun :D

  • @plica06

    Good stuff Van. Which is the better way to configure a Pi 4 as an OpenWrt router... using a USB/Ethernet adapter to make the second network interface or using vlan to get two network interfaces on the Pi 4? Will vlan give a slower or faster network speed than using the ethernet adapter?

    • @VanTechCorner
      @VanTechCorner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for the comment. I personally prefer using a USB to Ethernet adapter because we have 2 different physical network interfaces. 1 or 2 VLANs will not really slow down the network but more will do. At the same time, there can be security issues if you don't setup the the VLAN/ firewall properly since your switch is directly connected to the internet, etc.

    Hello Van. I was able to get this working and all my home devices are able to reach the internet via the raspberry pi 4 as a router and firewall between my ISP and home network. I would like to explore more options on how to create VLANs to segregate my network into three parts which is Guest, IoT and the default LAN. I have seen many tutorials and community help but unable to get some answers in which RPi4B is involved which does not have a switch built in and LAN is via a single port. My question is, via this single LAN port how can I achieve my requirement of different networks. Played around with VLANs but still unable to get it working. I am new to openwrt on a RPi4B, so please help me. I have basic network knowledge. Thank you in advance.

If I get trhis working then i will do a VPNclient also. The problem I am having is that the adapter I chose isn't recognized by the PI. I can't find the openwrt drivers. I do not know PI so I am learning along the way. The adapter is the Techkey AC1200 a Realtek chipset. The webpage says it is a 8812bu chipset. Would you know the drivers i need to load to make this work.

    Great video! Is there any limit to how many ports the dumb switch could have? Do you think the pi could support 24 ports? With low Mbs speeds?

    • @VanTechCorner
      @VanTechCorner  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, sorry for the late response. When it comes to LAN to LAN traffic, it will be handled by the switch so there is no limit on the number of the ports. However, when it come to internet traffic, it will be routed to the network port on the Raspberry Pi with tested by me capped at ~ 930 Mbps. So if your internet traffic is not that high, or around 400 Mbps, this PRI can work well.

    Every time I get to 15:28 and configure then save the LAN interface changes, my PC never recognizes the ethernet connection. Stuck on "identifying" and then the changes get reverted because of the fail safe timer. Have any ideas on why this is happening/what I can do? Everything until then works perfectly

    • @VanTechCorner
      @VanTechCorner  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will need to connect the network cable from the PC to the Pi's LAN port, and then open the LuCI page to confirm the change. This should be done fast, or else the change will be reverted.

    What’s is your internet speed? I’m thinking about using a raspberry pi to run qos on my network. We are upgrading to fiber so we will get 1000 up and down. Will the raspberry pi bottleneck the network or would it possibly be a better option just to leave all of the qos work on the router itself?

    • @VanTechCorner
      @VanTechCorner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have tested the WAN to LAN throughput with this USB 3.0 ethernet and the onboard port, the throughput is at ~ 920 Mbps. If you want to run 1 Gbps fiber link, I think you will need better router to do the job.

    • @VanTechCorner
      @VanTechCorner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are using the USB to Ethernet adapter to setup WAN, there is no need to use VLAN (since we are not running all service on the same port). However, you will need a switch if you want to extend your network. Any switch will do, just connect it to your LAN port on the Raspberry Pi.

    Thast internet speed so crazy.!!
    Are you use fiber optic.?
    Or 4G LTE internet.?

    • @VanTechCorner
      @VanTechCorner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, I am using fiber optic. The Pi 4 has true gigabit ethernet and the USB 3.0 so I expect that they could handle at least 800 Mbps. Sad that I don't have that fast internet connection to test.

      No, I am using the 200 Mbps plan and normally the speedtest result will be a little bit higher.

      I moved to VN and the price is cheaper here. This is just normal fiber connection, not leased line. The price is around 70 MYR, comes with a dualband GPON routers with 2 nodes of mesh wifi.

    Can I use built-in wifi instead of the second Ethernet adapter?

    • @VanTechCorner
      @VanTechCorner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah why not? However, the wifi link speed is only 150 Mbps on AC 5 Ghz and the signal is not strong.

      I followed your instructions but chose wifi adapter instead of ethernet but after saving it says following: "Error: Network device is not present".
      Should I do something differently?

      I am not really understand you now. What are you doing with the router? If you want to set it up as AP client, do it in the wireless section instead.

      For VLAN configuration - yes, you just need to create the VLAN interface and the status will be tagged by default (no way to change it).
