      36:10 this with the book by the Duke of Gebir is a citation out of of french literature. Unluckily I fail to remember by whom. Probably by Alexandre Dumas senior.
      There once was a documentary on books bound with human skin in american libraries that retold this story. It had something to do with one of the many knocked down medieval towers and castles at the outskirts of Paris whose legends made it into several french books of the 18/19th century.
      I do not think it was Gilles de Reis, though that was my first guess, but I think these books bound in human skin has something to do if not with the family Montmorency and de Reis' italian alchemist, then with the knacker's place at Montfaucon, or some Baron Belleme. - Probably Sanson had that story in his memories about the headsmen of Paris.
      I just used Google and found that Dumas wrote a story about the Tour de Nesle, and that royal love-affair had somebody skinned, whose skin might have ended up as a book-binding.- So if somebody should want to write an essay or a video-script on the re-use of creepy literary motivs...

    At 19:50 you talk about Kvothe finding a book that mentions the Chandrian. By his account, the text was over 200 years old. Did you notice the name of the town where he got the testimony?! “One drunk tanner in the town of
    Hillsbarrow….” It’s the ruins outside of Trebon! Only now it’s called Barrow Hill. It also happens to be place where the Chandrian, at one point in history, obviously had an influence. Hence the piece of pottery found there at the wedding.

    when kvothe invents the tale about The Chronicler he also mentions something about the high king of modeg “The high king’s name is written in a book of glass, hidden in a box of copper. And that box is locked away in a great iron chest where nobody can touch it.”
    though it was quite interesting as it sounds like kvothe’s chest which is said to have a lock of iron, a lock of copper and a lock unseen (the unseen lock being the glass book in this case)

    13:00 This is my favorite scene in the series, I have read it several times and more often than not it gets a couple tears rolling through my skin. Kvothe's story about how him learning to make music before talking, how this was connected to his mother and finnaly being torn apart by the drunken realization that he would never hear that tune receive answer, to then hear "I am here, you are safe" is simply a beautiful heartbreaking moment that really resonates with me.

      I think truly showing Auri and Kvothe are truly connected. What a well written piece that its such a beautiful human to human moment, and also a heavy hint of the lore.

      It took me a lot of time to realize why this brought me to tears every single time, and it's not even because he was mourning for his mother, but because for the first time he had someone to comfort him. For the first time he showed himself vulnerable in front of someone. That is why I like Auri so much, she brings a side of Kvothe that we don't usually see.

    I love this series and these videos so much. The wait for the third book is almost mythical or sacred at this point. But no other series marries grandeur, mystery, heart, magic, friendship and small personal stories the way this does. The prose is wild, the many clues are so artful. And yet Rothfuss seemingly just won’t finish it. It is a strange and terrible and beautiful thing.
    I just can’t help but return to Kote’s quote when thinking on the third book. “When someone tells you a piece of their life, they’re giving you a gift, not granting you your due”… yet I still can’t accept it won’t ever come.

    • @domhuckle
      @domhuckle ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Rothfuss said the books will form a tragedy of sorts - what tragedy is greater than 2 out of 3 books?

  • @chippytwang
    @chippytwang ปีที่แล้ว +43

    Great video as always, Jay!!
    3:30 regarding sleep, if you take the narrative quite literally, Kote is said to sleep in the end of the 1st chapter of NOTW: "It was a long time before he walked past the chest to bed. Once in bed, it was a long time before he slept."
    8:32 Alternatively, the 'Ring of Wood' may refer to the ring Auri gives Kvothe at the end of NOTW. "It was made of warm, smooth wood. “What does it do?” I asked. “It keeps secrets,” she said."
    10:34 (no note, but god i've always loved this drawing, ahahah)
    11:47 regarding Elodin, Manet, and spades, it's been theorized that Elodin can harness the name of the wind through 'listening' in order to eavesdrop. It's hinted at in Book 1; Elodin asks Kvothe a question in Siaru in the initial admissions interview. Did Elodin hear Kvothe speaking Siaru to Roent a couple days ago when he boarded the caravan to Imre? There's two more such clues. WMF ch7, Kvothe swears to Simmon 'on my mother's milk'. WMF ch11, Elodin swears to Kvothe 'on my mother's milk'. Hmmmmm.... And also at some point, Wil tells Kvothe to "spit for luck" over the bridge. As Kvothe is leaving for Severen, Elodin tells him to spit for luck
    15:58 strong agree on Beladari/Belen connection
    32:44 Faeriniel, "a place where all the roads in the world meet". Hmm! Back in NOTW ch34, when Kvothe leaves Denna for University, his parting words are: “I’ll see you where the roads meet.” I take this as foreshadowing that Kvothe is going to run into Denna, quite unexpectedly, in Faeriniel or Fae itself
    38:20 Fela's promotion to Re'lar is interesting. Fela is already a Re'lar in NOTW, as Kilvin says, “I owe you a great weight of thanks for pulling Re’lar Fela from the fire today.” I take it to mean that Elodin is using the ANCIENT meaning of the term, "speaker of names", and not the colloquial/academic meaning it has taken on in modern times. Puppet also seems to speak of E'lir and Re'lar in the ancient sense of the words
    43:08 Ooo you said, "He has his reasons, and wants us to trust him" for not explaining the shipwreck. I haven't heard that quote before, but I'm not surprised to hear that he's said that. Wrapped up in that bit of fast-forwarded shipwreck is Kvothe tending his injuries and reciting poetry in Junpui. Rothfuss has confirmed that a small part of DoS will be in Junpui and that he's very proud of that piece. Could all tie together!
    43:35 Threpe as the betrayer... very interesting! I'll have to inspect more closely
    44:22 congrats on the wedding! Best wishes!! :)

    • @CapturedInWords
      @CapturedInWords  ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Really great points made! Good find about Kote sleeping in NOTW ch 1, so it looks like he does sleep after all!
      The wooden ring could definitely be the one that Auri gave him too, I always forget about that ring. Actually I think it would probably make more sense for him to wear that then the one he got in vintas.
      Wow very interesting theory about Elodin using the name of the wind to eavesdrop, I never heard that theory! Hmmm with all the examples you gave I think this could definitely be likely. In that case, it's very interesting that Elodin took such a big interest in kvothe from the beginning and has been listening in on his private conversations.
      With part of DoS being in Junpui, I wonder if Kvothe has been holding off on telling the story about the shipwreck because it would spoil the plot twist that happens later on when he discovers Count Threpe betrayed him (given that this theory ends up being correct). Kvothe likes to tell a good story, and may not want the betrayal to be too obvious, but eventually he plans on circling back to give details on what happened during the shipwreck and surviving in Junpui.
      Also thank you!! 🙌🎉

    “Like a drawstone even in our sleep Standing stone by old road is the way To lead you ever deeper into Fae. Laystone as you lay in hill or dell Greystone leads to something something ‘ell.’”

    I think Ambrose and his family will be killing the people in line for king to make him the heir. Kvothe will either find himself in an ironic position where he is forced to help Ambrose, killing the King and making Ambrose king (obviously book 3 would need to provide reasons to navigate Kvothe into this position) OR Kvothe kills Ambrose once he discovers how he navigated to becoming King.

    • @CapturedInWords

      My thoughts as well!! I think either of those are the most likely options. I think I'd find it most interesting if Kvothe is forced to help Ambrose become king, and it would even be a bigger plot twist if Ambrose has character growth and becomes a better man when he has the responsibility of being king (though that may be unlikely, he is quite the jackass lol).

    36:00 in. I think Puppet is reenacting the story Kvothe was told by Trapis in Tar'Bean. The story that Trapis had some parts very well rehearsed and Kvothe looked at his robes thinking they may be Priest robes. The story of the Origin of Perial, Tehlu, and Encannis.
    Who side note: kinda represent Mercy or Love(Perial praying for her neighbors)
    Justice(Tahlu giving punishment to set things right, but acceptance after)
    And Absolute Evil (Encanis would rather burn than give in to not preying on others)
    And we kinda have that being built in the current story with Haliax, Kvothe, and Auri? Idk feel somethings there. Rothfuss likes his onions like his ogres, with layers.
    I think the Amyr hid secrets within the religion but the Chandrian corrupted the Church as evidenced by the priest arresting Skarpi; and i think it even alludes to Kvothe mightve seen them getting orders from one of the Chandrian even. I havent read that part in awhile but pretty sure Kvothe sees a cowl shrouded in darkness with no face talking to the priests.
    I think Puppet was totally a former master and a watcher in league with Lorian, whos totally an Amyr or friend to the Amyr.

    i have yet to see this theory anywhere. Pat loves threes. The books talk about threes all the time. So what we know is there are two realms, the four corners and the fae. what if there’s a third. Lanre is stuck in the four corners as long as people know what he did. what the chandrian did. the third world, through the doors of stone is heaven, lanre and the chandrian want to go there to finally have peace. that’s why they use denna to put out a song that changed his story. but everyone that knows what they really did they go and kill, like kvothes family, and the wedding party for finding the urn.

    Dont know if anyone will see this, but I'm pretty sure Auri tells Elodin that he has not brought a gift for kvothe, only for her. Elodin points out that Kvothe has not brought him a gift either, but Auri says that Kvothe has brought music, which is a gift to everyone. I think thats why she was cross with him, and Auri sniff and eats the cinnas fruit readily enough, so i dont know if it suggests that she is one of the Belladari.

    Master Ash theories- Manet because it mentions how light he is on his feet, he has been at the university forever flying under the radar as an E’lir
    Or Ambrose’s father- assuming he plays the same instrument as his son, has connections with high court and has leverage at the university

    My take is that Bredon Not only is Denna's patron but he is also an Amyr and the Angel Kvothe kills (Because it's said that the Amyr were originally "Angels")

    • @CapturedInWords
      @CapturedInWords  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think Bredon is an Amyr as well, and that he is likely Denna's patron. However, the Angels and Amyr are different: At the end of the Creation War, Aleph came to the world of Temerant and offered to change the Ruach into angels. "He touched their hands and eyes and hearts. The last time he touched them there was pain, and wings tore from their backs that they might go where they wished. Wings of fire and shadow. Wings of iron and glass. Wings of stone and blood."
      He changed many of them, but Selitos refused the offer to become an angel and instead gathered a group of Ruach together who vowed to seek vengeance and confound the Chandrian. This group became the Amyr. So they're not human and they're not angels, they are Ruach.

    I find it weird that the masters seem to have no grasp of astronomy. Even if it isn't known that the moon goes into the Fae, they should have some theories on the subject. Compare a modern student getting the question "What is dark matter?"
    Is this relevant? Probably not.

    Knock on wood, but the stories we tell ourselves often become true and hard to change, Rothfuss seems to have been in a state of anxious stagnation for the past decade and this new novella might be him trying to change his story from tragic perfectionist to man who writes stories that are published. Even the greatest lifters start small again after a long hiatus. Perhaps Rothfuss is publishing with progressive overload.
