Cobblestone steps sat crooked and disheveled along the path. I wondered how merchants ever managed to take their wagons this way.
I was guiding the ranchers daughter back home. She couldn’t have been older than ten. “How much further?”, she questioned. “Shouldn’t be more than another mile or so.” I was taking her to a friend of mine, a safe haven. Someone to look after her. She had gotten lost after guardsmen attacked her family’s fields. Her father hadn’t been home and she barely escaped the fire. I found her later that night, crying on the side of the road. Her entire family was missing.
I must have been distracted, there was a shrill sound nearby.. almost like something sharp was dropped. A sword scratching the ground. I was probably just paranoid... it had been a long day. “It doesn't make sense... why would guardsmen burn your fields?”, I exclaimed. She didn't answer for a moment. “...I don’t know. They used to be friendly and helped us anytime they were around. But.. something changed awhile ago. Their armor looked bruised and battered, they started demanding payment for our protection.” “It’s almost as if-“, she was cut off suddenly.
Turning around, I saw a knife held to her throat.

    On Puppet and the Archive:
I hear prescious few talking about the inscription on the Archive, Vorfelan Rhinata Moire.
The Adem use an old word for Chandrian, Rhinta. Which sounds like Rhinata, doesn't it?
It seems entirely possible that a fortress of stone with only one entrance, dedicated to preserving knowledge, with activity 24/7, with a vault designed to keep Namers out, is a perfect way to fight the Chandrian / Rhinta.
Which would explain why knowledge of the Amyr and Chandrian is being pruned, to be kept in the most secure location.
In that context, Puppet could indeed be a guardian. His open flames are to check if they ever turn blue.

Kvothe is a noble himself. It's almost certain that Meluan Lackless is his aunt and she hates Ruh because her sister (Kvothes mom) ran away with Arliden. That will likely be a book 3 topic.

5:54 The Rannish boy calls the sword Kaysera the "poet killer", but NOT the poet-king killer. I think it's an important distinction. Given Kvothe's increasing comfort with killing, I think several individuals have it coming. The king is one. A poet is another. An angel is a third. Personally, I think these will be three distinct incidents. But, I also don't think these will be the ONLY three deaths. DoS is going to be a bloodbath. Kvothe will take Gran's advice to heart (and then some) - "Some folk need killing. That's all there is to it."

    • @CapturedInWords

The only character we know as capable with poetry is Sim, though, so that makes me wonder if his friendship with Sim sours, e.g. if one of K’s schemes backfires to harm Fela. Also remember Kvothe has already dealt with 2 of the 3 wise man’s fears, the moonless night when he meets Felurian and the sea in storm. The only one left is wrath of a gentle man, which sounds like Sim.

Say what you will about Pat, I think when this is done, it will be one of the greatest fantasy stories of all time. Maybe the reason his fans are still engaged and interested is because regardless of how long we have to wait, no one is writing at the level Pat did for NoTW and WMF. I read a lot of fantasy, and no one currently writing is at the level Rothfuss was when he wrote those two books, and slow regard of silent things. The Narrow Road Between Desires is showing up at my house tomorrow, and I'm as excited as I was when WMF came out.

There is no way he closes the story well with one book. WMF moved the story an inch. To get in the GOAT conversation you have to have run a marathon and NotW is the first 10 miles, WMF is an inch, so book 3 needs to be impossibly great to cover the distance.

I swear by the light of the moon I fell in love with a Denna, just like our red headed friend, I fell in love, had my heart broken, reunited, and she had secret patrons. Then, she disappeared. I wish it had stayed like that. Alas, it turns out she went to Alaska, and we re connected, but something had slipped. I tell you this only because, when we dream of something that is so out of reach, so fleeting but compelling, there may be a reason. I miss the mystery of her, but cherish the memories of our adventures which ranged from Florida to San Francisco, and even Montana. Oh, she also looked very much as described. yet another reason Pat hit me so hard. All of this played out over 50 years.

  • @nf6386

Great video! A few extra mysteries I’d like to clear up: Who is caudicus’s patron or is he acting in his own to wipe out the Calanthis (aristocrats or birds in their stead)? has Kvothe beaten the Cthaeae somehow (has Maedre broken that tree?) or still living out its curse of tragedy? what’s the Yll connection behind K and D’s interest in the language and K’s Yllish appearance with red hair? Are Kilvin’s magic warding stones which create a force field barrier related to the “husband’s rocks” or doors of stone which seal Lanre in? How can Haliax be up and about if Lanre is stuck behind the door, is it just some part of that character’s soul? What’s the last line of that poem about the way stones, do they lead to “hell”? Or “Fariniel”? What is the correct translation of the words above the archive entrance, I’m suspecting it’s not really “the desire for knowledge changes a man” but rather “desire for knowledge can corrupt a man”, or “knowledge is the desire of the corrupted/changed/Chandrian” where the base “Rhinta” refers to the corrupting change which the Chandrian have undergone. And what is K’s heart’s desire? I think it’s his bloodline and family, this is the critical gap in his life when his troop dies, and the discovery of his Lackless ancestry is the solution which causes so much drama and tragedy. That might link with “valeritas” over the 4 plate door, meaning “those most worthy” but also “that which we value most [is behind this door]”. And I really hope Haliax is K’s father and has flaming red hair under the shadow.

I feel what really was needed by this point was a tie-in novel running in parallel with the past storyline from another POV of another character giving us hints or direct sightings of the Chandrian because they've been way too absent (yes even if they're in disguise, they're not there narratively, even if they are in retrospect. That doesn't address them missing now).

Rothfuss isn't the first person to spend 10 years getting a book out, far from it. Since Wise Mans Fears release he has had 2 kids, lost 2 parents, and in the background of his life his fans grew increasingly impatient and entitled about book 3 coming out, adding on more and more pressure for him to make it "perfect". Rothfuss is a human being, and writing isnt all he does with his life, and because it is art, he can't just force it. The charity stream chapter is the only thing fair to fault him on, though he came out and explained and apologized already, so everyone should just grow up and move on. Everyone getting angry about all this clearly won't be angry by the time book 3 comes out so why waist energy on that anger now.

I'm guessing your custom images are made in Midjourney, I'd recommend trying out A1111 if you haven't already, gives you alot more precision. A couple of quick points, Kvothe never specifically states he kills a Poet King. We know Kvothe returns to the Fae as this has been confirmed by Pat, we also know he visits Junpui, either on his way to Renere, or possibly on his way to the Pirate Isles to pay the Jackis family a visit. We don't know for certain Kvothe has lost his powers completely, this could be a ploy to lure in an enemy, playing a 'beautiful game' by laying a trap. Nit-picks aside, really great video, hope you continue to make more.

That said it is time to crap or get off the toilet. It is a shame when an artist looses their passion they start with and rarely is it ever found again.

I understand why people are getting impatient about book 3. I am as well. However, ( I'm not the most avid reader) but never have I ever read any book(s) that required me to read them so closely that are both so beautiful and mysterious. I can't fathom the amount of skill, work, and dedication that has gone into something like this. I think any "fan" who expects Rothfus to just bust the 3rd book out truly doesn't get how deep these books are. I get it though, it's been 10 years, BUT combine an author who is a perfectionist with real life problems such as depression, anxiety, burnout, and just personal life in general, I think we should cut him a break. I also understand about the charity chapter... Rothfus did not handle that well by any stretch of the imagination.. but again... As one who has gone through many mental health battles, I can understand collapsing instead of following through on things. I don't care how long it takes to read book 3 so long as I'm still alive to do it. Which gives Pat 40 plus years to do it 😊

I think the answers to your 3 statements could be as follows:
    1. Who is the king killed by Kvothe?
I think kvothe, who if he is the son on the lackless heir, is 4th in line to the throne. Perhaps so.ething happens to the penetant king, his heirs and Alvaron but Kvothe who has shut away his name and true self, kills himself, therefore, the king.
    2. What's in the thrice locked chest.
I believe, psychologically speaking, Kvothe is locked in the chest and Kote is the result. The shadow cloak, his ancient sword, lamp, rings etc etc are all in that chest. Everything that made him who he was. The chest can only be opened by the name of the elements used and therefore, was never supposed to be re-opened. Kvothe is dead.
    3. What's in the lackless box?
Almost certainly, this is the stone which Selitos used to blind Lanre (Haliax). Maybe the Lackless were Selitoses house?
    Intesting questions!

What if Kvothe is the King that he kills?
I believe I heard in another one of your videos that if he is indeed a Lackless that he would have a better claim to the throne than Ambrose.
If he figured it out, became king, and either failed or didn’t want it so he faked his death - what better way to insult him than to name him the “Poet King”, a name he would despise.

With how often things get attributed to Kvothe and various events conflated, I think king Roderick Calanthis's death is either pinned on Kvothe (maybe by Ambrose? Who Kvothe punishes for it and is thereafter the Penitent King?) or Kvothe is using it to his advantage. Kvothe did kill several calanthis, the little birds that he used to test the Maer's medicine. There's no way they would have the same name unintentionally.

I'm pretty certain at this point that it's going to be Ambrose who is the king of Vintas, and I'm also certain that Ambrose is not responsible for a FRACTION of the things Kvothe accuses him of. In the art of storytelling, you don't waste lines on unimportant comments, especially with a writer as talented as Rothfuss. Therefore, there is a purpose to Kvothe's friends almost unanimously and repeatedly questioning Kvothe when he jumps to his conclusions that Ambrose is behind everything that happens to him. This is always based on VERY flimsy evidence based upon their first encounter and Ambrose doing a petty thing of getting him kicked out of his accommodations and banned from the library. Even Count Threpe questions Kvothe about this, and as a Count, Threpe is "in the know" about the political machinations of the wealthy elite. He is incredibly skeptical that someone, even as powerful as Ambrose could prevent Kvothe from finding ANY patron.
Coincidentally, we have two options here if we accept this - either someone ELSE is downtalking Kvothe to nobles in a way that would get all of them to not endorse him, OR Threpe himself isn't actually looking for a patron and just so HAPPENS to find one when the opportunity presents itself to send Kvothe to Vintas.
However, there was an excellent opportunity for someone to witness the animosity between Kvothe and Ambrose and to exploit it to manipulate Kvothe and that would be Puppet and Master Lorren, two suspected Amyr agents (based on Puppet's candles being a warning signal for Chandrian) and both of them knew that Kvothe had used a candle in the Archives and they would have known who was on duty at the time to allow him to enter with one. The fact that Ambrose was not reprimanded for this event is also a loose thread here that indicates a conspiracy - Lorren would have known that he would have needed to let Kvothe pass with a candle.
The entire mommet incident (also questioned by Kvothe's friends) is also based entirely on happenstance. Any agent of the Amyr (or anyone else) would have known of Kvothe's animosity towards Ambrose, and Kvothe was not exactly subtle at sneaking around observing Ambrose' activities. All someone would need to do to convince Kvothe that Ambrose was behind his attack would be to coincide their attacks with when Ambrose was out of public. The mommet was also never found and was only assumed to be destroyed.
So ALL of that baggage there, could have been Amyr, or other third party agents, acting against Kvothe to keep him desperate and paranoid enough to be manipulated, all while pinning blame onto the lightning rod which is Ambrose. And like always, Kvothe is going to jump to a conclusion about Ambrose that's going to get him murdered and the Penitent King will be installed on his vacant throne.
The irony of this is that the Jackis family is set up to be suss pirates who are suspected of killing off members of the royal line in some attempt to get the throne of Vintas, BUT what if that is a larger scale false reputation they gained just because they were jackasses and the Penitent King is the one killing off the royal family? Kvothe would be the perfect tool to manipulate to kill off the last royal in line for the throne above the penitent king.

I have heard a theory that it was Threpe. He was secretly a friend of Ambrose, and bandits attacted his ship because Threpe knew which ship he would be traveling on. He and Ambrose wanted to kill him.
And it sounds an interesting storyline. Why didn't Kvothe tell it? He is a good storyteller, so he knew it would be better to put it away for later as a big plot twist.

I'd love to learn the answer to the question at the heart of Kvothe, "Where are the Amyr?" That will probably become clear as we learn more about the Maer's connection to the Amyr, the Chandrian, and Denna's patron.
I'm also curious about the Chancellor's mysterious illness that led to Master Hemme becoming Chancellor. It was awfully convenient and could be malfeasance.
I can't wait to see Kvothe, the Maer, and Maluen learn that Kvothe is the son of Natalia Lackless. I hope that Kvothe tells Maluen how much Laurian and Arliden loved each other and how they died.
I hope Kvothe discovers that Threpe set him up to drown on the journey to Vintas.
    Still more questions:
What is the third heartbeat that Felurian breathed into Kvothe? By accepting her shaede is he beholden to her? Does Kvothe return to Felurian? If so, does he ever leave?

Questions In my mind (I'm a pretty new reader of these books so apologies if these have been resolved) :
The link between kvothe and the wind as a force
Is kvothe one of the 4 elements (fire) and who might the 3 other elements be if that is a theme
Is kvothe's complexity that he embodies 2 elements, fire and wind, a very dangerous mix
Relation of copper the mineral/element to kvothe, his hair colour would be called copper in Ireland.
Ambrose's surname seems too close to iax/jax to be coincidence, has that been resolved
Dena's reference to another kind of magic of writing things down that then become true, what is that all about (? links to storytelling and the move from oral to written story telling and thus to the chronicler? ). Is that how her patron calls her.
The connection between name changing and
'self'- dom may link to basts comments about kvothe 'becoming' the innkeeper kote -how long has kote been living under that name. Name-changing and naming and names is deep in the mix (luckless lackless locheee seem linked variants to be thought about, as we seem clear kvothe mum was a lackless) .
Why the librarian 'paid attention' by turning and looking at him when kvothe said his father's name,- is that him showing some pre knowledge of that dad, and is that the real reason he bans kvothe from the archives, (in case he brings some family history!/knowledge to the 4 plate door?)
Is abnethy still alive cos he heard the song too, has kvothe not tried to find out???
Is kvothe lanre? (the jumping from the window to avoid enemies is basically the same story, but told in a different key, as seems to be the case for many of the stories kvothe/kote tells chronicler-gritty reality compared to the mythic/heroic versions)
Is there any link between songs about the chandrian and wedding parties and the decimation by the chandrian following such occasions)

    Interesting. Enjoyed that.
That said, I write this as a reminder to not use my audible credits on old epics left undone for years. My bad, I should have done a little more research after getting that suggestion.
After George's laziness or lack of concern for his readers, it's irritating to, once again, be burned by another author's books containing undone stories. I get it. Real life happens. Yet, now, I can also see what a careless and amateur author is. It makes me weary of new authors.
Stories worth their ink have a beginning, middle, and end. There are books that have stories within stories like Tanith Lee's, Nights Master, book 1 of the 5 books Tales from the flat earth. Each can be read without leaving you hanging. Keep reading and you see the pattern, the forshadowing, the mystery unfolds naturally and unexpectedy without the use of tricks and teasers.

Hey all, can someone tell me how Auri knew where Kvothe lived, specifically his room to take care of him that night? Also, there’s something either inconsistent or fishy (or both) about how Devi revealed that someone would have paid a lot for Kvothe’s blood. She’s very confidential about the others who borrow from her (suspected even Denna and/or Denna’s charming poet). How would someone have known Devi was in possession of his blood then? We know she had a less than favorable history with Ambrose, but it’s just not clear to me (although it is not explicitly stated that it was Ambrose or someone in his employ that asked about it or if that took place at the time of the selling of the plum Bob). Just a few questions that may be in the text that I’ve missed and thought I’d ask to other lore seekers. Thanks

I assumed Kvote need to remember/learn the name of the materials for the locks…the third being wind. Then it opens to give him back his name. He hasn’t been Kvothe for some time. His name is in the chest. He is the 7th Chandrian now since he killed Sinder. And he keeps the evil locked in the Doors of Stone

No book series that I've ever read wraps up all mysteries and so cleanly that you want. If we get answers to some of these then we should count ourselves lucky,!

I think the dilemma Patrick Rothfus faces is that there's no way to cram all of this information in just one book without rushing the story or making the book about 2,000 pages long. He wants it to be a trilogy and he had planned it to be so, but realistically, it probably needs two more books.

I doubt the Cthaeh will ever be mentioned again in the story. It severed it's purpose in the story to set doubt in Kvothe mind, strike fear in Bast for us to understand the gravity, and mysterious enough to keep us wanting more. Also, behind the Doors of stone I feel is a disappointing end... maybe some limited book as that is in Lorren's control as Elodin said roughly, "Doors of stone... gosh i remember when that had me dying to to know..." and later, "Door of stone, no that is Lorren domain and secret to share." There is no clue that it gives any kind of hint at a tomb that is only reading into what you want to see.
He does have to answer what is in the boxes.. as the famous writing style says if you mention a gun in a book you must use it.

Anyone want to compile a list of what should be in the books? We can set up an AI and feed it all of Pat's writing, combine it with our chosen summary and theory, and let it barf out a Frankenstein of a third book. You could organise a voting system what needs to go in, and which theory to chose. It could be a potentially big project.
Obviously that "book" would be entirely fan made, and only Pat would have legal rights to it since we're building on his world. But still, given the hours people spend on theory around the book - it might be worthwhile for some. Also, I want to stress that this is a ludicrous idea, just to entertain ourselves while we wait for the third book - and that in no way I want to put extra pressure on Pat.
p.s.: A thing that needs to be added to the list is the barrow king. That's in the preface.

I think its perfectly clear that Rothfuss is in over his head with the 3rd book because of the things you mentioned in the video. There is literally no way he could explain the ending of that story and sufficiently answer all the huge questions he has built up over the first two book. It might not even be possible to explain all that in two more books.

I'll be happy to read 3 more if it helps him write it.

Great content as always, however I would ask that you consider altering your Chandrian visuals to remove the flashing effects, as someone with epilepsy I feel I and others could be adversely affected. Thanks :)

Still the series that drives the most obsession with me. I could watch videos discussing kingkiller everyday.

I thought the doors of stone were the doors in the library (with copper in them)? Or did I miss something?
I think Bast is Kvothe’s son with Felurian.

It could be those doors. It's likely that those are the doors being spoken of. But the Greystones are referred to as doors to the Fae realm often enough. Rothfuss also likes to play with words, so until it comes out, we aren't sure exactly what the "doors of stone" are

They mentioned the Chandrian in the present day in book two when Kvothe recited the story he heard from the Adem. They aren't dead, because Bast worried that the Chandrian would come find them after Kvothe said their "true" names. But then Kvothe reassured him by saying the Chandrian couldn't track them down by saying their names only once.
