      Great job with the theories and the channel!! I have a other theorie about Bast however. I Believe that Bast is Kvothe's father. The Edema Ruh camp often allongside greystones which we all know are actually waystones to the fae en vise versa. Therefore it is possible that that bast at one time met Kvothe's mother and seduced her. This also ties in quite nicely with the moment in book one where Arliden's jokingly questions Kvothe's parentage by asking Laurien if she slept with a god or something. It would also explain his almost fatherly love and protectiveness regarding Kvothe.
      That also explains Bast's secretive demeanor because he knows how much pride Kvothe takes in him being of the Adema Ruh, and the origin of Kvothe's strange fae features.
      also, I believe strongly that the Adema Ruh and the Adem (of the nation Ademre) are historrically related, just as the Aiel and the Tuatha'an are in the wheel of time. Hunted travellers with a close connection to the fae would explain a lot of the adem culture.
      Question, do you think it is possible that by stealing the moon the world in the kinkiller novel's is in a sort of time reapeting time lapse ever since? Time seems to play a central role in the books (excuse me for my bad english, I am Dutch).

    • @CapturedInWords
      @CapturedInWords  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! That definitely could be! I do think Kvothe is part fae, I feel like the story hints at that on several occasions. It would explain his dramatic fey-like temper with eyes that change color due to his moods. It would also explain his red hair since genetically speaking it's pretty tough to get red hair from two parents who don't have red hair. I remember somewhere in the books it's mentioned that red-haired children were once burned for being demons (and we know in this world there are no demons, just fae). So unexplained red-headedness could be caused by fae-human parentage.
      For all we know Reshi could be a loving term used between a father and son, and that could be why Bast cares so much for Kvothe. I actually like the theory that Bast is his father more than the other way around. Another thought I just had, is that Remmen might be Kvothe's father which would make Bast his bro that he's trying to introduce to the human world.
      I like your thoughts on the Edema Ruh and Adem being connected, this is something I've always thought as well. I think they share the same ancestors. It's interesting that the Adem view music in such a fundamentally opposite way to the Ruh. Even using excessive facial expressions is considered barabaric to the Adem, which leads me to believe that the Edema Ruh were those who chose to rebel and ended up as singers and performers.
      Interesting, I never thought about time repeating itself in the Kingkiller chronicle due to the moon being stolen, but I think that definitely could be a possibility. I've been wondering lately if maybe the stories about Taborlin are actually prophetic. People have been telling all these stories about Taborlin, and Kvothe is slowly checking them off because he's the one that the prophecy is talking about. Idk. I think a lot of the stories and characters mirror one another, I'm not sure if this is due to time literally repeating itself, reincarnation, or if it's just a story telling device Rothfuss is using to get people thinking.

    I know this is the Bast video, but the mention of Taborlin reminded me of something I had thought of a while back.
    I have a theory about Taborlin that I haven't seen genuinely reflected upon. Taborlin is not an ancient figure, but a prophesied one. All the stories of Taborlin are told in the past tense, but one of the single most integral parts of the world is that lingual drift is a huge problem for keeping a narrative coherent. I tried charting out all the languages as much as I could and there are a huge amount of loan words, derivations, etc.
    This relates to Taborlin's story in that if Taborlin's story was prophesized by an ancient figure, (for path of least resistance, let's say The Cthaeh) thousands of years ago, then over time the person who heard that story would tell it to whoever would listen. Those people might repeat it, even just as an account of something they heard from a crazy guy they met in the woods. Over time, future tense became past tense and across various translations of the story, nuance was lost.
    The prologue of Doors of Stone mentions a tabor beat, a term I hadn't heard before. I looked it up and found that a tabor is an archaic term for a snare drum, so Taborlin is derived from tabor line, like a drum line or drum beat. This leads me to believe that "Taborlin the Great" is a mistranslation of a term that more literally means "great rolling drum beat", a phrase that is evocative of the sound of rolling thunder that accompanies distant thunder.
    As trite as it is, I believe Taborlin is a foretelling of Kvothe because it seems more likely that he is ticking boxes of a prophecy than coincidentally having so many parallels with an ancient hero.

    • @CapturedInWords
      @CapturedInWords  2 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      I really like this theory! I've wondered if maybe Kvothe is a reincarnation of Taborlin, but I like your idea that the stories of Taborlin are actually prophecy and Kvothe is checking off the list. It doesn't actually seem that far fetched. I noticed the mention of 'tabor beat' in the prologue as well and thought about Taborlin but I like the way that you connect it. Awesome theory!

      'Strictly Fantasy', another You-tuber, did a video, 'True Identity of Taborlin The Great?' back in mid-2020 presenting the same theory - that Taborlin is really a prophesy; or rather a tale created in the past to nudge Kvothe's choices in the future.

    • @NachoGamerMinecraft
      @NachoGamerMinecraft 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Wow, now that you mentioned that "tabor" is an archaic term for a snare drum, in spanish "tambor" means drum. I never thought about it in that way.

    I've always though that Bast's motivation is that he is in love with Kvothe, he always speaks of him so highly and warmly. Him being Fae, maybe by the third book we get a translation of reshi, Rothfuss has always been cheeky about what that means. The main piece of evidence is how he refers to Kvothe as "his" which only Denna and Felurian do. And in one of his streams Pat said something about how he wished he included more LGBT characters but how he had a few we didn't know about (honestly that was years ago and by then I already had this theory in mind).

    • @SingingSealRiana

      could be very well be true. Heroworship and being his son both do not really work in my eyes and as a creature driven by desire and with a tendency towords selfishness being willing to take someones pain and wound . . . thats quite a display of love. There was no need to do that, he did not gain anything from it, it did not serve the goal of turning Kvothe back into who he had been . . . it was plain caring for him and guilt, which is extreamly hard to inflict on a fay

    • @ninottorracastanyes8996
      @ninottorracastanyes8996 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      It always stuns me how many few people have this theory. It was painfully obvious to me that Bast is in love with Kvothe. Not "painfully obvious" as in "ho ho, I know for sure I'm right and anyone who disagrees is a dummy", but as in "this is so close to how I feel when I deeply fall in love with someone that I can't think of any other possible outcome and wonder why is such an uncommon thought", if that makes sense.

    • @SingingSealRiana
      @SingingSealRiana 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@ninottorracastanyes8996 yeah, feel you there. The he is his child theory is very wonkey thinking it through and as we learned from the fae, they are mostly selfish beings with their actions dedicated by desire with little concept of morality. The fact that he percives harm to himself as the lesser evil to his reshi being hurt is a very big thing.
      He showes open dislike against Denna that looks quite a lot like jalousy.
      the argument that he cant be in love, for he is interessted in women does not hold water either. Yes, he does, but love and sex apear as very seperate concepts to him/fae/in the story. Kvothe makes clear between him and felurian was no love, Bast shows no romantic interest in any woman and in "the lightning tree" he tries to set up Kvothe with a girl he himself slept with . . . what pisses him of about denna is the emotional investment.
      whatever it is a romantic crush or not, he very clearly loves kvothe more then anything

    Bast is the son of Felurian, obviously. As for Remmen being Taberlain the Great, I'm not liking it. I think that Bredon is Remmen and since they were friends, of a sort, I think Bast is learning from his father's friend in a 'fostering' sor t of way. I used to think that Bast Was Bredon but since I favor Bredon for being the patron of Denna, I don't think Bast was that, since he was only supposed to ahve 'seen' her, not been close to her. If his father was her patron, though, it would make sense that he could have seen her once...
    I think Kvothe has finally learned how to Play a Beautiful Game. I think he knows that Bast will 'betray' him with the best of intentions and he is using that for a piece of the puzzle that is his master plan. Basically, Bast will betray Kvothe in hopes of sparking him back to the way he was... Kvothe knows this and it is part of his actual plan. The victim of his real plan, Lanre I suspect, will follow those clues that Bast is leaving out there and think he is going to finally do away with Kvothe, but he will fall into the trap of the Waystone inn... a place where Fae can actually Die. That is the reason why the Skin changer didn't 'smoke out' at the end. It couldn't, and now Kvothe knows his trap works but he played dumb about it. In fact, I think he intentionally lured an enemy fae to his inn to test the theory of his design. He didn't intend for the innocent guy to die but his plan is more important. Kvothe pretended not to know how 'bad' the Cthaeh is but i think he knew all along and has planned for it. I suspect that the waystone Inn's special qualities are a blind spot for the Cthaeh too In fact, it is possible that the Cthaeh is the actual main antagonist as it put Lanre on the path to be Haleax in the first place. Kvothe might actually blame the Cthaeh for his parent's deaths now and it may be the ultimate target of his trap...

Brilliant videos as always, some interesting theories here. I really enjoyed reading about him in The Lightning Tree as well, he's a very fun character to read. One of the things I'm most excited to find out with book 3 is how Kvothe and Bast met! I agree, I think Bast definitely knew about Kvothe beforehand. I think it's also possible that Bast is the demon Kvothe needs to trick before he gains his hearts desire. And possibly he tricked Bast into being his loyal servant/apprentice. Whatever way it goes, I'm excited for the day when I finally get to find out

    You mentioned Kvothe can be childish and that he has a good relationship with the kids in town and this reminded me how funny I find the fact that these kids are directly related to his idea of bringing Chronicler to Reshi.
    As you said, it's hinted in the books that it was Bast who leaked info to lure a writer over, but in The Lightning Tree we get how his idea appears. A kid named Kostrel gets mad at Bast for being vague with the answers he wants to get about the fae and tells Bast “Well maybe you should just write a book then (...)That’s what people do when they know every damn thing, isn’t it? They write it down so they can show off" And there's when Bast stops for a second to think if it’s worth the try 😂
    I also find endearing how this seems to hint that Bast thinks Kvothe knoes "every damn thing". He really really sees him in a high standard. I hope we can learn more of this in the future...

    I find it super interesting how it linked to Irish Folklore. I always thought Felurian was inspired by the Leanan Sidhe. A fairy that seduced mortal men, specifically artist, and for a time would inspire them to create great works of art. But she'd eventually drain them of all happiness and they'd die. I don't know if she was really part of Irish Folklore or if Yeats' simply made her up and claimed she was part of their lore.
    "Death is no escape from her. She is the Gaelic muse, for she gives inspiration to those she persecutes. The Gaelic poets die young, for she is restless, and will not let them remain long on earth-this malignant phantom."

      Yesss same here! I think that Felurian was inspired from Leanan Sidhe as well as succubi legends in general. I had wondered if Bast is the "demon" Kvothe had to trick to get his heart's desire. We see Kvothe playfully calling Bast a demon and then the reaction of Chronicler trying to bind him with iron. Maybe Kvothe made a deal (tricked) Bast similar to his arrangement with Felurian to win.

      I believe he is! I actually had that quote written down in my notes and completely forgot to mention it in the video, but I do believe that Bast is the demon he tricked. Honestly, I hung on to every word of this video like it was next breathe. I love you!
    My theory on Bast would be that maybe Kvothe is legendary in the from his time spent there, so much so that Bast grew up his whole life hearing about him? Maybe calling Felurians name was known to be impossible in the Fae right? So for decades his story rang whilst only being like 2 years or so, and Bast just thinks he’s this Taborlin and Kvothes actually just trying to retire from a life of danger.
    Holy shit what if it is Felurians son and he went off to find Kvothe, but Kvothe doesn’t want to go back to the Fae so he just changed his name and hoped he wouldn’t have to come back to her because she wouldn’t find him. And then Bast is like “dude Felurian loved that guy, this is NOT that guy”

      I don't think so. Kvothe would've only been a young boy when he met her, so I personally think it's more likely that she just doesn't recognise him. (Also, she is mentioned to be considerably younger than Mayor Alveron, so it's possible she was only a child herself when she met Kvothe). I think she was just genuinely offended when she found out Kvothe was Edema Ruh.

    Maybe thats what he is training to do. Fight the chandrian.
    Also cinder says " somebodies parents where singing entirely the wrong kinds of songs" maybe some of the roo are singers, especially the troop leaders.

    Reshi means father, and Bast is the son of Kvothe and the Faelurian. I mean he could easily have grown up before leaving that realm and time will have passed for him differently.

    Is bast being controlled by a skin dancer, maybe even the Cthaeh itself. Bast sent people on a path to bring chronicler to the waystone. That is something the Cthaeh would do. If Kvothe bound the Cthaeh by giving up two letters of his name then the Cthaeh would seek him out to unbind himself. This goes along with Bast's secret intentions. To restore Kote's name and unlock the thrice looked chest. Would be a good ending to the doors of stone.

    • @Gundam00257
      @Gundam00257 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think it's pretty clear he kills them. About the rhyme, I took it as a sort of fae version of 'eeny meeny miny moe'. He first uses it to decide which drink to pick and later to decide which soldier to attack first. He's pointing a burning branch back and forth between them as he sings it. In the next chapter there are sounds described coming from outside the inn, one 'something almost like the far-off shrieking of an owl'. I believe that was the soldier screaming as Bast attacked him.

    • @vino3741
      @vino3741 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the eeny meeny miny moe makes complete sense. I've never "read" this book but I have listened to the audio book at least 8x and, I think, the more I listened to it the more "numb," I guess you could say, I got when it came to that part, skipping over it in my mind. I remember thinking in the beginning that he killed them but I guess I analyzed it a bit too much and sort of talked myself out of that later on, thinking "well, we don't actually really know what happens for sure." So when Jay mentioned it, I was like "wait, that was my orignal thought as well," but I couldn't remember exactly why. Anyow, much appreciated!

    • @SingingSealRiana
      @SingingSealRiana 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@vino3741 rationalising it away is tempting cause, he is with the hero, he is supposed to be a "good person" and murdering people for upsetting him does not a pear moraliy right. But he is a fae and they really do not have it with the concept of morals. Like the chronicler was warned, do not feel safe thinking of him as a human for he is not.

    We don't know about how biology works between faens and mortals but Bast being Kvothe's son is genetically impossible, yes he has black hair and blue eyes just like Felurian but he is dark skinned, not pale, and Pat mentioned it a billion of times, in other hand, we have Elodin, who is familiar to Fae, who is part Faen, who is dark skinned. Felurian don't knows about Taborlin the great, because Elodin/Taborlin, is known as Remmen in her universe. He changed his name several times so he is a goddamn proffesional name-changer.
    I also still think Bast and Kvothe are related somehow, I mean, "Elodin", "Taborlin", "Remmen", all these sound really similar to "Arliden" Pat knows how to play a beautiful game after all. Sithe, Amyr, Singers, If they are all 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆,-oh my shit, they are all 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆. Plus, no one noticed this mythical foreshadowing so I will say it, Bast, Egyptian godess of cats, her dutie was fighting with the god of chaos, a 𝘀𝗻𝗮𝗸𝗲 who was 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 by Ra. Well, this fact explains a bunch of things you guys did not notice. Ctaeh is a snake-like creature as it seems, he can 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘀, (for more information you should watch Jay's theory videos about Ctaeh.) Patrick Rothfuss is trying to make us realize why Bast is so obsessed with the subject of Ctaeh. Him fighting with Ctaeh symbolise 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗲!
