Desmond Doss was actually 5'5 and was very thin due to not being able to eat the rations as they conflicted with his vegetarianism. The fact he did all that while struggling past the point of exhaustion is nothing short of incredible.
The brilliance of his acting here is watching the adrenaline that was keeping him going wear off. He's still in survival mode when he first starts walking through the soldiers and then realizes he's safe and his body immediately shuts down and you see in his eyes the weight of what he just witnessed. It's beautiful
I like how the guy who bashed him said, "let's get this SOLDIER to a hospital tent right now". Clearly recognizing him as a soldier despite his lack of a weapon.
Excellent observation. If a person has never had so adrenaline in them that they are shaking from it, they might not know the kind of effects it has on the body and mind. The actor here begins that shaking as he is received into the arms of his comrades. It is as you say...the "shut down'/withdrawal, is evident even in his eyes - excellent acting.
Even the tears in his eyes, while the adrenaline is working your body "doesn't have time for emotion" then as soon as that wears off everything hits you at once, and the fact that this was portrayed through acting is amazing
As a former Army Medic, he is my hero. We learn about him in school. He is a legend in our books. No man epitomizes more bravery and selfless service than Desmond Doss. No one.

What’s crazy is this is a movie that’s based on a true story where they actually had to tone it back some and leave certain aspects out because the real story is actually too unbelievable. Mel Gibson thought the movie would be too unrealistic if he included some of the actual events like Doss having 17 pieces of shrapnel in his leg, rolling off the stretcher to patch up another wounded while being carried away, giving the stretcher to him, waiting 5 hours for them to get back to him during which he took a snipers round to his left arm, shattering it, to which he then made a splint for his arm with a broken rifle buttstock, and crawled 300 yards to a safety aid station. The movie also leaves out that he was actually under gunfire and mortar rounds the entire time. Doss saved 75 men in 12 hours, averaging 1 man down the cliff every 10 minutes.
When your strength has left you, and death is near, a man and his faith held true the words of his lord. He kept that truth held deeply, and for the many he gave a second life, those he saved, he was righteously saved himself by his belief.
In the ending, when the actual veterans were speaking, his former Captain was in tears speaking of him. This man went so far beyond what any human being should be capable of doing in service to both his country and his fellow man. Absolutely legendary.
A Virginia man, who did all he thought was right to do, without taking up arms because of his beliefs. I may not agree with those beliefs, but I can't help but respect and admire him.
What I find incredibly admirable is the fact that he didn’t care what side an injured soldier was on, he would try to save them as best as he could in those conditions. He also was reported to have dragged up to 75 of his injured comrades to safety whilst he himself had a broken limb, most likely his leg. Pure determination and passion for one’s fellow man when combined is a powerful mix, there’s no denying that, especially when hearing about what Doss did during his time in WW2
When he says “Let’s get this soldier to a hospital tent” it’s one of the most moving parts of the movie. It’s the first recognition that he is a part of the division and he is accepted by the group; albeit he had to go far past above and beyond to do so

The scene where he is walking down that trail with all those soldiers looking at him with such respect and concern, after he rescued so many dying soldiers really gets to my heart. After all the mocking he went through, the soldiers all finally realized Doss' worth and bravery as a medic soldier and showed respect to him.
and some of them still have that strange "evil look" in their eyes but were forced to oblige by stepping aside. Kinda reminds me of that old "Tares among the wheat" trope. Yes they're not genuine humans but they do have to respect a person who selflessly laid down his life on saving others just like the Son of Man.
It's so amazingly done as he pretty much is silent as soon as he comes down the ridge besides saying no when asked if he was hurt. The rest just allows you to soak up the moment without dialogue to tell you how to feel
I met Desmond doss at his home in Piedmont al. in1988. He was a very humble man living in a small mobile home. I spent around three hours talking to him and his wife.he invited me back but he passed before I was able to visit. Many years later when mel Gibson made the movie about his life, only then did I realize that I had been in the presence of unique greatness. Rest in peace Desmond. Hunter Phillips gadsden alabama

Well he's exhausted. There's no way to know if he has PTSD (unless it's public knowledge about him) all that adrenaline and lugging bodies in the heat for about a entire day is insane. You ever been so tired that you're extremely jumpy and can't comprehend easy things? He's like that times ten but a little rest can still fix that, not seeing his friends die but of course he'd be bothered by that for a long time.
it was actually a call back to one of the earlier scenes where he was beaten badly by his comrades. He was covered in blood yet he said he's not wounded.
I remember an interview with a soldier who served with Doss. They asked him if he'd have rather had another soldier with a gun in the platoon instead of Doss who wouldn't fight. He said Doss saved more lives than any other soldier could take, and that the official record of Doss' rescues was off by a few hundred.
That reminds me of that scene in Schindler’s List where Schindler breaks down and says that he could’ve saved more Jews even though he had went above and beyond.
I would venture to guess it’s a reference to our Faith; salvation comes from the Blood shed by Jesus Christ for the remission of our sins, and once saved we are instructed to be baptized in water, which is symbolic of the old man being laid to rest, and the new man being born in the spirit. To be accurate, baptism is only symbolic, it is not salvation, that happens when we accept Christ as our savior and are born again by the spirit. The death, burial and resurrection are the reasons we can be saved, and it all comes because of Jesus Christ. But I think the filmmakers wanted to invoke that idea, hence the blood and water, which John also writes in his Gospel at the crucifixion that when the Roman used the spear to pierce our Lord’s side out came blood and water.
@@franciscastiglione5832 no it was literally the blood from those he saved and those he couldn't. Battle fields like that were gruesome and fact he hid among dead at times to get past the enemy. Yea he was caked in blood, sweat, mud, and tears.
I love the way Desmond leans into his captain’s open hand at 6:01. Such a small gesture but it’s basically the defining moment of the whole movie: this small, isolated kid who was outcast by all of his fellow soldiers has finally proven himself at great cost. His leader stretches out his hand to comfort him and Desmond embraces it, allowing himself to feel a moment of peace and acceptance. It’s such a poignant little moment
The whole interaction I thought was very reminiscent of a person trying to get a scared dog to come around that he won’t hurt him and the trust finally appears through the desperation. Just saying. But even without that comparison, which came to me the third time I watched this film, I noticed that gesture of reaching out & acceptance.. and Doss leaning into it like he was finally allowed to rest and come to terms with everything he was put through. Made me cry from the sheer emotional wall I felt had finally broken down both in the movie and in myself since I hadn’t been nearly as emotional the entire movie until I reached that scene. This movie speaks to the underdogs in ways we don’t even realise or comprehend was even there until moments like this happen. Forever one of my favourite movies, and the real Desmond Doss is an example of how Not All Heroes Wear Capes Or Shoot Guns & Even In Times Of War There Is No Rule Saying You Must Give Up Your Faith To Serve Your People. I’m Australian btw and I can honestly tell you that I haven’t yet met another Aussie - that knows of Desmond Doss - that doesn’t pay him the utmost respect he rightly deserves. Rest In Peace, Sir. You’ve done more than most in your service, both in war and in faith, and you shall live on forever in His Kingdom and in our hearts.
My favorite part is at the end when he walks through the group of soldiers. They all look at him with disbelief, wondering how HE survived. Such a good movie in all.
I love that too, except that I saw it as them looking at him with disbelief because they had all been told: "do not look to this man to save your life". They thought he was a coward and now they see that he is probably the bravest man any of them will ever meet in their respective lifetimes.
His platoon before = This guy doesn't want to fire a gun, how is he gonna be of any use? His platoon afterwards = We ain't going anywhere without Doss from now on

The concern in Howell’s voice saying “Doss is still up there” shows the respect Desmond has earned from his ranking officers after everything he’s done for their unit
I always notice how when the captain puts his hand on Garfield’a cheek, he leans into it, I love the detail and the emotion displayed here. It feels too genuine
Look up a guy named William Swenson he will see the Medal of Honor in Afghanistan there's a video of him putting one of his wounded sergeants on a helicopter. He kisses the sergeant on the cheek. There would be a lot of people including many here would call that gay..... There was nothing gay about it he was letting that Sergeant know how he felt about him by the way that Sergeant died of his wounds.
People say that we need more people like Desmond doss on the battlefield to help save people in wars. But really we need more people like Desmond doss so that wars don't happen.

I loved that part! And, can you really blame him. After seeing all that he did, experiencing all of THAT, even the most hardened of men would let their walls crumble, even if only to experience something like Love, Compassion, and Kindness.

This guys story is so outrageous it's hardly even believable. 75 people this guy saved without firing a single bullet. Tell me of someone more deserving of a Medal Of Honor than this guy.
Don't forget that he also saved the Japanese wounded as well. He didn't see a enemy that was trying to kill him only a short time ago but a life that needed to be saved.
A Japanese sniper also said in his memoirs after the war that he had doss in his sights three separate times and his gun jammed every time. I’m not religious but It’s hard to believe something wasn’t up there protecting him on that ridge that day.

Weirdest thing is the closest gameplay I've seen to that is in a Funhaus video with James and Adam playing the WW1 Battlefield game. I think it was Adam that played full combat medic, only reviving downed soldiers without shooting anybody, and took their team to victory. James played full combat mechanic, but didn't do so well with that.
If someone told you there once lived a man that saved 75 wounded soldiers. You'd say "Wow thats amazing! holy shit!" If then that someone told you it was in one battle... you would go into denial.
And then there were reports from a Japanese sniper who claimed his rifle kept jamming each time he pulled the trigger while aiming at an American medic (believed to be Doss)
One thing they got wrong here was that Doss was severely wounded. He took a grenade to the leg and a compound fracture to his arm. He used a rifle stock as a splint for his arm, tended his own wounds, and then crawled 300 yards to safety.
That’s later in the movie when they go back up for the last time so in the movie he kicked it away from of his guys instead what really happened was he was taking cover with another individual and and grenade was near them and he used his foot/leg to cover it and it was already the end of the movie and didn’t have a lot of time left so they didn’t show how he got shot in the arm on the stretcher and then had them leave him to take someone else in a more critical position who needed it more and had treated his own wounds and then have them come back for him he crawled 300 yards to and then was retrieved to be brought the rest of the way but yea all that stuff got cut out of the movie because it was suppose to be at the end of the movie and it would’ve been a second climax in the movie the way they went had a smooth decrescendo for the film but it missed some pretty amazing details about Desmond during the final battle in the process
That was after he goes back up the next day on his Sabbath. Which was a day he requested never to work, but after saving those 75 men, his own battalion refused to go back up on the ridge without him. He went with them anyways. That's when he took a grenade to the leg.

the director cut it because he thought that the viewers would find it unrealistic or unbelievable BUT personally i wish they still included it. But as someone above said, it couldve been another climax while the movie is alr coming to end
Grubbitoes he didn’t really carry many people, he mainly dragged them. Which is considerably harder due to friction. But if he stood and ran with the wounded he would likely be shot
@@hfdshrimp3973 I mean theirs more work but you do have the advantage of being able to drop and then start dragging in a couple of seconds and it's also really hard to carry someone who has been shot in the front. Stuff would start leaking out and you'd beat the shit out of the wounded area causing them to flip all over the place like a fish out of water with pain.
I love the repeated “you’re making a bowline not building a bra boy” back to the sgt, instantly just conveys to him that yes he was listening, yes he did learn, and that’s all it takes for the sgt to instantly give his trust over to him entirely. There are some wonderful, heroic and beyond human things that Desmond done that many, if not most of us, wouldn’t have the strength to accomplish, and we should be grateful to live in a time where we aren’t called upon like him. But I think we can learn some simple things from him, listening, learning, are two of the most simple things you can do for those around you. Getting someone the most perfect gift because of a comment they made ages ago but you remembered, or simply, nodding in agreement and saying you remember, when they tell you an upsetting story you’ve heard before. Not to get them to be quiet, but to let them know you are listening.
5:16 from this part. This is the part that deserves all the Oscars. This shows the actual emotional state of war shock. Perfectly performed! These are the initial mental disturbances that later result in what most PTSD-suffering soldiers do after demobilization.
And the scene where his legs get weak and he sits down is exactly what would happen when the adrenaline is finally wearing off. Andrew Garfield truly is an unbelievably talented actor.
I think, also how this movie showed, some of his PTSD wasn't just from enemy soldiers. He got bullied and attacked because of his beliefs. He might have had those fight or flight instincts no matter friend or foe.

He did however, win the Golden Globes award which is the people's vote. The Oscar is the academy vote. Since Mel Gibson is poison in Hollyweird, I'm not surprised he and Garfield didn't win an Oscar. Oscars are so politically driven that the best don't usually win. Everyone knows that Hollyweird has their own agenda and they often award a film/actor/etc to support their agenda. ie. Steven Spielberg is probably the greatest director ever, but has only one Oscar for directing. He deserves at least 10. We can all make educated guesses as to why he only has one for Schindler's List. He definitely deserved Oscars for the Color Purple, Saving Private Ryan, Jaws, E.T, A.I., Catch Me If You Can, Band of Brothers, Empire of the Sun, Raiders of the Lost Ark.
The let’s get this soldier to a hospital tent was an incredibly moving line. He didn’t carry a weapon so he wasn’t a conventional soldier but he was accepted as one of the team after his heroism. Desmond Doss 1000% earned his Medal of Honor

I literally cried when I saw a video about hacksaw ridge. Dosses dedication and drive for saving others is truly inspiring. The fact that he could't touch a gun and still was willing to go to battle field showcases just how much he believes in his ideals. Truly amazing man

The way the other soldiers looked at as he walked through… they knew they were in the presence of the greatest MoH recipient to ever receive the award.
The scene was foreshadowed earlier in the movie when soldiers on a road parted for a tank passing through. The inference being that Doss was given the same reverence for toughness that a tank would get.
Is no one going to talk about how amazing Andrew Garfield delivered Desmond Doss’s role? His acting was so realistic and he totally deserved an oscar for this performance!
Andrew did a great job, his performance was amazing but what dragged the whole movie down (at least for me) was the fact that they tried to make it look realistic with all the "based on real events" talks but the realism was thrown out of window for stuff that might look cool but from realistic point of view it was complete nonesense - a soldier holding BAR with one hand, with other holding a torso as shield and runing and shooting (very accurately I might add) at the enemy...BARs were heavy as hell and had hell of a recoil, hitting a target with it at 20 meters while holding it with both hands and standing still was quite hard (it was most accurate when shooting from prone position with a bipod), shooting it with one hand (IF you somehow managed to shoot it that way) would most likely hurt your arm...dislocate something or break some bone. A sniper that lurks at field and he does not shoot at Doss the first time he walks by, the second time he hits him into helmet while Doss is moving, then the sniper hits a thrown helmet in mid-air (showing exceptional skill) and then missing two shots in a row at way bigger target (a person)? Well...weird but possible. Japanese soldiers with bolt-action rifles are not smart enough to make a short stop to shoot, they shoot while running, missing every shot while a wounded soldier with an SMG shooting in long bursts without any proper aiming while being dragged, hits (almost) every shot...no need for reloading or anything. Soldiers taking no cover, runing only with their rifles in hand being unable to catch up a soldier who drags another soldier? Bitch-slapping a live grenade away while kicking another one away, this one explodes like 2 meters away from Doss's face and all that happens to him is some light leg wound. The movie would have been great even without these unrealistic moments. When I saw these scenes the first time, I was actually laughing instead of being amazed (or whatever emotion it was intended to bring to the viewer) and that ruined the experience for me. One would say that after Fury got critized for this exact reasons, directors would try to avoid it in other war movies that try to look realistic.
Garfield took a very atypical individual and portrayed him with depth, courage and sincerity. Its a very strong performance, and the nomination was deserved, but in my opinion all of 2016's best actor nominees were great in their own way. Having seen the five nominees I may have cast my vote for Viggo, but the truth is anyone of them could have won and I'd be happy.
The fact that they toned down and left out some of his other feats because they thought people would think it was to unrealistic when in reality it did happen blew my mind.
What a great movie. It really hit home. My son served in Afghanistan. Two tours of duty. He made it home once, for Christmas, and then about a year later he full filled his contract. He was a medic with Airborne out of Fort Benning, Georgia. He received 3, actually 4 Purple Hearts before they decided he was a liability Now, he goes to school. They're footing the bil. He has a full pension, insurance and got a good deal on a home loan. I don't think it was worth it. He still walks with a limp and a cane sometimes. Still suffering from PTSD and is a different man than the boy we sent over there. War is horrible!!!
5:16 gives me goosebumps everytime. he’s so traumatized by what he’s been through in such a short amount of time, adrenaline running through his veins, completely numb to tiredness. even when he’s safe with his fellow soldiers his mind is still wired to the war.
Not only that, but his adrenalyne starts to cooldown, thats why he nearly falls; and presses his head to the commanders hand, feeling of comfort and security knowing a higher rank is looking at him and knowing what he did.
Love that you can actually see the effect of adrenaline in him. Literally on his last legs, exhausted. The adrenaline from fear and his will keeping his legs up. The moment his mind recieves the comfort of his fellow soldiers the legs were like "ok we can let get now"
I might not be religious, but this scene showed me exactly how good religion can be for people. There's so much shit about religion in the media nowadays, but this man, Desmond Doss is a real and beautiful example of how we as people can utilize religion to be something beautiful. He sincerely believes(d) God was there helping him help others, and that's incredibly beautiful to me. Also, can we just talk about Andrew Garfield's performance in this? I was blown away when those end credits started rolling. Absolutely beautiful acting, wow.

Why isn't there a statue of this guy in Washington? He is an example of the nobility of the human spirit, self-sacrifice and love. There are few today who could hold a candle to this man.

He refused on religious grounds to carry any weapon. He was truly one of the bravest men in the war He literally earned the Medal of Honor for his duty to his fellow soldiers in combat.
The scene that gets me is when he reaches safety and everyones looking at him like they should have been the whole time. That moment if them looking at him and accepting him not only as a soldier but as a hero or a guardian angel. It gets me every time
I come from a long line of military and every one of them says the same thing... Once you come out of that zone it's like someone whips the ground from under you and your knees become non existant
6:10 what I love about this shot is that the Soldiers that initially treated him like crap, now look at him in awe because not only did he spent 24 hours on the Ridge by himself bringing down survivors, but Doss is the one that saved their life
What was even more amazing was that there was a confirmed story of a Japanese soldier who had him dead to rights when he was getting the wounded down the cliff, and the soldier's gun jammed when he tried to take the shot.
The fact he was bullied harshly in boot camp but nevertheless held onto his faith and morals when it was time to enter the battlefield is tear-breaking.
Men like Desmond Doss are why the world can work and move on. His bravery. His determination. His forgiveness. His way of not judging others. Desmond Doss is who we should all aspire to be like. The man saved more lives then most anyone else and didn't shoot a single round or kill a single person.
That's some of the best acting I've ever seen. What's crazier is that this happened. The rope burn is enough to deter a lot of people. Heroes are real, and they're everywhere.
Yea, Objectors usually got shit on because they people (usually young 18-20 somethings) saw them as being scared of war and not wanting to fight. In doss's case, he couldn't because of his religion, but his platoon thought that was an excuse. They change their minds when he still went into the thick of battle, saving everyone anyway.
The acting at 5:15 was so amazing. The looks on all the other soldiers faces after witnessing what he had done, and Mel left out a lot, just makes my eyes tear up.
It's literally perfect. I don't know how the Sky didn't win like a bunch of Oscars for this and why's not more movies, but literally for one? He was still in combat mode when he was looking up at the rocks and he didn't react on the other 2 or help him because he could see him, but once so untouched him. He made a panic because he's in survival mode. But then once he finally realizes his friends and he starts walking towards them. His body starts to shut down. Because he's been up there for so long. You can only go so long without sleep. Adrenaline, like someone says one hell of a drug. His body must have been like 99. Percent of it at the time. You can only do this for like a certain amount of time before risking a bunch of health problems. If you're on a journal and so long but then when he started to settle down, his body just gave up. And that's why you collapsed kind of because his legs were giving out because he's so tired and then 1000 yd there, when they're asking, if he's wounded, it's because he's almost crying. Because it's all a s***** scene because it's all hitting him at once.When you're in survival mode and full of adrenaline you don't care about almost shit but once you're done you start thinking over like what you did and what you've done amazing acting
This is such a powerful scene. Doss’s former bullies who once ridiculed, and physically harassed him now look at him as a hero and give him ultimate respect for what he just showed he is capable of

He actually saved 70 soldiers in the battle portrayed in the film, having already received two silver stars and Purple Hearts for his acts of valour in the Philippines. He already had all the respect imaginable from his fellow soldiers. Reality is often more incredible than novels. This man was a different breed.

Desmond Doss was actually 5'5 and was very thin due to not being able to eat the rations as they conflicted with his vegetarianism. The fact he did all that while struggling past the point of exhaustion is nothing short of incredible.

The brilliance of his acting here is watching the adrenaline that was keeping him going wear off. He's still in survival mode when he first starts walking through the soldiers and then realizes he's safe and his body immediately shuts down and you see in his eyes the weight of what he just witnessed. Excellent observation. If a person has never had so adrenaline in them that they are shaking from it, they might not know the kind of effects it has on the body and mind. The actor here begins that shaking as he is received into the arms of his comrades. It is as you say...the "shut down'/withdrawal, is evident even in his eyes - excellent acting.

What’s crazy is this is a movie that’s based on a true story where they actually had to tone it back some and leave certain aspects out because the real story is actually too unbelievable. Mel Gibson thought the movie would be too unrealistic if he included some of the actual events like Doss having 17 pieces of shrapnel in his leg, rolling off the stretcher to patch up another wounded while being carried away, giving the stretcher to him, waiting 5 hours for them to get back to him during which he took a snipers round to his left arm, shattering it, to which he then made a splint for his arm with a broken rifle buttstock, and crawled 300 yards to a safety aid station. The movie also leaves out that he was actually under gunfire and mortar rounds the entire time. Doss saved 75 men in 12 hours, averaging 1 man down the cliff every 10 minutes.

When your strength has left you, and death is near, a man and his faith held true the words of his lord. He kept that truth held deeply, and for the many he gave a second life, those he saved, he was righteously saved himself by his belief.

A Virginia man, who did all he thought was right to do, without taking up arms because of his beliefs. I may not agree with those beliefs, but I can't help but respect and admire him.
What I find incredibly admirable is the fact that he didn’t care what side an injured soldier was on, he would try to save them as best as he could in those conditions. He also was reported to have dragged up to 75 of his injured comrades to safety whilst he himself had a broken limb, most likely his leg. Pure determination and passion for one’s fellow man when combined is a powerful mix, there’s no denying that, especially when hearing about what Doss did during his time in WW2
When he says “Let’s get this soldier to a hospital tent” it’s one of the most moving parts of the movie. It’s the first recognition that he is a part of the division and he is accepted by the group; albeit he had to go far past above and beyond to do so

The scene where he is walking down that trail with all those soldiers looking at him with such respect and concern, after he rescued so many dying soldiers really gets to my heart. After all the mocking he went through, the soldiers all finally realized Doss' worth and bravery as a medic soldier and showed respect to him.

I met Desmond doss at his home in Piedmont al. in1988. He was a very humble man living in a small mobile home. I spent around three hours talking to him and his wife.he invited me back but he passed before I was able to visit. I would venture to guess it’s a reference to our Faith; salvation comes from the Blood shed by Jesus Christ for the remission of our sins, and once saved we are instructed to be baptized in water, which is symbolic of the old man being laid to rest, and the new man being born in the spirit. To be accurate, baptism is only symbolic, it is not salvation, that happens when we accept Christ as our savior and are born again by the spirit. The death, burial and resurrection are the reasons we can be saved, and it all comes because of Jesus Christ. But I think the filmmakers wanted to invoke that idea, hence the blood and water, which John also writes in his Gospel at the crucifixion that when the Roman used the spear to pierce our Lord’s side out came blood and water.

I love the way Desmond leans into his captain’s open hand at 6:01. Such a small gesture but it’s basically the defining moment of the whole movie: this small, isolated kid who was outcast by all of his fellow soldiers has finally proven himself at great cost. His leader stretches out his hand to comfort him and Desmond embraces it, allowing himself to feel a moment of peace and acceptance. It’s such a poignant little moment

The whole interaction I thought was very reminiscent of a person trying to get a scared dog to come around that he won’t hurt him and the trust finally appears through the desperation. Just saying. But even without that comparison, which came to me the third time I watched this film, I noticed that gesture of reaching out & acceptance.. and Doss leaning into it like he was finally allowed to rest and come to terms with everything he was put through. Made me cry from the sheer emotional wall I felt had finally broken down both in the movie and in myself since I hadn’t been nearly as emotional the entire movie until I reached that scene. This movie speaks to the underdogs in ways we don’t even realise or comprehend was even there until moments like this happen. Forever one of my favourite movies, and the real Desmond Doss is an example of how Not All Heroes Wear Capes Or Shoot Guns & Even In Times Of War There Is No Rule Saying You Must Give Up Your Faith To Serve Your People.

Weirdest thing is the closest gameplay I've seen to that is in a Funhaus video with James and Adam playing the WW1 Battlefield game. I think it was Adam that played full combat medic, only reviving downed soldiers without shooting anybody, and took their team to victory. James played full combat mechanic, but didn't do so well with that.

Minimum!! 75 soldiers. They weren't exactly keeping a close count when the wounded kept coming in. Some others say it was over 100. 75 were verified.
And then there were reports from a Japanese sniper who claimed his rifle kept jamming each time he pulled the trigger while aiming at an American medic (believed to be Doss)

One thing they got wrong here was that Doss was severely wounded. He took a grenade to the leg and a compound fracture to his arm. He used a rifle stock as a splint for his arm, tended his own wounds, and then crawled 300 yards to safety.
That’s later in the movie when they go back up for the last time so in the movie he kicked it away from of his guys instead what really happened was he was taking cover with another individual and and grenade was near them and he used his foot/leg to cover it and it was already the end of the movie and didn’t have a lot of time left so they didn’t show how he got shot in the arm on the stretcher and then had them leave him to take someone else in a more critical position who needed it more and had treated his own wounds and then have them come back for him he crawled 300 yards to and then was retrieved to be brought the rest of the way but yea all that stuff got cut out of the movie because it was suppose to be at the end of the movie and it would’ve been a second climax in the movie the way they went had a smooth decrescendo for the film but it missed some pretty amazing details about Desmond during the final battle in the process
That was after he goes back up the next day on his Sabbath. Which was a day he requested never to work, but after saving those 75 men, his own battalion refused to go back up on the ridge without him. He went with them anyways. That's when he took a grenade to the leg.

the director cut it because he thought that the viewers would find it unrealistic or unbelievable BUT personally i wish they still included it. But as someone above said, it couldve been another climax while the movie is alr coming to end

Grubbitoes he didn’t really carry many people, he mainly dragged them. Which is considerably harder due to friction. But if he stood and ran with the wounded he would likely be shot

Stuff would start leaking out and you'd beat the shit out of the wounded area causing them to flip all over the place like a fish out of water with pain.

I love the repeated “you’re making a bowline not building a bra boy” back to the sgt, instantly just conveys to him that yes he was listening, yes he did learn, and that’s all it takes for the sgt to instantly give his trust over to him entirely.
There are some wonderful, heroic and beyond human things that Desmond done that many, if not most of us, wouldn’t have the strength to accomplish, and we should be grateful to live in a time where we aren’t called upon like him. But I think we can learn some simple things from him, listening, learning, are two of the most simple things you can do for those around you.
Getting someone the most perfect gift because of a comment they made ages ago but you remembered, or simply, nodding in agreement and saying you remember, when they tell you an upsetting story you’ve heard before. Not to get them to be quiet, but to let them know you are listening.

5:16 from this part. This is the part that deserves all the Oscars. This shows the actual emotional state of war shock. Perfectly performed! These are the initial mental disturbances that later result in what most PTSD-suffering soldiers do after demobilization.

I think, also how this movie showed, some of his PTSD wasn't just from enemy soldiers. He got bullied and attacked because of his beliefs. He might have had those fight or flight instincts no matter friend or foe.

He did however, win the Golden Globes award which is the people's vote. The Oscar is the academy vote. Since Mel Gibson is poison in Hollyweird, I'm not surprised he and Garfield didn't win an Oscar. Oscars are so politically driven that the best don't usually win. Everyone knows that Hollyweird has their own agenda and they often award a film/actor/etc to support their agenda. ie. We can all make educated guesses as to why he only has one for Schindler's List. The let’s get this soldier to a hospital tent was an incredibly moving line. He didn’t carry a weapon so he wasn’t a conventional soldier but he was accepted as one of the team after his heroism. Desmond Doss 1000% earned his Medal of Honor

Andrew did a great job, his performance was amazing but what dragged the whole movie down (at least for me) was the fact that they tried to make it look realistic with all the "based on real events" talks but the realism was thrown out of window for stuff that might look cool but from realistic point of view it was complete nonesense - a soldier holding BAR with one hand, with other holding a torso as shield and runing and shooting (very accurately I might add) at the enemy...BARs were heavy as hell and had hell of a recoil, hitting a target with it at 20 meters while holding it with both hands and standing still was quite hard (it was most accurate when shooting from prone position with a bipod), shooting it with one hand (IF you somehow managed to shoot it that way) would most likely hurt your arm...dislocate something or break some bone. A sniper that lurks at field and he does not shoot at Doss the first time he walks by, the second time he hits him into helmet while Doss is moving, then the sniper hits a thrown helmet in mid-air (showing exceptional skill) and then missing two shots in a row at way bigger target (a person)? Well...weird but possible. Japanese soldiers with bolt-action rifles are not smart enough to make a short stop to shoot, they shoot while running, missing every shot while a wounded soldier with an SMG shooting in long bursts without any proper aiming while being dragged, hits (almost) every shot...no need for reloading or anything. Soldiers taking no cover, runing only with their rifles in hand being unable to catch up a soldier who drags another soldier? Bitch-slapping a live grenade away while kicking another one away, this one explodes like 2 meters away from Doss's face and all that happens to him is some light leg wound.
The movie would have been great even without these unrealistic moments. When I saw these scenes the first time, I was actually laughing instead of being amazed (or whatever emotion it was intended to bring to the viewer) and that ruined the experience for me. One would say that after Fury got critized for this exact reasons, directors would try to avoid it in other war movies that try to look realistic.
Garfield took a very atypical individual and portrayed him with depth, courage and sincerity. Its a very strong performance, and the nomination was deserved, but in my opinion all of 2016's best actor nominees were great in their own way. Having seen the five nominees I may have cast my vote for Viggo, but the truth is anyone of them could have won and I'd be happy.

My son served in Afghanistan. Two tours of duty. He made it home once, for Christmas, and then about a year later he full filled his contract.
He was a medic with Airborne out of Fort Benning, Georgia.
He received 3, actually 4 Purple Hearts before they decided he was a liability
Now, he goes to school. They're footing the bil.
He has a full pension, insurance and got a good deal on a home loan. I don't think it was worth it.
He still walks with a limp and a cane sometimes. Still suffering from PTSD and is a different man than the boy we sent over there.

5:16 gives me goosebumps everytime. he’s so traumatized by what he’s been through in such a short amount of time, adrenaline running through his veins, completely numb to tiredness. even when he’s safe with his fellow soldiers his mind is still wired to the war.
Not only that, but his adrenalyne starts to cooldown, thats why he nearly falls; and presses his head to the commanders hand, feeling of comfort and security knowing a higher rank is looking at him and knowing what he did.
Don't forget they also beat him up
He was going on sheer faith, adrenalin and was on autopilot
And that crash is HARD when coming down from it
He must have struggled with PTSD the rest of his life
I cried like a baby watching this movie. Andrew was incredible. And the fact it's based on a true story makes it even more emotional.

I might not be religious, but this scene showed me exactly how good religion can be for people. There's so much shit about religion in the media nowadays, but this man, Desmond Doss is a real and beautiful example of how we as people can utilize religion to be something beautiful. He sincerely believes(d) God was there helping him help others, and that's incredibly beautiful to me.
Also, can we just talk about Andrew Garfield's performance in this? I was blown away when those end credits started rolling. Absolutely beautiful acting, wow.

He refused on religious grounds to carry any weapon. He was truly one of the bravest men in the war He literally earned the Medal of Honor for his duty to his fellow soldiers in combat.
The scene that gets me is when he reaches safety and everyones looking at him like they should have been the whole time.
That moment if them looking at him and accepting him not only as a soldier but as a hero or a guardian angel. It gets me every time

What was even more amazing was that there was a confirmed story of a Japanese soldier who had him dead to rights when he was getting the wounded down the cliff, and the soldier's gun jammed when he tried to take the shot.

Yea, Objectors usually got shit on because they people (usually young 18-20 somethings) saw them as being scared of war and not wanting to fight. In doss's case, he couldn't because of his religion, but his platoon thought that was an excuse.
They change their minds when he still went into the thick of battle, saving everyone anyway.

I'm not a religious man, but I can imagine how they'd feel when someone touched by God passed among them.
It's literally perfect. I don't know how the Sky didn't win like a bunch of Oscars for this and why's not more movies, but literally for one? He was still in combat mode when he was looking up at the rocks and he didn't react on the other 2 or help him because he could see him, but once so untouched him. He made a panic because he's in survival mode. But then once he finally realizes his friends and he starts walking towards them. His body starts to shut down. Because he's been up there for so long. You can only go so long without sleep. Adrenaline, like someone says one hell of a drug. His body must have been like 99. Percent of it at the time. You can only do this for like a certain amount of time before risking a bunch of health problems. If you're on a journal and so long but then when he started to settle down, his body just gave up. And that's why you collapsed kind of because his legs were giving out because he's so tired and then 1000 yd there, when they're asking, if he's wounded, it's because he's almost crying. Because it's all a s***** scene because it's all hitting him at once.When you're in survival mode and full of adrenaline you don't care about almost shit but once you're done you start thinking over like what you did and what you've done amazing acting

He actually saved 70 soldiers in the battle portrayed in the film, having already received two silver stars and Purple Hearts for his acts of valour in the Philippines. He already had all the respect imaginable from his fellow soldiers. Reality is often more incredible than novels. This man was a different breed.
