It was actually a very great part in the movie when Halifax said this because even he, though scared of the loss of life to Germany, knew the only way to beat Hitler was sacrifice, and to fight, no matter the cost. He knew in that moment that Winston Churchill was the only one for this job for Great Britain.
And Mr. Zielinski remembered and echoed those words when he spoke to Parliament this week... I'm surprised they didn't declare war on Putin then and there.

As a child of the 1950s, I remember hearing radio recordings of this speech. It stirred my blood when I was a child. And now as an old man, it still stirs my blood. We need world leaders of this caliber again. Not, what's in it for me leaders.

My family lived in The Hague, occupied Holland during the war. When he was on the radio to give a speech the streets in our country were empty. To the fury of the Nazi's, almost everybody was listening and took heart for it.
Such a momentous speech. It basically signalled to the world that while Germany was a massive, seemingly unstoppably military force, and that most of Europe had fallen either by conquest or alliance with the Nazis, Britain and by extension her empire were not backing down. It told those subjugated states like Holland that the war was not over, that the fight was only just beginning. It told the likes of the United States that Britain would fight on, no matter what policy the US chose, and it also guaranteed that the British would not bow to the Japanese in the pacific, which ensured that the war would reach around the globe. This in turn made the US involvement a matter of time, rather than if they would join at all.

It's not pathetic at all. Churchill never had hatred of Germany. He had great respect for the German people. He was saddened by what happened to them under Hitler. But - like Zelensky now - he managed to touch a nerve and make a universal moral case - one that transcended national boundaries. It's rare, but when it happens it's like capturing lighting in a bottle. This speech happened a few days after Dunkirk. Using civilian boats to rescue an army on the run wasn't just a tactical maneuver. It was a political one. He know the imagery of British citizens pulling together to save an army in the field, risking death at the hands of planes and mines, would create a gigantic contrast between Nazi Germany and Democratic Britain. He won hearts and minds by piecing through the noise, fear and confusion of that time with absolute moral clarity - he put it on display, and he trusted people around the world to understand what it meant. The Nazi's lost when someone finally decided to answer them with defiance. The US ( I'm American ) was entirely disinterested in the War until Dunkirk. But the imagery of Dunkirk, the fierceness of Churchill, the valiant defense of the homeland inspired us in ways we didn't think was possible. And while the Japanese attacking us is what brought us into the war ultimately - we were ready to commit by then. And now 500 million people across Europe have peace, prosperity and liberty - including Germany. Props to the Germans now btw. You guys built 6 LNG Terminals in a year. People didn't even think this was possible. Now American and Norwegian Gas flows to all of Europe. German Tanks are some of the best in the world, and now Ukraine has them. Sanctions, economic support, all of it. You guys paid alot for Russia's rancid barbarism. But you proved to me at least that you learned the right lesson from history.

My parents instilled in me a deep respect for Winston Churchill. In January 1965 I was 13 and as the state funeral was broadcast, that Saturday morning I took over the television, to the annoyance of my younger siblings, and I watched all of the television cover of the event. Years later I asked if I might have their copy of Churchill's history of the Second World War, and my mother gave me one of her strongest rebukes -- she heard those speeches, via the CBC, in Saskatoon, during the War, and Churchill's magnificent words, and Britain's resolve, kept us free. In the supreme test, WSC and the Brits saved freedom. Today, decades later we must be sure to not fritter all away the treasures and duties and care for others that liberty requires.
In my opinion, the Canadian contribution deserves more discussion. I've read a few books on them and they seem to have produced some of the finest soldiers, especially snipers and special forces types. I assume it's their experience of wild terrain and rural life? A Rifleman Went To War is the one that sticks out in my mind - a fine book.

Great words but 4 weeks later he murdered 1300 French men and made sure Vichy France became a complete Nazi puppet. That fleet was their way to retain some influence and independence. Politicians, especially wartime politicians, can be an incredibly ruthless bunch but from the perspective of the British at the time, they were a small island nation off the coast of a Europe mastered by Nazis. The French were refusing to move their ships out of the reach of Germany and they took the action they thought they needed to. Even FDR said he would have done the same in their position. It was a horrific thing to do, a horrific loss of life, but the entire world was going through similar tragedy and people do the best they can with the information they have at the time. It's important to make plain the mistakes of leaders like Churchill, but at least put them in the proper context.

I am French, and I consider him to be one of the greatest men of our time. I have read his memoirs, and I find myself moved to tears when I watch his speeches. With all humility, I salute the British for having had, just as we had De Gaulle, such a great figure as Winston Churchill.
Im British and 'ive just spent two months in the south of France with work. My first real visit to France. The country and the people were spectacular. I cannot put into words how much I enjoyed this visit. The British and French are natural allies in this ever increasingly dangerous world. We should build the bridge even stronger.
You should salute the British people who prosecuted the war while Churchill spent every day in an alcohol haze. My dad grew up without his father who was buried in Libya where he fell fighting European fascism so that Britain and France would be free. You should salute the men who froze to death in the Arctic Ocean after u-boat attacks or those who burned to death in their aircraft 5000m over Hamburg. A simplistic reading of history does no-one any favours and dishonours many.

Two very different men, who did not always get along together, but both great in their own ways. Maybe hard for two Alpha males to get along. My favorite Churchill / De Gaulle story is when De Gaulle was to bestow the Medal of Liberation to Churchill. Churchill was expected Dr Gaulle to just pin the medal on him but no more, due to their conflicts. But De Gaulle, appreciating how important Churchill was to France and the world, bent over and kissed him on both cheeks, in the French manner to show respect to a real hero. It brought tears to Churchill's eyes. I can never think ill of De Gaulle because of this gesture.
You owe your freedom (in large part) to millions of Russians for whom both Stalin and Churchill had scarcely more respect than Hitler. The Russians did most of the killing and more than their share of the dying.

Craziest thing is, the Brits and the Germans had so much in common. In the lead up, almost no Brits wanted another war, and a fair few respected Hitler and his views. But we were ahead of our time in racism, anti semifinal and jingoism.

Just a pity that the wait was such a long one. During the long wait for Hitler to declare war on the USA, we gained a war winning ally with the Soviets after a year. In the meantime all that food and material purchased from the US resulted in a massive financial debt, not full paid until 31st December 2006. For the British people that date marked the end of the war.
Winston knew the Americans would eventually enter the war, he was counting on it. "you may very well expect the United States to do the right thing, once all other avenues have been exhausted" I might have paraphrased that quote but he indeed said it. he also, according to his own account, slept "the sleep of the saved" the night of the attack on pearl harbor, knowing his united Kingdom was no longer alone. not to mention he had plenty of intelligence from his militaries spy network keeping him informed about the situation in the far east. I've seen some articles even suggesting British intelligence knew Japan was targeting Hawaii... tho I haven't read anything concrete on that. the point is, Churchill knew the Americans would be pulled into the war eventually, it was a matter of holding out until the axis slipped up and dragged them in

Fantastic piece of history retold. A key detail in the parliament scene that those unfamiliar with the Westminster system may have missed is to do the sides of the house cheering. You'd reasonably expect that Winston Churchill's own government (the Conservative, Liberal and National Labour coalition) sitting behind him would be the ones cheering, while those opposite (Clement Atlee's Labour party) are the ones cheering Churchill throughout his speech. This is because, strangely enough, Churchill's own party (or at least core members of it) favoured a peace settlement with the Germans, mediated via the Italians. Despite Churchill's successor (Chamberlain) being removed from power because he wasn't seen as a strong enough leader to counter the threat of Hitler (and now Churchill who was that stronger leader in favour of defeating Hitler), his coalition had seen the massive losses in Europe and defeats suffered by "many old and famous states" at the hands of the Nazi's, and were basically ready to bend the knee. Attlee's Opposition Government (the Labour Party) had itself actually opposed rearmament in the 1920s and 1930s, preferring internationalism under the League of Nations instead of national security based policy. It was actually Attlee who stood against this, saying in 1934 "We have absolutely abandoned any idea of nationalist loyalty. We are deliberately putting a world order before our loyalty to our own country. We say we want to see put on the statute book something which will make our people citizens of the world before they are citizens of this country?" In fact Attlee's opposition to Chamberlain's increase to the defence budget in 1936, two years before war broke out, was chiefly because he felt it was too late and that this final throw of the dice would basically erase the progress of Social Legislation that he and the Labour party were proponents of - he wasn't opposed to the concept that Britain should be spending money on its defence, he was opposed to the idea that Britain should have sat idle for as long as it did and was now faced with putting every available penny into "armaments of war", instead of into the wellbeing of its people. By 1937 Labour who had dumped the idea of pacifism as a party policy and were against the conservative Chamberlain's policy of appeasement. This is what leads to the famous scene in this video, where Attlee's Labour Part in Opposition is loudly cheering on Churchill, a Conservative, while paradoxically Churchill's own Conservative Government sits quietly behind him with barely a whisper of support until the end, where it is Chamberlain himself who dabs his forehead with his handkerchief, signalling to the Govermment MPs that they are also going to dump appeasement and the peace deals with Italy, and support Churchill into the war.

In essence, when Chamberlain was forced from office as PM, he remained an MP and a member of the conservatives. When Churchill came to power as the PM, he knew he would need to get the support of the likes of Chamberlain so that the conservative appeasement faction (still present even with the departure of Chamberlain as PM) would then back him. Otherwise the coalition government that Churchill was leading would fall apart. One of the most fervent proponents of appeasement (alongside Chamberlain at one time) was Lord Halifax, a peer in the upper chambers. He is the man you see the camera look to up in the gallery above the parliament. It is also to Halifax that Chamberlain signals (as well as other conservatives) that the appeasement cause is lost and war is the only option. Chamberlain sits in the parliament, listens to Churchill's speech and gauges the reaction of the rest of the parliament. When Chamberlain sees the overwhelming support from Labour (the Opposition party, of all people!), he realises that war is what must be done. He takes out his handkerchief, touches it to his brown and this signals the rest of the conservatives and the leading political players backing appeasement (like Lord Halifax) that he (Chamberlain) is backing Churchill, he is backing the war and that he will no longer support appeasement. That speech was so important for Churchill, not because he had to finish convincing the nation to fight, but because he had to convince large parts of his own party to ditch appeasement and, essentially, do a complete 180 on their views about a war with Germany.

While Germany was dropping leaflets of AH's plea for reasoning and peace all over UK cities such as London, the British were bombing German cities at night killing thousands of civilians. AH refused to retaliate in kind to the bombings for three and a half months, hoping Churchill and other statesmen would see reason and end the senseless blood-shed. You talk about the British and the Allied powers as a whole being the ones who brought freedom but they were oppressing and stripping away the rights of the Arabs in Palestine on behalf of foreign interlopers who had no rights to claim the land as their own and threatened any country that wanted to seek peace with Germany by threatening them with harsh consequences for daring to practice their right to self-determination. What makes this worse, they invoke God's name and declare they are fighting for freedom and religion but their actions prove otherwise. When Churchill and FDR stood up before the world and declared they want to one day build a new social order, that is about the same as a bald-headed barber recommending a tonic guaranteed to make hair grow. Their actions spoke much louder than their pretty words and their actions contradicted what they piously claimed as they commit blasphemy against God. How noble might this new British crusade look, had it been preceded by the granting of liberty to 350 million Indians. Or, a proclamation of independence and the right of self-determination for the remaining British colonies. Instead, we saw England oppressing these millions, just as it stood by and watched the oppression of several million Germans as a result of Versailles.
Gary Oldman should have won, not just nominated every best actor award for this film, on this scene alone. I live in a small West Texas town. I saw this at the Theater. At the conclusion of this everyone was on their feet cheering just like they were in this final scene. Remarkable film. My mother remembers well hearing this on the radio growing up.

I am a 50ish older guy,with not the best education in the world, who has just watched this speech performed by a great man 82 years ago and it brought tears to my eyes. Winston DID weaponize the English language when he spoke these words.....
The way they were able to embody the true power of that speech in this film is a testament to history itself. That speech may very well have saved the free world. Had the British thrown in the towel things would have likely gone in a very different and negative direction. Churchill was without a doubt one of the greatest figures the English world has ever produced, this film did a fine job of showing that imo.
This speech really brings home how alone Britain was at that moment and how perilously close they came to losing. And the call, as in so many of Churchill's speeches, to the United States to come to their aid is heard again. But that wouldn't happen for another year or more. The Battle of Britain that started a month after this speech was in fact a battle for survival and the Brits fought like wolverines.
The fact that Britain acknowledged the young power in the world and asked for help; gives me chills. I'm proud that we eventually got over to help fight the German forces. We may have had our struggle to gain our independence, but we are brothers until the end. We were able to achieve greatness because we were primed for greatness because of our history. @@chazmccrea8451 The war in Europe would have been difficult, if not impossible, to win without firstly the aid provided by, and then the direct involvement of, the USA. One can't help but wonder, if the Japanese had not attacked Pearl Harbour, would the Americans ever have actually fought to free a Nazi dominated Europe. If not and, as they inevitably did, things went bad in Russia, we might have seen the Red Army sweep across the breadth of German held Europe until we ended up with the Soviets staring across the English Channel and planning an invasion...
@@chriscarter5720 initially the Russians only survived because of the aid flowing in via Britain (the perilous Russian convoys). If we had not won the Battle Of Britain, clearing the way for an invasion, there would have been no convoys and Russia would have fallen. Hitler would also have triumphed in North Africa, giving him access to an unlimited supply of oil. By the time America woke up they would have been facing the combined forces of Germany, Italy and Japan, on their own.

And that only in hope that the US would maybe step up. Without Pearl Harbor, i doubt it very much. There isn't a single person in parliament right now who loves and believes in Britain enough to deliver a speech like that. At Chartwell one evening when Britain stood alone, standing with his beloved Clemmie and looking out over the countryside, he calmly said to her "They shall never have it, you know." Such was his unshakable belief in the British people.

Churchill was a blatant racist. I once met Earl Mountbatten of Burma (my father had spent some time on Mountbatten's staff during WWII) who was the final Viceroy of India and who oversaw the partition of British India into the states of India and Pakistan. I asked him why he was in such a tearing hurry to get partition done. He told me that since the British economy was in such a parlous state after the war that he feared that the Labour Prime Minister, Clement Attlee, might lose a vote of no confidence and possibly Churchill would return as PM. If that happened, Churchill would have brought Indian independence to a screeching halt if he could. Mountbatten felt that he might only have a limited time to achieve Indian independence. Also, although he didn't know it at the time, the Muslim leader, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, was dying of cancer and was really pushing to see an independent Pakistan before his death.
There are two speeches I feel will reverberate through history Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and Churchills "We shall fight them on the beaches" speech, both were given in what looked like darkest days for their people, both caused their people to rise to great heights.
Abraham Lincolns speech only has value for the United States. I dont want to diminish local history, but when you talk about speeches that reverberate through history, than i think Roosvelt Speech after Pearl Harbor was much more important. Or the Speech Kennedy gave in Berlin.

This speech stirs our spirits because we know this truth in our hearts, and standing tall against aggression is our collective responsibility as human beings. Churchill had already lived such a life by this point. Briefly he was taken prisoner during the Boer War - and escaped. Went into politics afterwards including holding important offices. In the First World War he failed in the Dardanelles as First Lord of the Admiralty in trying to end the war sooner so went back to the trenches to fight with his unit which included several close shaves with death in Ypres. Then started the "Landship Committee" which built the first tanks and did hasten the end of the First World War. He spent much of the inter-war years as a political outcast in reality but was one of the few to see the coming war with Hitler as inevitable which is where this film picks up. After the war he was also one of the first to talk about an Iron Curtain descending across Europe as well as other notable accomplishments like his Nobel art prize and many paintings. It's poignant that, as a military man, used phrases like "Whatever the cost may be..." having been in the trenches of the First World War to see the horrors firsthand. The way I would often describe him was as a gambler, but he was able to brush off failure and keep going. He admitted this himself when he talked about "Success is not final, defeat not fatal but it is the courage to go on that counts." 🙂
Whenever I see any cocky American claim they "saved Britain" from Nazi Germany - they don't know what they're talking about. Britain had already saved herself, long before the Americans joined the war. No surrender!!

The war had effectively come to a stalemate when the Americans joined, neither Britain nor Germany having the upper hand in Europe. Britain would likely have lost in North Africa of course without the additional resources.
Churchill would have approved greatly of Zelensky's spirit. The same enemy then as now has challenged us - the forces of tyranny and oppression once more throw down a challenge to freedom and democracy. There is nothing else except victory! Churchill and my grandfather died the same day and were buried on the same date. I went with my friends to view the catafalque and wept for both of them. A few weeks later I went to Chartwell. I will never forget how privileged I was to live through those times.

I memorized it and have used it in seminars and on stage. Remarkably, when I asked the audience who wrote this, someone always would say the right answer. That is how important this speech was.
Incredible speech! One thing that must not be forgotten: George VI stayed in London with his family during the Battle of Britian. He didn't flee to Canada like many wanted him too. He stayed with his people.

Because of this, I had to come back and rewatch this speech and follow along in the book as it was being read by Gary Oldman. Such a great book and fantastic movie! Winston Churchill was one of the finest men ever to grace this planet.
Many people doubted him because of the disaster at Gallipoli during WW1. Though, using his words alone, he managed to inspire the confidence of others in him, to help him lead Britain to a winning battle.

It was actually a very great part in the movie when Halifax said this because even he, though scared of the loss of life to Germany, knew the only way to beat Hitler was sacrifice, and to fight, no matter the cost. He knew in that moment that Winston Churchill was the only one for this job for Great Britain.
And Mr. Zielinski remembered and echoed those words when he spoke to Parliament this week... I'm surprised they didn't declare war on Putin then and there.

As a child of the 1950s, I remember hearing radio recordings of this speech. It stirred my blood when I was a child. And now as an old man, it still stirs my blood. We need world leaders of this caliber again. Not, what's in it for me leaders.

My family lived in The Hague, occupied Holland during the war. When he was on the radio to give a speech the streets in our country were empty. To the fury of the Nazi's, almost everybody was listening and took heart for it.
Such a momentous speech. It basically signalled to the world that while Germany was a massive, seemingly unstoppably military force, and that most of Europe had fallen either by conquest or alliance with the Nazis, Britain and by extension her empire were not backing down.
It told those subjugated states like Holland that the war was not over, that the fight was only just beginning. It told the likes of the United States that Britain would fight on, no matter what policy the US chose, and it also guaranteed that the British would not bow to the Japanese in the pacific, which ensured that the war would reach around the globe. This in turn made the US involvement a matter of time, rather than if they would join at all.

It's not pathetic at all. Churchill never had hatred of Germany. He had great respect for the German people. He was saddened by what happened to them under Hitler.
But - like Zelensky now - he managed to touch a nerve and make a universal moral case - one that transcended national boundaries. It's rare, but when it happens it's like capturing lighting in a bottle.
This speech happened a few days after Dunkirk. Using civilian boats to rescue an army on the run wasn't just a tactical maneuver. It was a political one. He know the imagery of British citizens pulling together to save an army in the field, risking death at the hands of planes and mines, would create a gigantic contrast between Nazi Germany and Democratic Britain. He won hearts and minds by piecing through the noise, fear and confusion of that time with absolute moral clarity - he put it on display, and he trusted people around the world to understand what it meant. The Nazi's lost when someone finally decided to answer them with defiance.
The US ( I'm American ) was entirely disinterested in the War until Dunkirk. But the imagery of Dunkirk, the fierceness of Churchill, the valiant defense of the homeland inspired us in ways we didn't think was possible. And while the Japanese attacking us is what brought us into the war ultimately - we were ready to commit by then.
And now 500 million people across Europe have peace, prosperity and liberty - including Germany.
Props to the Germans now btw. You guys built 6 LNG Terminals in a year. People didn't even think this was possible. Now American and Norwegian Gas flows to all of Europe. German Tanks are some of the best in the world, and now Ukraine has them. Sanctions, economic support, all of it. You guys paid alot for Russia's rancid barbarism. My parents instilled in me a deep respect for Winston Churchill. In January 1965 I was 13 and as the state funeral was broadcast, that Saturday morning I took over the television, to the annoyance of my younger siblings, and I watched all of the television cover of the event. Years later I asked if I might have their copy of Churchill's history of the Second World War, and my mother gave me one of her strongest rebukes -- she heard those speeches, via the CBC, in Saskatoon, during the War, and Churchill's magnificent words, and Britain's resolve, kept us free. In the supreme test, WSC and the Brits saved freedom. Today, decades later we must be sure to not fritter all away the treasures and duties and care for others that liberty requires.

In my opinion, the Canadian contribution deserves more discussion. I've read a few books on them and they seem to have produced some of the finest soldiers, especially snipers and special forces types. I assume it's their experience of wild terrain and rural life? Politicians, especially wartime politicians, can be an incredibly ruthless bunch but from the perspective of the British at the time, they were a small island nation off the coast of a Europe mastered by Nazis. The French were refusing to move their ships out of the reach of Germany and they took the action they thought they needed to. Even FDR said he would have done the same in their position.
It was a horrific thing to do, a horrific loss of life, but the entire world was going through similar tragedy and people do the best they can with the information they have at the time. It's important to make plain the mistakes of leaders like Churchill, but at least put them in the proper context.

I am French, and I consider him to be one of the greatest men of our time. I have read his memoirs, and I find myself moved to tears when I watch his speeches. With all humility, I salute the British for having had, just as we had De Gaulle, such a great figure as Winston Churchill.

The country and the people were spectacular. I cannot put into words how much I enjoyed this visit.
The British and French are natural allies in this ever increasingly dangerous world. We should build the bridge even stronger.
You should salute the British people who prosecuted the war while Churchill spent every day in an alcohol haze. My dad grew up without his father who was buried in Libya where he fell fighting European fascism so that Britain and France would be free. You should salute the men who froze to death in the Arctic Ocean after u-boat attacks or those who burned to death in their aircraft 5000m over Hamburg. A simplistic reading of history does no-one any favours and dishonours many.

Two very different men, who did not always get along together, but both great in their own ways. Maybe hard for two Alpha males to get along. My favorite Churchill / De Gaulle story is when De Gaulle was to bestow the Medal of Liberation to Churchill. Churchill was expected Dr Gaulle to just pin the medal on him but no more, due to their conflicts. But De Gaulle, appreciating how important Churchill was to France and the world, bent over and kissed him on both cheeks, in the French manner to show respect to a real hero. It brought tears to Churchill's eyes. I can never think ill of De Gaulle because of this gesture.

We / they didn't have a choice. Ww2 was going to be for keeps. He was the right man in the right place at the right time. Not only did he despise Hitler, but he also didn't trust Joseph Stalin.
Craziest thing is, the Brits and the Germans had so much in common. In the lead up, almost no Brits wanted another war, and a fair few respected Hitler and his views. But we were ahead of our time in racism, anti semifinal and jingoism.

Just a pity that the wait was such a long one. During the long wait for Hitler to declare war on the USA, we gained a war winning ally with the Soviets after a year. In the meantime all that food and material purchased from the US resulted in a massive financial debt, not full paid until 31st December 2006. For the British people that date marked the end of the war.
Winston knew the Americans would eventually enter the war, he was counting on it.

Fantastic piece of history retold. A key detail in the parliament scene that those unfamiliar with the Westminster system may have missed is to do the sides of the house cheering.
You'd reasonably expect that Winston Churchill's own government (the Conservative, Liberal and National Labour coalition) sitting behind him would be the ones cheering, while those opposite (Clement Atlee's Labour party) are the ones cheering Churchill throughout his speech. This is because, strangely enough, Churchill's own party (or at least core members of it) favoured a peace settlement with the Germans, mediated via the Italians.
Despite Churchill's successor (Chamberlain) being removed from power because he wasn't seen as a strong enough leader to counter the threat of Hitler (and now Churchill who was that stronger leader in favour of defeating Hitler), his coalition had seen the massive losses in Europe and defeats suffered by "many old and famous states" at the hands of the Nazi's, and were basically ready to bend the knee.
Attlee's Opposition Government (the Labour Party) had itself actually opposed rearmament in the 1920s and 1930s, preferring internationalism under the League of Nations instead of national security based policy. It was actually Attlee who stood against this, saying in 1934 "We have absolutely abandoned any idea of nationalist loyalty. We are deliberately putting a world order before our loyalty to our own country. We say we want to see put on the statute book something which will make our people citizens of the world before they are citizens of this country?"
In fact Attlee's opposition to Chamberlain's increase to the defence budget in 1936, two years before war broke out, was chiefly because he felt it was too late and that this final throw of the dice would basically erase the progress of Social Legislation that he and the Labour party were proponents of - he wasn't opposed to the concept that Britain should be spending money on its defence, he was opposed to the idea that Britain should have sat idle for as long as it did and was now faced with putting every available penny into "armaments of war", instead of into the wellbeing of its people.
By 1937 Labour who had dumped the idea of pacifism as a party policy and were against the conservative Chamberlain's policy of appeasement. This is what leads to the famous scene in this video, where Attlee's Labour Part in Opposition is loudly cheering on Churchill, a Conservative, while paradoxically Churchill's own Conservative Government sits quietly behind him with barely a whisper of support until the end, where it is Chamberlain himself who dabs his forehead with his handkerchief, signalling to the Govermment MPs that they are also going to dump appeasement and the peace deals with Italy, and support Churchill into the war.

So whats happening with the brow-wiping scene - theres a few things to break down. In essence, when Chamberlain was forced from office as PM, he remained an MP and a member of the conservatives. When Churchill came to power as the PM, he knew he would need to get the support of the likes of Chamberlain so that the conservative appeasement faction (still present even with the departure of Chamberlain as PM) would then back him. Otherwise the coalition government that Churchill was leading would fall apart.
One of the most fervent proponents of appeasement (alongside Chamberlain at one time) was Lord Halifax, a peer in the upper chambers. He is the man you see the camera look to up in the gallery above the parliament. It is also to Halifax that Chamberlain signals (as well as other conservatives) that the appeasement cause is lost and war is the only option. Chamberlain sits in the parliament, listens to Churchill's speech and gauges the reaction of the rest of the parliament.
When Chamberlain sees the overwhelming support from Labour (the Opposition party, of all people!), he realises that war is what must be done. He takes out his handkerchief, touches it to his brown and this signals the rest of the conservatives and the leading political players backing appeasement (like Lord Halifax) that he (Chamberlain) is backing Churchill, he is backing the war and that he will no longer support appeasement.
That speech was so important for Churchill, not because he had to finish convincing the nation to fight, but because he had to convince large parts of his own party to ditch appeasement and, essentially, do a complete 180 on their views about a war with Germany.
One of the greatest moments and perhaps the greatest speech in the long history of the human race. This speech insured liberty would prevail and the evil tyranny of totalitarianism would fail.
Learn a little more. Communism is a totalitarian state. National Socialism is not.

Lol. They didn't bring freedom but they brought death and destruction to innocent people because of their greed and lust for money, fame, and glory. They allowed their love of money to bind them to their money-lenders' will. Instead of pursuing peace with Germany, as AH never wanted a war to break out, they rejected his peace offers and told their "threatened" peoples that Germany fears their impending destruction and that Germany is on its last leg. While Germany was dropping leaflets of AH's plea for reasoning and peace all over UK cities such as London, the British were bombing German cities at night killing thousands of civilians. AH refused to retaliate in kind to the bombings for three and a half months, hoping Churchill and other statesmen would see reason and end the senseless blood-shed.

How noble might this new British crusade look, had it been preceded by the granting of liberty to 350 million Indians. Or, a proclamation of independence and the right of self-determination for the remaining British colonies. Instead, we saw England oppressing these millions, just as it stood by and watched the oppression of several million Germans as a result of Versailles.
Gary Oldman should have won, not just nominated every best actor award for this film, on this scene alone. I live in a small West Texas town. I saw this at the Theater. At the conclusion of this everyone was on their feet cheering just like they were in this final scene. Remarkable film. My mother remembers well hearing this on the radio growing up.

The way they were able to embody the true power of that speech in this film is a testament to history itself. That speech may very well have saved the free world. Had the British thrown in the towel things would have likely gone in a very different and negative direction. This speech really brings home how alone Britain was at that moment and how perilously close they came to losing. And the call, as in so many of Churchill's speeches, to the United States to come to their aid is heard again. But that wouldn't happen for another year or more. The Battle of Britain that started a month after this speech was in fact a battle for survival and the Brits fought like wolverines.
The fact that Britain acknowledged the young power in the world and asked for help; gives me chills.
I'm proud that we eventually got over to help fight the German forces.
We may have had our struggle to gain our independence, but we are brothers until the end.

One can't help but wonder, if the Japanese had not attacked Pearl Harbour, would the Americans ever have actually fought to free a Nazi dominated Europe. If not and, as they inevitably did, things went bad in Russia, we might have seen the Red Army sweep across the breadth of German held Europe until we ended up with the Soviets staring across the English Channel and planning an invasion...

If we had not won the Battle Of Britain, clearing the way for an invasion, there would have been no convoys and Russia would have fallen.

By the time America woke up they would have been facing the combined forces of Germany, Italy and Japan, on their own.

Churchill was a blatant racist. I once met Earl Mountbatten of Burma (my father had spent some time on Mountbatten's staff during WWII) who was the final Viceroy of India and who oversaw the partition of British India into the states of India and Pakistan. I asked him why he was in such a tearing hurry to get partition done. He told me that since the British economy was in such a parlous state after the war that he feared that the Labour Prime Minister, Clement Attlee, might lose a vote of no confidence and possibly Churchill would return as PM. If that happened, Churchill would have brought Indian independence to a screeching halt if he could. Mountbatten felt that he might only have a limited time to achieve Indian independence.
Also, although he didn't know it at the time, the Muslim leader, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, was dying of cancer and was really pushing to see an independent Pakistan before his death.

There are two speeches I feel will reverberate through history Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and Churchills "We shall fight them on the beaches" speech, both were given in what looked like darkest days for their people, both caused their people to rise to great heights.
Abraham Lincolns speech only has value for the United States. I dont want to diminish local history, but when you talk about speeches that reverberate through history, than i think Roosvelt Speech after Pearl Harbor was much more important. Or the Speech Kennedy gave in Berlin.

Historians state that famine was inevitable during WWII and it was just a perfect storm in India. Britain was in a terrible situation and unfortunately when India was hit by famine and then plague it was on the lower end of the British governments to do list.
Conclusion: Churchills government is by no means innocent in making the famine in India worse but his government is by no means as guilty as people making it to be.

Same here. It reminds us that the struggle to defend liberty and democracy was not confined to a single war, or a single generation. There is good in this world and it's worth fighting to defend it. This speech stirs our spirits because we know this truth in our hearts, and standing tall against aggression is our collective responsibility as human beings. The storm of war is battering Eastern Europe today, and we have to stand firm against tyrants once again. Slava Ukraini!

Churchill had already lived such a life by this point. Briefly he was taken prisoner during the Boer War - and escaped. Went into politics afterwards including holding important offices. In the First World War he failed in the Dardanelles as First Lord of the Admiralty in trying to end the war sooner so went back to the trenches to fight with his unit which included several close shaves with death in Ypres. Then started the "Landship Committee" which built the first tanks and did hasten the end of the First World War. He spent much of the inter-war years as a political outcast in reality but was one of the few to see the coming war with Hitler as inevitable which is where this film picks up. After the war he was also one of the first to talk about an Iron Curtain descending across Europe as well as other notable accomplishments like his Nobel art prize and many paintings.
It's poignant that, as a military man, used phrases like "Whatever the cost may be..." having been in the trenches of the First World War to see the horrors firsthand.
The way I would often describe him was as a gambler, but he was able to brush off failure and keep going. He admitted this himself when he talked about "Success is not final, defeat not fatal but it is the courage to go on that counts." 🙂

The war had effectively come to a stalemate when the Americans joined, neither Britain nor Germany having the upper hand in Europe. Britain would likely have lost in North Africa of course without the additional resources.

@@stillnessbetween5103 IIRC Churchill's own party members could not show support until Chamberlain gave them the signal (the scene where Chamberlain wipes his head with his handkerchief.) That's when the Conservatives started cheering. The Labour opposition were of course cheering from the start.
It's quite inspiring that both Labour and Conservatives were of the same opinion, both being willing to fight Hitler and the Nazis at the height of their power, when Nazi Germany dominated all of mainland Europe.

An amazing moment for the World- to defy Hitler. Cheers to Gary Oldman for his performance. I am an Iron Maiden fan and grew up listening to this speech to the beginning of their song "Aces High". I memorized it and have used it in seminars and on stage. Remarkably, when I asked the audience who wrote this, someone always would say the right answer. That is how important this speech was.
I can listen this on a repeated loop , every word is so heavy and full pride.

Currently reading "Churchill: Walking With Destiny", and this speech came about in the book. Because of this, I had to come back and rewatch this speech and follow along in the book as it was being read by Gary Oldman. Such a great book and fantastic movie! Winston Churchill was one of the finest men ever to grace this planet.
Many people doubted him because of the disaster at Gallipoli during WW1. Though, using his words alone, he managed to inspire the confidence of others in him, to help him lead Britain to a winning battle.
