Parker Valby wins the individual NCAA Cross Country Title. Parker ran a fast and dominant race. Parker also set a new course record. The Florida Women's Cross Country team finished in the Top 5. Will and Samantha Palmer have built a good team. Way to go, Gators!

They haven't built a good team: they bought a good team. Asekol, Thorner and Mazza-Downie arrived via the transfer portal, where, to be fair, it should be pointed out, State got Tyynismaa (the self-described ' big-race, big girl') from Alabama. I have read that the transfer portal has been energized by NIL. The top athletes are now moving to teams that look to score in the nats, not that they always haven't been doing that. But, apparently now, you have a better chance of picking up somebody's low stick on an NCAA 6th or 10th squad if it makes you more likely to podium at the champs, which enhances the prospects of your pickup to get an NIL. Tuohy was the first distance champ to score an NIL deal. As Norm Ogilvie (whom I know, like me, is suffering Tuohy Withdrawal Syndrome) said, I think during the ACC 10k race, which KT won, 'Tuohy is not getting poor going to college.'

Just a couple of things. First, Parker Valby ran a terrific race and deserved to win. She jumped out in front and challenged all the other runners to come and get her. And no one could. Secondly, as most of us know, the only person who could have possibly run her down was Katelyn Tuohy. Unfortunately she was sick and couldn’t do it. Now I’ve always had a great amount of respect for her, both as a runner and as a person, but I think she deserves the utmost respect for what she did in this race. Having been a runner I know what it’s like to try to race when you’re sick. It’s horrible. I can’t imagine what she must have been thinking. After all the hype regarding this big showdown with Parker Valby and the second best runner on the team injured, she had to decide whether or not to run. Now I’ve known runners that just won’t run if they’re sick, period, which in most cases is alright. But Katelyn Tuohy doesn’t think that way. She has always been the quintessential team player, and she probably knew if she didn’t run N.C. State had no chance of winning the team title. So, she put aside how she felt, got into her running gear, and showed up at the starting line. But she didn’t just run, she ran as hard as she could. And she got 5th place. Now most runners would be thrilled to finish 5th, but I’m sure she was a little disappointed considering she was supposed to be racing for the title. But if you look at the bigger picture, that was just enough for her team to win the title, by 1 point. And to me, that’s the kind of person you want on your team. Totally unselfish. I’m sure she knew her chances of winning were slim, but she ran her heart out anyway. She passed, I think it was 5 runners, right towards the end. And if she had failed to get by just one of them, her team would have lost. So, to me, that shows more about her character than if she had won by 30 seconds. So I say congratulations for the race she ran, and I have a hunch she’ll probably get ‘em next time.

This race was a miracle for State. Piecing together the accounts of Henes, Sam Bush, Tyynismaa and other commentators, credit for the win largely goes to Katelyn, who was fading and around 11th with less than a k to go, but she understood the situation and gutted it out, moving up to fifth place, passing Thorvaldson, Ramsdan, Scrimgeour, Jepkiroui and Asekol, plus Maatoug, who was running unattached. But just as critical was the achievement of the freshman phenom Leah Stephens at 43/31 with 20.08.2, astonishingly, beating Leane Willemse and Yasna Petrova who ALSO recorded 20.08.2, in other words, edging them by just a few hundredths of a second. Leah is my candidate for low stick after Tuohy, Chmiel and Bush depart. Obviously, credit goes to the whole squad, including Tyynismaa, Sam Bush and freshman Grace Hartman, all of whom improved their positions in the closing stage of the race. The only fifth guy in faster than Grace was NAU's Aliandrea Upshaw who scored 44 to Grace's 48.
To me, the biggest surprise was the winning score, 123 to NAU's 124. At the pre-race presser the coachs predicted it would take 80 or less. Yet, there was so much talent from so many schools that even the dominating squads from State, NAU and OSU could only manage to score 123, 124 and 156. So, Parker and Katelyn were, indeed, both the winners. And, 'Maris, Sam and Grace. And don't forget NC State's sixth and seventh guys: Hanna Gapes and Gionna Quarzo who scored 55 and 76. Gionna's 76 beat all the other teams' fifth guy except for NAU and OSU. I think it's time for the Coach Henes doubters to admit that Laurie is truly one of the greats.

So terrible that Katelyn was sick for this race!

Parker will never win a team title because she’s not a team player, very self entitled!

You may be right about that. One thing is for sure, State sure showed how you win national titles, with every one of them doing their absolute best. Winning the championship without Kelsey and with a sick Tuohy is truly amazing. This has to be one of the greatest XC squads ever.

@@PhilobiblionThis guy is literally the biggest Valby hater out there. Constantly commenting on videos trying to discredit her. If you knew anything about her or her career, you’d know how stupid you sound.
Also, she already has won a NCAA team title in track. The fact that you’re not even aware of this shows your complete lack of knowledge of college running.
As far as cross country goes, 5th was literally their best finish in school history, and if Mazza-Downie didn’t DNF, they would’ve easily been on the podium. They also won their first conference championship since 2012, and Valby spent the post race interview celebrating the team title instead of her own massive win. Safe to say that Valby has had an extremely positive impact on her teammates, and she has helped them achieve great success on both the track and the grass.

Florida Gators women were 2022 outdoor track team champions. Maybe do a second or two of research before posting something so wrong and baseless.

Your comment is nuts. You don't even know her -- and exactly how does one not contribute to a team winning a title when they end up winning the race? You can't do any better. If she had come in at second place -- would Florida have been any closer to winning the team title? Of course not -- they would have been worse off. It is exactly her being at Florida and Palmer being the coach that will bring more talent to the team that may eventually lead to a national title.
