Tremendous race for Parker Valby! She leverages her strengths--anyone who beats her must earn it. Also, Doris Lemngole is a great talent. Next year could be her turn. Tough day for Tuohy, but she'll have better days, no doubt. Also, NC State does the unbelievable and wins the title without their #2 runner. Tuohy's 5th place was crucial to the team's success.
As confirmed by Coach Henes after the race (in the post-race interview on the Let's Run TH-cam channel), Katelyn Tuohy was sick. And Tuohy had to go to the medical tent right after the race. I firmly believe that if Tuohy was not sick, it would have been another very close battle for the individual title.

I feel bad for Tuohy as I think some in the media and some fans want to see someone just keep winning and put the athlete on a pedestal. Then when they fall short in some races then the criticism starts. Remember, or research Jim Ryun, a great high school runner who was on a collision course to Olympic gold but managed to get silver. He was roasted by media and fans. He did have a long list of world record runs so he did not deserve the abuse. I hope Tuohy runs to satisfy herself and not for the media or fickle fans. She must be learning from the losses as well as the wins so I suspect she will be training hard for 2024.
Sometimes you have to save yourself for something bigger... But I understand the upset, I am a Tuohy fan as well. Can win them all, maybe that wasn't really her goal this time.

I'll say, just watching all of these girls give all they can is just inspiring. You can just see how much it means to all of them (not just the leaders but even those who come in towards the back of the pack) and how much they give their all. That is why sports are so great and watching this race makes me emotional with awe and amazement!
What a race for the PACK. -Tuohy toughed it out despite being sick. -Amaris came in clutch (finally) -their 4th runner finished at the same time as two other runners and edged them out probably by hundredths. If THOSE runners edged her out, they would've lost. -Bush passed 14 runners in the last K ...a hard fought day.

Omgggg Parker Valby really won!!! Her time is insane 18:55!!! Ok, I'm a bit shocked that Tuohy's not in the top three. But I guess I'm starting to like Elise Stearns. Those two, Olemomoi and Lemngole are such a cool pair, they've managed to really run together for all their races.

I think she said in the press conference a couple days ago that she's only been running, at most, 30 miles a week. That's insanely low for a 6k race and is directly impacting her last 2k. I hope she can, otherwise she's going to need to look at moving to something like triathlon where cross training is the sport, which I wouldn't complain about, haha!

I believe she said she only runs 3 days per week to accumulate at most 30 miles. Seeing what she is capable of when healthy is impressive. It was less than a year ago that she had to miss the indoor track championships due to injury. New coach, recent NCAA titles, and support from Nike should increase her confidence and determination.

I sincerely hope that getting in the right program with the right coach will yield exponential results for her. It'll be interesting to see what race(s) she gravitates towards as a pro, if that is what she decides to do. She's a monster at the 5k distance for sure. I think a marathon is too much for her with her history of injuries, but keep an eye on Sydney Thorvaldson from Arkansas to be the next bright spot for American marathoners, haha!

Parker is incredible. She is rewriting and smashing the how to train for a long distance. I think in the future you’re going to see a lot more athletes spending half of their time on X training. No more 70 tp 10 mile weeks
Parker is the exception . She trains that way because she has to for her to stay healthy . She’s not going to make it to the Olympics on less than 30 miles a week especially if she moves up to the 10k. To improve at running you have to run more .

Yes, you can have a false start in a Cross-country race. The 1977 Men's NCAA Division I X-C Championships, Spokane, WA, was false-started at -6 below zero with a -20 below zero wind-chill factor, with a light blanket of snow covering the course.

Katelyn raced sick and battled back from 11th, at 4K, to finish 5th to secure the championship for NC State. Touhy is such a class act. I wish nothing but the best for her.

I don't mean to be negative, but did anyone else notice what happened to BYU in this race? They were in first place at the 1k and 2k splits, third place at the 3k and 4k splits, 5th place at the 5k split, and finished in 14th place. Is there a lesson here? Did they go out WAY too fast and die? It was one of the more shocking things I've seen in one of these nationals, especially considering BYU's pedigree and their third place national ranking. Seemed that the announcers totally overlooked it.
maybe your guess is correct, and also I noticed the course was hilly and I think the later stage of the race was a hill and maybe the team did not study the course ahead ot time and ran strategically poor races. Also the announcers mentioned that the early pace was very fast. I heard Valby ran the course the day before and probably made note of key areas to use to her advantage. Just a guess
Congrats to Parker Valby; she's one tough competitor. Would be interesting to know what is affecting Tuohy's performance; best to her and "well done" to all the others who ran this race.
Only chance to beat Valby would have been to take the risk of staying right beside her for about 2K and maybe get Valby to tighten up with nervousness. It is a strategy used by runners back in the 70s when they faced a front runner like Dave Bedford. Bedford would get agitated if he did not get a big lead and it cost him a lot of energy. I will not even knock Tuohy, as by now she knows that Valby will try and get a huge lead and hang on. I read that Tuohy was under the weather so I just respect her 5th place as gutsy. I dont know if these two will ever meet in CC again but I suspect Tuohy would not let Valby get a big lead again. Kudos to Valby for carrying out her strategy and being able to hang on to her lead.

Katelyn Tuohy was sick with a fever of 102 degrees during this race -- as confirmed by Tuohy, Coach Henes, her NC State teammates, and the fact that Tuohy went to the medical tent after the race. In an interview with Citius Mag, Tuohy says she knew from the start of the race that due to her illness she could not contend for the individual title, but she gutted it out for as high of a finish as possible for the TEAM. Tuohy cares most about the team, not her individual performance.
Parker Valby ran a great races. NC State has great morale in order to cover the loss of Kelsey and win the Championship. Smart coaches will interview Parker Valby and her coach bc they showed you can run lower average miles per week and win at the National level. Will Parker return? Will Katlyn change plans and run one or two more years at NC State. Doris & Hilda are now the ones to watch. Parker and Katlyn made the season exciting. Great year !!!!

anyone know if Tuohy will still be competing in college track in 2024 ? I would wonder if she would have to focus on making the Olympics being that she is 21 and she runs risk of peaking as a runner prior to 2028. I guess she would still have the World Championships to compete.
front running can only be pulled off by a superior runner normally. But I suppose cross country is different than the track. in CC a smart runner like Valby speeds up on the downhills and slowly adds to her lead, and also at certain points in CC the lead runner is out of view of the other runners and that is another chance to increase the pace and other runners are not aware. on the track this is not as easy, as the trailing runners can monitor the lead runner. I think Tuohy will have to develop other tactics to handle Valby and if she doesnt other runners will copy Valby but they have to be pretty elite runners. both Valby and Tuohy have yet to tackle the international runners so all bets are off when that happens. add to all that, its possible Tuohy is spreading herself to thin by trying many distances, I am guessing she might just pick one distance and save energy. Once again, only superior runners can double up in the 1500/5K or 5K/10K.

Tuohy was sick: hence her "poor" performance by coming in 5th instead of running down Valby like she did last year.

Why not list the top 5 in no particular order and say "they battle it out"?
if you cared about this race you would have watched it live. All XC fans had been anxiously awaiting this race (rematch) for a year. It was on ESPN.

Valby is the superior specimen. Katelyn got a lucky win in 2022
anyone know if Tuohy will still be competing in college track in 2024 ? I would wonder if she would have to focus on making the Olympics being that she is 21 and she runs risk of peaking as a runner prior to 2028. I guess she would still have the World Championships to compete.
front running can only be pulled off by a superior runner normally. But I suppose cross country is different than the track. in CC a smart runner like Valby speeds up on the downhills and slowly adds to her lead, and also at certain points in CC the lead runner is out of view of the other runners and that is another chance to increase the pace and other runners are not aware. on the track this is not as easy, as the trailing runners can monitor the lead runner. I think Tuohy will have to develop other tactics to handle Valby and if she doesnt other runners will copy Valby but they have to be pretty elite runners. both Valby and Tuohy have yet to tackle the international runners so all bets are off when that happens. add to all that, its possible Tuohy is spreading herself to thin by trying many distances, I am guessing she might just pick one distance and save energy. Once again, only superior runners can double up in the 1500/5K or 5K/10K.
@troybecker8340 Tuohy won a lot last year, but not as much her previous years.
