My fiance and I were homeless in downtown Minneapolis at one point, and me being a 20 year old native American (I mention this because there is a huuuuuge epidemic of Native American women being murdered, kidnapped, etc.) female living in a big city for the first time, I had learned a few things. Let me start off by saying I'm a big girl, 5'9 and about 170lbs and people often tell me I look mean (being a native girl, I kinda have to to protect myself, no matter where I'm at). So let me share what I learned.
    - Mind your fucking business, don't stick your nose where it doesn't belong because that's asking for trouble.
    - Trust your gut, if someone makes you feel weird or start talking crazy, I guarantee you that they aren't someone you want to be around. Anxiety is honestly a survival instinct.
    - Homeless people are a hit or miss, I met some of the coolest people I've ever met, but I've also been around homeless folk that are shady af that I wouldn't like to be around, but that goes for everyone.
    - Be aware of your surroundings, duh.
    - Don't try to act hard, you'll get your shit rocked. Don't act like a pussy, either. Stick up for yourself and don't let anyone walk all over you, you let shit slide one time and mfkrs start ice skating. But don't be acting all bad, either. There's always someone bigger, faster, stronger, and badder than you. Do no harm but take no shit.
    - Don't come off as being afraid, even if you are. People will take advantage of that.
And if someone asks you if your lost, say "no" even if you are.
    - If you can, travel with someone at all times. My fiance barely left my side and idk what would have happened if he wasn't there.
    - Don't be rude without a good reason. Don't be too friendly, either. Be neutral.
    - Don't be a victim. Don't be a beggar either, acting entitled like that will lead you nowhere, nobody likes a beggar that acts like they're entitled to your money. Instead, I suggest finding a hustle if youre strapped for cash. I used to buy cigarettes and sell em for $1 a piece.
    - Use your resources, there are good people out there. Not everyone is out to get you.
    - Libraries are a safe place.
I know this is a lot to read, but this is some of the realest shit I've said and I'm just looking to help. I hope no one ever gets put into that position, but if you do than I hope this can help you. If a 20 year old paranoid girl from a small town can make it out homelessness in Minneapolis alive, so can you. Just be smart and use your head. Blessed be, folks.

When I was in Paris I got really drunk and coked up one night. Some girl I was into rejected me and I was in a weird mood. I stumbled to our airbnb (I have no idea how I found it) singing in fake Italian at the top of my lungs. Took me three hours, stumbling around like an idiot. I must've looked so insane though, because all the homeless people, prostitutes, and all sorts of people of the night I passed would cross to the other side of the street like a block ahead of me to avoid me. Then if they remained there I would gesture at them and sing to them like an insane person as I passed. It was a really weird night. I am normally a shy, skinny guy with zero muscle. It was really interesting to see these hardened, dangerous looking people trying so hard to avoid me.

Bartender's advice on not fighting at all is accurate too. Some people will pretend they're badass, will actively look for fights, and if You happen to smash their face, and they have to go to hospital with even the smallest injury, that tough guy will play victim, go to police and try to gather shit on You, sometimes, while still trying to intimidate and lie away Your reputation. I've seen that happen A LOT of times, and i have to say, as all streetwise people in town (that f.e. in my shithole all know each other) will know who the real pussy is, unfortunately, mostly employers or more influencial people are just not streetwise or they simply don't care. You can get away with pretending You're a big guy but being actually a pussy just with a known fact, that if You get Your face hammered next day the hammerer is sitting in arrest.

If for some reason you go to a little street in a big city there aren't many cars even at daylight.
Beside cars have to stay 1.5M apart from everything else (roughly a car's door opening arch) so you can just walk where parked cars would be and they just won't use that space unless they need to pass another car or it's 1 lane 2 way.

Thelondonbadger na bro that ain’t true at all. For some yes but others not necessarily. You have to take into account the fact that getting a job is hard once your poor especially in America. People won’t hire homeless people for various reasons such as no address to mail checks to. Unclean workers and such. Once you get into that whole whether it’s your fault or not it’s nearly impossible to climb out. Most people on the streets would take a job if they could by are unable to. Almost no one likes begging. All the poor people I know which is a lot btw have been looking for a job as long as I’ve known them. Other times they’ve looked for jobs for years and have finally quite. And even if you get a job at like McDonald’s it still doesn’t pay a living wage for one person. I know people who love in homeless shelter like 3 days a week and work at McDonald’s and other jobs like that and still can’t afford housing and food. So yea not necessarily.

General tips: If you're in an area you're unfamiliar in and don't feel comfortable or safe--- act certifiably insane, unpredictable, or mentally unstable. This goes ESPECIALLY for the ladies. The homeless thing is true. They knew me since I was born, but I didn’t trust them. At the time, we lived on the “bad” side of town. There is suspicious activity in the area but they are like scouts. Here in Cali, there is a free phone program that lets some homeless people get a phone. At first we thought it was a waste of tax money, but they actually helped us a lot. Once, a man, Mike, texted my dad that someone was trying to rob our house. We didn’t believe it at first, but we went to check. And what do you know? Someone was trying to pick our lock. I sorta trusted the homeless in my area more. Of course, this was one of many instances.
And...they are VERY good at making stuff out of nothing. Like making a functioning motorcycle out of broken pieces of cars, trash, ANYTHING
So it’s true, be nice to the homeless, they might help you out a lot.

I always do the "mind your own business" tip. My mother is a very kind woman and would often chat with people and is very friendly and she always gets confused when she is with me because I don't look, care, or pay attention to other people. I mind my own business and I wouldn't waste my time bothering about other peoples shit that might even implicate me in something troublesome or something of a hassle.
The one tip I can give that I learned on the streets are you do not have to fight fair. If someone jumps you, use your surroundings pick a large rock, a handful of sand, use a sharp or blunt object, hitting the groin, neck, or eye, etc... always make sure to utilize your surroundings and you do not have to fight fairly always remember there is no rules in a street fight. But if you can run always choose to run. Don't bother about being called a coward as it is better to be a coward than to be hospitalized or killed. "The best self defense is learning to avoid a fight if necessary".

Speaking as a woman born n raised in NYC, growing up during the 80s 90s: do walk in the middle of the street if you must walk down a dark lonely block, thats true. You can see movement better. Earphones are dangerous. Walk looking up and ahead, fix your posture to your full height, keep a brisk pace. If you feel you are being followed do a 180 start walking in the opposite direction. Sometimes engaging with someone that seems like trouble is inevitable. Your tone and volume of your voice do a lot, as does looking them dead in the eye. Not a crazy staredown, but a solid 2 secs. Learn to speak from your diaphragm (look that up). Keep moving and dont stop. And if it comes down to it n you must get physical NEVER be afraid to go on the offensive rather than just defend. Throat, nose, eyes, balls if theirs are on the outside. Stay safe yall...

once got chased be a what seemed to be a drug dealer. me and my buddies were kinda following him for shits and giggles. he gets to a car and sees us, about 50 feet away. guy starts to yell at us, so i book it. my friend follows shortly after, we pause and turn around. hes about halfway to us, so we get to my friends house.
i assume he was a drug dealer, cause we were like 13, so not like adult but not idiots, and hes like 18. he had nothing to fear from us, but got jumpy when we tailed him to *a* car ( think he had a buddy, might not have been his). so tip: head to an area that people can be safe in, or at worst defend from, and always keep in mind "am i able to call 911 if something does happen?" Just something to keep in mind.

    • @orlock20
      @orlock20 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

Also check the exits before you enter the building. This is a big problem in other countries, because the owner or manager may "lock" or block the exits on the inside or outside to prevent people from sneaking into an area that needs tickets or pay a cover charge. There have been three or four club fires that made the U.S. news in the past decade where people died because the exit doors were "locked."

I always do all of these. When I was dating my wife she asked me why I always picked how we sat at a table or booth. When I told her it was to be able to watch the exits and people coming in she thought I had mild PTSD from being locked up. Probably partly true but my dad always said to sit where you can see everyone coming and going. Also, check the layout of a place by going to the restroom in case you need to make a quick escape. And always keep 360 degree situational awareness no matter where you are in public.

People put their face in a phone and they become invisible. You're not interested in them and they aren't interested in you.

The only good advice on this video was mind your own business, if you walk with purpose and your eyes don't stray 9/10 times you won't have an issue, the tenth time will be an unavoidable one but that's why you'll be aware of your surroundings and ready to fight or run.

Like 9/10 time the "nod" has worked but if your walking around in a place like manitou you're going to eventually get that tweaked out dude that takes everything as a "fight me" and they are always the worst people to fight they scratch, bite, yank your hair like a fucking push mower and the only way you're doing to win that fight is if you can hit hard enough to knock then out anything less just makes then angry

I’ve had the aggressive friend approach tried on me a lot when I was working down south for a few years. I was away from home a lot and people would try this with me. I’d tell them every time, “I ain’t looking to make friends, I’m just here to work,” and say it with a little assertiveness and they would back off.

    My perspective street smarts:
*Learn all the backstreets as much as possible of each city you visit, especially the ones that barely any cars and people use (and if fast enough some shortcuts cars can't be in) and use those to get to where you go faster
*Keep conversations with unknown people short
*If you see groups that consists of 3-4+ people, keep moving
*See a fight? Keep moving, don't get involved
*Seen a crime? You're now a witness. Look around for any of those known backstreets and retreat and possibly be ready for 25+ years cause you'll be 75% likely gonna have to kill for self defense
*Invest in a car & a bicycle (with a good D lock), nobody can catch up to these on foot alone, even if fit

If they ask you for the time, just answer "I dont have my phone with me" they'll instantly betray themselves, if he was genuine he'll answer something in the lines of "okay, thanks anyway" if he was already intending to rob you he'll say something like "are you sure".
Also don't you ever let someone get close to you, all it takes is an arm around your head, a small sharp object in the other hand and you are pretty much at his mercy. (This can be hard in crowded places)
Dont be afraid to call for help, better lose some pride than lose an eye.
If you are a girl, in the streets at night, I'm sorry to say that but you'll need to be 200% more vigilant otherwise you are playing with fire.
Last but not least, dont try and replicate what you learn in martial art, all it take is a knife or a gun and that black belt in karate wont be of any use (except on the mental side where you'll have an advantage)
What else can I add? At the ATM when you take money, dont lose time putting your card in your wallet/bag and same thing with the actual money. Just shove it as fast as possible in your pocket and get moving quickly.
When walking in the street DO NOT put your hands in your pocket even if its freezing cold, that's an invitation because you are giving away that I'm a weak person, walk with your arms doing the opposite movement of your legs (right leg forward left arm forward etc.) And spread your fingers dont keep them closed, that shows that you are confident.
Please don't go for a walk at 3 of the morning, that's just dumb.... wait for the first lights of the day at least.
In a group of friend, if shit goes wrong care about yourself first, you wont be able to help anyone if you are the one who got hit etc.

@@youcansmile683 you sure? Go ahead and walk with your hands in your pockets. Plus it affects your capacity to react/block quickly. Dont tell me my advice make no sense because I wish someone gave them to me when I was younger. Getting jumped by 4+ guys at 15 years old by a bunch of college students isnt fun, getting robbed isnt fun.
Dont like the advice dont do it, but I can assure you everything is 100% legit.

@@MrOdaniels I've been attacked multiple times, and one thing that I noticed that it diminished when I stopped putting my hands in my pockets, because it makes you look more confident, and you are able to defend quicker. Plus I live in Africa so maybe it has to do with the culture I dont know. The fact is, it works for me and you'll never find me walking with not atleast one hand not able to quickly stop a treat.
