The hidden fee is probably the corpo tax. Same as special characters and addon packs. Complexity does add costs just because of sculpting times. But the raw materials and labor costs definitely can get inflated by that inflation. Why should one phobos captain model cost 56% of the 10 man phobos team? Or 67% of a normal intercessor team. Points per dollar can be factored in occasionally, but realistically, models/plastic per dollar can be redonk-a-donk. Disclaimer: I am very dumb, this could all be wrong. Please for the love of waffles fact check me haha. In theory, one could get 1400 pounds of high impact polystyrene for about 1900 dollary doos. That's $1.35 per pound. Considering a full set of sprues for 10 intercessors weighs about 175 grams, that's $0.52 per box of intercessors. I spoke with my sibling who used to work in industrial fabrication too. They said that an injection mold the size of a basic 8.5 by 5.5 inch sprue would cost about $2000-2500. In another insider look for another mini company (I forgot which vid, I can find it if anyone wants to check it out), the company had their own injection mold making mills/cncs. It's fair to assume these larger mini companies do have in house systems in place to make their own molds too. I just fact checked this on the midwest steel and aluminum site and two large billets would cost you about $2500! Those two sunk costs will also be recovered very quickly considering how big GW is. The same goes for machinery, but now we're getting into long term assets, which include buildings and such. Those are still important to consider, but with mass production those costs can be covered by bulk magic. Although, I don't know too much about UK taxes, and tariffs and import and export costs are also really nasty for british stuff these days. So, all that is left is box cost, sculptor hours, and labor. Since it takes about 2 minutes (from my own research and what my sibling said) to inject and pop out a sprue, the hours per sprue are minimal for the mold operator. The pellet prep guy likely has his own costs too. I went to the GW job listings and the "material handler", which could cover a range of jobs, which may include handling machinery and those associated materials, like pellets. They get paid $20 bucks and hour too. Overall, the employee costs aren't egregious. So, time for heavy guess-timation. Let's assume it takes an hour for the material guy to get the pellets prepped for a whole batch (+ $20). But that batch isn't for one sprue, but many. Let's say they have a big bin with 100 pounds of material (~45300 grams). It takes about 2 minutes to inject a mold and get it out (20*0.03 = $0.66). Another couple minutes to box the guys up and shrink wrap them ($2-5 per box + 5 minutes = $1.66 - $4.66). The raw pellet cost of, in this case intercessors, would be $0.52. Now applying the amount of work the pellet prepper did (175/45300 = 0.0038*20 = $0.08). One box of intercessors in raw materials and labor would cost about $5.92. With utilities, overhead, sunk costs, and storage factored in let's just estimate with a flat $10 (maybe 15 if the Uk is more brutal than I'm assuing). Now, for UK prices they sell intercessors at about $50 (40 pounds) a box. So the local markup is at and added 400%. For places like the US, shipping is a factor, and these days 10 bucks in shipping per box wouldn't surprise me, putting US local prices at 62.5 per box. Overall, with my dumb dumb math, the prices of their minis are very likely hyper inflated. Also, 10 votann is only three 8.5 by 5.5 sprues, and that costs 60 bucks. THATS RIGHT GW, I can see you reading this. I would rather give someone else money for a product that’s going to be of similar quality to what you offer but cheaper. $3500 for 3500 points of slag isn’t great GW.
Yeah I know at this point honestly just sell us the 3d prints it would probably be cheaper also we wouldn't get as pissed with terrible 3d printing lines like the HH alpha legion sniper.
Simply put, GW is a scam company in general regardless of material. If you want to see it in action, head down to your local Hobby store and pick up a Gundam kit. A Captain in Terminator Armor will set you back about $44 and get you 1 sprue of injection molded grey plastic to create a mono-pose 2-ish inch tall miniature that requires painting. It has 2 weapon options for each arm but, unless magnetized, can only have 1 set. Gluing is required. A Real Grade RX-78-2 Gundam Kit will set you back about $31 and get you 10 sprues of injection molded pre-colored plastic to create a fully articulated 5-ish inch tall figure. It comes with 3 interchangeable weapons, a shield, and a detachable fighter jet with tiny pilot. Sprues are multi-colored (different sections of sprues have different colors) and no painting is requires but you can paint it if desired. No gluing needed. Gundam shows that injection molds don't magically inflate the cost of a product to the insane degree that GW thinks it should. Between that and 3D Printing getting bigger and bigger I don't see how GW can continue to justify raising prices over lowering them.
It seems like you are confusing forgeworld resin, forgeworld and plastics and Games Workshop. Plastic can be either GW mainline or Forgeworld/SDS, which has been muddied thanks to the websites merging.
No matter how you break it down GW stuff no matter what it is made out of is insanely overpriced. Look at plastic they keep going up and up as the price for everything goes down and the tech gets cheaper. The plastic its self one ton of the plastic GW uses is only a couple of hundred bucks some of the bigger kits costs almost as much as one ton of plastic does ha.
Its not hypocritical of them to use 3d printing to make masters and test models. They aren't against 3d printing, they are against copyright infringement lol.
Always, the best way to start a 40k army is print the miniatures on paper and place them on a cardboard base.

To be fair, FW is using 3d printing for what it was meant for. 3d printing wasnt invented for cheap wargaming minis.
Nah it's not hypocritical, it's just the way masters are made these days.
Yeah I know at this point honestly just sell us the 3d prints it would probably be cheaper also we wouldn't get as pissed with terrible 3d printing lines like the HH alpha legion sniper.
Just reassure yourself that because it's FW, the rules have to be garbage.
Forge world plastics are cheaper than mainline games.
I may be stupid but 6:51
147-43 should be 104 but I know silly hyperfixate folks (like us) are bad at math
looked at my notes I think I fat fingered the 3 instead of a 2 should be $42
How is your channel this small???
YT algorithm
why is this true
First
Lmao resin printers go brrrr.
You don't need to do this as of December 31st
Warhammer will get more expensive
