The brutal brutal truth about Warhammer 40k is that it is the Call of Duty of wargaming and people are too addicted and have blinders to really play outside the ecosystem.

Three years into the hobby and I still haven't played a match. My brother and I tried once. After three hours of trying to figure out the ridiculously complicated rules, and only accomplishing one turn, we gave up. Then I heard about Grimdark Future one page rules and after looking into it, that's what we're trying now. I think more 40K youtubers should talk about Grimdark Future. It's a lot easier to get into the hobby when you only need a few pages of rules rather than multiple massive books that are hundreds of pages long.

  • @GrimdarkCrusader20th

Here's a controversial one, be the change you want to see in the hobby. If you don't like GW's pricing structure don't buy from them. If you don't like their rules don't run them. 40k is a big enough community that alternatively sourced minis is up to your standards on what is acceptable. Remember GW showed off an army that was 90 percent recasts during the Betrayal at Calth boxset promotion. This hobby is all about what you make it, GW might own the IP, but they're your models don't fall into corporate stockholm syndrome.

I recommend better games and even games that don't require using the manufacturers minis. People are mostly conformists and want to remain with a larger in-group. They cope with the fact they don't want to feel left out. Trying to get Warhammer fans to stop playing Warhammer 40k is like trying to get an addict to stop doing drugs. You can always play older editions with old rules. It's what I do if I feel like playing 40k. But most people just want to play what's most convenient rather than what's practical.

People don't always get into Warhammer because it's convenient, some people like the setting for what it is: a Space Fantasy about humanity raging against the dying of the light. The sudden push from influencers pushing some old loretubers out was kind of when I got gatekeepy as I was a Star Wars refugee when I was first getting into 40k and didn't want to see the same garbage happen again.

Best advice for a new person, is actually to take it slow, you'll find a lot of people who have spent a lot on warhammer, buy things because they are 'a deal', you keep doing that and you'll find it'll be more than you can keep up with, instead try to buy one or two kits at a time, build and paint them, then look to your next purchase, you may miss out on some 'deals', or even models, this way, but you'll spend less overall. Those large army boxes may be good value, but can be a grey plastic trap.

If you want to get into miniature wargaming, start with BattleTech: A Game of Armored Warfare. It is $50, comes with a rulebook that really has not changed since 1985, a hex map that actually fits on a coffee table, and 8 mechs that are new, cool looking sculpts of mechs that have stats that have not changed...ever. An "Army" is just 4 mechs, and mechs are easy to paint. Just paint them army green with a metallic cockpit window. The box also includes the stat cards for the eight mechs for the Alpha Strike, simpler/faster game, and that is what I play now. Alpha Strike is great. Just download the free starter rules for that. However, still by this box as it is the best value for money.

I've got a good controversial one: Every buck you spend on miniatures, doesn't go back into miniatures.
One of the things that many people dont really take into account when purchasing Warhammer miniatures is that you're more than likely purchasing into the Warhammer IP which covers the books, miniatures, paints, licenses, and just about everything else. The money that you give to GW isn't just going directly back into the miniature making, but is capital that is invested back into the IP. Our hobby seems to be only a small part in what is an otherwise, global wargaming brand. It is apparent that the market will bear the price of a miniature. It more strikes me that a bunch of what GW produces is bloating the price since they have so much that they need to maintain and produce, AoS, 40k, LoTR, HH, and all the rest of their boxed games for the wargaming scene alone. Their manpower seems strained which could explain the balance and design issues since they are spread across such a vast expanse of armies and settings. Thats not to mention the cost of *everything* going up because of inflation.
Not justifying these prices and if you think I am, then you're part of the problem: always saying "bring down the prices!" Which, yes, is valid, but you're not actually pulling at their strings. By understanding these, we can begin to identify where we can strike them the hardest. Do a little yar har haring and delegitimize the use case of their products if we want to keep playing WH. But if a comeptitor is to rise up, its going to take a long time. In the meantime, just break their rules and don't give them your buckaroos while still using their stuff.

This hobby can be VERY expensive. You do not NEED to invest time/money in any particular aspect of the Warhammer universe. If you don't like painting, you don't NEED to do so. Don't like lore and just want to run generic models on the table? Go right ahead! Opponent doesn't like that aspect? Find a new one!
If you're just looking to have fun painting cool models, look around at other companies. Plenty of games exist, and the models are great. Many are less expensive, too!

There are historical miniatures which aren't that expensive, Warlord games has quite a variety of time periods. There's a company called Mantic Games that has some great boxes with a ton of minis (mainly fantasy but they do have a sci-fi game). You can also look around for miniature board games and other wargames at an Lgs. Reaper miniatures has a lot of single minis. I have recently bought a starter set from Mantic Games: Firefight and I have compared it to GW's Starter Sets. Then it made me compare the two companies overall. And I came to these conclusions:
    - The Mantic starter sets have two complete armies in them that are big enough to make up a good and fun game without any additions. Any further purchase from Mantic becomes just a cherry on top for if you really want it.
In GWs starter boxes there is barely enough miniatures for a base game and the "game" you get out of them lacks dymanics and veriety. GW designs these boxes to make you crave more miniatures, just so you can satisfy your basic need for a fun basegame.
Mantic offers you more if you want it. GW manipulates you into wanting more.
    - Overall Manticgames offers you entire big armies for prices under 200 Dollars. In GW you wont even have a baseline 1500 point Space Marine army. That needs 600+ Dollars.
    - Mantic games miniatures are not as detailed as GW minis. GW has the upper hand here. But you pay for this slight upper hand with 3x to 4x times the cost. But that doesnt mean Mantic games minis are ugly. they arent! they are still really nice builds and for an average painter its incredibly hard to really take advantage of the details in GW minis anyways.
    - The Rules for Manticgames are free on their Website. GW forces you to either buy a giant book that is obsolete in 3-4 years, or buy a starter set for a mini version.
    - after playing firefight for a while me and my friend realised: We had MUCH more fun with firefight than we had with Warhammer 40k atm and we could recall the last time having that much fun with 40k to the time way before 2017! The biggest causes for this are: Firefight is an activation-based game. You activate and use a unit, I activate and use a unit. Like a game of chess. It keeps you engaged constantly because you dont have to wait for your opponent to make their turn for their entire army. You also dont have that awkward situation where your opponent starts the match and shoots half of your army dead before it even had the chance to make one turn. The Mantic rules are also way less bloated and complex. Wich can be a bummer for some rule cracks, but it makes the game so much easier to understand and play fluently. A game of Firefight with an equal army size to 40k takes only half the time to play and you had fun and engagement for the entire time.
    - The developers and owners of Mantic Games engage directly with the community. the men who make the game are gamers and have passion for what they do. In GW the men who make the game are businessmen with no personal connection to their product. the people with passion for their game can only be found in the low and middle ranks of the company and you can feel that in all of their decisions.
    - The Mantic pricing is transparent and easy to grasp over their whole range. Thats a big unit, it costs this. Thats a troop unit, it costs this. The GW pricing is all over the place, based on throwing tea leaves and bones.
So in my conclusion: Mantic is WAY cheaper (fact), still looks great (fact), the game is more fun (subjective), the devs are eye to eye with the customers (fact)
And then there is OnePageRules! You can take all these points I said about mantic and export them exactly like that on OnepageRules and it fits perfectly too! And there is other game companies doing the same!
GW has games with great Lore and art, wich is the only reason their systems keep us hooked. but to me that doesnt justify all the negatives about their game and products. If you have never played alternatives I really recommend you to try it. And I promise you: You will be SO upset when you experience first hand what a low quality experience GW actually offer you, compared to their competitors.

Another brutal truth is that GW has convinced the community to be its biggest pool of unpaid salesman. So many people i see are concerned with getting people into the game. I genuinely dont care to be their salesmen unless they pay me. Aww yeah, new handy video. Time to get to taking out their command, one by one. Valus Ta'aurc. From what I can gather, he commands the Siege Dancers from an Imperial Land Tank outside of Rubicon. He's well protected, but with the right team, we can punch through those defenses, take this beast out, and break their grip on Freehold."

When I was a kid I wanted to try 40K. I had the time but not the money. I'm now an adult with a house and above-average income in a developed country.. I could maybe make the time but looking at the costs. Let's say it's £1500 to get one army and the other stuff you need. But that army might go from strong to useless in a month. Now I want to buy another army because mine's useless. That's another £1000. I'm proabably looking at ~150 hours to do the painting and learn some rules. Then I can play some games. All this is too much. I can't commit these resources to hobby unless I know I'll love it and even then it's a stretch.

Do not pick an army like drukhari as a first army. Armies that are a small range, spindly tiny elves, expensive, key models locked in finecast, and a high difficulty curve will be taxing to start with. Ussually the smaller armies are neglected as well, so starting out you are going to have limited options and no hope of a full rules release anytime soon. I started with drukhari and love the army, but it's been difficulty to learn an expensive. I would have dropped drukhari and pivoted to something else if I didn't have 4 other DE players around me. With it being a small playerbase most people won't be that lucky.

I have been into warhammer for about 14 years and has NEVER bought any models or been to any tabletop gaming store. I engage with Warhammer fantasy and 40k purely for the lore, read all the books and play P'n'P role-playing game with friends, and as the Game masters, develop unique lore friendly characters and stories. write my own fanfic, build up my own whole sub-sectors of planets, unique guard regiments and cultures, Sororitas convents and space marine origins.
