I'll be honest, and this may be a hot take. I'm happy if I go up against an army that is painted at all. I don't even care if its badly painted at all, just shows to me that someone's time and energy was put into the army, and that they were willing to let that creative process be seen by all.
As someone who started with this kind of army in my teens and exactly those nice people at my FLGS I really want to thank you and the guys from 'The Attic' at around 2012, best way to cling to the hobby 😊
One thought for the Outriders is to paint the bikes as if they were horses, with horse spots and marking and all that. Not sure what to do with the marines, but the idea of painting bike cavalry as horse cavalry is a fun one imo.
i think it would be really cool if the bladeguard has really bright shields so it would "confuse' the enemy while looking at them so it would kinda function like blitz from rainbow six siege. Also love the vids keep it up :)
Look up razzle dazzle camo ( used on ships in ww1, interbellum and early WW2) would be really cool to file all details off /give em flat shields and ' edge highlight' the shit out of everything but the actual edges. 😂❤. When your Op thinks he sees an opening and strikes!.... Still your shield. 🎉😂
with resin you need to first give them a scrub with warm soapy water and a toothbrush because there is a substance on the resin to let it be released from the molds more easily put paint and primer don't stick to it very well.
That tech marine looks really cool! Great job on that. Jokes aside your kitbashing is very ambitious for your first time, but I think you pulled it off wonderfully. The colourful jump packs look very cool.
Honestly, if you're getting Blade guard, you've got a great option for splashes of color. Their gauntlets all have a detail on them that can bear a colored metallic shade very nicely, and any model with a crotch tabard is perfect for adding color while keeping your scheme the same. So Sternguard, Blade guard make for great models to have alternating colors on. Plus all the blade guard have iron Halo's as well, so there's opportunity there too!
I think that this is the best custom chapter The style The message it sends It's just amazing And the scheme is really great Some might say that the various range of colours doesn't fit the overall aesthetic of a classic type space marine But man the colours make those units look crispy And they're black And that's the thing to makes them interesting Because I don't say it's bad how most of the black space marines are painted But what makes black armor stands out? The other colours that make it look more vibrant more eyes catching than just plain
I just like the creativity of the army. In fact creativity is one of my favorite parts of the hobby and I always enjoy see what people come up with. When I try to get people into the hobby its one of my selling points, that you can mold these models in any way you want. Personally I'm always trying to come with unique schemes for each of my armies. Do they turn out perfect all the time? No but their my little pieces of art.
I do have an idea for your bladeguard vets. make them Jedi/Sith they already look super cool and your army scheme really opens up options to make their "Lightsabers" pop. For your outriders (forever my beloved) maybe go with a Hells angels/biker gang style. Also I HIGHLY reccomend the bike chaplain as he makes the outriders go from good to low tier gods. Hope you like these ideas as I am a big fan of your stuff and I hope things get better for you next year!
It's taken me nearly 7 months to paint a standard color 1k army and I've spent WAY too much time learning and practicing 'glowy metal' techniques. I think 3 years is a pretty decent amount of time spent on a custom army. The F-Zero X inspiration is really cool and I like the motto 'If everything is loud, then nothing is'. Cheers and have a Merry Christmas! Will look forward to your 2025 showcase of running up the board too much!
Don't worry about the colors. All my Tyranid models have a unique paint job down to the spore mine. It looks like someone barfed Skittles on the table, but I never get bored painting.
What a great video to cap off the year! I'm happy to see another of these "hobby vlog" style videos again. Since I always loved the older vids you made chronicling your hobby journey, reflecting on lessons learned through your models and what you hope to do going forward. Great stuff! My favorite bit had to be the "Procrastination Void", because it really got me not just from the comedy, but also because I've been in such hobby slumps before and am currently in the midst of the worst hobby slump I've ever experienced so far in my hobby lifetime. . . On a different note, I agree with most of your points here about mistakes and places to improve with your painting. ESPECIALLY thinning that white on your Lieutenant. If youre going to paint Knights Excelsior thinning out your whites and off-greys properly is *essentail* to making them look good. However, one point I'd pushback on is painting Resin. Because when it comes to regular resin minis, you NEED to wash them in a basin of war, soapy water before you can prime/paint them, otherwise they will chip due to the residue of a chemical agent let on the model that helps free their parts from the mould. Now Ive never painted a 3D printed resin model before, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. If you don't need to scrub them down, thats fine, but I have a suspicion that might be why they're chipping. Either that, or because need to be varnished and your hand oils are just eroding the paint more quickly on these than your others. Which is also possible. Now, as for themes for the next batch of Screaming Ravens models. I REALLY want to see you theme the Outriders after the main trio of Kamen Rider Gotchard. This would be a deeo cut reference, but, the number 3 is a consistent, important theme in that show, and I think that you could do some *very* cool and interesting paintjobs or kitbashes themed around its core cast of characters and their suits. If not, any 3 Kamen Rider suit designs you just like the look of or think are cool would work as well. Since every main character of this franchise has a uniqe motorbike that they ride. For the Judiciar amd Bladeguard, I'm pretty sure I left an idea for it either on a prior video or community post, but instead of finding it and doing a copypasta, I'm going to come up with a new idea. For the Judiciar, I have an idea, it's a bit out there and would require a TON of kitbashing effort, but it would add SO much texture to the lore of your Chapter. So, for regular Marines, a Judiciar is sworn to silence until they become a formal Chaplain. What if, the Screaming Ravens' take that idea a step further? Their Judiciars are forebidden from using their unique sign language until they are made Chaplain, and to ensire that they don't break this solemn vow, the Judiciars have Tech-Priests remove their hands and replace them with basic clamps, or holders for their weapons, and only once they become Chaplain do they get bionic hands from the Mechanicus that they can use to communicate with the Chapter's Sign Language once again. If that's a bit too far out there, I'd understand. An alternative idea could be that you make the Judiciar a reference to the Heroe's Shade from Twilight Princess, but maybe that's something to save for a "real" Chaplain. As for the Bladeguard, you could go for the main trio of Gotchard if you don't do that for the Outriders. But that's too obvious. So, here's another crazy kitbashing idea, make the faces of their shields into screens that flash crazy, seizure-inducing colors at their enemies, while the armor of the Veterans themselves is just in the Chapter's basic colors. Or maybe paint them with a sort of reflective chrome paint and turn then into literal MIRROR shields, to confuse the enemy or force the filthy Heretics to look at the monsters they have become. For the Jump-Pack Intercessors, make the main 4 themed in some way after tha cardinal directions of a compass, then have the unit Sargent be the metaphorical "needle" of the compass, pointing the other memebers in the direction they need to strike. That one is a bit open-ended, but that I think is the beauty of it, you can interpret how you theme each model after a unique direction according to your own artistic vision, instead of having to capture the look of a thing that already exists. That all being said however. How DARE you try to rewrite History and leave the Desolation Squad out of your inspiration for this Chapter Paul?!?!?!?!?!???? It was part of the very first video you made that mentioned the Screaming Ravens! This injustice will not stand! In all seriousness, great job! Here's to bigger and better things in 2025 for all of our armies. I can't wait to see what you come up with next!😁👍
I love the whole idea of, If everything is loud nothing is. for the bladeguard I suggest painting the helmet, pauldrons and the outline of the shield the same colour. I did that with my blood angel bladeguard (gold) and it looked really cool in my opinion.
I just painted my first ever model yesterday and im super happy to see that the mistakes i made are pretty common lol Definitely nice seeing other people still struggle with the same ofdities. Your inverted colors idea tho was the coolest in my opinion since the result actually came out like you imagined it! Paul is creative at stuff
Hey, I really enjoyed this video. I hope that they continue as you finish units. I really like the idea of you going over your work and it helps me learn as well. Valuable content.
I like the vibe of this chapter I am painting my guys in official colors (Salamanders for SM and THA for leagues of votann). but this seems like a very cool way of doing it ngl lol As for the ideas, throwing some stuff into the ether: - For bladeguard, how about giving every bladeguard a different weapon? Technically what they use is "Master-crafted power weapon". It uses to be "power sword" in 9e, but now it's "power weapon". Could give every bladeguard vet a different weapon. Claws if you have spare from previous boxes, maybe some weapons from upgrade sprues? Salamander's have power hammer, dark angel has some nice looking runic sword, blood angels have some simpler power swords. - for bikes, maybe sonic characters? You know gotta go fast. Blue for sonic, red for knuckles, orange for tails, pink-red for Amy, black-red-white for shadow and red black yellow for eggman? Or take the emeralds colors? White, red, yellow, green, cyan, blue and purple? Tho that's just giving them one colors I guess lol. Tho I guess bikes could be painted in the color of an emerald and the marine in a colors of sonic characters
I really like the OSL for that Thunder Hammer. Also I almost never bothered to drill gun barrels when I had my CSM, so I understand the lack of desire to do that.
the paint job is good. for your upcoming models I would suggest flames for the outriders but in a more blue and purple style instead of red and yellow. Idk about the other models. I think you faction theme is cool and has a lot more freedom than mine(i went with Iron Ravens which is also successor raven guard). As for your comment on gun barrels, I prefer to drill mine but I dont care what others do to their models so yeah. nice vid
As someone who began model building/painting NASCAR and IMSA race cars, I find It kind of funny when warhammer guys say “I hate transfer sheets” but they can free hand chapter logos. Decals/transfers are so much easier lol. That’s all I use to do was decals. 100s per car. And I found them to be the easiest part of the whole build.
You should try some custom poses for the outriders! Maybe one popping a wheelie, another doing a very original nod to akira perhaps, or whatever other ideas could work. Maybe one is standing on the bike instead or riding it normally
For your jump pack unit(s?), consider the Horus heresy box. It's 10 guys instead of 5 and they're cool beaky marines! 😊 Unless you prefer the primaris ones ofc. Go with what looks cooler to you. 👍 ( I play alpha legion, depending on mood I run the marine or the csm codex, and for me the Horus heresy jump pack assault marines work great as either intercessors or raptors. 😅😊🎉) Also, agreed kayvaan shrike/ alpharius cosplaying as him, is a great& fun character. And I LOVE his phobos keyword, fantastic in the vanguard detachment.
That inverted Lieutenant is really wild. Wish I could do the same for my T'au, but my army is a drab green over gray (with red, silver and gold accents) and inverting an image of one just turns it white. Maybe I just need a better camera...
For some squad / model ideas: Maybe you could take some inspiration from bionicle for the outriders? For example basing them on the Toa Mata and dividing the squads into the ones representing Gali, Lewa and Kopaka (squad Wairuha) and Tahu, Pohatu and Onua (squad Akamai) named after the combination models of the sets. The jump pack intercessors could be based on the main mobile suits from gundam wing maybe replacing the backpacks with some conversion parts. And maybe since Judiciars are sworn to silence give him a giant boombox?
To me, the Judiciar model has always had a menacing, final boss aura to it. I'd recommend having the parts that are homages reflect that. Like maybe Gannon from Ocarina of Time, or may be even Dracula from Castlevania if you can find a good head swap
For the jump intercessors, I like the idea of a Super Mario theme in honour of the great Jumpman himself. Focussing the colours on the boots and helmets?
For the Judiciar it would be pretty cool if you replaced the time glass thing, with like a soda or something. Can you imagine an emo space marine with a skull helmet carrying around a massive jug of Mountain Dew, that would be rather peak imo.
13:40 It may be me under the ''I REGRET my Custom Space Marine Paint Scheme'', But I do believe that a lot of people may have made similar comments on youtube or discord
hey paul as someone who does a lot of dry brushing i can highly recomand a makup brush yes just a makeup brush becuase the brislles are very soft that paint applys very lightly to the model giving a very uttly beatiful effect if you want i can send you some pics on discord of what im talking about!!
If you want a squad idea for those Jump pack intercessors, since there's 5 of them, you can look to any number of 5 man squads from across media. What about each of their jump packs being coloured after the 5 Voltron lions? Your stuff looks badass as always.
Great Video, love your content! (Also: I think your Kayvaan Shrike is way cooler than the Techmarine by the Steve the Smug...) Paint scheme idea: For the outriders you could do the legendary birds with 3 different small free-hands (one flames, one snowflakes, one lightning)!
Noble team as a theme or the home nation colours of the UK! (Maybe even include Eire as its the only country we share a border with, excluding overseas territories)
To continue the classic Nintendo references, for the outriders you could base their colours on Extreme-G for the N64 although that game is more on the obscure side
My chaos knights are all over the place in color scheme. 3of them are bought form some other person. I have a cerastis knight painted in a valentines color scheme, a rampager painted after sinanju from gundam, and a war dog painted in my 2 year college school colors
My successor chapter is the void ravens, black and dark purple with bright purple highlights and dark sulver trim. Purple eyes. My chapter master rides on a giant raven, wish i could show it
This idea might work best on a lone character, but paint just one model or units as an ultramarines with the screaming raven’s symbol. “Why is there just one ultramarine here! Where are the rest of them?!”
I wouldn't buy assault intersessors with jump packs, I would buy the Horus Heresy assault marines, you get 10 models for about the same cost. Add plasma pistols and a power fist and you are sorted
I have a bunch of jump intercessors from a christmas box thing from a while ago which also had outriders, so fortunately I don't have to buy anything! I'll keep the HH stuff in mind though because lots of jump lads is always going to be useful!
16:14 get 30k MKVI assult squad instead, u get beaky helmets, aaand the kit is 10minis for the price of 5 40k assults. they still have the same shaped veapons. probably fit in better with your Screaming ravens imo :)
Try sunlu toughness resin, it's a little more expensive, but it is more tough and has a rubbery quality to it. I like to use it on models with small bits.
If you are into any sports you could paint a squad based off the team colours. The bikes could be based off the Biker Mice from Mars. Not sure if people remember that old show. But you said you liked the N64 so some Banjo Kazooie marines mayhaps?
8:20 Yeah, you might be overdoing the weathering a bit. Every surface looks like it's had a fight with a wheel grinder. It's a very had effect to justify happening naturally. especially with a lack of rust. Just weather the edges like the first dreadnought and I think you'll be happier with it.
You seem to reference a lot of Nintendo in your army. Mayhap a Fire Emblem theme for the Judiciar/Blade Guard? I think Three Houses and Engage in particular could provide quite a bit of inspiration
Suggestion for the Outriders. Mario kart, it lines up nicely with the "Classic Games" sub theme you have stumbled into and would allow the inclusion of a Invader ATV down the line if you felt like adding one.
Personally I think if you look into how others have made the outriders into hover bikes that would be a really interesting way to go with them. Don't know about the inspiration for colour schemes, maybe starwars space ships?
Specifically the conversion that I saw is the: Void Ravens Jetbike Thrusters by dicepunk Studios I could see them being perfect for the Screaming Ravens
For your outriders why don't you do a scheme inspired by ancient empires, like, each model is inspired by romans, knights, samurai, ancient Mongolians. You can also do this for your bladegaurd
an idea someone else has said, which i think would be great, is that squad with the nerfgun like rocket launchers, but each left paldron has a number. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 wheres number five you may ask? the brutalis dreadnought right behind you.

Hey Paul you should do a squad of persona users
wow, that techmarine
Definitely the only good miniature in the lot 😉
We can feel the Steve's smug smirks.
I'll be honest, and this may be a hot take. I'm happy if I go up against an army that is painted at all. I don't even care if its badly painted at all, just shows to me that someone's time and energy was put into the army, and that they were willing to let that creative process be seen by all.
How is that a hot take? Those are genuinely kind words you just spoke
Because I am said person with the poorly painted army. You'll certainly notice it, but to call it appealing is...something else entirdly.
As someone who started with this kind of army in my teens and exactly those nice people at my FLGS I really want to thank you and the guys from 'The Attic' at around 2012, best way to cling to the hobby 😊
Badly painted miniatures are ok to me because my friend is new to painting miniatures I am used to seeing that
Man I love that original Screaming Raven model. Glad it inspired a whole army
Devastator Centurions exist and are better than any of the units you like.
Did you know that Centurion Devastators exist?
Hello ? Excuse me ? Yes, you ! Have you ever heard of Devastator Centurions ?
I’ve been summoned to remind you of the devastator centurions
@@PaulIsBadAtStuff I prefer Allarus Terminators.
Spite is a powerful motivator, "I'll show them" great for getting something done
Maybe kitbash some spotlights or strobes to the front of the shield? That’d be cool!

Thanks. Yeah I've learned that for the future, but I've not used any resin since 👍
That tech marine looks really cool!
Great job on that.
Jokes aside your kitbashing is very ambitious for your first time, but I think you pulled it off wonderfully. The colourful jump packs look very cool.
More centrions needed

Congrats!
I still haven’t finished my 2000 pts space marine army in over 3 years so it is nice seeing a fully painting army.
@16:30 😅 I spent a few hours drilling storm bolters (...and assault cannons) on 30 terminators last night.
I spent a few hours drilling ur m- (my lawyers have told me not to continue this joke)
Drilling gun barrels does look cool but I'm very lazy
YAY, screaming ravens video. woooooo
I think that this is the best custom chapter
The style
The message it sends
It's just amazing
And the scheme is really great
Some might say that the various range of colours doesn't fit the overall aesthetic of a classic type space marine
But man the colours make those units look crispy
And they're black
And that's the thing to makes them interesting
Because I don't say it's bad how most of the black space marines are painted
But what makes black armor stands out?
The other colours that make it look more vibrant more eyes catching than just plain

That outrider kit is a nightmare brought from hell to assemble correctly be carefiul paul
11:04 that is genuinely one of the cooler paint scheme concepts I've seen
Really beautiful work! This is such a fun color scheme. It's a real joy to look at. Also, the color inverted leftenant is bad ass
Nice Techmarine!
No notes, Conggratulations on your finished army!!!!! I got 4 models short to finish mine this year TT
Don't worry about the colors. All my Tyranid models have a unique paint job down to the spore mine. It looks like someone barfed Skittles on the table, but I never get bored painting.

The inverse Lieutenant is actually such a cool idea and came out really nice
That inverted Lieutenant is really wild. Wish I could do the same for my T'au, but my army is a drab green over gray (with red, silver and gold accents) and inverting an image of one just turns it white. Maybe I just need a better camera...
For some squad / model ideas:
Maybe you could take some inspiration from bionicle for the outriders?
With all of the video game references, the Judiciar having a Final Fantasy inspire would work.
13:40 It may be me under the ''I REGRET my Custom Space Marine Paint Scheme'', But I do believe that a lot of people may have made similar comments on youtube or discord
Paint guide soon? Maybe for a character model? Like say, the Techmarine?
Yell at Steve for a techmarine painting tutorial. My guide is "panic and throw paint at the model until it looks ok"
I suggest yelling while painting. Really adds to the cathartic and theraputic experience
Impossible! a non grey army… I thought they were just a myth a legend
hey paul as someone who does a lot of dry brushing i can highly recomand a makup brush yes just a makeup brush becuase the brislles are very soft that paint applys very lightly to the model giving a very uttly beatiful effect if you want i can send you some pics on discord of what im talking about!!
If you want a squad idea for those Jump pack intercessors, since there's 5 of them, you can look to any number of 5 man squads from across media. What about each of their jump packs being coloured after the 5 Voltron lions?
Your stuff looks badass as always.
15:09 dude u should paint moreones like that techmarine! :DDD
for the blade guard you could base them off templar orders or English nobles
Great Video, love your content! (Also: I think your Kayvaan Shrike is way cooler than the Techmarine by the Steve the Smug...)
Paint scheme idea: For the outriders you could do the legendary birds with 3 different small free-hands (one flames, one snowflakes, one lightning)!
I love how colorful it is
Noble team as a theme or the home nation colours of the UK! (Maybe even include Eire as its the only country we share a border with, excluding overseas territories)
You can do some Mario cart color schemes for the outriders
Nice tech marine, also like the white one kinda look like fire and ice
Link tunic Blade guard? Red, Green, blue with hints to the different swords and shields
The bikes would be so cool with a mario kart scheme
0:04 TOP DOLLAR!!
To continue the classic Nintendo references, for the outriders you could base their colours on Extreme-G for the N64
although that game is more on the obscure side
My chaos knights are all over the place in color scheme. 3of them are bought form some other person. I have a cerastis knight painted in a valentines color scheme, a rampager painted after sinanju from gundam, and a war dog painted in my 2 year college school colors
2:03 damn had to do this to us 😂
My successor chapter is the void ravens, black and dark purple with bright purple highlights and dark sulver trim. Purple eyes.
My chapter master rides on a giant raven, wish i could show it
Depending on how many bladeguard veterans you have, you could style them after the different coloured Links from Triforce Heroes.
Looks great dude! Now you have your Dark Eldar 😅
Paul you grew up in the 90's, there is only one option for your first outrider squad. Biker Mice From Mars
For the blade guard vets their secondary colors should be Peanut butter, jelly, and Nutella. Please put Jiffy on the peanut butter shoulder pad
This idea might work best on a lone character, but paint just one model or units as an ultramarines with the screaming raven’s symbol.
“Why is there just one ultramarine here! Where are the rest of them?!”
“Look, we needed the plot armor!”
One of the outrider squads should be based off of mario kart. It'll be even better if you ever add an atv to the unit
Very nice army, love vibrant color accents
You could paint a squad in the colours of characters from Mario Party?
Paint a character as Banjo Kazooie.
Diddy Kong racers for the bikes.
@@PaulIsBadAtStuff I remember that box. Are you finding your outriders are significantly better? I have found them much the same
16:14 get 30k MKVI assult squad instead, u get beaky helmets, aaand the kit is 10minis for the price of 5 40k assults. they still have the same shaped veapons. probably fit in better with your Screaming ravens imo :)
Ey' that was me! Good show!
Try sunlu toughness resin, it's a little more expensive, but it is more tough and has a rubbery quality to it. I like to use it on models with small bits.
Not sure what squad to do this with but get one of those darkest black paint and do a squad of that with only glowing eyes.
If you are into any sports you could paint a squad based off the team colours. The bikes could be based off the Biker Mice from Mars. Not sure if people remember that old show. But you said you liked the N64 so some Banjo Kazooie marines mayhaps?
Blade guard shield either being playing card’s suits OR the 1,2,4 number scheme as in (where is the third one ?)
I think the jump intercessions should be pirates. I don’t know why, I just want
One squad of Outriders as biker mice from mars
The rainbow ravens more like
Good stuff
18 seconds and only 2 views, bro fell off hard. JK, I love seeing your videos man
I was never on so I couldn't possibly fall off 🤔
@@PaulIsBadAtStuffPaul! How could you possibly say that? Your mere presence makes other 40K creators shake in their ceremite-reinforced boots!
@@PaulIsBadAtStuff SHUT IT PAUL WE LOVE YOU
@@PaulIsBadAtStuff I will tolerate no blatant lies during the holidays! Your videos have inspired me to keep painting and doing custom stuff.
A color idea for you if you want to use it feel free to. If you get a bladeguard unit, color them in the theme colors of sonic tails and knuckles.
Damn this is actually a great idea...if I get 6 I could have 3 as Team Dark as well...
Also a good theme for future outriders
Might have to have the outriders as that idea. This time if I do it I'll remember you suggested it lmao
He did it!
He can change his name to Paul is good at stuff!
Not quite. Paul is mediocre at stuff maybe? :P
@@PaulIsBadAtStuff That works too mate!
Love your stuff, makes me want to push myself to be a little better at painting
Suggestion for the Outriders. Mario kart, it lines up nicely with the "Classic Games" sub theme you have stumbled into and would allow the inclusion of a Invader ATV down the line if you felt like adding one.
If your looking for inspiration for the new units can't go wrong with either Mario or Sonic characters
It’s a small detail, but I really like the multicolored missiles on the gunship.
Edit: oh oops, those are guns!
honestly i give u a 7/8 out of 10, overall i actually like your painted minis.
Personally I think if you look into how others have made the outriders into hover bikes that would be a really interesting way to go with them. Don't know about the inspiration for colour schemes, maybe starwars space ships?
Specifically the conversion that I saw is the: Void Ravens Jetbike Thrusters by dicepunk Studios
I could see them being perfect for the Screaming Ravens
For your outriders why don't you do a scheme inspired by ancient empires, like, each model is inspired by romans, knights, samurai, ancient Mongolians. You can also do this for your bladegaurd
it took me 3 years to complete my army, i just finished building my last minis and i need another week to paint them lol
if you want to try something daring you could try to free hand the toa masks from bionicle for the jump squad
for the outriders maybe base them off of famous bike sin media Akira, Ghostrider, Easy Rider, Lobo are just a few off the top of my head
an idea someone else has said, which i think would be great, is that squad with the nerfgun like rocket launchers, but each left paldron has a number. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6
wheres number five you may ask?
the brutalis dreadnought right behind you.
Make the Judicier a Guts reference from Berserk. Also, Mad Max outriders?
