  • What to do, when your propane generator won't start. In a previous video, I showed a detailed review of the All Power America 6000 watt propane generator. Recently the generator would not start. After some troubleshooting, here is the fix. I suggest starting with the spark plug before investing in more expensive parts such as the regulator shown in the video.
    Hot plug replacement: BP6ES (gap reset to 0.02 - 0.025)

    Great video, thank you...! I have the Sportsman 7000LP which worked great for 2 yrs but then stopped with symptoms exactly as you described. I will try a hotter spark plug but knowing their customer service is ass I will try more research too...

      It took us a looooog while to figure out it was the spark plug for our generator. Hopefully, its a simple fix for you. :-)

    • @BuddyWhoDoesStuff
      @BuddyWhoDoesStuff  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Providing the generator is getting fuel and there is no "safety switch" (low oil) preventing it from starting, I would say try a hotter plug. Also sometimes when propane is cold it turn more into a liquid rather than a gas.

    Thanks for the video & ideas. Same issues, inconsistent starting, some rough running & quits under load. I will pull plug & go with Hotter NGK - see how that goes.
    Ours is a Duropwer ELP6000 (circa 2009) but looks EXACTLY like yours.
    I'm thinking the regulator being mounted directly on top of engine, subject to LOTS of heat - isn't the best plan for reliable operation ?! What do you think ?
    If my plug upgrade isn't a fix - my next step will be to pull the 'Purge Valve' regulator & see if I can source an adjustable spec regulator and mount on wall of Gen Shed - away from the heat.
    Love to hear any feedback you have - David in Ice Storm Damaged Texas

    I've had a JD propane generator for about 10-15 years. Recently one of the propane hoses connected to the regulator disintegrated. I have also found that it you turn on the propane too quickly it won't start. The first thing I did when I bought it was ditch the chinese spark plug and replaced it with an NGK.

    We have this generator that we purchased like six years ago and haven’t had to use it! Well we had a bad storm last night in Massachusetts! If I hold the Purge button down it stays on but cut off if I let it go!

      Sounds like you may need a new regulator. There may be a problem with the baffle inside.

    Good video! I just got a used Sportsman 7000LP generator. It doesn't have that regulator valve. Gas line goes through a shutoff straight to the carb. It runs with a shot of starter fluid (good spark) but no gas getting through carb.
    You know where I can find LP carb parts?

    • @BuddyWhoDoesStuff
      @BuddyWhoDoesStuff  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you go back to the supplier of the generator? That is what I did with this one, but later found it was the spark plug. They may have parts available. Did you try a hotter plug?

    • @RVBob
      @RVBob 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BuddyWhoDoesStuff yeah I went to them, they said they don't have that part in stock. I feel like they (Sportsman) just blew me off. Nobody carries propane carbs. Just those conversion kits.

    • @BuddyWhoDoesStuff
      @BuddyWhoDoesStuff  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RVBob That sucks. Might have to look for a used (broken) generator that you could use for parts.

      Engineers design everything with plastic so that it breaks and you have to spend money to repair

    Have you used a 100 lbs instead of the 20 lbs? I got the smaller version of the all power propane generator. I getting a adapter that convert it from inside thread to an outside thread.

    • @BuddyWhoDoesStuff
      @BuddyWhoDoesStuff  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not used a 100lb tank. I think I have read (some time ago) that some people have issues with the 100lb tank providing to much "pressure" for the generator and they have to buy a regulator to reduce the pressure. Give it a go and report back Jessie.

  • @tiberiud1955
    @tiberiud1955 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    so I don't need a regulator on the propane tank ? Direct pressure from tank to generator.

  • @gordonmckenzie2982
    @gordonmckenzie2982 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    So it stopped working. What changed? Regulator arm broken/fixed. Ok. But why was the spark now an issue if it work d before? What was different re the spark?

    • @BuddyWhoDoesStuff
      @BuddyWhoDoesStuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm really not sure why the spark just became an issue as it did work previously. When I got the "hotter" plug it worked again and still works.

    I have the same generator and it runs for 20-30 minutes then dies or sometimes almost dies then BK fires and takes off again and then 20 minutes later dies again. Didn't know if you think it's the regulator or what. It's never hard to start but if u open tank to fast it will not start.

    • @BuddyWhoDoesStuff
      @BuddyWhoDoesStuff  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I forgot to turn off the choke and mine acted in that that way. You are correct, turning the tank on to fast will cause starting problems.
