Thanks for watching. This Generac generator was sitting for a very long time, and now it won't start. This time, we tackle the Carb. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
for customers i put 1 qt of sef canned fuel in. for myself i remove the bolt on the carb and let it drain all the way for a few days so it all evaporates
I worked for a Generac dealer, and I can tell you that besides cleaning the carb, it's overdue for a valve adjustment (0.004") and a plug. You must set the valves with the piston down a half inch from TDC because it's got compression release. It's also got an oil filter I didn't see changed in the video. If your local parts store doesn't have a listing, you can substitute a Briggs and Stratton of similar size. Personally, after cleaning I'd spray the whole thing with WD-40 and wipe it down. It will retard general moisture from making it look like junk while sitting around. BTW, you can sneak that carb off without loosening the air shroud. Just flex the linkage a little. Same goes for that air cleaner housing. No need to pull that switch and wires. There's enough slack to just spin it down a bit and let it hang.

@@HomeGaragechannel ... one more tip I forgot about last night.... when you were adding a few drops of fuel to see if it would pop, that's when I plug in a drop light to check for output. If the light comes on when the engine fires at least you know it will do something after the work. I found about half the gen sets I did at the shop had no output and needed something expensive. That was often the deciding factor in going forward with engine repairs.... or buying a new set. I was doing enough units that it only took maybe 10 minutes to make up the list and call the customer for authorization. It was a small shop, but I was doing 20 - 30 units a week in busy season.
Such a help! Was trying to get my 8000 started and it wouldn't turn over. Tried squirting some fresh fuel in the carb like you did and boom it fired right up. My kid is sick and all I wanted was the heater on so he wouldn't get worse or get pneumonia. House is warm and the fridge is cold. Thanks for taking the time to make this video! God bless.

Storage depends on how often it is used. I live in a rural area where trees often take out power lines. Power goes off several times in the spring and summer storms (hours to days) and we CERTAINLY lose power in winter with snow and ice for days to weeks.
In my case, I get by with stabilized ethanol fuel (I also add a splash of high quality 2 stroke oil to every 5 gallon container intended on generator use (probably 300-400:1?) to keep the metal fuel tank rust free and to help coat both the carb and intake side of the motor. I keep at least 25 gallons of fuel on hand, stabilized, in tight sealing cans. I date them. I use the older cans in mowers (or toss it in our vehicles if it's more than 3 or 4 months old)
If we haven't had a storm in a couple months, I try to run the generator for a few minutes just to cycle through the carb and lines. I keep my tanks full.
If you MIGHT use your generator once or twice a year.. RUN IT DRY. My situation depends on using it several times per year, and when I do cycling through my fuel reserves and refreshing them.

Long term I have been getting great results with longevity with all my OPE doing this. The minor oil addition has also helped to keep carbon down and bring up compression on some older motors, including a wood splitter and a pressure washer that were worn slap out. I use either amsoil saber or echo Red Armor in my actual 2 stroke equipment which has GREAT lubricity and fantastic detergent packages. I go through about 5 gallons of chainsaw mix every 6-8 weeks so it's always at hand.
Anything that does not have a Kohler with hydraulic lifters gets rotella t6 in the crankcase.
All of my OPE is frequently used and I have had great results getting many many hours out of them this way.
You should try Marvel mystery oil along with the stabil.
I would take that part out of the video I'm a mechanic who owns farm land and lives in rural area like you that air filter will automatically make anyone who understands engines think well that looks like original filter and oil was neglected not saying you did but the air filter is what keeps the engine oil clean that carburetor was pulling dirt for long time killing the oil if you buy a new one do not use car oil use true small engine oil like synthetic Amsoil, Generac or Briggs and Stratton they have the required zinc and phosphorus levels needed car oil does not have the additives required for continuous sustained running cooled by air Kohler also has good oil I use Amsoil or Generac in my stuff I'm on second NG Generac stand by I replaced the old one it was 20 years old I wanted the 14kw with the 816cc engine because it requires no valve adjustment has hydraulic lifters and its 14kw on LP and NG my other one was the 1.0L 12kw LP 11kw on NG the 816cc engine so smooth
I usually run them dry, sometimes I might add a small amount of 2 cycle fuel and run it dry so as to coat the carb parts. The black fines in the carb bowl are probably from the fuel hose going bad and the fines sluff off of an old hose. Thanks for the video.

Generators sit 95% of the time.
With my propane generator I just shut off the valve at the tank and let it run out. My gas generator I also run out the gas unless it is hurricane season and then just start once a month. However. right now I think I have a bad low oil sensor. Time to try to repair it. Great video and hope you get the generator you want. Give a look at your new one. Thanks for the videos.

I added a 'T' in the gas line with another stut off valve so I can drain the tank with no bother as far as a siphon hose or taking lines loose. The other oine had just a 5-gallon container for a tank so just remove the hose and run it dry. Both are run dry and electric start. The 5K has the battery on a maintainer and the 2.5 has a set of jumper cables to jump off the 5K. The 5K has no bosses to add a factory battery charging system so I plug the maintainer into the genset itself while running. They both have pull starts to use in a pinch. The 5K is a Briggs I/C 10 horse flat head and the 2.5 is an old cast iron Onan 4-pole. Thanks and Blessings.

If you buy one from pawn shop. Drain the old gas and clean the float bowl and carburator w carburetor cleaner. At pawnshop they don't drain the fuel so the fuel gets stale when the generator sits there for months before dead pawn. Same thing with chainsaws.

The Predator 3500 is a Harbor Freight product. It is currently $929 which is less than anywhere else. Keep in mind that it is Chinese made including the engine. It is supposed to be quieter but I imagine that one you have will be easier to service with much better parts availability. If the noise bothers you, I would adapt a better muffler and keep what I have.

Great video, I have a vintage generator from the 70s, it may be old but it runs and works great. I store it dry with no fuel in it whatsoever so it will start right up should I need it in an emergency.

BTW, your video on Husqvarna was excellent and informative (I wasn't able to start it) but after 2 or 3 days checking and disassembling everything that's physically possible to disassemble, I realized that I was starting it the wrong way. I laughed. Then I cried. Then I laughed again. And then it started from one pull. Instructions were literally printed on the top part of the thing. 😂
I've been interested in getting a generator for myself (never used or touched any) for cases of potential power outages. Could you recommend any particular models that are easy to maintain? I'll mostly use it for simple things like lights and charge phone and laptop in the case of loug outage.

thanks I appreciate that. So you're only criteria is easy of maintenance? Then you're good to get any brand you want. See, it's not the difficultly of maintenance that get's people, is the willingness to do it. All require an initial oil change, all need good fuel, and all need to be ran, on some sort of schedule, that's it, As for me, I'd get a predator or a honda.

Yep, the generator wil probably be used once per month or even less. The idea is it shouldn't be overengineered but still reliable and have a robust engine (meaning it wouldn't fall apart after 2-5 hours of continuous use).

I got a 4 stroke leaf blower I found that's a Troybilt and it was used less then 5 times for clean up and left in storage and now pumps oil out the exhaust.

At the beginning of hurricane season I had an outage and ran mine for a couple of hours with no issue. I shut it off and when I tried to restart it I got nothing. Replaced the spark plug, carb, fuel lines and air filter. Still nothing. Sprayed ether into the carb and got no fire even though the plug was producing spark. No fuel was getting into the combustion chamber. I removed the valve cover and found the intake valve push rod fell out. The valve had stuck open just long enough to cause it to drop the rod. Lubed the valve guides, reassembled, set the lash and it's good as new.

I have the 7500 version. Last summer I had to drain the carb to clean out all the old fuel. Then it ran fine. Even one period where it ran for nearly four days.

I've seen all kinds of suggestions over the spectrum such as to use a specialized carburetor cleaner that also has a rubber protectant in it that you inject into the carburetor before leaving it empty and also I've seen where people will put a tiny little bit of oil in suck it through the carburetor so that way everything is lubricated before sitting. Especially with the chainsaw type engines pulling it through the plastic fuel lines keeps them from cracking and not drying out. So when you run it dry would you also drain the bowl in the carburetor or does that little bit not matter?
wow, I would definitely pick a way, and go with it, and you've offered a few interesting ways. I don't drain the bowl, I only run it dry. The half oz, in the bowl will evaporate, without issue
I leave fuel in mine with stabilizer and I run it twice a month 30 minutes each time I’ve been doing this since 2014 and never had a problem and I have a cheap Chinese generator it is a predator 8750 peak 7000 continuous watt with the 420 predator motor runs excellent

Running dry isn’t enough, have to drain the carb with the drain bolt after running dry. Old gas turns to thick honey and clogs the float and tiny holes. I learned this lesson the hard way, took me 4 hours to clean much of it spent looking for something small like a toothpick to clear the holes.

well for me if i had one well it would depend upon how often it gets a running workout and if it,s used frequently well Fuel Stabilizer and if it,s not ran all that often well running it dry would often be a ideal solution varying on how much fuel is in the fuel tank etc.

Loving you channel and wanting to do something myself, I bought a second hand oleo mac 956 (Emak manufacturer, efco156 is the same) I started the chainsaw a couple of times but the pull cord is very hard to pull, so hard that I broke the starter cover, so I'll have to buy a new one. When I remove the spark plug, the pull is smooth. There is no decompression valve on the engine. The carburator is from Walbro HDA 146. What I can see is that there is a tube coming from the engine, i'd say positioned under the piston and it goes to the carb. I unscrewed that cover where the line goes in. I see the diaphragm with the 2 valves. They aren't flush, they are bent upwards, so not covering the hole. Might this be the problem for the compression being so hard?

Keep in mind alot if generators have oil sensors that go bad so if you ever come across one that has no spark, disconnect the oil sensor wire and test for spark again

I use mostly ethanol gas in my generator because of the price. But after I use my generator I drain the tank and run it out of gas put a very small amount of non ethanol gas in it to act like a flush and run it out of gas again. Fog or little bit of oil in the cylinder and store it dry till I need it again. If I haven’t used it in a while 6months or so I’ll put a small Amount of non ethanol gas and run it dry again just to give it a work out.

I did maintenance on my cub cadet ss418 by tightening my valves due to its a 4 stroke when it was tighten after when I went to start it the compression was lost can I have some help I tried to take apart the engine I stripped 4 bolts

depending on what kind of generator it is, there could be an problem with the voltage regulator or, another electric component .
Do you think you could do a video on testing a magneto? My generator died over night and I can't figure out if it's the magneto or something else

You really should try and recommend alkylate gasoline to everyone! It has a shelf life of up to 3 years compared to regular gas.

combustion needs to be a balance of enough air to match the fuel available, too much is going to stop combustion.

The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!

I have a generac generator 4000xl. Model# 09777-1 . I need the valve spring retainer. . can't find any . They do however sell a valve kit . I don't really want to take the head off ,buy the kit $40 plus I would have to buy the lapping tool, lapping paste,spring compressor, not to mention the work that has to be done . When all I need is the $3 retainer. Hopefully I can find an alternative to the kit. I'm about to try making a retainer with washers

When you do a oil change you warmed up the engine
yes it's recommend to get the oil warm when doing an oil change, otherwise, the oil is very thick, especially when it's cold outside.

I feel people should know that these kinds of generators - most all of them recommend changing oil every twenty hours of use. Multiple day power outage?… you should be changing that oil every day 😮. Oi -
I was able to accomplish this by having a tin pan l, cheap wrench for the oil plug, and oil stored WITH the generator. Otherwise honestly I would have just thrown more gas thinking I would do on the next fill up.

Use synthetic oil for much longer engine oil changes.
@@watermanone7567 I looked into just that and for these engines they use a rod that flicks the oil and the oil cavitates. And the synthetic breaks down faster in these motors.
Edit - just googled. Does not break down but Specifically synthetic can foam in the crank case from the steady rod hot and it stops the oil from spraying everywhere needed. So i guess if turned off for some hours. Not sure.
