  • The propane generator on a 1997 motorhome runs great until a load is put on it. Then, it sputters and runs out of fuel. Really need air conditioning running .... www.fmca.com

It's out of warranty so I'm trying to figure this out

+Todd Grevious Todd I think I solved the problem when you run your dash air the water it creates drips on the generator causes something in the generator to ground shutting it down you have to divert the dripping away from generator I built a little sheet metal gutter the plastic container the water drips from is located runner the hood run your dash air with hood open you will see the drip I just made a trip from Massachusetts to Lancaster Pennsylvania generator never shut off 7 hours running try it see if it works for you let me know

I think Mike could be on the right track. It could be moisture causing the board to malfunction. Other than an electrical issue, there could also be a problem with the fuel source, such as the amount of butane/propane in the container. LP generators normally require grade HD-5 vapor and the mixture needs to be at least 90% propane. If you have a higher mixture of butane, (less than 90% propane), the fuel might not be vaporizing properly. Moisture in the ASME tank can also cause erratic operation. Also, have a tech measure the fuel delivery pressure at the generator.
I'm guessing it's a fuel issue or a circuit board issue. Wish I could take some measurements and run some tests for you. Is there a certified RV service tech in your area? Gary

Thanks to both of you. I will look at both possibilities you mentioned and let you know results. One problem I have is I just filled tank so it will be a bit before I can try different propane. I'm in southern Minnesota near Faribault area. Where are you, Gary?
