Why I moved to Shenzhen, China

  • First Tier? Third Tier? Why is Shenzhen in my opinion the best city in China? Especially since I've been all over China and seen all of the biggest and best, as well as the rural and the small cities and towns, well here are the definitive reasons as to why I still think that Shenzhen is the best city China has to offer.

    In the 3rd tier cities, the people are so much more laid back and chill. Stuff is cheaper. Locals are more friendly and genuine. If some guy comes up to you in a 3rd tier city, they're probably just curious about you and want to see what's up with you up close. Unless maybe a KTV...haha.
    Whereas in 1st tier cities, people are more rushed, arrogant, and usually have some agenda. When someone comes up to you, they want something from you. Usually, to buy some real estate, join some membership, or invest in some ponzi scheme. The worst is when you get approached by some pompous guy in a suit and camera filming you to STAY AWESOME.

      Not always, 3rd 4th tier cities that have a lot of factories are money centered. And the people might be nationalistic and seriously annoying and harassing.

      Wei Zhang - Apples to apples. I'm talking about big cities with large populations vs smaller cities, not one part of a country with another part. You can argue Chicago to be comparable to NYC. Also you can compare Bloomington, IL with Albany, NY. But you can't say NYC and Albany are in the same tier even tho they're in the same state. Same contrast as Shenzhen vs. Huizhou in Guangdong.

If you want to see the current China, go to Shanghai. If you want to see the future China, please go to Shenzhen". And in my opinion, if you want to see the China's future of future, please go to Ningbo, Dalian, Guiyang..etc.. those thriving cities with a complete new infrastructures buildup from scratch.

      " How&Why can we Chinese achieve a complete infrastructure reconstruction so fast? Besides the readiness of technology, manpower and money, We don't not need to go through an unnecessary, arduous overhead of national or congrass debate to prove it or how to implement it. Moreover all land is the property of the nation. There is no such thing in China someone can own a piece of private land. So, the nation is the solo landlord has the upper hand right to terminate the lease." ---- Dr Aaron, July 14. 2017.

      RoyalDomi come on... that is not our communism spirit, you knew that. Mr Deng, Xiaoping explained 40 years ago, the strategy of how to make China a develped country .. Basically , “Let some people, some areas with good geographic advance get rich first, then redistribute the wealth in the form of new investment to help the rest relative poorer areas to get rich too. ” This strategy is totally working now. Again, I have to mention the 'maximum flow' greedy algorithm as CMILK knew very well since his first year colleage computer science algoritm class... It is how it worked and works and most suited watpy for a rapid developing country ...

    Before I visited Shanghai, my friends kept telling me I didn't need to learn any Chinese because everyone spoke English. I'm glad I didn't listen because it turned out that most people didn't speak it or if they did, it was usually about as good as my Chinese. I was happy to get a lot of practice using my five months worth of language lessons. I also ended up traveling by bus a couple times. Fortunately taking pictures of the schedule and just watching the signs until I saw the characters for my stop made it easy to navigate (or just using Maps and waiting until the GPS showed that I was at my destination). My favorite part of the trip was traveling to Hengdian World Studios by myself. Only one person I met spoke a little bit of English, but I still managed to travel from Shanghai to Hengdian, get a hotel room and tickets for the studio. It was the best part of my trip. Can't wait to go back next year. (And hopefully my Chinese will be a lot better by then.)

      Can you give a comparative in the costs, please? I'm also curious about the relative costs of living versus the wages that one can expect to make. Sometimes the wages make up for the higher costs, making Life in one location far better than another. If a rent is very low in another place, but the wages are far less in comparison deciding in one place to visit or to live for a long or short term could be the wisest factor in one's choice.

    • @Hyderomastgroningem0
      @Hyderomastgroningem0 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      2nd tier cities are just the middle ground between them, reasonably developed cities with some amount of international influence but less so than the 1st tier cities. Most of them are way smaller too, for example Xiamen only has 3 million people

    • @Elurin
      @Elurin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Are "just"?! 2nd tier cities are the best of both worlds. You get very well developed central city areas and all the rural hominess of the villages on the outskirts/suburbs. Chengdu, at 14 million is a nice large sized city with soon to be 5 subway lines, and all the amenities that you could want, not to mention the Best Food in China! Chengdu is probably the best city in China, BY FAR. Shenzhen doesn't come close!

      @daniellxia 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Shenzhen is probably like the American, looks posh but no culture. Maybe feels comfi for westerners, but doesn't have the Chinese flavour. I would prefer Shanghai over Shenzhen. As for the 2nd tier cities, you might want to consider Hangzhou, Suzhou, Chengdu, or Xiamen. Those are cities well developed, yet still have lots of traditions, and a relaxed life style comparing with 1st tier city.

    I suspect Prozzie's vocabulary might be bijou-fueled (or, at least enhanced).
    I was also curious what the criteria is for the tier system is. How would to rate the cities in the US you've been to? I suspect for cleanliness/risk, some of the deepest, darkest southern US cities could give lower tier Chinese cities a run for their money.

    • @stonechen2480
      @stonechen2480 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure about the exact criteria, but the tier number for each city is actually given by the central government, I think it's a method helping to measure how the resources should be allocated. Generally speaking, population is a good bet, but definitely not the only measurement.

    • @andreasblack7511
      @andreasblack7511 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, okay, so I'm actually seeing it the wrong way around? It's not, "This city has managed to grow enough to be considered a tier 3 city", but rather, "We'll allocate the resources to this city in order to make it a tier 3 city?

      MihaiRUdeRO I actually don't mind the higher taxrate as long as I can benefit from it, which I do daily. Such a small portion on my tax money actually goes to universities, way more is used for lower levels of education and healthcare services. Why should it bother me what someone else wants to study? You should google Finland sometime, it's not too shit of a place.

    I prefer living in a third tier city because English isn't most places so it forces you to learn Chinese & makes it easier to improve because you have to. Also I find shanghai & other first tier cities a little impersonal.

    • @pgai824
      @pgai824 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I lived in China for many years and mainly lived in 3rd tier cities. But I went there looking to learn the language/culture and didn't care much about the western features. I lived in Jinan, Wenzhou, Weihai and Rizhao

    • @AlexAbsolute
      @AlexAbsolute 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can't comment for three of the four, but Wenzhou is a wealthy coastal city with an extensive and interesting history. The local dialect here is one of the hardest to learn in China & as a result all of the secret service operatives in ww2 were from here. So the Japanese couldn't get the jist of what they were planning.

    I don't think Shenzhen is a showcase of China...Shanghai and Beijing are more like a showcase. Actually, comparing to the former cities, Shenzhen is not focused on international image, it focuses on itself. It is an economic special zone. In another word, capitalism zone, it developed by the good location near to HongKong. Shenzhen is so regular and modern is because it has to keep its development, not for face.

    How about a video on martial arts in China? In the west, Chinese are always portrayed as knowing Karate, Kung Fu or something. So what's the truth? Does every other Chinese person know karate? Is everyone in China always Kung Fu fighting?

    • @GreyException
      @GreyException 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The truth is is that the "truth" is exaggerated and painted with a different picture than the actual situation.
      Yes, a lot of people know martial arts because they have to defend themselves and they aren't in the position of owning firearms so being capable of physical self-defense is still effective.
      It's like asking, "Does every American shoot/own guns? Is everyone in Amurrica always shooting & tooting?"

      I know many people out west that are barely on the edges of first tier; that easily pay in excess of two thousand per month for a place that is in grave need of considerable repairs.
      Take a look at the rental prices or prices for homes throughout the San Francisco region. If there were mobile homes in the county surrounding SF; they cold easily charge 2k++ a month for a small mobile home

    I dont think it 100% correct of the tier system by your understanding.
    Shenzhen is not even a direct-controlled municipality, but it was the 1st Special Economic Zone which the Chinese government built in 1980 from scratch (almost).It is very close to Hongkong (colony of UK for 150 years), this is the only reason. It holds sub-provincial administrative status means the political power is less than a province. The easieat way to explain, Shenzhen is the Wall street of China, good salary, expensive to live, extremely convenient for almost everything, but no history. I may choose Nanjing over Shenzhen, it has a prominent place in Chinese history and culture, having served as the capital of various Chinese dynasties, kingdoms and republican governments dating from the 3rd century CE to 1949 ( copy from Wikipedia) and it does better GPD growth than Shenzhen in the past few years.
    Why you moved to Shenzhen? Maybe because of your wife? haha

    • @timothyconstantine3791
      @timothyconstantine3791 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haiyang S LOL Shenzhen is much better than Nanjing in economic wise considering the much lager GDP in total. Only reason Nanjing's higher GDP growth is because it has a lower GDP, just like the US and China. Cultural wise, come on, who actually cares about the culture anymore, if a person who wants to experience the old culture, he/she can always fly to Beijing, Xi'an, or Nanjing. There are too many old cities in China, which means that there are tons of options. Nanjing doesn't stand out from them lol

    I got news for you fellas----I've gotten throwing-up sick in Shanghai so many times over the years, and my other expat friends have suffered similarly. It doesn't matter how nice the place looks. Cleanliness standards can still be low in tier one cities, and it happens quite often at Western-style restaurants staffed by workers who don't quite get how to safely prepare and preserve that kind of food. As for those smiley faced safety rating stickers, they are commonly paid for under the table in Shanghai, too.
