    Koreans do the same thing. My students are always talking about some European or American vacation they went on and then they start talking about various incidents they had with “외국인,” aka “foreigner”; I always correct them to describe the people as “locals” and remind them that when they’re on vacation abroad, THEY’RE the foreigner!

    • @team3gaming749
      @team3gaming749 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Jonathan Fowler I’m glad to hear you correct them. I don’t understand why people do that. Why not just call them by their nationality?

    • @bigdaddychacha
      @bigdaddychacha 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Team3Gaming I can understand it, Korea’s a bit of an insular place, and when you’re inside Korea, everybody from outside is just a foreigner; it really is only a problem once you’ve left the peninsula; at that point, they need to find some new vocabulary! (They have words for people from every country, but usually what happens is they end up calling Brits and Canadians Americans, which obviously upsets those nationalities, so in some ways, domestically, “foreigner” is safer.

      @Donnie Darko It's barbaric to call someone a "foreigner" based on race. I totally agree with anyone in this thread who have expressed these sentiments.

    • @HerezCheez
      @HerezCheez 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jonathan Fowler
      With all due respect, there is a lost in translation and nuance when you simply equate "foreigner" and "외국인".
      "Foreigner" has more international-level context (thus you can't call locals foreigners when you are in their country)
      and "외국인" has more national-level context which de facto morphed into the meaning "non korean" (Its not wrong to call locals non Korean, non America, etc even when you are in their country)
      This is analogous how Americans are technically "immigrants" in broad context but is "citizen" in American context.
      I understand you frustration, and it has to do with the intricacy of the language and context than imperialistic mentality of people thinking any foreign country is theirs.

    If you immigrate to a foreign country, you better plan on assimilating and knowing the customs like you have wonderfully done. You’re more of a Chinese than a Chinese American or other foreign born and raised Chinese. And in my opinion, the Chinese shouldn’t be really calling non-chinese in America “foreigners” especially if they’re the foreigner themselves. Look, they immigrated here for a reason and if they can’t see a person regardless of ancestry as another fellow countryman in your new country then why even bother moving here?

    3 minutes in and I chuckled. I used to live and work in Germany in my teens (Dad was in the British army stationed over thre and Mum was German born) So I spoke fluent German. I used to work in a bar and British soldiers and staff from the forces shop (N.A.A.F.I) came in. One night, the manager of the forces shop came in and was talking about me saying "cor I'd like to XXX her" and "these German girls are pretty" and other stuff. I listened as I stood polishing glasses and made no comment. Then as my shift came to an end, I put on my coat, popped my head into the bar and said in English "You know, you really shouldn't say things like that because you don't know whether us girls can understand you". He went bright red. So just to rub it in I said " I'm in your shop every week and Dad gives me a lift home with the shopping when he's finished work at the M.T. (motor transport) section on camp." At which point he put his hands over his face and kept saying sorry. That was 45 years ago. I laughed all the way home and the thought still makes me cackle. Speaking another language is fun if people don't realise that you can understand what they're saying.

    I know how Winston took it but I wouldn't get too upset about the terms given the context as there's literally no word for Caucasian in the language. If anything, calling you a white person in Chinese sounds racist. Calling a Caucasian a foreigner is a direct translation but it's the equivalent of calling somebody an ''Asian person over there'' rather than ''that American person over there''.

I can stomach the laowai comments in China but when I hear it said over here, I have to challenge that! Zhe li shi ni men waiguo ren!

However, many white people do not try and engage with ethnic Chinese people on a personal level and consider them to be robotic and indistinguishable " they all look the same to me" is a frequent comment made by Whites upon Chinese. Because Asians living in Western countries are perceived to be hard-working, reserved and non-threatening their presence is invisible to many Whites.

Obviously assimilation and migration are such contentious issues that we can't really discuss it well in YT comments though.

    Winston, you are at my neighborhood, I lived in this area for 30 years, by looking at the background I can tell exactly where you are, the old Honk Kong Supermarket, I wish I were in California to meet you guys, unfortunately I am in Michigan now watching my grand kids.

    They never update their point of reference, I worked with these Chinese in Cambodia, between them, when they produce locally (本地生產), source locally, they meant China.

    Been a fan of this channel because I grew up in Rowland Heights. I immediately recognized the Hong Kong plaza in this video. Glad to see you guys came all the way here. Fun fact: I've seen Rowland Heights as advertised as the place to move in many Chinese magazines.

    PLEASE, next visit to the US check out The Habit.... I like it better even than In-N-Out! Another place to try is Fuddruckers but they are harder to find. You get you hamburger "nude" and then you go decorate it to your heart's content at the toppings bar. Both have great chocolate shakes!
