Chinese Brands that DON'T SUCK!

  • "Made in China" usually means that it's not going to last or that the build quality can be expected to be sub-par or poor. However there are companies in China that are starting to break that stereotype! Come with me to China's Silicon Valley and see some of China's home-grown brands that are shaking off the image that "Made in China" means "Junk".
    Huaqiangbei (Chinese: 华强北; pinyin: Huáqiángběi; literally: "Huaqiang North") is an area and subdistrict of Futian, Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China. The area's status as a major electronics manufacturing hub, and sprawling electronics marketplaces have earned it (and Shenzhen) occidental nicknames such as "China's Silicon Valley", and the "Silicon Valley of Hardware".
    The subdistrict runs from Shennan Road at SEG Plaza near Huaqiang Road Station of the Shenzhen Metro for 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) north to the Pavilion Hotel. It is at the spine of a shopping district, with cross streets Zhenzhong Road (振中路), Zhenhua Road (振华路) and Zhenxing Road (振兴路). Huafa Road (华发路) is immediately parallel to the east with Yannan Road (燕南路) further away. The central area of the district is along Huaqiang Road (华强路), a busy pedestrian street which the district is named after.
    The area is characterized by tree-lined streets with wide (5 to 20 metres (16 to 66 ft)) footpaths. Huaqiangbei is famous for its variety of electronics and clothing shops, though it has a notorious history of selling counterfeit and smuggled goods

  • @Teekles
    @Teekles 6 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    I record professionally and I have a recommendation if you'd like. Every camera you showed is optimized for still images and they are all good cameras. You're getting all sorts of capabilities with what you have: low-light, color corrections, macro shots, etc. The fact they take videos is almost an accessory, not their main purpose. For your videos these feature aren't all that necessary and the stabilization is your biggest concern. I'd recommend using a camcorder, which is much better designed to be held steady while moving. The stabilization features you will find in modern camcorders will blow you away, and for very reasonable prices. I recommend to everyone the canon vixia line. From my experience, it's much more convenient than using a camera optimized for still images in addition to a gimbal; in terms of weight, comfort, and video quality. Even the hand strap is a blessing, I think it would benefit you tremendously.

    It is Chinese brands that have the connotation of low quality, not Made-in-China products. Basically, China is making literally everything for the entire world, and the quality of products all depends on how much money you are willing to pay. You pay one dollar, you got dollar-tree quality. you pay 900 dollars, you got an iPhone 7 plus. My suggestion is, go looking for Chinese equivalent brands that price at 0.5x-0.8x of western brands (very likely still made in China), and they will be really good bargain.
    In terms of promoting local brands, China is still far behind, coz it is related to creativity and innovation and things like that. However, if we are talking about have things PRODUCED, China can massively produce state-of-the-art industrial goods as you are willing to pay for it.

      the quality control in china is not as good. You can get the same product made by the same company in China and the US one will have better quality control...they did a video just about this very thing.

      It depends on the factory. Some factories are western run and have quality control because it has to meet international standard. Other factories just make whatever with no quality or low control. That's the big difference. It's all made in china and some same products can range in quality based of factory made.

    • @noyfbnoyfb8476
      @noyfbnoyfb8476 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      So true. It's not where it's made so much as who makes it and what quality standard they hold their products to. Reputable brands are going to insist on quality regardless of where they located their production.

    Hi Winston, I have been quietly viewing your vids for a couple of years. I'm an Aussie who has been making short trips across China for the past ten years with my Aussie wife. Everything you have said in all your vids is completely consistent with our own experiences. We have zig-zagged across the country from Harbin to Sanya, Tibet to Qingdao. We have made many friends, stayed in small villages and big cities. Met the old geezers and the near universally friendly younger generation. All that you say about baijiu drinking, dominating hosts, friendly hosts and pre-programmed hatred of Japan are all true. I have been trying to learn the language, but after 2-300 words, mostly suck at it. (my fault- not theirs). Your videos are slowly filling in the gaps of a vast jigsaw of a Chinese culture and it's all spot on. One topic you have not spent time on is how they regard Westerners (or at least Australians). They can't figure out how one person can do so much different, diverse stuff when we regard it as normal. To be able to write software, rebuild an engine, compose a poem, design a circuit or build a house. I regard these are just normal tasks, but it always surprises them somehow. Many university graduates are too frightened to change a light bulb. Sadly the biggest gap I see in China is limited imagination remaining after formal education. I observe very few who seem able to visualize anything they have not already seen in the past. A fertile topic. Keep up the good work! Haojile!

      Xiaomi is a brand that united a group of new generation Chinese factories which are quite different from old Chinese factories and really focused on design and quality with decent price

I took it to 3 shops, and they ALL said, "You should always ask repair companies what the best products are. The Lenovos, and the yoga 2 pro, are the ones we see the most of." They have constant issues. Unfixable issues. If I would had known better I would had pursued it more aggressively and sent it back under my state's lemon law. Japan's ibanez guitar were supeeer good the 80's model one but just that it is not we'll known and design is a fender knock off but the sound is supeeer different... And look at tama drums... People say they get better sounding drum kit in a cheaper price than ludwig at that time... This is why Japanese product get famous because of their quality... If their quality are also suck... @pr0xZen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      4k60 if possible, but for quality filmed video footage, 60 fps does little. For animations, screen grabs, streamed gameplay etc, that's a whole different story, as you haven't recorded footage of something in motion, but you're basically simulating motion with a fast slideshow of generated still images.
      Indo get why many get on the 4k band wagon for TH-cam though. In a 2-3 years from now, its not unreasonable to expect upwards of 50% newly manufactured consumer screens and monitors, to be 4k. And continue to progress that direction. But look at your TH-cam view history. Did you _only_ watch 1 year old content or newer, last month? Of course not. But watching videos recorded and encoded in older, low res (eg. 480p) videos today, does feel a bit lackluster. By comparison, high res recording equipment, is relatively affordable today.

    If you're into audio/video, you probably know that OPPO makes some of the best DVD/BD players. Keep in mind though that the R&D of OPPO players are done in the US.
    Stentor is one of the most well-known and popular violin brands on the market, due to their range of high quality and long lasting instruments. Surprising uh? Who would have thought the Chinese would master the production of an European instrument.
    Anker is a manufacturer of electronic accessories and their products seem to be well constructed. If you go on Amazon and look at the review ratings, they're excellent.
    The Chinese are capable of making quality products if they decide to do so. Give them time and eventually their brands reputation will be at the same level as Korea's or maybe even Japan's but that will take awhile.

    China is always making top quality products. The question is whether you would like to pay the price. If you buy cheap Chinese made craps in the west and get pissed, keep it in mind that it's not China's intention to make these craps but YOUR people want China to make really cheap products so that they can make profit. If you double the price you pay (which is sometimes still cheaper than your local products) China is very willing to make products that meet your standard. Now the question becomes can you afford your life then?

    I appreciate this video. Have had DJI MavicPro for 1.5 years, no problems, great shots. Even fell into a 9 foot deep pool once a year ago (got too close to water), I dried it out for a week, and it still worked. Still works. Indispensable tool for great stabilized shots. Its gimble makes it all look very smooth and professional. The Sony 4K Handycam takes great shots and more or less makes it easy automatic. That coupled with Sony 4K A6500 on the Zhiyun Crane works great in getting Multicam. These recommendations by Serpentza are spot on. I have had no problems with these tools, and the cost was doable.

Eventually I will have to go with the flow, unfortunately. I am not against progress. I was one of the first mobile Phone users back in the eighties. But there are two new things I refuse up to now. I don't need Siri or Brixby and when you buy a Samsung/Apple phone some of the money you pay for the phone is related to these services. I am glad Huawei can deliver an alternative for people who want a great phone but don't need certain features that are designed to only really work in the US/UK. This is coming from someone who has been using Samsung phones for the last 10 years.

      WRONG... and by the way, many American products suck... most Chinese product suck (percentages man!), some Japanese products suck... now "cost=quality" is a cheap argument as well... quality is the perceived satisfaction towards ones needs. MOST people seem to not be satisfied regarding Chinese quality... so, in fact, said brands suck. Big time in my opinion (but this is only my opinion).
      Just so you know (and this is a fact not an opinion) craftsmanship in Japan was and is still is one of the highest worldwide, since way before the industrial revolution. And as a very recent example, I had the chance to compare products of the same brand (European, not Chinese) produced by both Japan and China (and other countries in fact) and Japan still came on top. And I mean comparable products (in cost as well, exactly the same brand after all), and although the Chinese made was not bad in itself, was the weakest by comparison, Japanese being the finest. In turn this translates to "home-brewed brands".
      Now, this is not prejudice, china might be getting better, but still not there yet, sorry...

    7:35 _"It overheats all the time."_
    On-the-fly Image stablization requires a lot of extra processing power. Some companies don't think about that during the design process. They only pick the cheapest mass-produced CPU they can get away with that will drive the device's basic features. So your camera's CPU is likely running at about 95% capacity already, just to support the basic features. It's like putting a motorcycle engine in a Cadillac chassis.
    You see this in cheap, flat-screen TVs, too, where it takes several seconds to switch the TV between channels. And if the TV says it plays "media" off a USB stick, that WON'T include video playback (because the CPU is too slow to do full-screen playback)

    But to add to Xiao mi, Oppo for consumer electronics developed and produced in China. In addition, Apple still makes all of their iPhones in China so is "Made in China" really all that bad? I think it has more to do with internal QC and Management. If they want to build great products they can if the company culture is to put out crap, forget about it.

      I think the whole point of the video (and Winston straight out says it a couple times) is that of course China can make world class products - after all, they make a large percentage of the world's manufactured goods. It's just that Chinese businesses tend to not to want to.
      I think it's a good thing that more domestic companies are realizing that having good quality, aftermarket support, etc will build brand equity/loyalty and allow for higher margin products, and increase their bottom line in the long term, but it's a slow process since they have to rehabilitate consumer habits and expectations both domestically and around the world.

    Let's do something to help each other out: compile a list of Chinese companies and brands that people have personally used and found to be of at least good to excellent quality overall when compared to traditional, Western competitors.
    Let's actually be productive and positive on youtube for a change. :) Hopefully we can support the Chinese firms that are doing things right. Reward good products with our wallets.
    - 1MORE [headphone company, Shenzhen]: this company is killing it. Absolutely incredible value and sound and build quality for the money, hitting well above their weight. And they even have one of the best IEM unboxing experiences I have ever had, at almost any price range and I am an extensive IEM user. Best deal IMO are their triple driver IEMs;
    - ORICO: HK-based computer accessories company...high quality USB hubs, etc...have not let me down yet over the last few years; Not TRULY a China company, but "one country, two systems" yadda yadda yadda....
    - TONE CITY / MOOER / JOYO: For musicians out there [guitar pedals mostly], these three Chinese companies are in many ways clones of each other and they are all in turn clone attempts at some of the most recognizable pedal names and sounds in history. Quality in terms of tone varies from pedal type to type, as does consistency of build quality. But in terms of sheer bang for the buck, really hard to argue against these three companies. Worth at least a look and listen IMO;
    - LENOVO: Enough said, though I have some residual trust issues with them after the whole spyware/malware thing. Hopefully they have learned their lesson not to fuck around with people;
    - XIAOMI, HUAWEI, OPPO, LeECO, ONEPLUS: All 5 of these smartphone brands are legitimate contenders to the Apple/Samsung/LG thrones. Especially Xiaomi, Huawei and OnePlus as they are working onto the international market - they have no choice but to be at least on par with the current giants if they want to have any chance at all. Time will tell.
    That's all I got off the top of my head right now...I hope folks here will jump in with their own lists.
    Yes, IMO, the overwhelming majority of Chinese made/branded products are indeed still garbage in Q2 2017, with the percentage of top tier, global quality Chinese brands being very very low overall. For China's sake, that ratio needs to improve...quickly. Meantime, there are indeed Chinese companies that know how to do things right - and they should be supported.
    cheers!

    You are so spot-on about some Chinese products being fantastic. Please allow me to give an example...
    I have a small recording studio in my apartment here in Xi'an that I euphemistically have named "Studio PM2.5". I was looking around for a quality set of closed-back monitoring over-the-ear headphones for use while actually recording audio in my studio. (I won't go into why "closed back" headphones are better for the actual recording process... which is different from what you would want for the "editing and mixing process".)
    So not to digress, I did some shopping around and found many "name brand" headphones for the US equivalent of $200 (minimum). Along the way, I spotted a Chinese model "ISK HP-960B" for only 100 RMB ($16 / €13).
    (You can search Taobao for that model number if interested... but I am NOT here to sell headphones.)
    I was skeptical because 1) They are strictly a Chinese brand and 2) At that price I didn't think they could be anything but a joke.
    As it turned out, I was very pleasantly shocked at the quality of these headphones.... "Amazed" would be more like it. They are comfortable, sound wonderful, versatile, and have an extremely "solid build quality".
    I liked them so much, in fact, that I immediately sent for a second set so that two people could record in my studio at the same time.
    Just for the record, I would not recommend "closed-back headphones" for "listening to music" because that design does not let the music "open up". They are a necessary evil while recording, however, to prevent "headphone bleed" when overdubbing. .... But that is not what this comment is about.
    The point is, these inexpensive headphones are as good (if not better) than equivalent "name brand" headphones for 1/10 the price. Some home-grown products from China are wonderful!

      They're doing OK in China, but not as good as in the oversea market. Oneplus has a reasonable quality control, they are essentially a child company of OPPO and so they probably share the parts purchasing team, the factories and the quality control team.

    What I've always wondered about in this regard is: How do Chinese people actually handle these issues when shopping for electronics?
    I'm especially talking about lying in specs, on sites like Aliexpress. Things like exactly the same powerbank being advertised from 20.000mAh to 100.000mAh, and when you look inside the cells add up to like 8.000mAh. Or LED lamps being advertised as 15W and later turning out to be about 8W only.
    Do Chinese people socially know/expect to be cheated and mentally deduct a significant percentage off the specs when shopping? Or do they simply not care about details as long as it's cheap/affordable? Or is this problem limited to online stores like Ali, and real-world shopping in Shenzhens markets does not exhibit these issues?

    It will take China another 25 or more years to catch up with quality that the west are used too. Japan did that very fast and by the early 70s, most japanese products are top par.
    China need to respect the IP law too if they want to have their own brand out for international market. In many cases they just copy

      China would be foolish to follow the Japanese. Chinese companies are outperforming them while the Japanese companies are failing b/c their business models and products are not competitive. Look at how well Sony's Vios, Panasonic Hitachi, Olympus, Toshiba and Sharp for example. The only area where Japanese consumer tech goods is still doing well is high-end camera and gaming consoles. However, I'll admit Chinese cars other than Geely's Volvo and BYD buses might require a decade or more from being competitive in US markets though and perhaps 25 years to reach Toyota and Honda standards.

    Rangefinders for golf and hunting can get very expensive. Bushnell premium models are 300-450 dollars, budget ones at big sport stores are still 150 ish.
    There is a Chinese brand called Mileseey that has the corner on budget rangefinders at 70-85 dollars.
    At the lower price point I am concerned about durability, but it comes in a nice soft case that should protect it very well. Also, it is not legal for tournament golf because it can not shut off it’s slope function. There is a tournament model that cost more, which makes sense for more features.

    You could do a whole TH-cam channel going and buying, and trying Chinese products, telling us what sucks and what doesn't, then pointing us to links on where to buy it. I would happily pay an affiliate commission to you to get an unbiased review. Specifically, for example: I know brands such as JBL, etc manufacture their products there. Are there people selling no name products that are the same quality, from the same manufacturing facilities but you don't have to pay for the brand name? Best wishes - enjoying your channel.

    I have a heap of Chinese stuff and it's great. My favorite microphone is HTDZ HT-320A shotgun, I bought it right at Huaqian Bei seven years ago at totally random place just looking at its build quality and packaging, and it never let me down, not even once, especially considering its price (I also have Superlux dynamic mics approved by couple of global TV channels and several professional musicians, and BOYA wireless system). I won't say that these mics are as indestructible as the most venerable French LEM DO21b or Sony F-115, but are pretty close to that and sound quality is as good as you'd expect from Shure or RODE. Well, I wouldn't refuse Sennheiser or RODE but only for free ;).
    My laptop is Lenovo (T-series, though, a rebadged IBM, still good old ”missile-proof armor plate”), my phones are Xiaomi and tablet is Huawei... There are several things apart from “serious” cameras that I'm sure can't be Chinese, but, well... some Chinese lenses are good enough already for professional applications, like certain bags and video tripods... But, well, action cameras? Chinese, Yi and SJCAM (I have Sony, Contour and GoPro 3BE too, but SJ7 is my favorite - I'm a FullHD guy, 4K is not for me). My favorite travel always-with-me photo tripod is carbon SIRUI (seven years and almost no trouble). LED lights? Nothing can beat Aputure, Viltrox and Yongnuo LEDs. And gimbals... well, I have only a GoPro-type gimbal by Feiyu, and it is the company that actually made the whole concept of camera gimbal practical. So, gyroscope-based gimbals for filming are purely Chinese thing, even more than DJI drones. The most recent addition to my kit are live streaming boxes by Digicast and URay, and I daresay that these things to their job flawlessly, giving, once properly set up, way less headache than LiveU solutions, although they are in different league, of course... yet. But, I guess, several years and giants of the field like LiveU, Aviwest, TVU, Dejero and Teradek will get a run for their money with Chinese companies breathing them in the neck, like it gradually happens with all things digital.

    If Made in China is that bad, people won't buy again and again...
    British people regarded German products are bad quality, they want germans to mark "made in Germany", now what? Chinese products are improving just like Japanese.
    Because almost everything is made in China, low middle high class, Chinese brands also produce everything low to high class, so you have more chance to get bad impression, for example You don't have hear Made in India..
    Lots of low Chinese products are designed to be cheap, not good quality, the cost is the key. China factory produces based on buyer's request. You pay what you get.
    So I still hear Africans Indians still say Chinese quality is bad, Because they can't afford 500USD Huawei, only 100USD Redmi, even 50USD knockoffs phones, it just proves that you are poor.
    Shenzhen looks like manhattan..I think there will be more higher skyscrapers in 5 years, surpass New York, Shenzhen is future of China, it has most advanced technology, Tencent, Huawei, ZTE, DJI, BYD etc..China is improving in fastest speed just US 100 years ago.

      yup....get rid of the "communist party", change to federal republic, give a few years.....and.... given China's excellent abilities to copy stuff from the west.....we might see some Trump and Clinton copies. Sure that will make the world a better place? for the Chinese people? Or for everyone else? given how the west, led by Europe in the 19th century, and by USA in the 20th, has exploited and somewhat destroyed Africa, South-America, parts of Asia and the middle East. Everything can always be improved...but...Maybe, just maybe, China isn't all that bad just the way it is???

      That was a long time ago when the Brits thought Germans products were of poor quality. The German government got embarassed about that reputation and instituted engineering/craftsmen think tanks and quality control authorities to combat bad products being made. 2 centuries on German products are known world wide for quality. If China can do the same and quality control their brands the bad rep will soon fade.

      China is the world's leading country in electricity production from renewable energy sources, with over double the generation of the second-ranking country, the United States. Chinese market is largest electric cars consumer and producer, renewables energy is 24% in 2014..China is building 5 nuclear power station every year, China plan to build 80 nuclear power station in 10 years..
      CO2 emission per capita, Americans are 5 times higher than A chinese..
      USA is even higher than whole Europe, USA is 321.4 million.. population, Europe 743.1 million..americans, not shameful?
      I heard capitalist Trump want USA back coal?
      China is NO.1 industrial country, it has surpass USA in 2010, West moved all low dirty heavy industry to China, China produce 60% steel and concrete, that's why West has no pollution..just like the West decades ago, it will take time..but Communist has no democracy, our dictator Xi says GO GREEN, we have to go that way in fast speed, or we are doomed.
