Winston I am 58 just today. I have watched every single one of your videos over the last 3 years. So I subscribed.
And eventually I decided to become a Patreon.
I was born in South Africa, my family moved to Australia when I was young. And when I graduated from University (Electronics) I moved to England where I finally met my Chinese wife, from Heilongjiang province and she loves your videos, especially those with Sasha, so please include her more in your adventures.
You are a great presenter, and you deserve a good life.
Well done Winston, you are a treasure.

Winston, I can relate to a lot of the sentiments in your videos. I've been living in China for nearly a decade (also roughly 1/3rd of my life) and for years I've wanted to share some of the experiences/things learned from my time here. There's some bad, some good, but overall I'm happy to be here. It's true though, that no matter how long we spend in China, we'll always be viewed as foreigners. I find that it often works to our advantage, though. Great job on the vids, keep up the good work.

A foreigner who comes to China, married a Chinese girl, loves China for what it is, has a right to say what is good or bad in China. It is a third eye, telling you what you are as you cannot always see yourself in a true light. One should listen and improve on it.
I find it equally annoying, being a person of Chinese ethnicity living and working in UK for over 50 years, to be commonly told " if you don't like it, go back to China", as if I have no right to criticise on anything that is on the down side.

Winston, as an ethnic Chinese, I must say you are doing your best out there. you made lots of fair comments on Chinese society, which i app reciate alot.you are A nice mirror for me and my people.
i can totally understand your feeling, however, when talking about the immigrant culture inChina, you just like A player coming too early to the playground, the others will come sooner or latter, but you have to endure the empty so far.
you may notice that 38years ago, most of the Chinese people can only see foreigners on pictures. nowadays, igusee most ordinary people are just getting used to see those people looking different to their own, not to mention the way to live together🙄. so mostChinese people when having problems with their friends from different cultural bgd, will instictly responsed as more introversive and sometimes negatively. we just simply not used to GET along with you guys, and we don't want to make any embarrsment. but that doesn't mean we cannot get along with sincerity.
So, i wish you cheer up, and be ware of your outstanding role in the movement of our society, because of people like you, our people will be less cut off day by day.✌

Wow, just watched this video couple minutes ago. I can explain to you some reasons why some chinese hate and even insult you.
First and most importantly, we have been teached in our history lessons that our ancestors were treated badly and our homeland was invaded by those westerners and Japanese for more than 100 years since the 1840s. And thus there is a subtle feelings within the chinese that they feel both self-abased and admiring in front of the westerners. Well, things is getting better as china grows more and more powerful and more young people have the chance to communicate with outside world , but the self-abasement can't be got rid off easily.
And second, the education system of china doesn't mean to educate people think indepently. Well, of course, people can think more independently than any time thanks to the prevailing of the Internet, but it's still a long way to go.
And the last reason I wanna say, is that it's really hard for every individual to have an wide sight and also keep an open mind. Some of them don't even have the chance to see the outside world with their own eyes and don't have the patience to read to think.
However, I do believe the whole society will evolve gradually. And we need to hear your voice. So keep awesome!

Worrying about age is kind of silly and vain. Who cares about a number anyway? It doesn't really mean much once you get out of your teens and pretty much nothing at all once you get out of your 20s. With good modern health, 30 is the new 20 anyway. Healthy and active people don't really start getting "old" until their mid 50s to 60s.
At that point, I'd view it more as a victory, honestly... But, I guess it gives some people something to complain about.

I was born and raised in China and immigrated to the US when I was 15 with my parent. Spent 16 years being American, and ya people still treat you like Fresh of the Boat (was called that in my face once as well), even though the States is supposed to be one of the most open-minded countries, not to mention the long-existing history of immigration. You are not alone you know

    • @SA-5247
      @SA-5247 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah that actually makes sense a little though. People are usually polite but also try to connect with what they know.. so they start with the obvious. My buddy from German (moved to the us when he was 15.. didn’t speak English) and he still gets asked. Very slight accent (learned English in the Midwest so the dialect is unique but also very mixed between northern and southern draw with some Germans and polish elongated vows). I don’t think people are broadly making assumptions over simply trying to make conversation.

    • @JK12345-z
      @JK12345-z 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@SA-5247 I guess the problem is that media keeps emphasising the differences between countries and cultures as it is overall driven by people in power who wants to remain in position to control their portion of the humanity, therefore differentiation must be sustained. It's universal and ideology makes a very small difference. I've lived in a few different countries now and I am always amazed by the commonality across cultures, but you don't get to see it just unless you travel

    @Serpentza:
You can look at this as spending 1/3rd of your existence in a faraway land, or you can look at this as having been a fantastic adventure.
You've gotten out of somewhere's that's rapidly falling to pieces, and taking a tremendous leap of faith to go 'Into The Breach' as it were, of unexplored, and unknown territory.
There's a phrase, or T-Shirt I read somewhere, that says: *'Africa - None But The Brave'* , and that definately applies to you!
I've been to Sierra-Leone, been/lived-in the Middle East, and I've lived to hate both of them, but the difference was always: I've had an easy Escape-Route out; you didn't!
Yours' has been a fantastic adventure, and you've helped us all by just showing the best portrait of China: Everyday Life!
Without you, we'd (Gwylo's/Gaijin's/Miguk's/Westerner's) would continue to flood there, and get both seriously dissapointed, overwhelmed, incarcerated, and just plain broken! You help us all by teaching us all what's real.
Whether it's how to buy Street Foods, how to watchout for bad Vege's, where to buy quality electronics, where to find American Foods, or the folks you've introduced us to, or just even showing us how to drive through Shenzhen on a Motorcycle! All of it's been a spectacular guide!
You might be getting restless, and might even feel the calling for Brighter Shores once again, and that's okay. There's plenty of us who'd like to help you and your Lady, should you choose to.
You stayed for the best reasons of all: *Love is worth fighting for!*
You can think of this as either 'I've wasted 1/3 of my life', or...
*'What A Long Strange Trip It's Been!'*
    Happy Birthday Winston

it's just naivety and having homogeneous social circles that leaves people with unrealistic expectations about living in a foreign country. New language, completely different culture, food, etc...anyone who knows ppl who's lived abroad knows it's a tough . ..first generation Asian immigrants in North America still live a very Asian lifestyle, Whites in places like Hong Kong hangs around in lan kwai fong with other whites and Chinese Americans...first generation immigrants seldom adapts/integrates unless they are in an environment where they are forced to and they will not like it.....If this winston dude were american/brit, he'd probably hauled his ass back to America/UK long ago (possibly with or without his chinese bride), but he's from South Africa..so there goes his plan-B...I can tell he's still not well-adjusted to the place, although he's trying, ..he's just tolerating the China life and that's why some nationals are getting glass hearted because they didn't know what he's going through and thought he's just an arrogant white dude

Not because some people have a glass heart, but because many Westerners ignore cultural differences, different ways of thinking, and simply use their own culture and value orientation to evaluate things in China, and never explain these deep-seated reasons to his audience, this conclusion seems selfish and neutral, It also appears that some Westerners face different cultures of arrogance and arrogance. The most typical example is the existence of "wall", in the Western view this is very undemocratic, is a strong political color measures, but in our own view, more is facing the Western advantage of public opinion and capital advantage, as a weak party to protect their unique culture, value orientation and local capital of the helpless measures. In fact, the wall on the mainland is really easy for ordinary people, the wall online with Baidu can find a large number of legitimate filing of the wall software. But Westerners will only interpret it from their own values,More than 10 years of Western people can not exception. The western surface claims to be pluralistic, democracy, tolerance, in fact, very conservative and rigid, very different from the Western value orientation is very repulsive, typical of the United States, the Chinese Exclusion Act, they can not understand why the Chinese laborers across the sea to the United States to work for money but not in the local consumption enjoy, home production, The laborers are willing to work hard again. At that time, Americans could not understand the root cause of Chinese laborers, and could not understand the deep sense of responsibility and urgency of their descent, family and even future generations. Chinese laborers in the local do not consume, do not produce offended the American elite business, hard-working and hard work to offend the blacks, Indians, Irish, Mexicans, such as the bottom of the United States, so a self-proclaimed democracy, freedom of the immigrant country has introduced a specific ethnic groups of the Chinese Exclusion Act. Even into the modern,There are still many Westerners who cannot understand China's belief in religion without faith. In the Western value orientation, many moral norms and modes of thinking are passed down through religion, without religious belief, which is the embodiment of moral and non-reverence in many westerners. But what do these Westerners know about us? Chinese people's moral norms and ways of thinking are more Confucian ideas, historical allusions, family rules and other cultural methods of inheritance, China's thousands of years of history has never appeared in any one of the Government and the unity of the dynasty can explain a lot of problems. Based on the reasons for the importance of the above cultural independence to the Chinese people, so this is back to the "wall" of the issue, China is a heritage of thousands of years culture does not sever the civilization, our value orientation and thinking mode is a set of perfect and different from the Western model of the system, but westerners like to use their own way of thinking one-sided interpretation, Such a conclusion was certainly unjust, and naturally aroused many a "glass-heart" aversion and Disgust.

Wei, of course he is an outsider sort of. China is not a county for immigrating. At least it is way too hard an outsider to obtain it, plus not that many people around the world want to be anyway.
Visiting China, on the other hand, is easy. Basically all it take is apply the VISA, and pay the fee for it. Some other advance would be, well, bring one more smart phone, and load it with a lot of China only map, China only translation software, and try to get a China data sim card for that phone.
The reason you need another phone is that, you do not want these China software, well, sort of, but not exactly, hijack your normal phone.
No, Google map, google translation is NEVER going to work unless you have a VPN service, but take a note, VPN is not always working in China, and the China Grate Firewall, is become smarter and smarter that can filter out VPN package on the fly. VPN is the sensitive area like Xinjiang would never going to work.
Talks about money, cash. Well, make sure the ATM card you are using is accessible in China. Of course, fee would be charge while you are taking the money from the ATM machine, but well, it is better than bring too much cash with you. Or well, depending on what you are going to do in China, and how long, which part are you going to stay. Consider about 2xx RMB for a regular room, of course could be much cheap for hostel, and the food there is not that expensive if you ain't trying something too special, 50 RMB is good for a dish. Fired rich could be as cheap as 20 RMB or even lower. 1 USD is about 6.x RMB for now, I think. Entire fee for tourist spot would be as much as 2xx RMB, well, some at lowest as 50 for the forbidden city. Local Bues, at most 2 RMB for the whole trip... Metro for most places max with 10 RMB.
Consider China is still a 3rd world county, although some places like Canton, ShenZhang, ShangHai are world class cities, there still mixed with some people, that is kind of what you expect form the 3rd world country since most of the people can go freely to whatever they want to go in China. So you might still see Children going to the bathroom not exactly doing it in the actual bathroom. All in all, going there to take a look is fine, as soon as you do nothing with the political stuff, or something that related to Liu Xiaobo sort of things. China Communist party is still very straight in that kind of thing, but for travel for fun, they do not care.
How I know it? Well, I have been staying there long enough to know it.

I have never been to mainland China. This Canadian (of Chinese ancestry) thought mainland China was a backward communist hellhole as often portrayed by mainstream American and some right-wing Canadian news media. Compared to those biased western reports, Winston (serpentza) has been quite fair in presenting the real China, both good and bad side.
The Chinese government and the Chinese people should be grateful to Winston and perhaps pay him as a tour guide or presenter because he dispels the myth of China as a communist hellhole. No Chinese person can do as good a job as Winston in promoting the real China to the rest of the world because non-Chinese will not trust a native Chinese presenter, prejudging everything he/she says as communist propaganda.
As for those Chinese glass-hearts who wants to kick out all foreigners. Be careful of what you wish for. Banning foreigners will cause billions of dollars of foreign investments to leave China; those foreign investments are vital to China's economic growth. It will also stop millions of tourists from spending valuable foreign currency in China. China will go back to being a backward isolated poor country, ie China of the 1950's, 60's & early 70's, or similar to present day North Korea.

As an South African, I have spend 18 years of my life scourcing, buying and importing products from the PROC to SA. My knowledge far exceeds yours. I'm not misleading anyone, I'm showing the reality of living here which is something your "far exceeding knowledge" has evidently never been exposed to, have you seen my travel documentaries? First of all, China is a non-immigrant country, so foreigners are still rare in China. In addition, the Chinese government’s attitude of not allowing too many immigrants to come in keeps the stability of Chinese society, so it is rare to see many disputes in China. A little bit makes the Chinese very special and very specific.

Either you are a Communist agent, either you are one of those liberals/christians who hate nothing as much as criticism; who construe any negative remark, as true as maybe, as 'evil', because it hurts feelings etc and then are able to detect 'racism' and 'hate crimes' everywhere.

Most chinese have only met foreigners as tourists, so it is obvious that they always treat you as a tourist. The west is different because it is a land where foreigners arrive to be immigrants. Hence people will likely treat you as one of them. In non-immigrant countries, this is just the way it is. Sad but nothing you can change.

You think that if you lived in Japan, India or Thailand for that long, you would be treated differently. China has a over a billion population and you just one billionth of that. So that fact that you and me are treated differently no matter how long we stay is but natural.

Honestly, you will feel the same in any east Asian countries. Yet you still find China full of opportunities to you, don't you? You are not there to love the country. You are there to make a living as you cannot find similar opportunities elsewhere in the world. Fair enough? If you really wish to live somewhere that you can blend in, come to USA, UK, or go back to South Africa, where you were from. You will be much better off.

You forgot that globalization has struck China only recently, and that is about 40 years, and will take another 40 years until China accepts diversity as a sign of strength instead of weakness. Many things will change all over the world and China will be affected and will affect others, and that means there will be more inter reactions all over the world as barriers break down and people slowly but gradually getting to know more about others and vice versa.Globalization by the end of the century and that is by the year 2100 will be completed more or less and Artificial Intelligent governments will be established all over the world as the only way for people to function properly in their daily lives.

It's been so many years indeed. I can still remember that very first video I watched on this channel, one that features you went out to buy breakfast on a scooter or something, then went back to sit on a chair on the balcony or just outside of your room, drinking beer. It was a simple video of a guy talking about his life in China. I subscribed to the channel that day because of the simplicity of the content of that video, it involves nothing of politics and isn't extremely left or right, neither liberal or conservative, which are the tendency of videos about China tend to incline.
The life footages showed in your video is something I'm familiar with and relate to. It's good to see that it stayed the same for the most part over the years.

The fact that China does not allow immigration shows that China hasn't yet joined the international community. It is representative of the attitude that China is the "center" of the world and that the rest of the world will have to conform to China's perspective. This attitude is so deeply ingrained in the Chinese that I don't think it will change for many generations if ever. Therefore, I think the international community should require China to be reciprocal in it's policies. In other words, if an American or South African can't immigrate to China then Chinese citizens should not be able to immigrate abroad etc. It's time for the world to reassess and stop giving China a free ride.

When China opened up and adopted a market economy, China was given a lot of advantages based on the idea that it was an emerging economy. China is now the world's second largest economy. Time to rethink the deal. (I am not a Trump supporter, BTW and I do not support his ideas on China.)

I actually can't believe I am going to defend China.
People of the west are impatient when it comes to wanting the rest of the world to adopt it's values and lifestyle. China has come a very, very long ways in terms of openness in a relatively short time.
It simply wasn't that long ago that China was like North Korea.
Thirty years ago people like Serpentza would not be allowed to live in China.
He walks around China recording freely in the open without any fear of arrest. Then he says whatever he wants.
Anybody who doesn't think Chinese authorities know what he's doing is a fool. They know he is no threat to China.
By letting him and other vloggers operate this way says a lot about their willingness to join the world community.
If Serpentza and his cohorts in China ever simultaneously completely stop communicating with the rest of the world, be afraid. Very afraid.

DavidRsaid don't assume western countries are doing charity to give Chinese immigrants green cards. Those Chinese are not refuges! They are mostly highly educated, rich Chinese elites! They contribute much much more than those white local loosers who only know sleep on national welfare system.
At the same time, China has a Brian drain problems!
Don't be hypocritical. You know west countries don't welcome every Chinese and Indians.

+Tom T China has never claimed to be an immigrant country whereas the west does, does this difference hold legitimate ground to criticise China? I bet not. If it's the non-equivalence which westerners are discontent about, they should know this is created by their own democratic government who have decided on their behalf to take in the number of Chinese nationals that they have; complainers should know where to toss their complaints and whom to rally against, their own decision makers that is. Secondly, while the west stay fully committed to portraying China as an evil, authoritarian, red Communist state, why would one even ask to migrate here or even come? Why would they even expect anything at all? Are they not hypocritical?

China is a multi-ethnic country and the 56 ethic groups including Han together forms the modern China. The Americans slaughtered the Indians and conquered the whole North American continent, while China has a completely different history.

This is very important if you intend to live in a foreign country for any length of time. It shows that you respect the citizens of the country that you are visiting or living in. If all of the human race learns more about those in other countries and cultures it can help to bring us closer. I believe that most people in the world are tolerant and good, we are separated and taught to hate and fear each other by our governments and media.

I never felt he get in to any Chinese culture. His video made me feel that he is always outside of Chinese circle and keep judging on China. I agree he said mostly true about china. However, I barely sea him with a Chinese friend in his video. According to local people around him( or in his city), he barely had any Chinese friend. I feel he never try to understand Chinese culture, but critics on China's issue. China has many philosophies that made up my culture, but he speak nothing about it. For me, he is trying to grab western people's attention by critics china. OF COURSE, IT IS ONLY MY OWN OPINION! So, if you don't like my comment, please don't judge me. I do see many western people who gets more fans on internet and have friends there. They lived good and have a bright future with good jobs.i think one main reason is that those people get to understand Chinese and be friendly to us. Those are the typical one I know: Fulingfang, inno巧克力,高乐思 and his crews, his sister, etc. Those people are from all around of the world. I believe most of them have a well paid job in china. So, why don't you change your attitude to china, I believe Chinese people welcomes you as a person, not a white person if you are not just criticize with your white superiority. Thank you!

DavidRsaid DavidRsaid I am sorry if I don't use the word accurately. I am not saying he got benefits in china as a white. He can't own a green card is not because he is white, it is a rule to all the foreigners(I don't really know why those rules set up). Same, Chinese don't hold privileges in other countries. They can work and hold properties because those countries allowed everyone to, not just Chinese.

DavidRsaid by the way, Chinese immigrates bring large benefits to USA. U can learn more about this. For example, if I move to USA, one way is to bring 500,000 dollar to USA, so I MAY get a green card. And I think Chinses contributed much to those foreign countries.
