You check the oil level routinely with a cold engine that hasn't been run at all that day. If you have started the engine, you can only get a rough estimate of oil level. If you change your oil with a warm engine, leave it a quarter qt low until it is stone cold and then ease oil level up carefully to the mark. A very common and problematic issue is OVER fill. Gen1 SBC's (small block chevy), are famous for holding oil up in the rocker arm area and an over fill can suck oil up into the PVC system and cause several angst ridden issues. Avoid oil overfill on ANY engine. For a Novice, this means if you check the oil the next day after oil change or add, and oil level is above full on the dip stick, get a large hypodermic from Amazon and a 4ft piece of clear vinyl tubing and Get It OUT through the dipstick tube. Do Not let it go.
Park the vehicle the night before where you are going to change the oil and let it sit overnight. Drain the oil cold. I know all the misinformed and old timer's are going to balk at that but it's not 1960 anymore. 5wt oil is thin as freak'n water. I wouldn't even use 5wt in any Gen 1 SBC unless I lived in the Arctic Circle. If the conniption just won't let go of you, drain the oil hot, burn your hands and arms, but let it drain over night.
GM only specified 5wt in the shown engine or any Gen 1 SBC to help up mileage. 10-30 or 10-40 is more appropriate for all Gen1 SBC's including Vortec (consult an oil viscosity vs temp chart). If your oil pressure is at or less than 20lbs at idle (in D for Automatics), at running temp (195), you need higher weight oil regardless of the oil fill cap or owners manual. Edit: In any Gen 1 SBC.
Note: The 1st number is the actual weight of the oil. 2nd number is the viscosity it will rise to with temperature.

@canadianpopeye8066 Thank you very much! I recorded the video approximately two and a half years ago, and I currently have many videos that I have not yet shared. I thought it would be a good idea to release them, and perhaps they may be of assistance to someone. Once again, I appreciate you taking the time to watch!
