Have you ever wanted to know what a real Moscow neighbourhood looks like. A place where people live and work away from the tourist spots. Well, come with me for a walk around Shabolovskaya, a cool little neighbourhood about 7 minutes by Metro from the centre of the city.

I've spent one month in Russia Moscow. Criss-crossed Moscow on foot and every type of transportation.
Day or night is the same picture,
peace and tranquility. Walked from Komsomolskay to Red Square train station. From Theater Oleg Tabakov Cyxarevskaya to Mir Prospect train Station. From Paveletskata Train Station to Taganskaya Train Station .
20 thousand steps and more every day.
Metro is a lifeline. Doesn't matter where you enter,you'll find connections underground.
Troika monthly transportation card will give an intimated ride underground and above the ground. Pay attention to Music Grand Hall near Paveletskaya.
Theaters are for every interest. Flowers sold and bought everywhere. Moscow is constantly being improved, repainted, built, rebuilt, and made accessible.
Awesome way to see Sadovoe cycle is to take B BUS.
From a Taganskaya to Smolenskaya , from Smolenskaya to Taganskaya. It will complete the circle. Take train #3 to see Clear Pond and along Moscow River. Don't forget the University of Lomonosov Lenin gorky.
Ie ., walk , drive, fly , but get to Russia .

Do you know. I've spent about 7 weeks in Russia. And I can say that I agree with you. So much crime is happening in England. And I've not seen anything wrong during my visits to Russia.

@hansschwartz1480 So I've spent my time in Saint Petersburg, Shushary. And during my visits. I never saw anything bad. Of course. I'm not saying that crime doesn't happen. But I just haven't seen it yet.
My Russian wife lives and works in Moscow and I will be soon but I will be riding one of my custom built (by me) bicycles that I will bringing with me to get around.

We do have our share of problems out here as well. Uncontrolled migration, corruption on top of the government and attempts of mimicking the BS coming from your "first world countries ", such as the climate change, carbon footprint and food from those poor grasshoppers. But overall atmosphere is purer, I must admit. I've been everywhere, including 7 different states in the States.
So go. Ask Russell Bentley how the Russians like Americans.

Hello! I literally discovered you a few hours ago and watched most videos (granted, they're not many yet 😅), liked, subbed, easy decision because two things i love very much are already on your channel title: Scotland and Moscow!
(And imagine i haven't been to any yet! Hopefully Moscow within the year!)
I am greek and i was happy watching this video in particular, as i already know all the brands mentioned, and all the russian words mentioned 🙂
I've been learning russian since December on Duolingo (+ ASMR and a podcast for listening) and yeah, before anyone laughs i have to say, nobody's gonna learn russian on Duolingo, however it's good enough for the basics.
I've known russians almost all my life (and i'm 40), both online and in life, and all of them are some of the kindest people i've known.

Love from NYC I'm absolutely disappointed with what's going on in the UK overall I have never been there and I always felt like even though no society is perfect you always had this charm about you and I couldn't wait to visit.. I still do but I'm absolutely disappointed that actual Britain's are not in control of their own culture anymore.. Same reasons here in the US I'm not sure which one is worse But regardless I can't wait to visit Russia.. CHEERS! ❤🇷🇺💪

You should stay in your best country
Part of the historical center of Moscow is called "Kitay-city". This name has nothing to do with the country of China. "keta" or "kitA" is a kind of piles that reinforced this part of the bank of the Moskva River up to the XIX century! Back in the XIX century, under this wall of piles, on the very bank of the river, there was a whole town of houses of the poor. There were frequent fires here.
Well, the name of the China country in Russian means “The kita country”, meaning “The wall country”. The country behind the wall. So, there is a relation between “kita” and China. :)
@@KVentz ,No, it's not like that. If you pronounce how I just spelled "Kitay". Then in Russian it is similar to the eastern country of China.
But if we are talking about the ancient part of Moscow called "Kitay-city", then this means only one thing: this quarter of Moscow was once fenced off from the side of the Moskva River with special wooden piles called "kita" in Russian.
Can confirm. It has nothing to do with China.

Thanks for the nice walk. Important facts about the urban environment in Russia and the former USSR. You are a young man and you probably don't have children, so kindergartens, schools, hospitals, etc. are not shown in the video.
Your neighbourhood in the video has 3 kindergarden and 4 schools, 2 big hospitals.
In Russia, according to the rules of urban construction, a kindergarten or school should not be located further than 500-800 meters from each house, so that each child can walk to study by yourself without parents. Every school of 60s - nowadays are located in the middle of block avoiding crossing busy roads to protect safety of kids.
Hospitals usually are located at a distance of no more than 15 minutes by public transport or 60 minutes of slow walking. Public transport starting at 4 am to 1 am, in towns at 6 am to 9-10 pm, time interval is not more than 15 min. So you don't need a car if you live in Russia.
According to these rules, 80% and more of apartment buildings in Russia have been built.
Each apartment in the houses has central heating. Оne boiler plant heats 10-30 thousand people.
That's why apartments are so popular with Russians. It's just convenient. If you go to work in the morning, you do not need to turn off the heating and follow kids to school in the morning if they are at age 8 or more. If your kid is small just take him in a stroller to the nearest kindergarden in 5 min. Every morning you go out of your appartment and come back evening after but you always 24/7 have your room temp +21-26. And all utilities are cheap, on average no more than 30-100 USD per month for all inclusive.
Everyone in the USSR had the right to receive an apartment for free from the state as property after of 10 years of work experience no matter what kind of job it was. For 70 years of USSR, the state has been building multi-storey typically buildings in cities and towns, because they are more convenient to maintain and cheaper if the government pays for it, and not you :) But socialism ended, and all people remained living in multi-storey buildings and received full ownership of housing as a gift from the state. So Russia is a country where about 80% populations has an own property without mortgage at all.

Kitay-gorod is actually coming not from Kitay which is China in Russian. The original word was Ketay (but somehow the word tranformed to Kitay years after), which is kind of circular defence structure, like a fortified fence

@@sunx6008 У нас даже многие русские не знают, что китай-город - это город за стеной. Вокруг Москвы было три стены - кремль, китай-город и внешняя стена, которая вообще по сути частокол. Ну и то, что с нашей позиции "Китай" - это страна за стеной ))).
Самая внешняя стена называлась валом, отсюда названия улиц садового кольца, как Земляной вал, коровий вал и т.д.
Огромное число москвичей имеет загородные дома или дачи. Они могут быть как летними, т.е. пригодными для проживания только в тёплую погоду, так и дома, где можно жить круглый год. Мои родители живут с апреля по октябрь за городом (они пенсионеры). У брата дача рядом с городом, когда начинаются летние каникулы они всей семьей переезжают в загородный дом и оттуда ездят на работу, а дети с бабушкой на даче. 🙂

No graffiti or other signs of vandalism - that's the first thing I check in a city. In the UK they even celebrated and speculate with graffiti as a commodity. i.e Banksy or whatever the name was.

It's very convinient to buy ice cream during winter because you can just put it in your bag and effortlessly bring it to the safety of your freezer))
Look how clean and orderly their cities are. Everything is well-maintained and properly regulated, from the metro to other public transport services. There's no graffiti, offensive remarks on the walls, or posters sticking around, which I believe is the main reason for the city to preserve its own character. Moscow looks safer and more secure than our cities. Most importantly, there's no fear of getting robbed or stabbed in the streets, which I believe is a ginormous plus point for Moscow.
In Russia, everywhere is clean and safe.

In Russia, affordable medicine and social policy medicines should also be available, so there are many pharmacies and they are often around the clock.
There are also a lot of flower shops (I remember how in Cambridge I tried to buy a bouquet on Sunday, because we were going to visit a university professor and wanted to please the hostess of the house).
In Russian cities, flower shops are everywhere, near the metro, for sure, and in nearby points they also work around the clock.
And most Russians do not live in rented apartments, but in their own flat. There are completely different laws for apartments and flat (an flat is considered a living space, but apartments are not, therefore taxes are higher on apartments, but there are no requirements for the amount of direct sunlight that should fall on the windows of housing;n my opinion, it is impossible to register in the apartment).
But at the same time, many Russians have a cottage with a garden outside the city, where they go on weekends. Just look at the traffic map on Saturday morning from Moscow and back on Sunday evening. Someone has a small house built by their grandfather, someone has a mansion. My family has 5 dachas - my grandmothers, my parents, my brothers, my aunts, my husband have one from his parents and my husband and I are building a new house together, by the lake.
Libraries are being renovated, in addition to books, there should now be an IT-zone and facilities for master classes.
We are eat ice cream not to cool down, but as a dessert.😂
And what difference does it make, if you want something? Moreover - 25C ice cream is not so cold anymore. Just try it. But I advise you to take creamier varieties in winter, "plombeer", for example, or "lakomka".

А, вот, уже кирпичную «китайгородскую» стену в Москве строили позже, сохранив старинное, уже привычное на то время название этой линии городского оборонительного укрепления.

In Moscow, people tend not to interact randomly, even with neighbors. We also find it strange to ask strangers such things as "How are you doing?".
Although being polite is always welcomed, simple "hello", "thanks" and "goodbye" is enough.
But, just like with most russians, if you actually have common topics or you are already discussing something, then people will open up to you pretty easily.
You just have to remember that we take questions at face value, so if you ask people, "How was your day?", they will literally describe their day.
hi, I live in Russia in an apartment building, there are 36 apartments in my entrance. I say hello to all the neighbors I meet when I enter the house. There may be some conversations with neighbors on the floor - 3 apartments, the apartment below me on the floor below and above me on the floor above. Separately, I can communicate with neighbors around my age and with mothers of children on the playground. You are not required to have mandatory conversations and greetings with all your neighbors.

@@mikem9892You are confusing the concept of friends and neighbors. In Russia, people don’t like empty talk; we are straightforward and talk mostly to the point. With relatives and friends there is confidential communication, and with neighbors there is mainly a formal greeting.

Hi Jim! Thank you for your videos. I appreciate your positive attitude to my country. Of course, we do have problems, but it’s just nice to hear that we also have “human faces”. I’d recommend you as an idea to think about “Moscow city design”. You may notice that all names of the stores are written are the same from the technical point of view: they have the same size, kind of similar font, distance between letters, etc. You may also notice that we don’t have huge neon advertisements like in NYC or Vegas. We did have them before but it was very disturbing to the residents. All offline stores and restaurants must follow these guidelines. The guidelines were developed by “Artemy Lebedev studio”, if I’m not mistaken.
None of the bloggers have ever talked about this, but it does make the “visual daily life” more comfortable. Best regards and good luck, Julia

Well, firstly, the ice cream is delicious, and secondly, in winter the apartments are warm, and sometimes even hot, thanks to central heating or their own gas boiler rooms in modern houses, so it’s not a problem to eat ice cream at home. If consumed outdoors at -25, then these are rather refined and unique experimenters, I think. At a minimum you need to have a healthy immune system 😅

Здравствуйте,симпатичный шотландец.К сожалению незнаю вашего имени,если можно напишите по-русски как вас зовут,чтоб в дальнешем обращаться по имени.Мороженое мы русские едим в мороз потому что вкусно😂 ну,и испытываем не обычные ощущения в желудке когда при глотании кусок мороженого туда падает😂и когда рот замерзает на морозе нам тоже нравится😂.Ведь в России зима длинная, не всегда же есть его дома,хочется и на улице😂.Это как у вас в шотландии мужчины ходят в юбках(килт), мы то понимаем что это ваша культура и не все в них там ходят а определённая народность,но для наших мужчин это дикость,ну как для вас мороженое зимой на улице😊 Ну,а про самокаты и скутеры,чтоб у вас шотландии их не крали,надо менять мышление и улучшать качество жизни☝быть человеком с большой буквы "Ч" и понимать что эти новшества и блага не для тебя одного а для всех граждан,для удобства передвижения.Ведь не плохо вы проехали,припарковали на месте через приложение Яндекс,после вас другой человек воспользуется,очень удобно👍А вы всё-таки попробуйте мороженое зимой - 25 гр 💪✊♥️🙋♀️

@@two7736 At first, In cities UK, there are nothing for throwing garbage. For example in Spain, you can find every corner litter 🚮 So their cities are clean.I had to take with me hours my garbage till my hotel in London because there is none.
Don't blame migrants because they adapt if there were a system. Also the British were in their countries once,they were colonizers. So they have every right to come there lol.

В России большинства есть загородные дома. Зимой жить собственном доме,вдали от театров,кафе,ресторанов,музеев,катков, общественного транспорта,витрины разных магазинов считается не очень комфортно. Так же на долгую зиму нужно позаботится о тепле,горячей воде итд, что стоит дороговато. Русского человека согреет душу больше проведение вместе на даче,бане,рыбалке искренними друзьями,чем демонстрация большого дома, богатства как показателя превосходства что принята на Западе.
Shabolovskaya is still quite central. I worked there for 5 years. It's a very nice area. Technically the metro station Shabolovskaya is outside the ring line, but you can walk to Dobrininskaya/Serpukhovskaya in 10 minutes, which are on the ring line. Oktyabrskoye is on the ring line, too.
Better to show them a neighborhood like Tsaritsyno or Krylatskoye if you want to show a more "normal" neighborhood. While plain, they are still clean and quite nice.

Ранее в том месте стояла каменная стена, ее разобрали не так уж и давно. В древне русском языке "кий"-это камень, "тай"-это конечная граница, конечная точка. Другими словами, китай это просто район обнесенный стеной. Именно по этому настоящий Китай (страна) так называется у нас, так как ранние границы Китая шли по границе Китайской Стены.
Я жила рядом с этими местами раните, очень приятно видеть их в вас на фоне и подмечать изменения, произошедшие за 2 года.
Сейчас там стало еще спокойнее и чище!

As Russian who used to live in Moscow for 5 years I would say Shabolovskaya district is definitely residential but it's expensive one, close to center of city and so on. It would be event better to see districts close to outskirts, however they also would be almost identical in terms of infrastructure and safety, but buildings will be older - a lot of typical Khrushchev and Brezhnev period buildings.
And on the question of ice cream, there are some Russian that believe ice cream is the first cure for sore throat.

When I was about eleven years old, I loved to pick some ice-cream from a kiosk after a school on my way to a home even when it was -20 Celsius these days. An ice-cream is really enjoyable at the deep minus because it's warmer than air you breathe.
I grew up in Шаболовка neighborhood in the 70s. In the 90s I moved to the US. Last time visited the area in 2017, when my daughter who studied at the University of Edinburgh (where I also spent quite some time🙂) had to spend 1 year in Moscow as part of her curriculum. It’s hard to recognize the area but your video brought back lots of memories. Looove your Scottish accent! What part of Scotland are you from?
