Today in Chicago, I had the pleasure to meet a young North Korean girl named Evelyn. 6 years ago, when she was 15 years Evelyn, she escaped North Korea with her mother for a better life. Both without passports, they spent 1 month traveling by foot across China, Laos and Thailand - where the South Korean government officially recognized her as a refugee and she was granted permission to migrate to the United States of America.
In this eye-opening interview, Evelyn tells me her escape story and how she has managed to integrate so well into American society. She lives all by herself and just bought her first car (with her hard-earned income!).

The sad thing is, not everyone is as lucky as Evelyn. Her family used a lot of money and bribery to escape, while some can’t even afford a bowl of rice…
Evelyn’s story is still very inspiring!
There's no guarantee bribery will always work, they took the same risk as anyone trying to escape and the border agents could've easily turned down their money and turned them in. The money just increased their odds slightly but it was still a huge risk.

the fact that her mom probably worked hard with the main purpose to gain enough wealth so they can escape and give her daughter a better life is so heartwarming to me.

Hearing the stories is so inspirational and they definitely need to be known! I never knew about these things til a few months ago. Schools should totally start teaching about these things. I live in Denver and i think it’d be cool if there was a museum here to show her story.
I went to high school with her. I didn’t know she was North Korean because she did not know much English and was quite shy- I knew she was Korean of-course but I did not know she was from the North. So glad to see that she is doing well. In high school I thought she was this pretty and rich education-immigrant, I had no idea that she has went through such hell to get here and it was so much more than just a rich foreigner whose parents sent them over seas for a coveted American education. Goes to show you that you never know what somebody has went through, and to always be kind.

The most important thing that should be on everyone mind currently should be to invest in different sources of income that doesn't depend on the government. Especially with the current economic crisis around the word. This is still a good time to invest in various stocks, Gold, silver and digital currencies.
I agree with you and I believe that the secret to financial stability is having the right investment ideas to enable you earn more money, I don’t know who agrees with me but either way I recommend either real estate or bitcoin and stocks.
I keep wondering how people earn money in financial markets, i tried trading bitcoin on my own made a huge loss and now I'm scared of investing more.

The fact that she had such an “easy” escape and her mother had such means to pay for the brokers etc means she was in like the super high class in North Korea. Otto Warmbier was an American student that was detained in North Korea and murdered. Thank you for sharing the story! Each person who escaped has a similar story to tell. I’m glad she was not trafficked when she got to China, like so many women. Thankful she arrive safely in country with much more freedom and she’s doing so well! What a great example she is sitting for other young people in the US!

It must've been a hard decision for her mother. They could've got caught and her family might be in jail for generations. Thats the generational punishment. And that's how North Korea keeps the people and their family in North Korea. So if you escape NK your family probably will go to jail.
