My escape from North Korea | Hyeonseo Lee | TED

  • As a child growing up in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee thought her country was "the best on the planet." It wasn't until the famine of the 90s that she began to wonder. She escaped the country at 14, to begin a life in hiding, as a refugee in China. Hers is a harrowing, personal tale of survival and hope -- and a powerful reminder of those who face constant danger, even when the border is far behind.

      What's worse is that the families of those who do get out are often tortured, imprisoned, and even killed. Not just immediate family, but even extended family. To make you think long and hard about whether your freedom means enough to sacrifice the lives oof so many others. Her talk gives no details, but I'm sure she experienced many unspeakable things. She's afraid to talk in case she still has other family there who could be hurt, or bc she doesn't want to lose her composure. There's one guy who escaped north Korea who didn't speak up for many years bc his sister was still there and he didn't want her punished bc of him. After she went crazy in prison there (God only knows what they did to her!) and was released bc she is now like a child mentally, he began talking about the atrocities going on there.

    Какая гордость за таких людей. Слёзы наворачиваются. Очень понимаю её ситуацию. Быть беженцем тяжело и пока это не испытаешь не поймёшь. Моя мама сбежала из Таджикистана во время гражданской войны с новорожденным ребёнком в руках. Беззаботному человеку не понять, каково это быть в чужой стране не имея своей, без денег, без дома, без надежды, но зато с чемоданом страха за свою жизнь и жизнь близкий оставшихся там, без документов, помощи и надежды на лучшую жизнь. Им не понять, каково это всю жизнь пахать во благо своей страны и в один момент стать мусором для неё. Давайте быть добрее и терпимее. Никто не знает, что будет завтра и что нам придётся пережить. (Edit: Guys, I didn't say my problems don't matter at all. Obviously we all have problems and they're not irrelevant. I said I don't have the right to complain about all my stupid problems, like getting too much homework or having to get up too early in the morning, etc. Compared to this, those are nothing. Nobody likes getting too much homework, but it's really not that bad. Some people are in way worse situations than I am, and instead of complaining about these small things, we should be grateful for what we have. For example I often complain about the smallest things, but in reality I have a family, a house to live in, enough food, I can go to school, I don't have to fear for my own or my loved ones' lives, and compared to others I have a really good life. Obviously I have my own problems just like everyone else does, and they do matter, but I shouldn't complain about all those small things that I find slightly uncomfortable. I hope you could understand what I was trying to say and I hope you have a nice day💜)

      ***** China's relations with DPRK is terrible nowadays though, they *really* don't like North Korea's nuclear program, and they certainly don't like how they've been sinking Chinese fishing boats lately. As late as February this year, China withdrew all their remaining investments in DPRK, which only goes to prove that their relations are going down hill. The only "close" ally North Korea has left is Russia.

    • @GLPentAxel
      @GLPentAxel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      ***** They could, but China has never really been interested in doing that kind of stuff, especially not during the late 200 years or so (interior politics is WAAAY more important than foreign politics in China, especially compared to western countries *coughcoughUSA*, but even European countries as well). They certainly wouldn't want to waste an opportunity on getting some great business deals out of it though, that's for sure.

    My friend from school escaped from North Korea when she was two. She made it to the border of China when (according to her mother) she fell down and started crying. Her mother was afraid they would get caught and did what she had to do. She covered her mouth with a napkin until she stopped crying and was on the verge of passing out from lack of oxygen. Her mother then carried her the next 10 miles to people in China who got them on a flight to the US. The flight was to ship dogs to a shelter in Maine. So her and her mother were inside a giant crate holding about ten small puppy dogs, a big bag of food and one of those water bottle things that hamsters have. The flight was 20 hours because they had to stay in the crate for an extra while until it was unlocked. The pilot of the plane (an American) was shocked, but after sharing their story, agreed not to tell anyone. He even gave my friend one of the puppies that didn’t find a shelter. Her mom had a friend in Maine who escaped before and was the one who contacted the people in China to arrange for helping them sneak onto the flight. They lived together a while before my friend and her mom could live by themselves. Now she’s in my school, and everyone loves hearing her story.

    가슴으로 느끼며 시청했습니다...얼마나 힘들었는지 괴로웠는지 감히 말씀드릴수는 없지만 현서님의 용기만은 찬양드리고 싶습니다...기회가 닿는다면 만나뵜고 직접 이야기를 듣고 싶어요...^^ 당신을 진심으로 응원합니다...너무 늦게 이 영상을 시청했지만, 정말 많은 감동과 깨달음을 얻을수 있는 영상입니다. 제 아들 이름도 이현서 입니다...^^
