Everyone insulting him for leaving his friend, he even said he thought he was behind him. If you were in his situation you would have ran for your life too, you wouldn't look back. Besides he suffered enough in that prison he doesn't deserve to be blamed for what unfortunately happened to his friend.

@Israel Wolstein white lies. His stories are somewhat true and not made up, some events are not 100% accurate but the experience was real.
So what's the matter if he lied? Especially if his father is being held hostage back there in North Korea.
You'll come up with other stories too , mixed up events, add or remove details if you are hungry or constantly being tortured.

There’s a book about his story called “Escape from Camp 14” about his story. It’s an incredible but heartbreaking book. Shin talks about how he escaped Camp 14 physically, but not mentally/emotionally. He was literally raised to have no emotion or feeling of love. He says he’s making gradual process and learning what it means to be a human being. I can’t imagine what it’d be like to be in Shin’s shoes, and it just makes me grateful for my upbringing and life. Actually, Shin's story as presented here is not quite true. The story he tells here is the one he told till he came clean in his book 'escape from camp 13'. When he was taken to the underground prison, he knew why. The day before he went to his mum's in the evening and caught her cooking rice for his older brother. He evesdropped on them and gathered, that they wanted to escape. He went to tell a guard because he was so mad his brother got rice and not him and he hoped he could secure a better job in the camp for snitching. That's why he couldn't look her in the eyes.
When he learned about love and the bond between a mum and their children, he felt very ashamed and couldn't tell anyone for a while.
I'm not judging him at all, my heart goes out to him. Just wanted to clear up some confusion.

@@Feedback4Utoday Dude, you're being naive. North Korea is all about obedience, even outside of a prison camp - there are so many interviews with survivors. They don't learn not to inform on family - they are taught it's the right thing. It was the same in Nazi-Germany, kids in the Hitler Youth and BDM were taught to inform on their parents and that this was good and patriotic. Even North Koreans who grew up outside a camp describe that they had a hard time learning to think critically and to make sound judgement and choices - Once they left NK. Because it's not encouraged to put your loved ones over the people in authority. And he grew up in a prison camp where torture, death etc. was a normal part of everyday life.
And honestly, even without all that brainwashing and abuse and torture - I don't want to know how many of us, who grew up learning to understand morality and ethics in theory, would betray our loved ones in a place like that. We cannot even imagine that and quite frankly, we already start treating each other like shit once the toilet paper is out in the supermarket.

@@fallingforfiction8507 This is one of those rare comments I peruse the comment sections for. I find that it's so easy for us to judge from our comfortable homes, as though we are the apex of humanity. People are ignoring the fact that historically, as you've pointed out, extreme conditions can cause extreme responses, even more so for these people who have been indoctrinated into a certain ideology. Reminds me of what I read about similar behaviours under the rule of Mao, where kids in youth groups were encouraged to expose family members who were 'suspicious' to the authorities, and there was the risk of severe consequences if it was discovered that there was reason for suspicion and family didn't reveal it. It's so easy to think " I would never do this or that ", but it has been repeated all over history. Just because we are loathed by certain behaviours doesn't automatically mean we are incapable of committing them ourselves under certain circumstances.

Just imagine: born into slavery and unspeakable brutality, seeing nothing of the kindness and beauty life has to offer, not even understanding that there might be a world outside of his torture... and he and his friend still said, "Let's go. Let's risk our lives to escape this place, because, on a deep level that can never be completely extinguished, we know there has to be something more than this. There has to be somewhere, anywhere, better than this 'life'." The bravery is astounding. The will to live and the chance they took is just incredible. I am so, so sorry his friend didn't make it. But Shin could have just as easily not made it either, so I'm so happy he escaped to find out what life can be about. I hope he can heal and find some peace in this life. I am so disgusted by the government that did this to him, that raised a defenseless baby with these methods, and the countless others this is happening to RIGHT NOW. They WILL answer for their crimes against humanity one day. If you are in North Korea and are somehow reading this, please remember that there are people all over the world who care about you and hope for your freedom to live your life how you want to live it.
I'm not religious, but there is a quote from an animated movie called the Prince of Egypt which depicts slavery in Egypt thousands of years ago. One character says, "Pharaoh has the power. He can take away your food, your home, your freedom. He can take away your sons and daughters. With one word, Pharaoh can take away your very lives. But there is one thing he cannot take away from you: your faith." Whether it is hope, faith, or love, your dictator and the regime can never take away those things in your heart and mind if you don't allow him to. Protect your hope, love, and faith. With Love, from Sarah in the U.S.

      Ben Dover “Powerful”
The only thing powerful about North Korea Is it’s capacity to quickly bombard the South Korean capital of Seoul with their many artillery guns near the DMZ. In addition to that, they could also wreak havoc on Japan.
However, this would be extremely short lived, due to the fact that once they did that, South Korea the U.S. and much of the United Nations would retaliate in overwhelming force akin to that of Operation Desert Storm. It is a deterrent to make the countries listed above think twice because of all the immediate destruction would be invoked should they decide to invade North Korea. While they have to potential to launch ICBMS(Intercontinental Ballistic missile) at most of the globe, they are starting to shut down their Nuclear program due to recent diplomatic events with the Unites States. And to top it all off, their Military is completely made up out of gear/weapons/planes/navy, etc. From the 50s, 60s, 70s, and some 80s things from the USSR before it collapsed.
Just a small history lesson. In short, North Korea isn’t really “powerful” It’s a display of how communism always eventually leads to tyranny, misery and pointless death.

Yes as of now they are backed by China, so if anyone wanted to start anything with Noko they would will also have to deal China. That puts a big wrench into the problem. That would most definitely start WWIII. Millions of lives lost. If that were to happen the opposing side would most definitely need Russia on our side to aid in the fight against Noko.

When you're so hungry that you're willing to pick bits of corn out from cow manure, you'd be forgiven for stooping to ANYTHING to get some food, even "ratting" out someone you don't know beyond the fact that he/she is related to you.
Shin was later forced to alter his story somewhat when North Korea made a news broadcast claiming he was a jailed murderer and threatened to kill his father (who was still imprisoned) if he didn't play along.

    This story isn't entirely real/complete.
This guys reported on his mother n brother to the guards that's why his mother n bother were caught before they managed to carry out their plan.
He did wat he did coz he was never exactly close to his mother n brother, plus his mother loved his brother a lot more than him that was why his mother's and brother's plan to escape the prison excluded him, he found out and of course he was pissed as hell. Furthermore, he also found out his mother hoarded some stolen rice and cooked it for his brother when she thought he didnt know abt the existence of the rice.
All these caused him to report their planned escape to the guards. Also, he was sort of forced to report it coz if he didn't and the their escape was successful, he will be deemed as a co-conspirator as he did not report on it.
After he reported on it he was tortured coz one of the guards took credit for the capture of his mother n brother so he was considered to be a traitor.
After being tortured for a long time he was still saying the same claim that he was the one who reported on his mother and brother, a higher level guard then investigated further and found out that he was the one who deserve to get the credit for the capture.
Afterwards, as reward, he was assigned to do an easier job which is to take care of pigs, guards usually close one eye on those pig keepers who eat pigs feed to fill their stomach.
One day he met a new incoming prisoner who told him abt the outside world and that was why he decided to escape.
When asked if he feels sad now coz his mother n brother r dead, he said not really coz he doesn't really feel love towards them, but, he did mention he feels guilty and remorseful for his action.
Not sure if this guy isn't telling the truth to the reporter, or the reporter knows the truth but since he decided not to report the whole story coz it's deemed too unrespectful to the guy.

      www.blaineharden.com/escape-from-camp-14-reviews/
Somewhere in the article above states that he knows his mom loves his bro more than him and he was never close to his mom.
Abt the fact that wiki said that he was working in the textile, that's the job he was working during the the time when he met another prisoner who gave him the idea to escape together. There should already be a few years gap between the death of his mom and his subsequent escape.
Maybe he got the pig sty keeper job straight after as a reward for informing on his mother, then later on he got transferred to textile? Who knows...There're a lot of videos on TH-cam abt this guy, you'll have to look through it yourself...

@@Dan-lg4bs no one deserves anything, we make all the morality up so we can feel better. Pedophiles are bad for society and children so they should be disposed of quickly. Youre just going to waste space and food and the mental health of guards if you torture them for years

It is amazing the strength of a human being's desire to survive. This man is amazing and the fact that he endured and survived so much and came out intact and sane is miraculous! Much respect to this man! GOD Bless you Sir!

Such a heartbreaking feeling that there are people all over the world, young and older, suffering by corrupt and oppressive regimes. He shouldn't feel regret for his friend, when you live like that you have but one thought on your mind, to be free. I'm sure at the moment of his friends passing, at that brief moment, in his mind, he was free. My deepest heartfelt prayers and thoughts to everyone living in such god awful terrifying and life threatening conditions. God bless every single person who puts themselves at risk to aid, rescue and offer relief and safety to those not in a position to help themselves, there family and friends. You are all truly heroes and doing the work of Angels. Thank all those amazing people who make sure there struggles are known worldwide.
