    This recently came up for me again and I came back to clarify what I meant in the immigrants v African Americans debate. I will always respect and be inspired by the immigrants, especially immigrants of color. But, I’ve come to understand that this is an unfair comparison. We are literally taking the most daring, driven subset of a group (those who are brave enough to move to another country and maybe even have to learn a new language etc etc) and comparing them to an entire group. On the other side, there is never any recognition of the hustle of African American outliers/overachievers. If I talked about the strength of not just Michelle Obama but her hardworking parents or Oprah Winfrey for that matter … everyone would attribute their success to everything else but their African American culture. Sometimes we’re all guilty of confirmation bias… we buy into the narrative that feels familiar (and beneficial) to us. It rings true because it feels good. But, the danger in buying into the “our culture just perpetuates harder working people” narrative is that it all stems from anti-Blackness. Stick with me here. African Americans don’t represent all Black people. But the constant narrative that we are lazy when compared to… everyone else is born out
    of racism. The Asian model minority myth is used to perpetuate the same stereotypes… the thinking goes that if X group can “make it” (even if the group as a whole isn’t achieving at those levels) that’s proof that African Americans are just lazy… and nothing about this racist, capitalistic, patriarchal system needs to change. I even hear wealthy African Americans repeat these beliefs. I’m just the messenger… but I feel compelled to say that you can celebrate the resilience and determination of Black immigrants without putting African Americans down. Your personal observations have meaning but they are just that… anecdotes. What I DO believe is that out of necessity immigrants in America work together more… e.g. intergenerational housing, shared expenses, kids delaying when they leave the home so they can save more, and coordinating duties so members of the family can pursue higher education. I wish working together was more a part of American culture. Rugged individualism is killing us.

    I honestly think the stories about people overworking is a large reason workers are being called back in. 😂

      The real reason is that local businesses are suffering and the value of the office real estate is going down. OE people are a small Minority of people

      @@jackieboy1593that too. And, that’s a real concern as it’s having a real impact on cities. But, I think some companies are reacting to this sense that workers are “getting over/less productive” despite the fact that OE are a small percentage. It’s like AirBnb…. The number of AirBnb units are very small when compared to the larger housing stock. But, the perception that they are a big part of why we have a housing shortage here drives conversations around reform. Perception is everything.
