I've been writing software professionally for over 30 years. About half of my career has been working from home and I currently work for a company that has no office and about 12 or 13 developers and maybe 20 or so total employees. We all work from home and only a few of us even live in the same states. A lot of people have asked me over the years how I stay motivated, frequently commenting that they don't think they could be motivated to work from home. I have one major advantage, which is that writing software is something that started as a hobby for me when I was 10. So I've always really enjoyed what I do for a living, and that's obviously a huge help. But to be clear: Work is still work and I wouldn't choose to write the software I do for work, if I weren't being paid for it. So while I enjoy programming, it's still a job, when it comes to work. That said the primary thing that keeps me motivated is this: I really enjoy working from home. If I want to continue to do it, I have to produce. It's that simple. Failing to produce will cost me what I really enjoy. That's a hefty price to pay, for me. I'd far rather work from home than in an office.
I am just a small voice but I just want to say thank you to Forwago. This program helped me to build self-confidence and taught me how to believe in myself. More people should find out about it. Thank you, Forwago!
Sooo agree with having a working location! This was the change that i didn’t even know i needed for my wfh routine and had a direct impact on my productivity!☺️
Great video! thanks for the information! Especially the pomodoro technique that you mentioned, which i found out about a couple days ago haha. This my first time officially working at home today and it wasn't better than I thought when I considered the fact that my job allows me to stay at home and that I am grateful enough to do so, because some of our heroes are still out there working as I am. Wishing everyone the best and wishing you stay safe in his crisis we got!
I have about 3-4 spots I started working from home at and told my colleagues about it because they noticed the background was different. I did it because I thought it helped me psychologically feel a sense of movement and change, and I know that it is actually recommended! Great tips btw.
First time I've seen someone "currently identify" as introvert or extrovert. The thought of this being a temporary "state of mind" never crossed my mind but it can also make sense, despite being intended as a joke, I think. Any notion that this "personality pack" that you may use to label yourself is temporary is quite liberating.
Awesome education movie! My guess is that working from home might be simpler than it may seem. One solution is so simple that it can be summarized in only 1 phrase. - By offering people an education show, you can build an audience from which some people might be interested in your solution (e.g. for a better health).
I loved this video, I really admire the motivation and drive you have. I really need to change my ways. I'm so unmotivated and currently have no drive and really struggling. It's been over a year and as much as I'm grateful I can work from home I'm absolutely hating it. I'm going to slowly start adjusting some of my ways and just see how I get on. Thank you.
Hey Mike! I just wanted to check in and see how you are doing a year later? I hope you've been able to find structure and purpose because I've noticed I've lost mine lately too. Cheers!
Love this! I work in consulting at a Big 4 firm and just shared a video talking about the stress of job search during these times and what we are seeing in the market as things change so rapidly ✨
Great video, thank you so much for posting it! I started working from home last week (first job in SE and first time working from home during it) and was really struggling to feel as productive as I usually am in the office. This is super helpful and was very timely, going to implement all these tips this week :) !
I feel incredibly fortunate that this is the case. I recognize that I have immense privilege in this situation, and can only feel for those who need to still work today. Y'all: make sure to be extra nice to people at grocery stores, and reach out to friends/neighbors who might be in need during this time. And reach out/look up anything your local/state/federal government might be providing to help with this economic downturn.
You are such an inspiration!! I love watching you, and I've been binging your content since I found you! I'm a cs major pushing through school and it's so much fun watching you!
I agree stick to your normal routine that gives you the structure and balance that is needed. And I do feel that given the current situation with COVID 19 more companies are going to have to rethink remote work for their employees. So I’m on board with working from home.
I've been working from home for the last 5 months and I wish I found your video at the beginning of my smartworking journey. I ended up being very tired, even more tired than when I work from the office. My mental health got worse, basically I didn't do anything of the tips you gave in this video. Thank you for posting this, I'll try to change my habits and follow a routine that fits more the one I usually stick to during office days! PS: I'm currently a video editor, but I've been wondering if I could learn a little bit of coding. I'm absolutely in love with your content, you keep me motivated in starting this new experience

Hi - I've been working from home for ~28 years, from Osaka until the last month (February 2020), and Tokyo from this month. Glad to know you often eat Japanese breakfast! :) BTW I'm not a strict "working for an organization" person (especially since I've got kicked out of the corporate employee status since 2013 and become self-employed from 2014), and I'm trying not to bind myself into a commuting-worker-like mindset at home because it's my HOME (and I'm responsible to how to keep it as an office and the home at the same time). Separating the office zone from the other zones in your home is very important to maintain the distinction. And sometimes you need to use the office zone for yourself, not for your customer/employer/colleagues, because YOU have the control (that's important), so having a physical cover for the webcam connected to your PC, tablet, or smartphone is effective to keep your necessary privacy. Even an ad-hoc one made of the Post-It sticking paper will do. Also muting the microphone is essential when you get connected to Slack, Zoom, or any other teleconferencing system, to reduce the precious bandwidth, and to prevent unnecessary intervention. Also, even if you have to be aware of your customer/employer/colleagues and their working/availability status, allowing some asynchronicity for the communication between you and your colleagues is very important to maintain the sanity because not all jobs have to be in the warzone like a stock exchange. Always prepare the alternative plan if your colleague(s) do not respond immediately. Last of all, especially for keeping yourself focused, open the window(s) and ventilate, at least for a few times a day, to get the fresh air, and to reduce the level of carbon dioxide in the home office. And wash your hands even you're at home too :) Keep it up and stay safe!
I'm using my time to learn Android Studio with xml to develop an app that teaches basic arithmetic to children at a elementary school near me. Thank you for the video! :)
Mayuko ! Finally First time working from home... after requesting for so long, and because of this virus, i got my wish... putting your video on the background is enough to make my day enjoyable and productive... Always stay cool and awesome Mayuko !
Obtaining valuable experience about "Work From Home" from such an experienced software engineer in Silicon Valley highly motivates the amateurs all over the world to be more productive during this crisis!
Uninstalling Facebook from my phone has been helpful in general. I'm definitely working to have my regular work structure. I hope I can have one or two regular days per week working from home after this COVID-19 virus is destroyed. I've luckily worked from home in a different job, so I am one of the lucky many (few?) who has some context as to how to make this work.
Arturo Ordonez-Hernandez I did that too.. Uninstall Facebook and Instagram.. Not swipe to status in whatsapp.. Still my biggest problem it's TH-cam.. 😂

Hi Mayuko! I am working from home too. Most of the time I'm just procrastinate, but after watching this video I always remember that I am going to do things! Thank you for this! Really helps me a lot. :)
There's noone who isn't affected at this point I suppose. I'll be doing homeoffice for probably the majority of time throughout the next month. Our boss already posted a news bulletin that it's also very unlikely that things will go back to normal after this one month - he's very real about the situation which is great. Your tips come at the right time Mayuko :) To me the most important factor is that I get dressed and sit in front of the PC. Biggest change compared to the office is that I don't allow myself to "slack off and browse the web". Doing that at work is fine but at home this would result in too much off-topic time and going back to focus would be much harder. It's all about focus when it comes to working from home after all. Luckily I have an office room so that focus is easier to get to. And since my work setup is a mac (and my usual home/gaming is windows) it's also not too easy to get off of work. Also taking some time to just chat with co-workers is important as well - even if we're not on the same projects. It's gonna be fun to see how the majority of people will cope with home-office, especially those who haven't done it at all before :) On a completely unrelated side-note: you're glowing. Looking absolutely beautiful!
Some good tips in the video, thanks for sharing. Wish I knew about this back in the beginning of Feb as that's when it hit here, was able to learn some of these as the day went by. We are preparing for the second wave of increase, things will get a bit crazy then calm again. Stay safe!

My father is a lecturer. He never did any online class before. Now he is into Zoom or Google Hangouts very much for his class.
Hi Mayuko! I follow you for a while now and I really enjoy watching your videos! Somehow you seem te be so on top of things and when I watch your videos I gain some motivation to get some work done! Keep up the good work! I have two questions: 1: Where did you get your desktop wallpaper from in this video??? I really love it. 2: What are some switch games you can recommend/you enjoy? :D
Hey thanks so much! To answer your questions: 1. I got my wallpaper from backdropstock, it's a drone shot by one of my favorite youtubers Iz Harris: backdropstock.com/collections/izharris and 2. I looved playing Untitled Goose Game! And Overcooked.
My Inspiration on IOS Dev! 😍 Stay Safe.
