Probotector was Contra in Europe. Same game but with robots (probotectors). Glad Konami put them in the game. So far it's a great love letter to Contra.

15:09-15:20 There's a lot of differences between story and arcade modes. Story is cutscene driven with full voice acting, 2 players only, only lets you play as certain characters on certain stages and has a stage select(though it's not tha useful). Arcade mode is 4 players, allows you to use all the characters(along with the ones you can buy in perk shop), removes all cutscenes with dialog and voice acting, actually makes the bosses harder as they gain new attacks that aren't in story mode, and you earn way more credits playing arcade mode.
Story mode is meant to be played only once while arcade is the main mode for the most part as it's where the majority of the game is. And then there are the unlockable extreme modes(that you'll find on the extras menu) that add even more challenge than arcade mode as they are 1CC modes, no perks allowed, adds more enemies on screen, gives bosses more health as in double...and it's quite a challenge.
Original play style would have 1-hit kill enemies too. This is EXTRA hard
@@CFarrell77Um, yes, I know that, I play a lot of these Contra games as well and even 1CC certain ones(like on my channel). Those older games were actually designed and balanced around 1 hit kill from enemies. This game is fine with 1 hit kills on hard in arcade, and it's the most fun difficulty in this game. BTW Extreme forces you to have a health bar while Extreme Ultra has no health bar so 1 hit kills from every enemy.

In older contra games, enemies would die in one hit too though. In this one a soldier takes 3 shots, which makes this mode harder than the original games
Many enemies in this game take multiple hits. Bosses in this game also take a lot more hits than bosses in previous Contra games. Mainly a charged spread shot with certain characters can 1 shot enemies and that's only certain ones.

This is the best Contra since #4 in my opinion, but yeah the enemy tracking is difficult to deal with if you grew up playing OG Contra. I had gotten so used to exploiting the 8-way aim that enemies had on the old games that I couldn't predict the bullets at first in Galuga. That mixed with the loooooong levels made this a rough playthrough for the first 4 levels or so. I also played with the D-Pad so I didn't realize that I also had 360 degree aim for about half of that playthrough either 😩. Some of the bosses have crazy bullet coverage especially after they get pissed off!
Agreed, even though rebirth and uprising were good games I’ll say this one is better than both, definitely the best since 4
It's funny because it's by the same devs who made Contra 4. But yeah despite it's flaws I enjoy Operation Galuga a lot as well.

"Probotector" was the name of the Contra games here in Europe,
at least for the NES and SNES versions,
in which the main human characters were changed to robots,
because shooting humans was somehow too gory i guess.....

Played the demo for this (on Steam, the Switch version was literally unplayable because there was stuttering and it had like 2 seconds of input delay) and really enjoyed it, despite some jank. I wanna play it for myself before I check out your vids on it.

I'll give you that: spread and homing are usually the best weapons. We're usually just killing mobs, and they are great for that (homing CAN screw you up tho, since you can't really aim, sometimes that one fucking alien can get to you).
But for me, playing as Bill:
Flamethrower is great for bosses and for the last 2 levels in general, especially because I don't do this constant weapon switch thing. It's strong as hell.
The C weapon (what is it called?) on lvl2 is SO good for some specific bosses (like the final boss). Those two homing lasers that the robot skeleton boss shoots at you get sucked into the black holes. And the lvl 6 mid-boss is a LOT easier with the black holes (the guy with the shield).
The Machine gun is just a shield for me lol
Laser lvl2 is awesome too for crowd control, as it ricochets between enemies.
The other characters in the perk shop ca REALLY change how you play the game, since a lot of their weapons and/or overloads are different.

The 9 to 11 years-old me back then never actually finished Contra, or Super Contra, so don't feel so bad if it's difficult. (I still haven't finished those games to this day, however, I don't quite have that sort of patience anymore... not that I had it even back then to be honest, which is probably why I never finished them)

Fine, I can understand that. Btw I am a completionist so would like to see everything, and if theres anything hidden even better, I love that particular aspect of a game, I dont think this one has it though.

If I was the designer, this game would look like this in hard mode :
-no level 2 strength of weapons
-turrets,enemy soldiers and some bosses must fire instantly and with multiple bullets everywhere
-only 1 hit kill option
No level 2 weapons would be hilarious as it's designed for the game just like Contra 4. But hard is not even close to the hardest difficulty as if you really want the most challenge in this game then just try Extreme Ultra, it's 1 hit kill only, forced 1CC, no perks, more enemies on screen and bosses have way more health, like double the amount. But yeah I wished they went for enemies and bosses attacking faster just like Contra 3 instead as that would had been better than what we got here.
If you let go of the shoot button you can see more of the screen. You’re making it a bullethell yourself. The enemy bullets come slow af. But you can’t dodge cause youre shooting bullets everywhere and can’t see the enemy bullets til its too late. This game is easy af
With a health bar and perks it can be easy. On 1 hit kills and the extreme modes it's not easy.

Hard is not even close to the hardest mode, that is Extreme Ultra and you have to unlock it in the perk shop.

It’s worth it if you think you’re gonna play the hell out of it, do challenges, etc. But if you’re only gonna blast through Story mode once, then maybe not worth the price

i heard there's an harder mode to unlock after hard where you restart the whole game if you die, no continues (brutal), with 1 hit, at least perks are good, the main muscle guy have a special one who is invincible every start of his dash, could abuse on that
If you are talking about Extreme Ultra then that mode has limited lives just like arcade but doesn't allow perks either, yes, you have to play it with no perks since there's no option for that. Not only is it 1 hit with no continues it also adds more enemies on screen and give bosses double amount of health. Though you have to unlock Extreme 1st in order to get Extreme Ultra. But yeah I use 360 aim for this game only.

For a 1CC he's going to need level 2 crush, homing and possibly spread(and maybe at times flame) to have a chance to do 1 hit kill on hard.

@@ryushorts Yea, they are both 1 CC modes with perks turned off I believe and even spongier bosses, more aggressive enemies, etc. The thing thats shitty is they are 15,000 each I believe which is very grindy to unlock both extreme modes. I think one is with health bar and one is without, but both are 1 CC.
Great video, look forward to the next one. Working on Hard 1 hit death mode with perks on and Stage 6 is still tough.

You do the code during when the C comes up before the title screen and you buy the lives in the perk shop.

In a way, yes. If you enter the Konami code when the big "C" is forming during the title screen you unlock a perk in the shop that grants you 30 lives when equipped. It costs 7500 credits I believe.

I been playing it on steam since day one...no issues with controls. It always played perfectly for me.

True, as on Extreme/Extreme Ultra bosses have way more health than the story and arcade modes so it would be nice to see how much health they have.

It is good but it has issues, especially on switch. Aside from the bugs in the switch version the issues I have is there is just no predicting enemy patterns. For instance with past Contra games, sure they were very hard, but the more you played the better you would get. Every boss you would gradually learn there patterns and be able to conquer them wiithout dying(eventually). Im just not getting that here, i`m over 20 hours deep and it just isnt clicking with me like past contra games. And I`m a contra veteran. I can beat Contra 3 on hard with no deaths, ive been playing it since the 90s. But enemies and bosses here are just all over the place. Secondly the visibility is a problem, you often die because you cant see enemy bullets, and you also die because the controls are just not up to par, its very awkward and floaty feeling. Seriously play this for a few hours and then throw on contra 3 alien wars right afterrwards and you`ll see what I mean. The story mode is also awful, a lllot of meaningless dialogue and new characters that just suck. Even all of the unlockable characters from contra hardcorps suck because all of there weapons are changed and they control very awkward, especially Fang. I appreciate it because it stays true to the contra formula, but it was not done correctly in terms of enemy spawnage and difficullty. Its all just very unbalanced and it desperately neeeds a patch to address these issues. When I`m dying because I cant see shit and because of shitty controls and unpredictable boss attacks its a prob for me......lol and yeh the challenge mode with the big alien atop the waterfall, you gotta shoot his head and nothing but. If you stay underneath his head and follow him it will cause him to repeat his attacks most of the time. I beat that in less then a minute
Yeah Switch version is the worst. I agree with you about past Contra games when it comes to patterns as once you understand it and see it coming you can learn and dominate the games. Bosses in Operation Galuga have pretty much no patterns(besides the few bosses in the 1st 2 stages) so it's random for what they do and they have so much more health than bosses in past games that you need weapon swapping(which you can do in Contra 3) to kill them quickly.
I'm also a Contra veteran. Been playing many of the games, even 1CC certain ones and did no death on Contra 3(on hard) as well. I personally have no issues with the controls in this game(though I'm on PC). As for unlockable characters, yeah Sheena is the worst and Fang is only good with homing, but Browny is actually amazing to use. He has the best mobility out of any character in this game(literally the only character with a triple jump) and his homing is one of the strongest weapons in the game as it wrecks enemies and most bosses.
I agree 100% with you about this game being unbalanced. It's why I wouldn't be surprised if it gets patched later on. Like this game has the spirit of Contra but it definitely needs work in several areas to improve upon it. I still prefer the older(good) Contra games to it.

@@mitu123Copper The patterns and learning how to best tackle bosses and situations was part of the genius and fun of the old games. They got it right with part 4, not sure what happened here.
lol I actually didnt even bother with Browny, after being disappointed with Sheena and Fang, figures hes the best one. Will have to try......its a shame really, cus to be fair the game is good and fun. Its just lacking that lil bit of magic that made the older games good. The lack of online coop was also a huge wtf for me. Its the perfect game for that.

They never overstayed their welcome and once you perfected it it was amazing for how you can take them down. Contra 4 did it just like the games before it which made it really feel special as a Contra game and it's one of my favorites and considering it's by the same devs it makes it odd.
For Operation Galuga they decided to give them more health than they need(and it's worse on the extreme difficulties as they get double amount of health) and go for unpredictable attacks which is a double edge sword. I get they wanted to do something different and make each encounter unique but it's not always designed well, can throw off your strategies against them since they may not always do what you expect them to do, can't always read what they will do and it does ruin the pacing with overlong fights than should had been done in under 2 minutes.
I would argue Browny is the best character in this game. Having dash, grapple and triple jump makes him viable for any situation and makes certain sections that can be a challenge much easier. He has the same spread shot as most characters along with crush and his homing like I mentioned is one of the most damaging weapons in the entire game.
It definitely needs online co-op as you said, and considering it's 4 players it makes it more odd. I hope they patch that in.

It's there to enter at the beginning, but to use the 30 lives requires a perk that unlocks after a bunch of grinding for points.
It has the Konami code, 30 lives and all.
It wasn't really that hard the problem is is that it becomes like Doom eternal where enemies are coming out of nowhere and you have to quickly react and I just don't want to put my controller through the pain the first three missions were fun after that it just became a mess and very boring and frustrating so I just deleted it it was not a hard game but I'm not going to waste my time trying to beat a game that I'm not having fun with
First off, and I know this is gonna be hard for you, but you have to take your time in this mode. 2nd, you need to make use of your weapon abilities all the time

It depends if you go for 1CC, health bar or 1 hit kill, perks or no perks, difficulties like hard, extreme and extreme ultra(both extreme difficulties 100% require 1CC with no perks along with adding more enemies and way too much health on bosses), etc.
