Ok, so I am a new viewer so I don't know if your guys to this or not, but httyd doesn't just have the 3 movies. Infact most of the trilogy is in other things, the list is:
      1. How To Train Your Dragon
      2. Legend of the boneknapper (short film)
      3. Gift of the nightfury (short film)
      4. Riders of berk (20 episode animated series)
      5. Defenders of berk (another 20 episode series)
      6. Dragon racing (short film)
      7. race to the edge seasons 1-6 (each with 13 episodes)
      8. How To Train Your Dragon 2
      9. How To Train Your Dragon The Hidden World
      10. Httyd Homecoming (final short film)
Again I don't know if you guys will react or not but I wanted to point out because watching all of this really gives you to full picture about httyd, especially Hiccup and Astrid's relationship and how it progressed. Even if you don't react I would suggest watching all these, the rest is up to you

    A few details to hate/enjoy:
    - Valka and Astrid are the only 2 characters seen running on dragons mid-air
    - the stick Drago uses is based on a tool used for elephant taming. It is used to abuse them while they are young so they stay scared of it. This is likely how Drago manages to indimidate such a massive dragon.
    - When Stoic and Valka are together during the battle, the soundtrack is their love song.
    - During the race in the end, Hiccup catches the black sheep before Astrid does, but he puts it in her basket.

Their reunion is so human, i love it. She feels guilty ( rightfully ) for not even trying to reconnect with her husband, people and first and foremost infant son. She wants to be justified in her feelings because of the sudden confrontation she avoided for years. And then there is that big hairy ignorant fool of a man, unable to do anything like that. He just sees the love of his live which he thougt lost forever. Im sure he feels some form of confusion and even anger, but its all burried under the pure love he feels for her.

I always appreciate when animated movies don't always go for the "The villain can be reasoned with" trope. It's important for kids to understand that not everyone can be reasoned with and that peace isn't always an option. Like Alfred said, some men just wanna watch the world burn.

    • @jgaringan
      @jgaringan หลายเดือนก่อน +20

Yup, the line "Men who kill without reason, cannot be reasoned with" really should have gotten more attention in the narrative. Hiccup was too naive to realize and accept that Stoick had PERSONALLY witnessed Drago MURDER the other clan chiefs; had he taken the time to think from his father's point of view, he would have realized that Drago was already a war criminal and needed to be treated as such.

I love how Toothless breaking the Alpha's tusk is an act of mercy. His mouth was wide open: he could have fired a blast in it and killed him like he did the Red Death in the first movie, but he actively spares him: but leaves him with a permanent mark and reminder to never mess with Toothless or his friends, ever again.

The thing about drago is that the weapon he wields is called a bull hook. Essentially it was used by people to “”train”” elephants and not the good type of train. They’d do this when the elephant was younger and once it grew up it would still be afraid of it. Presumably since Drago raised his bewildrbeast from birth he used the same method.

John Powell started off as a protégé of Hans Zimmer, which totally makes sense and the influence in the score so apparent.

DreamWorks is truly such a good movie production company. Djimon Honsou did a great job with his voice over acting in this one as Draco. This film is such an emotional rollercoaster... from Hiccup finding his mother, to his father and mother reuniting, to losing his father. I think that this film may be better than the first. Not many films do that. Awesome reaction! ❤

Let me tell you how John Powell made some of the scores for the HTTYD franchise.
At the beginning of the first movie, we are literally introduced to the main themes of the entire franchise. The theme of the Vikings, the theme of Hiccup and the theme of Astrid all within the first 5 minutes. However except for one and that is Toothless’s theme because we are not people introduced to him yet. And the reason why his theme isn’t introduced is because at the point of the movie, Toothless is an outsider and not part of Berk. YET!
Now Hiccup’s theme is the first part of ‘This Is Berk’ which is the first music you hear in the beginning of the movie before the dramatic music begins. Toothless’s theme, well we all know. But of these characters’ theme play when we are learning about them for the first time. Hiccup, at the beginning, and Toothless’s is during the training montage but when Hiccup and Toothless achieve how to fly together, John puts both of their themes together in the score called TEST DRIVE. As Hiccup and Toothless start to synchronize, so does the music.
In the beginning it’s very slow because Toothless and Hiccup are still getting used to it but until Hiccup throws away to cheat sheet, we and see hear both of these characters come together.
Now in various scores, we hear the use of Bagpipes. Now why bagpipes? Well in John Powell’s case, bagpipes are played to represent an unexpected event. For example, when Toothless confronts Hiccup in the forest, we hear bagpipes playing and the most likely scenario was for Toothless to kill Hiccup but surprisingly, he doesn’t. In the second movie, when Drago calls his Bewilderbeast to take over Toothless, bagpipes play throughout the entire score called “Hiccup Confronts Drago” and this is where Stoick dies which is completely unexpected.

4:58 Toothless at the start was creating makeshift thermals (warm rising air) to help Hiccup gain height. That's what hang gliders use to stay in the air for hours upon hours. Drago was voiced by the, "not yet" guy from Gladiator.

Now you understand why Stoick was so adverse to dragons in the first movie. He thought they killed his wife and nearly took his only, premature child’s life. Valka confirms that Hiccup was a premature baby, and Stoick having already lost his wife thought we was going to lose Hiccup as well.
His hate for them in movie 1 is far more understandable given the context of this movie.
    3:50
Skullcrusher, Stoick’s dragon is a tracker class dragon. He can track down anything he gets the scent of. Stoick had him smell Hiccup’s mask when they found it.

Funnily enough, in a number of talks, the Dragons all have a different chemical element to their breaths. Stormfly has an incredibly hot one with her Magnesium, Hookfang is Napalm, Barf throws out Methane Oxide Gas, while Toothless breaths Oxyacetaline Charges. Would be why he's glowing blue, with his body super oxygenated, turbocharging and Superheating him.

What Ari mentions at the end pretty much sums it up. Having good writing, music and voice acting combined with the animators animating in "cinematic" ways is what makes it as real as "normal" movies. We resonate and feel with these characters cuz they're just as "real" as Frodo, Ripley or Captain(!) Jack... They just look a bit different.
I seriously hope you check out more of the animated repertoire. In case you read and care for this comment and are interested in doing so plus haven't seen them yet here's some recommendations:
    Disney/Pixar: Luca, Encanto, Moana, Soul
Dreamworks: Kung-Fu Panda series, Rise of the Guardians

It's not directly mentioned in this movie, but the first film's large dragon is an alpha. That's why the others brought all the fish to it. It was issuing them commands. Notice the sound that you hear when the Alpha is sending his signals is the same sound when Toothless discovers the dragon island in the the first movie.
I love the risks they took in this film though. Having Stoic sacrifice himself for his son right after being reunited with his wife after twenty years is such a gut-punch.

The Last Unicorn is one of the most amazing animated movies I've ever seen, Christopher Lee, Mia Farrow and Jeff Bridges are some of the voice talents and they are a big part in making the movie as magical as it is.
