- Steph watches Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl for the first time. Based on the popular Disneyland ride, a cunning pirate and a resourceful blacksmith join forces to rescue the governor's kidnapped daughter and uncover a legendary curse that has doomed a crew of undead buccaneers to sail the seas forever.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was directed by Gore Verbinski (Rango, The Ring, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest). The main cast includes Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald) as Captain Jack Sparrow, Orlando Bloom (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Troy, Kingdom of Heaven) as Will Turner, Keira Knightley (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, The Imitation Game) as Elizabeth Swann, Geoffrey Rush (Shine, The King’s Speech, Quills) as Captain Hector Barbossa, Jack Davenport (The Talented Mr. Ripley, Kingsman: The Secret Service, The Morning Show) as Commodore James Norrington, and Jonathan Pryce (Brazil, Tomorrow Never Dies, The Two Popes) as Governor Weatherby Swann. The film blends swashbuckling adventure, supernatural mystery, and witty humor, launching one of the most iconic franchises in modern cinema.

Not to dilute Depp's performance but Geoffrey Rush was the personification of Capt. Barbossa.
So many amazing characters with amazing performances. Truly lightning in a bottle, this movie!
Both of them owed those roles🔥🔥
I agree. Barbossa is even my favourite character. His aura, the way he talks, facial expression and relationship with little monkey 😊👍🏾
He is the only actor that even tried to personify that character, so he wins by default
No because like Jack was an amazing character but he also had a serious guilty composition...Barbosa is the BEST pirate in the series 😮
I absolutely DO NOT care what anyone says, Johnny Depp was and IS the only actor who can effectively give Captain Jack Sparrow his piratey swagger.
Na
I agree Depp is a pirate every other are swashbucklers.
Exactly, it’s just like having someone other than Jim Carrey be Ace Ventura or something like that.
@@jip5889 That's a really good comparison of iconic performances.
Agreed
I am SO glad you guys are starting this series. Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow is by far in my opinion one of the greatest roles ever played in movie history
Captain...CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow.
Yes, there should be a Captain somewhere. 😅
CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow.
And I am thrilled that it is Acharra and Steph. I LOVE this combo!!!!
It should've been Hugh Jackman ☹️
"so it would seem" line delivery is soooo good ❤
Several in my family use it whenever it works for a reply…and trying to imitate Norrington to boot.
28:33 fun fact, speaking of oxygen, Orlando bloom actually became so deprived of oxygen while filming this scene he forgot where he was and he started speaking elvish from the lord of the rings.
Please tell me there’s footage of this
Many years ago, when I heard they were going to make a movied based off my favorite ride at Disneyland, I swore to myself that someway, somehow, I would find a way to be in it. Two years later, I talked my way into an audition (they were looking for skinny, long-haired pirates and I was clearly neither), got called back three trimes and was finally cast as one of Jack Sparrow's crew. @40:29 I'm the large, bald guy standing to Zoe Saldaña's (Anamaria's) right. We filmed for a few months at the studio in California, but we finished up by shooting in the Caribbean for six weeks in January and February of 2003.
KIt was easily one of the best experiences of my life.
P.S. I also made it into the third movie, but as another character altogether.
I just love how almost all reaction channels claim to watch first time totally mainstream movies.
And i also love how they all seem to have the same patrons ( L ) who keep asking for the same movies ( that are mostly mainstream movies )
Elaborate which character you was in movie 3.
@@tanelviil9149 why would you "love" that?
@@tanelviil9149 What does this have to do with Firefax's comment?
@@tanelviil9149 just because something is considered mainstream doesn't mean everyone has watched it already. Don't try to be smarter here by implying that everyone who watches a "mainstream" movie in the internet is faking it. Especially as a reply to a comment that has literally 0 relation to yours. You are embarassing yourself.
no, the real reason was that she thought if they knew elizabeth is daughter of a governor, she thought they'd keep her as a hostage so that's why she lied about her last name
never understood why people have a go at Norrington here, he's the perfect gentleman, competent, diligent, dutiful, not cruel or petty, even to his enemies, admits his mistakes and shows grace in failure. The absolute hero of this film.
he's like 30 and knew her as a child. the vibes are off
It's because he was a grown ass men, knew Elizabeth and waited for her to become 18 then proposed to her. It's disgusting
Having these opinions about historical people is ridiculously silly in my opinion. Here in America, 13 and 14 years olds were being married less than a hundred years ago. I have heard historians say over and over that we can’t hold people from the past to our current standards, because that just does not make sense.
The fact that he even waited til she was grown in this time period is pretty commendable I would say, as most in a position of power would have taken her at a much younger age.
We know it’s wrong today, and certainly some people did back then as well, but holding that sort of judgment means you probably would consider EVERY single person back then to be a “weirdo” or something if you judged how they behaved on today’s standards. Which, like I said, would just be dumb.
It's probably the age thing. Curiously, in-universe he's only a few years older than Elizabeth. He was a very young prodigious officer, not even 18 during the first scene if I recall correctly. They probably should've chosen another actor to play him during that first introduction to the character.
Norringtons sword is a cool character of its own sorta. Watching it switch from person to person it’s different owners over the years. And tbh he’s creepy tho he met Elizabeth when she was like 6-8 and couldn’t wait to wife her up at like 16-18. I know it was more normal then but still weird since he knew her well as a child
Commodore Norrington is my beloved favorite. Even if I'm alone in this fan club, I'll always adore him. A good, honorable man!
You should check out the British sitcom called "Coupling". I think it came out like in the early 2000s. Jack Davenport, who plays Norrington, was one of the main characters there.
Also a very minor character in The Talented Mr. Ripley.
Youre right he was in that @@5thPhoenix
I’m a fan of Norrington as well.
I absolutely love Norrington as well, I would choose him over Orlando Bloom everyday.
"Right, the boat just blew up by itself." Accidental magazine Explosions were definitely a thing that could sink a ship in the age of sail.
Still can nowadays.
"Nothing ever happens."
Norrington basically says as much during the scene, they just weren't paying attention 😂
Black powder only took one slip up or forgotten oil lamp
Elizabeth: I had a dream about you last night.
Steph and Achara, synced: Ohh!
😄
😂😂💦💦💦
No one can ever replace Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow. He's the main reason the movies are as successful as they are
Captain
😂
Absolutely! Johnny brought the character to life. I have never seen a pirate movie with such popularity and Fandom. Perhaps the greatest thing about Johnny as Captain Jack is when he wasn't filming, he visited children's hospitals in character.
1:12:33 -- Fun Fact, "Privateers" are pirates who have been given a commission by a Crown head of state in the form of a letter of marque, which makes their acts of piracy legal for economic warfare purposes.
Additional fun fact: The term "Privateer" never fell into disuse, and was comandeered (pun) into refering to shipping magnates and larger merchant companies who had letters of marque (all the big succesful traders were smugglers and engaged in piracy when they couldn't secure enough to import on return), and is the origin of the term "private sector", when all the big name pirateers (pun) gathered and took over markets, legally or otherwise.
The thing to me about this whole thing is that it was a ride at Disneyland with no story to go along with it. They did an amazing job at creating something like this out of something like that
I think they also bring that tone. The movie is absolutely a story driven amusement park ride. The scene where Elizabeth learns about the curse and the way she's carried off really hits that vibe for me.
Fun fact Johnny Depps wearing dark contacts to protect his eyes from the Suns glare and to not squint when performing.
it doesn't seem like any of the actors ever squinted. so did they all wear them or just Depp? and what was his reason for not wanting to squint?
@@Mikeonthemic80 I don't know the answer to the first question, but isn't the second obvious? Squinting isn't exactly a good look in a performance, unless you're _supposed_ to be squinting.
Captain Jack Sparrow is one of the greatest movie characters ever, no one could play him but Depp
I'm SO GLAD y'all are watching these movies. I'm here for all of them. Definitely one of my favorite trilogies and probably one of my most quotable movies I've ever seen.
The first three pirates movies are pure cinema in my eyes. Perfectly shot, written, and they age like fine wine.
Fun fact: corsets in Elizabeth’s time were not dangerous. Corsets were constructed to fit an individual woman’s body exactly, and metal eyelets hadn’t been invented yet, so you couldn’t attempt to tightlace without ripping the garment. Also, you couldn’t wear an 18th century gown without one (there was so much fabric, you NEEDED the support). Corsets were basically just bras with front and back support. Corsets today are much more dangerous, because they’re made to accommodate one set body shape, and aren’t often customized.
Thanks for pointing that out! I get always so mad when people think corsets were only worn because of "oppression" etc.
I honestly think this film makes the very exclusive cut into the list of perfect movies
This is not on that list and it's definitely not perfect.
One of the things I loved about this movie is that they trusted the audience to remember the rules of the coins and the blood and the chest in the final confrontation. Barbossa told the story to Elizabeth early on, then we saw them try to break it with her blood, then Elizabeth and Will talked about it so he understood, then Barbossa and his crew were prepared to use Will’s blood, and by the time Jack stole the coin the writers were like, this has been said enough, we can trust the audience to follow along without words.
Lots of people still manage to not get it 😂 But I'm still glad the filmmakers didn't over-explain it.
1:15:24 “people not liking pirates was such a unique twist”
lol you know what pirates did for a living right? 😂
I just love how almost all reaction channels claim to watch first time totally mainstream movies.
And i also love how they all seem to have the same patrons ( L ) who keep asking for the same movies ( that are mostly mainstream movies )
@@tanelviil9149 What does this have to do with AL's comment?
For real, like what bizarro world are they living in that they expected the pirates to be liked and respected members of wider society 😂
35:27 Guys look at Barbossa's watching Elizabeth while she's eating.. Because he doesnt feel or taste anything.. He wonder how it feels.. :))
Yeah, he's trying to live vicariously through her in that moment. He's been cursed so long he can't remember it anymore.
At some point in time, he was a human who could eat and drink. I'm sure he knows, and craves it!
Steph: He probably just reeks of whisky…
Me: Rum!
Steph: Or rum!
🤣❤️
Not OCD. Every craftsman knows exactly where his tools are. Anytime I used my dad's tools, he explicitly told me to put them back where I got them.
Tools are an extension of both the craftsman and his craft, honor thy tool, keep it clean, keep it rigid.
Someone saw me arranging the stack of bus schedules I have to carry around in my backpack, making sure I had them all. She commented on how organized I am.
If I don't keep track, I lose stuff.
A workman has to keep track of the condition of the tools. Even if a shop looks scattered about, they know where everything is.
@@JFrazer4303 I'm the same way. I have to keep organized or I'll lose stuff. ADHD is at b@#$% sometimes. 🤣
Orlando Bloom is so...omg.
I could've sworn this channel had already started watching the Pirates Of The Caribbean movies. But keep going!
How has this movie not been reviewed yet by Cinepals? It’s a classic.
I think it has, but by other members. I don't remember which ones though. And it was probably a good yr or 2 ago.
Franchise doesn't get the respect it deserves. Wait till you meet Davy Jones... if they had stopped at the third would be elite trilogy
Geoffrey Rush was such a crucial backbone to the series
This movie is the only movie I've seen in the theaters twice. Back to back. Went with mom, and as we were walking out we both said we had to see it again. Soooo. We did. Immediately. Just bought tickets for the next show and another bucket of popcorn.
The next two are decent, but there's something so special about this one.
Best duo on cinepals!!
I really like the character of Governor Swann. It's obvious, and it becomes more so in the sequels, that his main concern regarding his daughter, is her happiness.
13:46 I've seen this scene countless times, and I never noticed that the clanging of the swords is in beat with the music. 😀
I'm glad you started on this franchise. I can't wait to see the rest.
Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow is the best!!! Love the character and he plays it perfectly. Funny that he stole the spotlight when the character was only meant to be a side character initially.
Johnny Depp was nominated for an Oscar & a Golden Globe for this movie.
This film is honestly one of those I can watch any time day or night. And honestly even while you guys are watching I am still quoting. Amazing.
I really like how the commodore is introduced as kind of this unlikeable character but he is actually very kind.
The entire franchise is fun and awesome.
Thank god Johnny Depp did not get cancelled for drinking A Mega Pint of Red Wine🙏💪
Zoe Saldaña’s agent is a wizard. Pirates, Star Trek, MCU, Avatar? Only thing missing on her major franchises tour is Star Wars 😄
Star wars, harry potter, lotr. She's in everything else haha
I think her agent lost his magic considering the 💩 she’s in now.
Karl Urban's agent...
"Hold my beer, ...mate"
Or DCU since James Gunn is running everything.
@@AcT403 Lol, true, but give it time!
The fun thing obout this movie is, that it is basically the film handbook of creating comedy worked through chapter by chapter. When I was at iuniversity studying film the professor, that I had in the "humor in fim" seminar went through all the common ways creating comedy in movies and showed an example for every way in this particular movie, plus it is basically the Disney theme part ride turned into a film. It is amazing how a film, constructed of a static blue print like this one , can feel so organic and fun. Hans Zimmer's music helped a lot, of cause and Johnny Depps performance also carried a lot of the movie, too (alongside all the other great performers). He designed the look and mannerisms of Jack on his own, the studio actually asked him to tone it down, they where afraid he would ruin the movie. He did not 🤣
The introduction of Captain Jack Sparrow is one of the greatest in all cinema. I will fight you on this.
No spoilers, but once you find out CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow's backstory and why he became a pirate, you'll love him even more!!!!
This series likes to play with the idea of "what's law vs what's right" and how not everything is just black and white; there are tons of grey areas.
It really make you realize how much the music adds to these movies when you watch a reaction where you often can't hear it. Haha. :)
Imagine not being able to be romantically involved with someone because you're aware that they were once a child in the past.
Not to mention that Norrington would likely have been a teenager himself when he's first introduced. They started them young in the navy those days. Not like there's some massive age gap to begin with.
@@austin0351 yeah I always thoght Elizabeth was 12-15 and Norrington was 17-20 at the beginning of the movie.
There will be no better actor than Johnny Depp and we will all know him as Captain Jack Sparrow
One of the Greatest Trilogy ever!
Some ppl crap on the last movies of this series but as a whole, it's a great fun series & imo they're all worth watching.
I stopped after At World's End. Are the last 2 worth seeing?
There was a question that was very hard to answer; How do you make an awesome action movie, based on a very slow moving Disney ride?
Well, thanks to Johnny Depp, Jerry Bruckheimer and a lot of amazing and memorable scenes, this pretty much answered that question and even turned it into an entire franchise.
You realize that many of the amazing and memorable scenes in this movie are direct recreations of and/or based upon scenes from the ride itself? Also, Disney's dark rides weren't like anything else at the time, every other amusement park was just cheap Coney Island junk with minimal theming and not really any rhyme or reason to the scenes used. POTC, Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise and others that debuted at Disneyland actually had plotlines (also called "backstories"), heavy thematic elements, and depth to them, which is why they were easier to translate into a film. Theme parks as we know them today (Universal Studios, Six Flags, Cedar Point, Sea World, Busch Gardens, Lego Land, etc) wouldn't be a thing if not for the opening of Disneyland in 1955. We'd still associate that term with dingy, dirty "carny"-type affairs like Coney Island.
CinePals, please do The 13th Warrior, probably one of my favorites and one of the best underappreciated films ever.
No Johnny no pirates and this proves it
That makes no sense.
Hans Zimmer composed all of the Pirates movies except the 5th movie Dead Man's Chest.
A lot of the film was shot in the island of St Vincent and the Grenadines
One of the best movie ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊

This exchange is fun to look back on when you get the reveals later.
1. "They're here for you... youre the Governor's daughter!" Elizabeth's lady-in-waiting surmised that Elizabeth herself was the prize as a person of importance that could be ransomed. Elizabeth assumed the same thing so chose another last name in her introduction... that of a lowly craftsman, not nearly important enough to hold for ransom. But she chose Turner obviously because he's always on her mind.
2. Unfortunately for Miss Swann, the name Turner has a high importance and when Barbossa asks about the coin/medallion being an heirloom, its because Barbossa is surmising Elizabeth must be related to Bill Turner, who he'd need (or his offspring). When Elizabeth denies stealing it, that confirms it for Barbossa, so her abduction is now sealed.
3. So Elizabeth, not being privy to the pirates' motives, doomed herself. Ironically, had she claimed to be Elizabeth Swann, Barbossa likely would have thrown her overboard so she could swom back to shore. Afterall, women aboard ships (which were not passenger liners, which didnt exist as such then) were seen as bad luck: theyd not have kept her on without a pressing reason, and Barbossa wasnt interested in delaying his mission to wait for a ransom payment.
So the irony of picking THAT name to escape being a captive, only for it to be the REASON she was held captive... is delicious writing.
One of my best Johnny Depp movies.Keira Knightley,Elizabeth brings Emma Watson's personality kinda.Seriously Johnny Depp for this role should be candidate for Oscar, nobody could play Jack Sparrow better than him.Still i can't believe that Depp hadn't candidate for an Oscar, less talented actors have won and not he,which has played more difficult roles from others.Depp, the movie itself with the costumes the whole project should be candidate in Oscars, pity.
This movie has no villain. Just characters with agendas. No one inherently evil.
WHY is the rum gone!?
One of the best lines in film 😄
Glad you're watching the series, but sadly, some of the best moments are edited out of this reaction. For example, the best moment from Barbossa and Elizabeth's first interaction, see below, is missing.
Elizabeth: Captain Barbossa , I am here to negotiate the cessation of hostilities against Port Royal .
Barbossa: There are a lot of long words in there, Miss; we're naught but humble pirates. What is it that you want?
Elizabeth: I want you to leave and never come back.
Barbossa: I'm disinclined to acquiesce to your request. Means "no".
I just found out Achara is 40 years-old. NO WAY.
If you want to see more of Johnny Depp as jack Sparrow being awesome then look up when he went to a children’s hospitals as jack sparrow.
The first Pirates of the Carribean movie is freakin brilliant. Awesome characters, great character moments and just a super fun movie all-round. :)
Love this movie. :)
Jack Sparrow, our favorite functioning drunk.
This franchise took me by surprise. And I even love 2&3.
This is/has to be one of the best movies of all time. Top 5-10.
If I remember correctly, Kristen was one of the mermaids in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. It would be fun to react that movie with her.
No way! I have to look up that scene now
That's got to be the worst pirate I have ever seen 😂 Achara's impression
Orlando Bloom was in 2011 The Three Musketeers movie! However, he played the Duke of Buckingham 1:09:30
They say a movie is only as good as it's cast. This movie is excellent.
i love the sword-work in these movies. S-tier and never forced. the fight evolves naturally. the D&D movie (honor among thieves) also did this well with Michelle Rodriguez.
this franchise is one of the first to put post credit scenes in every movie
When they were about to do this, a lot of people were raising their eyebrows at the idea that you could make a movie out of just a short Disneyland ride that didn't have any story at all! But they did incredible with this.
I wore those movie out and then we played the theme song in band the same yr I was so fricken hype 😂😂 one of my favorite movies ever and definitely my fave Johnny Depp role. This brought back so many memories
Love the shirt, Steph.
The 2nd Disney theme park attraction to become a film following The Country Bears (2001).
1 of 2 Disney films based on theme park attractions released in 2003, the other was The original Haunted Mansion.
1 of 2 films in the same year that starred the incomparable Johnny Depp.
I never would've thought myself that something that was a ride could be a film.
Pirates on film in any form, even in tone could be fun and adventurous as they should be.
The direction, writing, scope, scale and then some to most people reinvented the summer blockbuster.
The cast all around is great.
Almost every kind of character you would expect in a genre like this.
But Johnny Depp, an actor's actor is incomparable with CJS as his biggest role and in the biggest film of his career at the moment, winning several awards plus an first-ever Oscar/Golden-Globe (Best Actor) nominations for his performance.
Please continue on with the 4 sequels.
They're lengthy films, but all are still exciting to watch.
My best of list:
Curse of the Black Pearl
At World's End
Dead Man's Chest
Dead Men Tell No Tales
On Stranger Tides (I thought it was impossible to make a boring POTC movie and they did it)
Its supposed to be Port Royal which is in Jamaica
shocking amount of people not understanding, or recognizing, the grenade pirate as the one he hit in the back with an axe.
Johnny Depp is my favorite actor and no one will ever be able to replace him as Captain Jack Sparrow Disney made the biggest mistake firing him he will always be my favorite and a legend ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum 😂😂 I always knew those 2 reminded me of someone but could never put my finger on it 😂😂
Honestly, we were so spoiled with the Pirates movies (and yes, I´m gonna count in the fourth and fifth in as well). The sets, locations, cinematography, costumes, make-up, acting, writing, gosh the writing! The character arcs!!!!!! And yes, Elisabeth was so brave and smart, but the movie always remembered that this pirate world is not something she is used to and allowed her to be scared and vulnerable. Same counts for Will. Anything I can say about Jack Sparrow (Captain!) that hasn't been said already? Its definitely his smarts that keep him alive.
He may not have been a Muskateer but he definitely made a good Elf in Lord of the Rings.
And a knight in Kingdom of Heaven.
The music!! My son was in the marching band of his high school. The school's mascot was a pirate, and the band was called the Marching Band of Pirates. One year, they played all the songs from this movie. They were incredible!
So many good movies came out in 2003 and this one was one of the best pirate movies ever ! ❤
This is still my number one favorite film out of the franchise none of the others come even close. But, I still ❤ the character Captain Jack Sparrow in all of them.
I love this franchise there's no one that can play Jack Sparrow the way Johnny Depp does.
we're gonna have a hell of a ride with this pirate's franchise, the last quote from jack that i always cried was 'not all treasure is silver and gold, mate'
Johnny is the pirate GOAT
What I find ironic about Johnny Depp being Jack Sparrow is that he was nominated as the best actor, but also got nominated as the worst actor in the same role in the last movie. Funny to think about
This performance was so radical and unique for a pirate Johnny Depp got an oscar nomination for best actor.
Elizabeth Swan. One of my favorite characters in the last 25 years. It's not easy to go toe-to-toe with Jack Sparrow, but she manages to do it.
The Pirates of the Carribean trilogy is one of my faves.
Great movie. Shame all the sequels are not that good.
😂😂😂 the *CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow* in me said "well boohoo mate" to 4:57
You two thinking its possible to walk the bottom of the bay with a boat above your head and able to breath is hilarious 😂
I love the line by Elizabeth about pain: "Try wearing a corset!" . Also Jack's line: "Bring me that horizon!"
Fun bit of historical trivia: the movie reverses the role of Port Royale and Tortuga. Tortuga was a respected port, while Port Royale was the pirate haven. In fact, Port Royale doesn't exist anymore, natural disaster put most of it under water. It was thought that it was the punishment for the wickedness. Kingston is built over the remains. I do believe the sunken ruins are a protected zone these days.
I hope to see more pirates of Caribbean movies 🎥 please men in black and continue of bad boys
definitely one of the best trilogies ever made, its a shame they never did more movies 🤔
1:04:38 I love you guys but MAN, you have got to lighten up with your censorship, you might as well pixelate every skeleton in the movie if you’re gonna do this. THERE ISN’T EVEN ANY BLOOD HERE!
Disney has had a predilection for a casting trope we see quite often, The 'round character and the thin character'. Remember the Clock and the Candlestick in Beauty and the Beast? While it originated in comedy long ago (Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy) Disney took up that mantle and rolls with it. I mention it because they 'Doubled Down' on it with this film on both King's Navy and Pirate casting. Not complaining but seeing it twice in the same film/show was a first for me.
When I watch the Curse of the Black Pearl I remember watching it when I was little back then and it's still amazing today. Best Disney Movie Series Ever 👍💯.
