- Welcome to my first-time watching as we react to Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003). What an incredible thrill ride this film was! The set pieces were incredible, the action was exhilarating and the cast was phenomenal. Director Gore Verbinski did a fantastic job with this.
In this action-packed Disney classic, we follow the story of a savvy pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and a daring blacksmith that goes by the name Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) who team up to rescue the governor's daughter Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) from cursed pirates. From epic sword fights to supernatural mysteries, we'll explore the magic that makes this film a beloved masterpiece.
Geoffrey Rush does such a great job as our main antagonist. His Captain Hector Barbossa leaves a lasting impression and is what I was hoping for when coming into this pirate tale.

Not diluting Depps' performance, but Geoffrey Rush was amazing in this film as well.. he is the personification of Barbosa.
Geoffrey Rush is fantastic. He personifies that pirate character that most people would imagine. I wholeheartedly believe he would nail a similar role in a more serious pirate film. I find he's often overlooked when people discuss great actors. He's excellent in The King's Speech.
Both Depp and Rush made the film. They breathed so much life into their characters and became instant audience favorites.
Geoffrey Rush’s performance made this film even more memorable. Giving us such ab interesting take on the traditional pirate. Love how he delivers some of the lines where it makes it clear he’s quite an intelligent man despite appearances.
having done research on the period of the Golden Age of piracy with stories about the most notorious pirates, Geoffrey Rush had it nailed!

The main theme is a slight variation on the beginning theme from Gladiator (when fighting the Germanic barbarians). One of those things you never notice unless you watch the films in close succession. Definitely better utilized here.
Norrington is the true model of gentleman, competent, polite, smart, accomplished. a little smug, but admits when he's beaten, and is not vicious or vindictive to his enemies. and when he realises Elizabeth truly does not feel the same as him, he accepts it and walks away.
I agree. He was actually a man of integrity within his own culture and world.
Orlando Bloom was so busy during the early 2000's: LOTR, Pirates of the Carribean, Troy, Kingdom of Heaven...

This film was released in 2003, and Fellowship of the Rings in 2001. Hard to believe that they made better films 20+yrs ago than they are today!
Miss this kind of tone and stories! LOTR is such an amazing trilogy. Wish we had films like these coming out.

The main difference is that so many movies were passion projects. There was more focus on telling stories then there was making money. Sure they wanted to make money but there was more of a willingness to take risks.
Elizabeth burning the rum has traumatized Jack more than anything else in his life 😂

Orlando Blooms first major role was LOTR. Then he rolled right into this franchise. Dude won the lottery.
Johnny Depp confirmed he took some Keith Richards inspiration for Jack's humor. "If I see a civilian, I'll let you know" has the same energy as "I don't have a problem with drugs, I have a problem with the police"
Keith is in one of the sequels.
Depp's performance as Jack Sparrow was a creation totally his own. He took inspiration from The Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards when he was developing the character (keep that in mind for later), as he felt that pirates were the rockstars of their time. His performance was so unusual and eccentric that it scared the bejeezus out of Disney when they first saw it. But ultimately, the performance was so well received by audiences and critics that it earned Depp an Oscar nomination and became his most iconic role. Jack Sparrow was an original character that didn't appear on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney, but he was later added to the ride and I've even heard stories of Depp himself showing up at Disney Land to play Jack Sparrow on the ride.
Hell yeah! Good for Depp for taking the risk and trying something new. It definitely paid off!

I’ve heard that it was more the flamboyance than eccentricity that had them scared, if you know what I mean, unfortunately. So glad it played out as it did and we got THIS Jack. Can’t imagine him any other way.
@@JakkFrost1 He also visited a local school in character as Jack while filming one of the sequels in England. Seems like he truly enjoyed playing Jack Sparrow. I can't blame him at all, because it seems like incredible fun to play Jack.

The opening where they give mystery to jack, and then introduce him is a master class. It's literal perfection
They didn't stop there - later we learn that he stole (borrowed without asking) that small sailboat which sinks at the Port Royal dock, giving us continued backstory to add to his character.
Jack Sparrow has the best intro to any character I have ever seen in a movie.
The writers of PIRATES 1-3 used to run a screenwriting website and forum for almost 15 years where they gave writing advice and made all their script available for people to read. The two guys are the loveliest dudes and had an amazing pedigree, even though almost nobody really hires them anymore these days.
LITTLE KNOWN TRIVIA - the first PIRATES film was actually a heavily reworked pitch for a Spielberg produced (and maybe directed) MONKEY ISLAND film that never got off the ground. Yeah, it almost happened -- Spielberg wanted to do a video game to movie adaptation and was a fan of the game, Lucasfilm was going to make it with Amblin and the two guys who wrote this movie were hired to put together a treatment. When the movie didn't happen, the writers went back and tried to pitch a movie based on the two things that MONKEY ISLAND was based on: the Disneyland ride and the Tim Powers zombie-pirates novel "On Stranger Tides" (which was very very very loosely adapted into the 4th PIRATES movie and not very well).
Terry Rossio, one of the writers, even says that Will Turner and Jack Sparrow are basically Guybrush Threepwood split down the middle; they took the character they pitched and just gave half of the qualities to one character and half to another. Barbossa is, very much, LeChuck with the named swapped out in terms of character and dialogue. In PIRATES 2 and 3, more unused MONKEY ISLAND content, scenes and even imagery from the games end up being repurposed into the trilogy (Tia Dalma is obviously the Voodoo Lady for starters).
That's interesting to know. Though I find Barbosa has much more interesting goals than LeChuck. Or perhaps more interesting and compelling desires is a better way to put it.
Sea of Thieves was inspired by PoTC, at least in theme, so that's really cool to learn considering that Sea of Thieves has a cross-over with both PoTC and Monkey Island
As much as I would love to see a Monkey Island movie, I don't think the spirit of that game would translate well into live action. At most I could see it as an animated feature where you could get away with the kind of ridiculousness that story requires.

That first scene of Jack arriving on port with a sinking ship and yet casually riding it to his desired destination is such a great analogy of who this character is 😂 calm and collected in the most unbelievable of situations, and riding any sinking situation to his desired destination .... Great film 🎥

I love how these guys respond to each other and have a great time. Always lifts my spirits if I'm down! And it's made me watch some movies again, and made me watch other movies for the first time.
The best of all the Pirates films imo, it's got just the right amount of fantasy to reality, and focuses on the piracy and seamanship more than the crazy magical stuff and what have you.

Definitely better than Cutthroat Island (1995). A movie so bad, that it bankrupt the movie studio. The same studio which gave us Terminator 2, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, The first three Rambo movies, Stargate, The Doors, Air America, and sooooo many more movies. Disney was nervous about this movie, because the failure of Cutthroat Island was still fresh in their memory. Ahh...back in the day when Disney cared about making good movies.
@@TheGoIsWin21 I come from a long line of mariners, the sea is in our blood, and seeing Master & Commander was just like seeing all the stories I'd been told growing up come to life, it was magical.
I knew I wasn't scrolling this far for nothing. Master & Commander is a must-watch. The cinema experience was out of this world!

This movie is based on the ride in Disney Land "Pirates of the Caribbean"... opened in California in 1967.
It was the very last attraction that Walt Disney himself envisioned and oversaw construction. But he died just a few months before it opened to the public.
The movie is very loosely based on the ride.... the song that Jack Sparrow sings, "A Pirates Life for Me" especially at the very end of the movie, is taken directly from the ride... it is the song that the animatronic pirates sing as the passengers float through the scenery.
It is also the first words spoken as the movie opens, when a young "Miss Turner" softly sings... "Yo ho, yo ho, a pirates life for me"...
Pirates of the Caribbean opened in Disney World in Florida in 1973. The same ride has opened at other Disney parks around the globe.
Disney released two movies that summer on 2003, both based on rides/attractions at the theme parks. "The Haunted Mansion" was a flop of a movie... but "Pirates" was a run away hit. Not bad for a theme park turned movie franchise...

YES!!!! POTC!! I would say the same as Johnny Depp/Jack Sparrow says. (Car-i-bea-n.) Pirates back then used to be superstitious, back then to have a woman on board is basically unheard of because the crew would throw woman overboard to not have bad luck. Kierra Knightley was actually 17 when casted and 18-19 when the film was done. Orlando Bloom was doing this film after LOTR- FOTR he was having very busy years. And the doing both sequels of LOTR and POTR at the same time. You can actually freeze frame on the duel between Jack and Will up on the air crossing blades you can actually see Orlandos tattoo on his left wrist written in Elvish. Mythbusters tried that stunt of having a upside ship into water for a pocket of air, and turns out to be plausible if you have bigger boat and less water. You'll find that alot of Jacks lines are improvised because Johhny felt like it was in character to say so. Disney also hated Johnny take on Captain JS being a drunk, they wanted more of honorable pirate hero but Johnny stood by guns and said no a d just wait to see how people reacted to the character, and he was right. If you think about it this curse is the worst part of immortality. What's the point of living forever if you cant enjoy life? 😮
We were thinking about this the other day! Orlando Bloom must’ve had his schedule back to back! Glad he got to be in some of the best adventure/fantasy films out there. Also the underwater boat thing is super cool. Taking advantage of physics all the way ❤️😄

@Opi-ze8tn YES but like I said rare, and the ocean is huge, the chances are other pirates probably thought it was just another tale at sea are astronomically high. Not unless those woman pirates get a reputation of being a ruthless, crazy as the most known pirates for example like Blackbeard. Not fair but that's how the world worked back then. It is what it is.

13:30- My favorite character in the movie is Norington. For his calm and collect demeanor, dry humor, competence and bravery.Thought I doubt there are many other people that share this view.
He's my favorite too! I love the scene that he respects Elizabeth's wish and lets her go with Will and he takes it so gracefully. Such a great guy.
His arc through the next few movies made me love him so much. I disliked him at first, but he grew on me

Johnny Depp is such a GREAT actor. He is so skilled. His ability to vary through characters through his years. ABSOLUTELY wonderful....yet shame the pain he goes through with drugs and other people. Dude is an absolute gem.
rumor is, Orlando Bloom, during the shooting of the underwater scene became so disoriented with lack of oxygen, he began speaking elvish from LoTR

Fun fact, when shooting the upside down underwater boat scene, Orlando Bloom was disoriented from lack of oxygen and started speaking in elvish thinking he was shooting LOTR.

This is actually bullshit.
The Mythbusters actually tried to replicate the Boat scene. It's physically impossible to hold a boat, upside down, with an air bubble like that. The buoyancy of the Boat would rip off Depp and Bloom's arms if they tried.
The only possible way to do this shot would have been to have the Boat still at the surface, have a hole in the top, that way the air would escape to allow them to carry the boat under the water.
Depp and Bloom would have a small can of air and a mask to shoot the scene of them carrying the boat under the water.
You can see evidence of this in the film itself. The little air bubbles floating out of the top of the boat
There was never a lack of oxygen for them, he was not disoriented, and he wasnt speaking elvish nor thinking he was in LOTR. Thats some weird ass headcanon.

The priates who say " 'ello puppet" and "you know nothing from hell" I met years ago! super nice dudes! I've also sailed on the Interceptor ship in the movie. In real life, it's the Lady Washington.
The French verb, parler (pronounced "par-lay") means "to speak". The question, "Parlez-vous Anglais?" means, "Do you speak English?". To "parler" with someone means to have an official conversation with someone, or in the Pirate Code, to have an official negotiation with the captain.
Incidentally, there is a social media app called "Parler", but everyone pronounces it wrong. When you consider the origin and etymology of the word, it's actually a clever name for an app designed to allow people to "speak" to the social realm.
But ignorant people pronounce it wrong.
Its crazy how the mid 2000s had some of the best stories, best acting, and best CGI. Pirates, LOTR, transformers, harry potter, star wars. So many classics

@HombreGermany by mid 2000s standards I'd call it a classic in it's own right. Everybody remembers the first Transformers. CGI in the Transformers franchise has always been good. The later ones dont hold up as well but those first couple were great, not perfect, but good movies imo.

By the way, the reason the pirates were able to recover all of the treasure is that the curse allowed them to track it, at least when it touches the ocean. As seen when Elizabeth falls into the water. Possibly the curse even encourages and assists in the recovery (see - wind changing to bring the Pearl into port rapidly). It may even have been responsible for the attack on Will's ship as a child - they felt the call of the medallion.
Pirates is one of those movie franchises that can and will never be remade….Another example is Jaws. Harry Potter, Back to the future. Lord of the rings…When you penetrate the pop culture like that it becomes very hard to even imagine someone else coming in and doing it all over again.
Nice Johnny Depp story. There was a boy who was dying. He _loved_ pirates, in particular, Jack Sparrow. Johnny Depp, as Cap'n Jack, called Kori and so made his day. His story made it around the innerwebz with the help of many TH-cam channels who started fundraisers, since the family wasn't well-off. People also sent so many gifts that Kori eventually started sending them to other kids in need (with everyone's blessing). The boy's channel is "Kraken The Box". He was always so generous with his channel updates and expressing gratitude for what he did have, and his mom was always by his side. She's a wonderful woman. You're missed Kori. (Edited to remove repeated sentence. Oops.)
As a kid Elizabeth was fascinated by pirates, that’s why she knew about parley 😊 Also all the POTC movies have end credit scenes!
I only watch when both of you haven't seen the movie. But this is one of the best movies ever.

Originally Steven Spielberg was going to direct the film, but was too busy working on MINORITY REPORT and Catch Me If You Can, both released in 2002
Hugh Jackman, Michael Keaton, Steve Martin, Harrison Ford, Jim Carrey, Matthew McConaughey, Robert DeNiro Christopher Walken, and Cary Elwes were considered for Jack Sparrow.
Amanda Bynes, Jaimie Alexander and Jessica Alba were considered for Elizabeth Swann.
Christian Bale, Tobey Maguire, Ben Peyton, and Chris Masterson were considered for Will Turner.
Tom Wilkinson RIP and Sylvester McCoy of Doctor Who fame were considered for Governor Swann.
Man this is such a fantastic entry into a franchise, we had a blast with this one!!
Also it's crazy how many big names were considered in casting - they certainly made the best choices, both with chemistry and performance! Great great movie!

That pirate pair you guys loved; Pintel & Ragetti actually had a pretty cool backstory given to them that wasn't mentioned in the movies. Ragetti's (the one with the wooden eye) mother was a prostitute and Pintel's (the bald one) sister, making him Ragetti's uncle. Before the mother died, she made her brother promise to take care of her son, which is why the two are always seen together.

33:47 this line is just brilliant. It actually makes you feel for the villain, and the delivery by Jeffrey Rush was absolutely incredible.
A lot of movies have a McGuffin. But I just noticed how this movie makes use of its McGuffin really well. They keep coming back to the medallion and the treasure chest and use it for a plot twist of Jack intentionally taking the curse on himself at a good time. And then them using it as a surprise resolve to the Jack and Barbosa sword fight. It's very creative writing.
One of my all time favorites. Watched it so many times I've notice new things many times over. Like the way Capt Jack walks on land and how he walks on ship. He walks as if it's his first time walking on land, but on ship he walks perfectly normal.
This movie gives me a lot of Princess Bride vibes. The great fight choreography, the witty banter, the great music... Great classics of swashbuckling action!
Not to mention the witty and accomplished play with the mechanics of storytelling.
Same guy did the sword choreography, the late, great Bob Anderson. He also did the sword fight choreography for the original Star Wars trilogy, the Lord of the Rings series, Highlander, Mask of Zorro, Three Musketeers and a lot of other movies. Basically, if you think of a memorable sword fighting scene in a film between 1968 and 2005 he was probably involved.
Don't forget to watch the post credit scene of each film!!!

Commodore Norrington to me has always been the most underrated and underappreciated characters in this trilogy. Especially as the movies go on. Honestly my favourite character.

When I hear the theme from Pirates of the Caribbean I can only see Maximus in the Coleseum. I find it so funny that Hans Zimmer used this exact theme once before in a big movie and thought "hmm, people have not appreciated it enough, let's try it again"
"I'm disinclined to acquiesce to your request" became part of my vocabulary for the better of the early 2000's because of this movie.
I love that Depp modeled a lot of his mannerisms as "Jack Sparrow" after Keith Richards! 😂😂😂 That genius played so well into the future films! My favorite ride at DisneyWorld was always "POTC". AWESOME REACTION GUYS! ❤❤

Man this trilogy was the last time Disney's budget made sense as these sets and visuals hold up so well compared to the last decade of Disney content.

I'm sure everyone knows, but, just in case...
On the first day of shooting, when Depp started acting...the director called "cut" and pulled Depp aside and asked him, "What the hell are you doing? You're supposed to be a pirate"
Depp said, "Give me to the end of the day. If you don't like it, I'll make a new character" (I've also seen interviews where Depp said 3 days) By the end of the day, the director told Depp, "Ok, I get it."
The movie never would have been so good if Depp had been, "Arrrr, matey...there she blows." (Traditional pirate)

my only gripe with the first one is the corset scenes… the more I get to know dress history of the time (which was 1600/1700‘s) the more I have come to realise that what she would have been wearing wasn’t even called a corset, but a stays. And it wouldn’t have been near that restrictive as they are depicting it in the movie. Its main job was to support not only the bust but also the heavy skirt layers, its not until much later in the 1800’s that tight lacing becomes a real issue with the rich ladies of the time…
In my own headcanon it is the medallion that causes her to have a difficulty of breathing, not the stays. I know it’s not a perfect headcanon but it helps me getting through those scenes 😅

Fun Fact, there's a scene after Jack admits to Elizabeth that his grand escape was drinking for 3 days and waiting for help where she ask him if there's any truth to his legend or is he a complete fraud. Jack shows her his scars and the Pirate brand and they bond over the Pirate song that she sang in the beginning of the movie. It's one of those scenes that I wish they didn't remove, cause it keeps Jack vulnerable and adds to his character even if it demystified him for a bit.
Seriously tho that's why alot of people don't understand their connection especially on potc2 . That scene was great

The theme when the Pirates first come ashore in Port Royal reminds me of one of the DUNE themes from 1984. If you look at Badelt's credits since this, one could think he composed this under Zimmer's 'direction' as a way to get his foot inside the big door. No more amazing blockbusters, but some steady work . . . .
You guys have quickly become my favorite movie reactors. You understand what goes on on screen, even the smaller nuances, and always have a good laugh.
“Stop blowing holes in my ship!” Gets me every time and I don’t know why. I just think it’s one of the more clever lines in the film.
Also, still can’t believe the Academy decided to nominate Depp for Best Actor. Ones of the more wild and out of no where noms

Not sure if you guys noticed or if its been mentioned yet. But at 10:56 after the medallion resonates in the water you can see the clouds above form a hand and start reaching out towards them as well as the wind! One of my favorite little details!
2003 Was one of the best years in cinema. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Underworld, and The Last Samurai. Absolutely incredible.
So, heres a bit of trivia I've learned through a number of ladies that work in making costumes for Ren Fairs and do research into period clothing.
A properly fitted and made Corset is actually no more restrictive than a modern day Bra.
I emphasize "properly made and fitted" here. The reason corsets have a reputation for being tight is two fold.
One is laziness on the part of production companies. For a corset to be properly fitted, it needs be custom made to fit the exact body shape of the intended wearer. Production companies are often unable or unwilling to spend the extra money to properly fit the actress into the dress, often leading to them being too small.
Second part comes from misuse in more modern times. Tightlacing was never really the intended use, and didn't really come around until closer to the World Wars.
The best part of all of this?
According to Keira Knightley herself, the corset in the film was actually _too big_ and they had to.... uh.... push them around to make it look right, and they eventually gave up and went "Good Enough." 😂
Can you believe that Keira Knightely was only 17 years old when they started filming this? Orlando Bloom was 25, so her mother had to be present during the kissing scenes.

As much as I was super stoked to see you guys watch this…the second film is the one that I am most excited to see you guys react to honestly! It’s one of those rare times that the middle film of a trilogy is my absolute favorite and I know that I am not alone in that regard for sure! I just can’t freaking wait to see her reaction in particular…especially when it comes to Jones’s character and of course his absolutely jaw dropping cgi that is still amazing to behold ffs!! So please…imma need that reaction like, IMMEDIATELY my dudes! 😅😉👍
The fencing was choreographed by industry legend Bob Anderson, who also choreographed movies like Highlander, The Princess Bride, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and the Mask of Zorro. As a choreographer myself, I've always admired his style. Especially the Princess Bride, one of the most entertaining duels in cinema, for my money :)
Funfact: When Michael Eisner the boss of Disney at the time saw Depps performance he wanted to shut that thing down. Depp basically said "fck it" played it anyways..then it was too late to stop and created and iconic role and made Eisner Millions of Dollars..that Executives for ya

Fun fact: if you rewatch the film, notice that Geoffrey Rush is pretty much always on the left side of the screen when we he shares a shot with one of the other leads. Director Gore Verbinski said that Rush specifically asked if things could be staged this way because he knew that people tend to read an image from left to right, and being on the left would be the only way he’d actually be seen when sharing the screen with Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley or Orlando Bloom!
Also, at the time POTC came out, pirate films were seen as box office poison (the last big-budget pirate movie, Cutthroat Island, had bankrupt an entire studio!), so what was Disney doing, making a pirate film based on a damn theme park ride?! Were they mad? And what was Johnny Depp, an actor mostly known for offbeat or independent movies, doing as the main star? It had disaster written all over it… but everyone was forgetting one very important thing... he’s Captain Jack Sparrow!
I’m glad J. Depp was nominated for an Oscar for this, but so disappointed that he didn’t win.
Another one of my favorite movies - such a shame we sadly will not get more of these. I would put this up with - The Mummy (1999) and the mummy returns. Just a perfect cast.

Watch the deleted scenes, search term: "jack sparrow deleted scene just good business". This dialog line is important:
"We had a deal, Jack. I contracted you to deliver cargo on my behalf, you chose to liberate it." "People aren't cargo mate". Ever since he freed the slaves of his trade ship, he has that "P" branded onto his arm.
Another line hits heavy: "Your good deed cost me, Jack." "And you have spared me any possibility of ending up as anything but what I am. And for that, I truly thank you."
There is a lot of background story of Jack in that scene, I really recommend watching it.
I love how alive the populated sets feel. It breathes life into this world. The port, the town, Tortuga--there's so many details in the set design and extras busy at work!
One of the things I very much appreciated from this film. The attention to detail in the set design is incredible. Truly magical how they bring this world to life!
The interceptor in this movie is a real ship called the lady Washington, it goes up and down the Puget Sound and as far south down the west coast is California. People can take tours of it and there’s actually a full-time crew that lives on the ship.
I remember when I saw this in theatre back then. Goosebumps at the last sword fight, I still remember vividly. I went to see this with my dad, who has now passed. Wow, memories! The first one remains my favourite, I don't quite enjoy the other ones as much.
The original trilogy of Pirates movies is flawless they are some of my favorite movies of all time. I can't wait for you guys to watch the next two films.
I detail i just noticed is that every pirate who dies after the curse is broken smiles as they die. I always knew Barbosa did but the rest, even on the ship. They can finally feel and though the feel pain and the chill of death. Its enough to die happy.
Disney executives were initially concerned that Johnny Depp's portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow would negatively impact the film. They considered cancelling the film or removing Depp from the role due to their dissatisfaction with his performance. I'm very glad they didn't.
Really hope you do all of the movies in this series. They're SOOOO much fun!!
