@@OfficialMediaKnights Like a panther. I noticed this when I first watched it. Seen this about 10 times now. It was lauded as one of the best movies that came out that year.
@@patrickwaldeck6681 I think the first one is the better movie, I feel like the story is more fleshed out in it than in the other ones, but all of them are great, that's for sure
I so appreciate how the "disapproving dad" trope is written here. Stoick never actually thinks low of Hiccup and he does want to connect with him. He thinks killing dragons is the only way, but they're more alike than they think. After Stoick said Hiccup wasn't his son, he briefly took a couple steps back because even he knows he went too far there.
I also love the touch of the empty chair standing by Hiccup's bed when he awakens at the end of the movie, implying that Stoick's been sitting there, watching over him for most of the time he was unconscious, not to mention that Stoick would've had to be the one in charge of making Berk more dragon friendly, showing how much his son's happiness means to him.
He just wanted his son to be competent. Not the weak, scared, liability he started out to be. Being able to hold your own is the difference between life and death for you and those around you. And once Hiccup figures it out by himself, Stoick is truly proud and relieved.
That moment when he said, "You're not a viking. You're not my son." Was the worst thing he could have said to Hiccup. The Norse took great pride in their ancestry. If you look at Norse, and Scandinavian surnames, you see a lot like, Anderson, Thomson and similar. They, literally, mean son of Ander or son of Thom. When Stoick said that, Hiccup could no longer claim his ancestry. He would have been the lowest status person in the village. It would, also, mean that unless he fathered another child or adopted someone, Stoick's bloodline would end with him. And after Hiccup died, he would not be welcome at the table of his ancestors in Valhalla...assuming he was let in. So, yeah. What Stoick said was the worst curse he could say. And the only saving grace was that Hiccup was the only one who heard him say it, so he could take it back. Side note: The first flights with Toothless., including where he terrorizes Astrid would have been really profound for them. Considering back then that the highest most anyone got was when they climbed a tall tree, and flying was something no one would really think of, to find yourself flying so high that you are above the clouds and looking down on mountains would have been a view reserved for the Gods. We can imagine how amazing and fun that flight would be. They, literally, couldn't.
The musical score, "Forbidden Friendship", never fails to make me bawl my eyes out. The build up when Hiccup and Toothless bond to the end with the soft chorus is so emotionally charged. And not just only the score, but the entire scene has no dialogue whatsoever, only actions and reactions. Hiccup touching Toothless's nose will forever be iconic. Glad you two enjoyed the film. Can't wait for y'all to see the sequels. :)
It’s actually impossible for me to watch any of the three movies without crying tears of joy or sadness. And I can’t get over how phenomenal the score for this movie is, John Powell is SUCH an underrated composer. The tracks from when Hiccup takes his first flight make you feel like you’re flying as well
I love the music too. My favorite is where they haul Astrid up into the clouds. Favorite scene though is when Stoic looks up to see Hicup leading the teen Dragonriders into battle with The Behemoth. "Ever the stubborn, pig-headed viking you ever were," from his friend and Stoic just nods his head in agreement.
I like how after seeing the giant dragon and realizing he severely underestimated it, instead of arguing or denying it, Stoick admits he made a mistake and tried to buy his men to escape. A true leader.
I think considering the boats were gone and that dragon could've roasted him and Gobber in less than a minute, he wasn't really buying them anything. Honestly, I wasn't really a fan of Stoick in this movie. I don't hate him, I just found it hard to let him off the hook that easily.
@seangriffin2053 It's a big island. He was at least trying to buy them time to get out of sight. He's also a single father and the chief who has to take care of an entire village while also worrying about frequent dragon attacks. You can't really blame him for being upset with Hiccup when all he's known is that dragons are dangerous and are constantly attacking his people and putting his family in danger and now his son is suddenly trying to protect the creatures that have caused him so much pain and suffering. We learn even more about that last point in the 2nd movie as well. He's always trying to keep his family and his people safe.
@@BeDatAPickle Well unless they are marathon swimmers, they can't get away. He is obviously a good chief, but he's failed as a father. Am I supposed to ignore the fact him slamming that hammer down when his son is in the ring with that dragon nearly kills him? Stoick obviously knows how they react to that. Glossing over that really bothered me. The fact that Hiccup is so different really keeps him at a distance from his son and it shows through most of the movie. I know that happens in these parent-child relationships. My issue with Stoick is he doesn't really try until it's almost too late. And I also know the 2nd movie gives more context (we're not meant to know that yet), but it's not like Stoick ever explains himself. When it comes to Hiccup, he really doesn't believe he has to.
@@seangriffin2053 No, that shouldn't be glossed over. Stoick made some terrible mistakes, and they were tied to his character flaws. He hated dragons, and only ever saw them as a threat. He loved his son but couldn't relate to him. And at that moment, I think, that his response wasn't just about Hiccup trying to tame the dragon, but HOW he did it. Hiccup threw down the helmet that was made from his Mother's armor. His Father kept that armor, and had it fashioned into TWO helmets. Seeing as he presented it to Hiccup immediately after getting back from the filed hunt, means that he had that made long ago in hopes of being able to give it to Hiccup. He wanted his son to have something of his Mother's. And when Hiccup threw it aside and said, "I'm not one of them", he was, turning his back on his people, and disrespecting that gift Stoick gave him. THAT is why I think he was so mad. How Hiccup tried to show them was done in a way that was an insult to everyone, especially his Mother and Father. Stoick is a flawed person, and didn't know how to be a Father to someone who was as different, AND be the Chief. But he was, at least, able to admit he was wrong...when he sat still long enough, shut his mouth and actually was forced to listen.
This movie was my late gfs favorite movie. She never got to see the other ones, but she thought this movie was so great and sweet. I saw every movie and the shows in her name and they only seemed to get better. I loved them so much. I'm glad you two are getting the chance to experience this together.
This movie has my all-time favorite musical score from John Powell. It's so melodically simple yet orchestrally complex. And as put by the YT channel *Sideways,* 99% of all the movie's themes and melodies are in the opening except for the theme for Toothless (because he represents the unknown). So, basically, John Powell is telling a Hero's Journey story just through the music! And the track that plays during Hiccup's first flight with Toothless (called "Test Drive") is actually both Toothless and Hiccup's theme played together, emphasizing that they have to work together for this to work. And it's because of this that I was not only mad that Powell didn't win the Oscar for Best Original Score (he was nominated, but still), but I was even more livid when I read that _The Social Network_ won Best Original Score. It's like, did _Social Network_ even *_HAVE_* a musical score?!?!
@@OfficialMediaKnights I absolutely recommend checking out Sideways' video about the score. It's fairly short and does a great job of highlighting what a phenomenal feat of world building and storytelling this movie was. th-cam.com/video/4UUJQH7GLms/w-d-xo.htmlsi=O7vbbKcpvEfibzj3
It's that trusting, passive first snoot boop that gets me, *every time*. Toothless is reasonably wary, so Hiccup just looks away and puts his hand out. I literally weep, ever time.
Ooh! This movie and its sequel both have a special place in my heart. This was an excellent reminder to watch third one because I haven't watched it yet, but I will soon! So glad you're watching these movies!
@@bethcushway458 Oh, I'm so very excited! I was going to wait until this weekend, but I'll probably watch it after work tonight. Thank you for letting me know. 😊
We are having so much fun with this one, and honestly can't wait to watch the rest, it was just such a wholesome fun time! Thank you so much for the support ❤️
@@OfficialMediaKnightsaside from the Main 3 films, there's a lot that can be watched from this franchise, thats up to you guys if you have the time 😅♥️👍
I met a wingsuiter/basejumper/loony once, and one of the things I asked him was how on Earth do you get into this sort of thing? He looked at me, shrugged and just said "I always wanted to fly."
@@matiasmarcelotoledop Interesting, I felt this to a degree in the second movie, and quite strongly in the third movie but never in the first movie. I felt like The Hidden World tried to cutify him to the point that it was a little off putting to me. I mean, he’s meant to be “the unholy offspring of lightning and death itself”. They did a great job of this in the first movie, and he felt powerful to a degree that was fitting of his title . They (in my opinion) contrasted this well with the cuter scenes without one undermining the other. The second movie did a decent job too, not quite as good as the first, but the third movie makes him feel like a weak little puppy in my eyes. Needless to say, I enjoyed all the movies. I just had some relatively minor gripes with the second one and some noticeably larger problems with the third. Nonetheless I still think this is one of the best animated franchises out there.
I don't think it's a coincidence that both How to Train Your Dragon and Lilo & Stitch share the same directors and co-writers, Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois
"Worst father of the year award" is so funny, because Stoic is considered one of the best animated fathers lol I wish y'all acknowledged the moment right after he told Hiccup he isn't his son, because the animators portrayed the clear, genuine guilt and regret on his face for saying what he did immediately after, and it's so beautiful in a heartbreaking way! He loves Hiccup, no denying that, and I'm glad he owned up to his misjudgments and behavior.
Thankyou for pointing that out. I've seen a lot of reactors miss that detail and just settle with the conclusion that he's inherently a bad father. But in reality he's simply a man stuck in the old ways. He likely grew up with his father pushing him towards fighting dragons and that is the norm for him. That is what Vikings do. That's how you earn respect from the community. And like many parents when hiccup was born Stoic must've imagined his whole life, growing up and becoming a mighty dragon slayer like himself. He's not a good or bad father. He's a very layered and complex character that has flaws but also has a very satisfying arc. I love it when animation movies don't just half ass side(?) characters and instead give them nuance. This trilogy is an actual work of art. So much effort and care was put into it and it shows.
A nice detail I've always loved is that when hiccup drops his mace against the natter in training, it immediately stops trying to kill him and is curious, showing that they aren't inherently violent
Stoick isn't disappointed in Hiccup at the start because of Hiccup's small size or lack of muscles, nor is it true that he can't stand who Hiccup is as a person. A lot of people seem to think that Gobber is better at understanding Hiccup than his father, but in actuality Gobber is part of the reason Hiccup and Stoick don't see things eye to eye. Gobber means well, and he does have some good ideas about what Hiccup needs, but he's a terrible mediator between father and son. The reason for Stoick's disappointment at the beginning is heavily implied when he admonishes Hiccup after the opening dragon raid. Hiccup has established a pattern by this point of going out and trying to fight dragons with his inventions, making a mess of things and putting himself, and other people in danger. Hiccup's opening narration also implies that he only wants to kill dragons in the first place to get a girlfriend and be seen as one of the cool kids, rather than for the good of the village. We're also shown that Hiccup has a tendency to beat around the bush a lot, omit information and straight up lie, or at the very least 'bend the truth' at times in order to not get into trouble. There's little reason for Stoick to believe his son is telling the truth once he thinks he's allied himself with the enemy they've been at war with for 300 years. I love how Stoick's change of heart at the end is purely the result of his love for his son winning out over 7 generations worth of ingrained hatred and intolerance towards dragons, and that he tells Hiccup he's proud of him *before* he flies off to face the Red Death. He's telling Hiccup he's proud of him for who he is as a person, rather than his accomplishments.
It should also be noted that, even Hiccup meets Stoic/the ways of his people halfway, something that allows him to finally find his place in the community: while he didn't kill a defenseless dragon, to the point he says "I can't kill one", in that final showdown Hiccup kills an entity that clearly is not backing down and, in this particular case, is going for the kill. Hiccup and his community find he is not useless or a coward, he just needed to have a clearer reason to take a life (he doesn't kill just for the sake of killing). Also I wouldn't be too hard with Gobber being a terrible mediator: while Gobber accomodates more Hiccup's eccentricities, he is not entirely in the channel of trying "new ways" for the dragon problem (thus he also tries to make Hiccup settle for "what's always been done") and, while he tries to soften Stoic in some of his views, he can't push the boundary too much; Stoic may be his friend, but he is also his leader... Vikings didn't take open challenges to authority very well. It's not a perfect intervention, but nobody else is doing something (all the other members of the town disrespect Hiccup or simply love how Stoic loses his cool with him) and the two involved parts are locked in a downward spiral because they don't listen to each other (Stoic tries to be more strict; as a response, Hiccup makes crazier stunts that require lying before backfiring spectacularly, prompting Stoic to be more severe... and so on). Gobber was never going to make much of a difference, but he still tried to do something.
@@DocuzanQuitomos To be fair, I don't think anyone saw Hiccup as a coward. He would run out and try to help during the dragon raids after all, even though he was wholly unequipped and unprepared to do so. They saw him as reckless, clumsy and imprudent, as well as generally being incompetent and not fitting in, but none of them accused him of being cowardly. Like I said, I think Gobber means well, and his heart is certainly in the right place. He has a good idea about what's going with both Hiccup and Stoick since they both have an easier time talking to him than they do each other, but he does inadvertently add to the rift between father and son by saying things like "It's not so much what you look like, it's what's inside that he can't stand," when we learn pretty much immediately afterwards that Stoick loves his son very much, but has no idea how to deal with him being so different from all the other vikings. At the start of the movie Hiccup and Stoick are both approaching their frayed relationship with a preconceived idea of each other: Hiccup thinks his dad is disappointed in him because he isn't big, strong or tough like the others, and Stoick thinks Hiccup is being irreverent and irresponsible, treating the raids as an opportunity to get a girlfriend and joking about the village potentially having to starve during the winter months. We learn that neither of these are true, but Gobber telling Hiccup that his dad doesn't like him because of who he is as a person, rather than because of what he looks like, just adds fuel to the fire and makes Hiccup feel like more of a failure. Gobber isn't in the wrong for wanting to do something, and he clearly realizes the position he's in, and that Stoick and Hiccup both listen to him more than they listen to each other. He's obviously trying to help as best he can, but he is still adding to the pressure Hiccup feels when it comes to proving himself and making his father proud. Gobber could have chosen to set them both straight, telling Hiccup that his father's worried about him, and telling Stoick that Hiccup just wants to be accepted and make him proud, but instead he unwittingly keeps them from seeing things eye to eye.
The moment when Hiccup and Toothless have to rely on each other during their first flight and just go on instinct is hands down one of my favorite moments in this entire series. I think it is the first time their bond is cemented in the films and it is so much fun to watch. The score goes so hard in that moment and it gives me a ridiculous amount of chills every time I see it.
Roger Deakins worked in this movie as a visual consultant so you know you are in for a treat. That 180 flip in the sky where toothless learns to fly again in the sky with Hiccup from POV of Toothless was sooo beautiful. ♥️
14:52 Well fun fact, the "cinematographer" for the HTTYD trilogy is actually Roger Deakins (known for films like 1917, Blade Runner 2049 and so on). The production team originally thought that they will be spending time with him consulting about the lighting and stuff for a day or two, but unexpectedly Roger himself insisted that he stayed for the entire production. He was credited as "Visual Consultant" throughout the series.
When Hiccup gets touched by Toothless the first time, you notice this tiny start-and-stop hesitancy from Toothless before he makes contact. That was an error that wound up making the scene more incredible than it already was. From Google: In "How to Train Your Dragon," the moment where Hiccup first touches Toothless's snout, and Toothless seems to slightly hesitate before fully making contact, is often considered an animation error that the creators decided to keep in the film because it added to the emotional impact of the scene, making the moment of trust between them feel even more powerful; essentially, it was a happy accident that enhanced the story.
Ironically, the How To Train Your Dragon trilogy is some of the best story telling out there. So glad you watched this one. Can't wait for the others! Just...bring tissues.
This movie surprised the heck out of me, I had no expectations and by the end I was cheering. I am looking forward to the live action version. This trilogy is incredible
The opening to one of the greatest animated franchises, I'm glad you guys have reacted to it. The world building, story and characters from the first movie alone all so great. Even the music and visuals are beautiful.
You have no idea how bad I wanted you guys to react to these masterpieces. This is not only the best animated trilogy, but the best trilogy ever in my opinion. Every movie is amazingggg
There has never been a more perfect animated trilogy. They’re such a good trilogy that I was upset when the last one ended. Every single one of the 3 films get better and better as they go. I was surprised to see this pop up in my notifications! I loved watching your reactions to it and it seems like you enjoyed it as much as the rest of us! Thanks guys!
If you look at the scene where Hiccup is falling and Toothless is desperately trying to get to him, Hiccup is falling head first. The first part of him that Toothless would have been able to reach would have been his feet. It's never explicitly stated, but it's very likely that Toothless bit off Hiccup's foot trying to catch him and save him. So, the parallels are even stronger than you realized. They didn't just both lose their left fin/leg, each of them lost the body part to the other.
25:40 this scene was absolute magic bro really put a 5 speed stick shift on a dragon now ima need yall to react to the 2 other films so i can cry all over again thank you ily buh bye
I randomly asked for this movie for Christmas one year and it turned into the best thing my family and I had watched for a long time. Even my dad liked it and he hates animation. The music alone firmly cements it in my top 5 movies of all time. I cry every time
If you liked this movie, there is a series about this saga that tells you what happened after the first movie and before the second, it starts with "Dragons of Berk" and ends with "Race to the Edge" which is on Netflix. I am a follower from Argentina and I am using the translator to talk to you, sorry if it is misspelled.
I love how much you guys ACTUALLY LOVE most, if not all, aspects of a movie. From the acting (or voice acting in this case), to the score, the writing, the photography, the beauty of certain scenes or even individual shots. As a cameraman and video editor it makes me enjoy your reactions all the more. I'm certain you'll react to the rest of this saga, which surprisingly gets better and better with each movie, and I cannot wait. 💖
I absolutely loved these movies as a kid it’s insane how much I wanted a dragon after watching them, so glad y’all are watching these gems the sequel is even better. The relationship between hiccup and toothless is so wholesome. 🖤
This franchise dominated my family for so many years! We even took the kiddos to see a live action version with actors and large mechanical dragons breathing real fire. It was magical!
The score to this movie is just A+! The song played when they're learning how to fly is literally called Test Drive lol! Love these movies! Can't wait to see your reaction to the sequels!
These movies are so good that even the 2 sequels make it better and better. There is also a Toothless/Kitt Harington clip where John Snow does some of his lines with Toothless.
I firmly believe this movie wouldn't have 50% of its magic if it wasn't for the music. You can always catch me randomly humming it. John Powell is a musical godsend.
Same. I just found myself so swept up by the beautiful music that I’m currently learning many of the songs on piano as a love letter to what may be my new favourite movie soundtrack of all time.
You didn't show it in the cut version, but when stoic say hiccup isn't his son, when he walks outside, he takes a big step back, with a big sigh, realizing what he has done, disowning his only son
I love the casting of Gerard Butler! Who do we get to play the aggressive, rambunctious, proud viking clan leader? Nothing short of Leonidas himself will do! 😂
You guys are seriously doing like all of my favorite series at the same time. Love it! This is my favorite animated film of all time. Keep up the good work!
Fun fact, at 8:30 when the camera pans to toothless’ face his eyes were not supposed to be open but an animation error occured where his eyes were open and staring at hiccup and the animators prefered it that way and kept it!
Hey there ! I'm usually a silent watcher but when I saw it was this movie it made me want to write a little support word for this channel that I follow for a few years now... So yeah... thank you guys ^^ and hi from France ! your channel is one of those that helped me to be confortable with english so far
I love you guys for doing this! Still one of my most favorite animations ever. I love the HUGE difference (for better) in quality from the first to the second movie. If you've never seen it (which I hope) you're gonna be shook!! Also I absolutely adore it for being one of the few rare-ass examples of every entry in this franchise holding up, IF NOT even better than the one before!
Just want to let you guys know that you became one of my favorite reactors on TH-cam. I just love your insights and how open-minded you guys are. I love your reactions, especially when it comes to horror films. If you haven't seen Scream, Friday the 13th, Saw, Halloween, Trick 'r Treat, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Carrie, Dead Silence, and many more classic horror films, it's the best movies to watch during Spooktober!
@OfficialMediaKnights Just found you. Also you see a lot of the best footage. Which brings you into the Movie. Subscribed. Thank you. Melbourne Australia
At 2:04, you mention Stoick's beard, right? Apparently, that was the most difficult thing to animate at that time because all the hair in this movie was INDIVIDUALLY ANIMATED. So imagine having to make such a manly beard while your outdated composite monitors beg you to put them out of their misery as their processors are fried to death (That was a mouthful to write but my point still stands).
I am so looking forward to watching this tonight. My favorite computer animation trilogy! Had not realized you two had not watched this yet. All three movies are a must!
One thing I'll never get is some people blame Stoick for stopping the Arena fight. It makes sense he would, we've seen Dragon's from Hiccup's point of view but he hasn't, plus he threw his weapon and protection away when he was meant to fight one
you have a good memory and eye for detail, the Arrax vs Vhagar scene was in fact partially based on/inspired by Toothless's fight against the Red Death, as the big one's called. This franchise is one of my all-time top favourites, so I'm thrilled your taking an interest in it now, and if, at the end of these movies, your interested in seeing more, there are a plethora of shorts, specials, and several series that are all worthy/quality additions to this franchise, plus, they also show many Dragon species you never see in the movies, so they are worth watching just for that if nothing else (but there are plenty of other good things in them, as well). Plus, at the end of this, I would be interested to hear your final verdict on which kind of Dragon/s you would most want to train/fly p.s. contrary to what I imagine many people's favourite Dragon is (Toothless/Night Furies), my favourite species is the fast, colourful, spine-shooting, bipedal, bird/Dinosaur-like Deadly Nadder, whose magnesium based flames are canonically the hottest of any Dragon-fire
@@bensalisbury6535 yeah, but it never really sat well with me that they were taken out of Sharp Class and put into Tracker Class prior to the 2nd film, especially since Nadders were literally the symbol of Sharp Class and possess all the primary characteristics, but I assume the sense of smell trait was added in as an explanation for Stormfly being able to track down Toothless across miles of unfamiliar territory in the 2nd movie, but I still see them as belonging in both classes, like how Hobgobblers are both Stoker and Mystery Class
The score, the music, in this will be always a treasure to me. One of the best written scores in terms of themes and creating scenarios. Thanks to John Powell for composing this gem!!! 🤩🤩
One of my favorite animated franchises. So wholesome with story and characters and so majestic with the beautiful soundtrack, animation and the design/personalities given to the creatures. So excited for you guys to experience this
Omg we had SO MUCH FUN with this, and like you said the score is absolutely stunning, the characters so likeable.. We're so excited to continue this journey!
No way you didn't watch it before - it was such a hit and toys/merch were everywhere. Great reaction, cant wait you to see 2nd and 3rd parts. They are also amazing
I’m a Pixar fan, through good and bad times. But I truly believe that the HTTYD films are the only animated series that only Dreamworks could pull off. It’s such a perfect marriage of script, visuals, and performances that it had to be these particular creatives working on these films for them to be as special as they are.
@@BJBee You couldn’t have misinterpreted my comment more. I’m saying I prefer Pixar, but I think this is a story that Dreamworks told uniquely well and Pixar couldn’t improve upon. Stop trying to make my comment into something that it isn’t.
This is one of those Movie Trilogys where everything is perfect, Animation, Sound, Music, Actors, Story... When they announced a Live Action Remake I was sceptical at first but its the same Writers (mostly) and the same Director, so I think we should be fine (remind me when it came out if I was wrong please) Cant wait to see your Reaction to the next two Movies and mayhaps even the Two Shows that exist (Riders of Berk wich comes first and Race to the Edge both between the first two Movies)
I LOVE your reactions, beautiful analyses and your attention to detail. ❤❤❤❤ I sometimes get nervous before watching a reaction to one of my favorite movies because I don't want to hear people hate on a character I like or hear them being inattentive/ impatient and jumping to wrong conclusions. I'm gonna be honest and say it might be one of my biggest pet peeves when people (and reactors almost exclusively) just Don't. Pay. Attention and are seemingly being deliberately obtuse. THANK THE GODS FOR THIS CHANNEL. Watching you guys is always a pleasant experience for me. I don't remember ever getting nervous when I click on one of your videos. You guys are kinda my comfort channel, I watch when I wanna have fun (also for the sake of my sanity lol).
The quality of the cast in the "How to Train Your Dragon" series is impressive. Gerard Butler as Hiccup's father "Stoick". A diverse actor: "Phantom of the Opera", "300", "Olympus has Fallen" series, "The Bounty Hunter". And in "How to Train Your Dragon 2" they add Cate Blanchett "Lord of the Rings", etc. A great cast!
So glad you are starting to watch this trilogy. And something that I am sure you picked up on your full reaction is when Stoick leaves Hiccup at the great hall after saying "You're not my son", he staggers just after just realizing what he said. It's such a little detail, but so important as to show that he didn't mean what he just said.
Some of my all time favorite soundtracks are in this movie. It's got a special place in my heart. So thrilled you guys took the time to enjoy it as well!!! Can't wait to see you guys enjoy the rest of the trilogy.
So happy you guys are finally watching this series! ❤ Probably one of the best animated series of all time (IMO). I recommended this to you guys a few months ago and so happy to finally be watching this with you guys! 💞
You didn’t show it in your reaction but my favorite bit of animation in this movie is actual right after Stoick tells Hiccup that he’s not his son. He walks out the door and then you can see him stagger back a little under the weight of what he just did before he presses forward. Ugh, it’s so good man. Adds so much to Stoick’s character with zero dialogue.
Welcome to one of the BEST movie trilogies of all time (in my opinion). I would rate this one with Back to the Future and Lord of the Ring are some of the most perfect film trilogies I've ever seen.
I wonder how many people recognized the voice actors,.. look them up you might be surprised. Also the TV series is just as good as the movies. They develop alot of lore and relationships, not just between humans but also between dragons. By far the most important thing is that the TV series has a definitive conclusion, no cliffhanger, no questions about the future, just a solid conclusive ending to a great epic.
This movie is a masterpiece of subtle animations and nuanced characters. The whole series is, and the character development from film to film is consistent and completely logical to each character. People tend to give Stoic too much flak in this one, though, I think. His character ark is excellent and makes perfect sense for him, who he is, how he was raised and what he has experienced in his life. Killing dragons to protect his people is all he has known, and all any of them have ever known. He desperately wants to be a good father to Hiccup, but doesn’t know how to deal with the different mindset, and neither of them is particularly good at communicating with the other (thank goodness for Gobber is all I can say). Sadly you skipped one of my absolute favorite moments in the film, when Stoic leaves the hall after ripping into Hiccup following the dragon killing ceremony fiasco. You can clearly see how much that hurt him. He feels betrayed by his own son and genuinely thinks that what hiccup has done is dangerous to everybody in the clan. He loves his son in his own way, but in his fear and anger he lashed out and said too much. That animation of him realizing what he’s done, then bracing himself to keep moving forward to protect his people in the only way he knows how is a fantastic bit of animation. What a masterpiece, and I really look forward to you two seeing the rest of the series, which is not only one of the best animated trilogies ever, it’s literally one of the best film trilogies ever produced.
Great reaction ! This is one of my absolute favorite movies of all times, and I'm so excited for you to discover it. If you plan on diving deeper into this franchise, there are 3 TV shows that you can check out that all take place before the second movie, and show all the adventures that Hiccup, Toothless and their friends get into. -Riders of Berk -Defenders of Berk -Race to the Edge What I love so much about these shows is that they expend the world so much: you get to see so many new kinds of dragons and you get to know all the characters a lot better.
I don't have much to say besides that the entire trilogy is worth it and it's a fun ride. I am typing this before I start, but I expect multiple comments about the music, especially where Hiccup and Toothless are training together and he loses the cheat sheet. I always get goosebumps there, every single time. One of my top animated film scores easily. He said the thing! 25:10 💯
Hiccup's pretty cool, especially cuz I think he's one of the first/very few protagonists in a major animated movie who has a prosthetic limb, and not a fancy sci-fi one either.
38:20 omg, i just realized. its a parallel to the same question earlier that wasnt explicitly answered. "dragons always go for the kill" and "why didnt you?" Hiccup tells us in that moment. that was perfectly told!
People always bag on Stoic in this movie, and ofc he went too far but Stoic was mad because Hiccup straight up threw his mother’s armor to the floor and said ‘I’m not one of them’. So when he says ‘you’re not a Viking, you’re not my son’ he’s not disowning Hiccup because he doesn’t want to kill dragons, he’s reciprocating Hiccup’s disownment if his mother and their collective people.
One thing I noticed and really appreciate is whenever someone watches this and Gobber said that dons always goes for the kill everyone immediate response is “no not always” but Hiccup immediately said “ *why* didn’t you” which just goes to show his curiosity with dragons and the world in general

Got a a perfect movie for y’all to watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 🐢 2014
Im so happy to see you guys watching this franchise! Fun fact! Toothless's personality is based off of one of the producers cats!! ❤
Can you believe this lost the Academy Award to one of the Toy Storys👹
time for the second one!
You guys please check out “The Croods 1-2 ) it’s an absolutely phenomenal series
In case you're interested, the animators used a cat's mannerisms to animate Toothless. You're basically at a giant, hairless cat 😂
That tracks! He’s so adorable! 😍
@@OfficialMediaKnights Like a panther. I noticed this when I first watched it. Seen this about 10 times now. It was lauded as one of the best movies that came out that year.
That explains everything 😂❤
also pretty sure Stitch was a modell for Toothless
He's like a mixture of a axolotl and a bat, with the behaviour of a cat 😂❤
Probably the only DreamWorks movie trilogy to make me cry more and more with each movie.
Ohhhh we are PUMPED and ready for the tears haha can't wait to continue this series!
@@OfficialMediaKnights No youre not i promise😭
@@OfficialMediaKnights yeah yall gotta watch all 3 now! really one of the best trilogies out there
It is absolutely remarkable how even though the first movie is really fantastic each one after it kept raising the bar.
Yeah the level of detail like "what did I just said to my son?... " damn it's like he just realized what he just said to hiccup.
@@tehdipstickI’m crying. Didn’t notice that. Damn
The animators actually sat through aerodynamics classes to make the dragons' flying as realistic as possible. Their dedication is commendable.
I really appreciate that. behind the scenes the technological people really bring everything together
Except maybe the alpha's flight, that one seems a bit far fetched
The tracks from when Hiccup takes his first flight make you feel like you’re flying as well
That is my favorite piece in the entire score!!
Just so you know, if I'm not mistaken, "Thank you for nothing, you useless reptile" was an ad-lib by Hiccup's VA
If it's true it's amazing 😂
I love the funny delivery of this quote
Hiccup's VA (Jay Baruchel) plays the nerdy guy in Tropic Thunder, Kevin Sandusky
@@Jooca03 "Tell him what time time it is, McCluskey! Tell him!!!"
Which is one of my favorite movie quotes of all time 😂❤
jay baruchel!
I like how after seeing the giant dragon and realizing he severely underestimated it, instead of arguing or denying it, Stoick admits he made a mistake and tried to buy his men to escape. A true leader.
and a real hero. not just an A-hole mad his son didnt follow his footsteps. he has layers. love this for an animated movie.
My condolences❤❤
HAHAHHAHAHA
You two are in for an emotional journey with this trilogy
Can’t wait to share it with all of you! ❤️
The music in this film was incredible. We’ve been listening to it since we watched it. So beautifully majestic!
Oh my god you'll love it! There's a short film called "How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming" that comes after the last one which is excellent as well❤
@@bethcushway458 Oh, I'm so very excited! I was going to wait until this weekend, but I'll probably watch it after work tonight. Thank you for letting me know. 😊

@@OfficialMediaKnightsaside from the Main 3 films, there's a lot that can be watched from this franchise, thats up to you guys if you have the time 😅♥️👍
The Hidden World is also great.
I don't think any movie, live or animated, captures the joy and beauty of what flying would be like better than this one
Couldn’t agree more.
I met a wingsuiter/basejumper/loony once, and one of the things I asked him was how on Earth do you get into this sort of thing? He looked at me, shrugged and just said "I always wanted to fly."
Ah yes! Toothless. The way they manage to make him both adorable and intimidating will never not impress me. It's like Stitch.
broken.... but still good.....
My problem with him it's that it's too cute for my liking, i don't mind the cutenes but i feel its too much at times
"Worst father of the year award" is so funny, because Stoic is considered one of the best animated fathers lol
I wish y'all acknowledged the moment right after he told Hiccup he isn't his son, because the animators portrayed the clear, genuine guilt and regret on his face for saying what he did immediately after, and it's so beautiful in a heartbreaking way!
100%
Great comment!
The next two movies are one hell of a rollercoaster.
Ooooh! We can’t wait!
14:52
Well fun fact, the "cinematographer" for the HTTYD trilogy is actually Roger Deakins (known for films like 1917, Blade Runner 2049 and so on).
The production team originally thought that they will be spending time with him consulting about the lighting and stuff for a day or two, but unexpectedly Roger himself insisted that he stayed for the entire production.
He was credited as "Visual Consultant" throughout the series.
Stoick's stumble after disowning Hiccup is honestly S tier animation
Toothless doing his divebomb and giving that sound is so satisfying to hear

I mean, the 3rd film kinda ruins what was established in this and the 2nd movies.

As a cameraman and video editor it makes me enjoy your reactions all the more. I'm certain you'll react to the rest of this saga, which surprisingly gets better and better with each movie, and I cannot wait. 💖
When Stoick said Hiccup wasn’t his son I swear that if it wasn’t for him almost fainting the moment the door closes he would have been irredeemable

OMG YESSSS. THANK YOU FOR STARTING THIS SERIES.
My favorite line in the movie ("Thanks for nothing, you useless reptile") was an adlib and not in the script.

Plus, at the end of this, I would be interested to hear your final verdict on which kind of Dragon/s you would most want to train/fly
p.s. contrary to what I imagine many people's favourite Dragon is (Toothless/Night Furies), my favourite species is the fast, colourful, spine-shooting, bipedal, bird/Dinosaur-like Deadly Nadder, whose magnesium based flames are canonically the hottest of any Dragon-fire
Yes, and as you probably know they have great sense of smell and are tracking dragons.
Birds = Dinosaurs
All birds are dinosaurs but not all dinosaurs are birds
The main score is MAJESTIC as all bee's knees. Can't wait for you guys to finish out the triloy. One of the best out there.
I’m a Pixar fan, through good and bad times. But I truly believe that the HTTYD films are the only animated series that only Dreamworks could pull off. It’s such a perfect marriage of script, visuals, and performances that it had to be these particular creatives working on these films for them to be as special as they are.
You know you don't have to choose? You can like both companies and their movies. It's not your fight.
This movie's score is on track to become my no. 1 topic on spotify this year. The many piano covers out there make for great study music. :)
I LOVE your reactions, beautiful analyses and your attention to detail. ❤❤❤❤
I sometimes get nervous before watching a reaction to one of my favorite movies because I don't want to hear people hate on a character I like or hear them being inattentive/ impatient and jumping to wrong conclusions.
One of my all time favorite animated movies and dreamworks movies, so excited to see your reaction to this one and the next two!!❤😊
Hope you enjoy! Excited to check out the rest 😃❤️
A great cast!
this movie is hands down in my top 3 favorite movie franchise, along side Eragon as another dragon themed movie
All the movies in this Triology are truly amazing and each one is better than the last would love to see more reactions to these movies.
I was in my early thirties when I watched this, and yet, I got teary-eyed toward the end. Beautiful film.
Everyone: boop the snoot.
Denise: *OMG BOOP THE SNOOT!*
One of the best couples in movies incoming
That romantic flight man, really beautiful score
Welcome to one of the BEST movie trilogies of all time (in my opinion). I would rate this one with Back to the Future and Lord of the Ring are some of the most perfect film trilogies I've ever seen.
One of the rare times when an animation has a trilogy where all the movies are amazing
I grew up with these movies. In my eyes they’re pretty much perfect. Best animated trilogy in my opinion
the way is SCREAMED when i realised this was you guys, aka my fav reactors, reacting to one of my fav movies!!!!
It’s amazing what animated movies can achieve when everyone involved is wildly competent 😉
One of the best aniomated trilogy ever
Great reaction ! This is one of my absolute favorite movies of all times, and I'm so excited for you to discover it.
If you plan on diving deeper into this franchise, there are 3 TV shows that you can check out that all take place before the second movie, and show all the adventures that Hiccup, Toothless and their friends get into.
-Riders of Berk
-Defenders of Berk
-Race to the Edge
What I love so much about these shows is that they expend the world so much: you get to see so many new kinds of dragons and you get to know all the characters a lot better.
the first bonding scene and the test drive scene are just so special to me
Hiccup's pretty cool, especially cuz I think he's one of the first/very few protagonists in a major animated movie who has a prosthetic limb, and not a fancy sci-fi one either.
38:20 omg, i just realized. its a parallel to the same question earlier that wasnt explicitly answered. "dragons always go for the kill" and "why didnt you?" Hiccup tells us in that moment. that was perfectly told!
Absolute banger! This movie made me a dragon lover.
SCREAMINGGGGG OMG SO EXCITED TO SEE YOU ON THIS JOURNEY
24:48 the track playing is called test drive 😎
This movie in 3D is one of the best theater experiences you will ever have.
Yes, I wish they would re-release them in 3D again.
One thing I noticed and really appreciate is whenever someone watches this and Gobber said that dons always goes for the kill everyone immediate response is “no not always” but Hiccup immediately said “ *why* didn’t you” which just goes to show his curiosity with dragons and the world in general
